Liveblog: Canadiens drop fifth in a row

DesharnaisCelebrates

The Canadiens ran into a red-hot goaltender who used to play for them and lost 2-1 to Mathieu Garon and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The team went 0-for-Florida, despite a TB lineup decimated by injuries and flu.

Last place.

The beat goes on.

    Laffs scored. 2-1 Florida.

  3. Mavid says:

Well Bill it depends on what you mean by better…to look at hands down its Cammalleri playing hockey..i would give the edge to Bourque..

  4. aj says:

I knew it! Why didn’t they put Geoffrion after the trade with Gill last week? The guy can play and it seems he hungry to score goals.

I hope Thorton pounds Neil into the ice….he is such a turdface..

    • HabFanSince72 says:

But a tough turdface. He fought Chara last game, and didn’t do badly.

      Tough or crazy.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

    • Bill says:

I can’t root for that. Hmm. How about Thornton pounds Neil, then accidentally punches himself in the face and winds up in the Quiet Room?

Someone should teach Patches how to check.

  9. punkster says:

FYI…Thornton wants a piece of Neil in the Boston game. He even throws his gloves off and tries to scrap but Neil declines….for now.

Even as I don’t care about the result of these games anymore, I still can’t stomach looking at Gomez in that lineup. Please God, make Gomez wife convince him to retire in the off-season!

Don’t have a good read on what Molson will do with this management group. And I don’t trust them not to try give him another chance next year, just to continue masking their screw up.

  11. Bill says:

Anyone here think Bourque is any better than Cammalleri? Serious question.

If you go to the Habs website, it should say “Tank Together” and not “Rise Together” at this time of the year..

  14. RC-51 says:

Is it wrong to be happy when Habs are losing, and pissed off when they score?

  15. HardHabits says:

The Habs have been going through an existential crisis for some time now. The word identity comes into play.

Somebody earlier wrote about how Pollock said winning begets tradition not the other way around.

When Gainey took over the captaincy the Habs were still a very good regular season team. They were 3rd over-all for each year from 1979-80 through to 1981-82. They were not a very good play-off team though. This was also the era of the Habs starting to play boring hockey, in a sense mirroring its Selke winning captain. I know I am going to take a lot of flack for saying that. So let me placate those who would think me obtuse. Gainey is obviously one of the all time greats. He wrote the book on being a defensive forward. They created the Selke trophy because of him. If it hadn’t have been for Mario Lemieux the North Stars with him as coach would have won the Cup in ’91. As GM, he built the Stars to consecutive play-off berths winning one Cup. He’s a HOFer. He was also the epitome of the gentlemen warrior. I still would have rather have had Robinson as captain back then but when they announced Gainey I accepted as it was the team’s decision.

At any rate. He was the last captain of the Golden Era. Since he retired the room has been in disarray. Worse there has been interference from ownership which has resulted in division and squandering of resources in the name of either enforcing order or saving face.

I always valued Gainey’s role as a defensive forward but I still preferred the play of Jacques Lemaire. To me Lemaire was the quintessential two-way forward. He back checked but he also scored. You think DD is crafty? Lemaire was a master.

There is a point to all this. Identity.

I think the owners need to build the team with players but let the players forge the team’s identity, not try to impose one from above or from the past.

I will always believe that Gainey’s heart was in the right place. Sometimes I wonder if he let it get in the way of his better judgement. He did yeoman work as GM but I think it is time to truly pass the torch.

  16. HabinBurlington says:

Man Price is confident playing the puck.

  17. twilighthours says:

Desharnais needs to shoot the puck a lot more.

He also needs to work with lead pucks over tg summer.

  18. The Erik Cole line and Alexei Emelin.. the only positives from this year. And that ..high pick :)
    Tank Habs tank!

  19. Flobomb12 says:

Anyone who has said DD is slow(not sure what they were smoking to begin with) but that goal right there shows his speed and skill… what a beauty!! He will turn into a 70 point guy.

  20. theox_8 says:

how this guy is signed for 850000 is beyond me what a steal!!

    Nice shot DD!

Some one blogged habs should play Budaj for most of the remaining games to secure a bottom 3 spot…. I say Price is doing just fine in that department.

I think Halak is better than Price.

  32. HabinBurlington says:

What a surprise, a Quebec born goalie playing well against the Habs!

  33. twilighthours says:

That goal was as much gorges as subban. He gave up too much space to st Louis.

  34. diehardhab says:

Stream went out. Anyone got a working one?

    @MTLJosh

  35. Dr.Rex says:

IF by chacne PG remains with the club come late June is it possible that he wouls trade out top 5 pick? Its become quite clear that he focuses in on a particular player he likes like Bourque and goes for it. Scary thought.

  36. Mondou6 says:

Just out of curiosity, why was that a TB penalty? At first glance, it looked to me like White skated directly into Commodore. I thought White was going to get called.

  37. P St. Pierre says:

    Really like Geoffrion so far…

  39. Bill says:

If you look at the replay, the Lightning player in the middle tried to grab the pass and almost succeeded. That’s probably why Subban instinctively pulled away from Stamkos for a half-second … no-one had the guy in the middle.

But the puck glanced off guy-in-the-middle’s stick and bounced right to Stamkos. Unfortunate play, but not really PK’s fault.

    • HabinBurlington says:

agree, was a bit of a weird broken play, finished by a guy with a great nose for the net.

      • Bill says:

Yet people immediately blame Subban, why??

        Full Breezer 4 Life

        • ffenliv says:

Because he hasn’t really had a defensively sound year, and the quick replay showed only Stamkos going right by Subban.

          • Exit716 says:

Yeah it was totally Subban’s fault that he’s been thrust into the number one defense job this year because the idiots in management took Don Meehan;’s word that Markov wasn’t a glorified member of the f’n War Amps.

          • Bill says:

I think he’s been quite solid defensively this year: much better than last year. Especially in the second half. Good point about the replay though.

            Full Breezer 4 Life

          • ffenliv says:

Ya, upon seeing the entire sequence, I’m much less inclined to throw it on Subban. It does make we wonder, though, about the difference between a good and a great defenseman. Does a great player react faster, or maybe understand more quickly what’s about to happen?

The difference between Darche and Crosby is made up of a lot of little things. Maybe this is one of those things for Subban. Maybe if it is, it will come with time.

  40. psyko514 says:

Having 6 AHL call-ups changes nothing when you have Stamkos in your lineup.

You cannot win, Bolts. If you strike the Habs down, they shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
