Your Montreal Canadiens NEVER quit.
With their emotional lkeader, Brandon Prust, in the room with a shoulder injury, the Canadiens outshot the home team 13-2 in the third period and got goals from Brian Gionta, Alexei Emelin and Brendan Gallagher to erase a 3-1 deficit.
The win was the third of their road trip and moved the Canadiens back atop the Eastern Conference standings.
Tampa Bay’s attack – one of the NHL’s most potent – did not get a shot on goal in the third period until 18 minutes had elapsed.
By then, the Canadiens had 13 shots and three goals.
P.K. Subban, the workhorse of the D corps, played 27:42.
Michael Ryder had five SoG and two assists.
On a night of misery in the faceoff circle, call-up Gabriel Dumont went 8-4 … and saw ice time while the Canadiens were protecting their lead.
Tampa Bay is sinking like a stone in the Southeast Division. And after that third-period no-show in his team’s own barn, nd Guy Boucher might want to avoid buying green bananas.

Nice play by Ryder.

Ta-dahhhhh!
Against two very good coaches this week, the Habs’ defensive zone system was sorely tested. During the Pittsburgh game and again during that terrifying second period against Carolina, the Hab’s approach of mobbing the puck carrier with two or three guys was exploited very effectively by Byelsma and Muller. They had their guys hang back a bit and focussed on getting the puck quickly to the resulting uncovered players and mayhem ensued, with our guys scrambling to get back into defensive positions. MT seemed to get the situation back under control against the Hurricanes after his time out. I’m looking forward to seeing whether Boucher tries this with the Habs tonight and how MT deals with it.
Starting with installing an AHLer!
I’m also looking forward.
And who’s going to cover for Josh while he pursues keeping his scoring streak alive?

Is Dumont really tough? Like Gallagher for example. I am hearing lots of comments that he is.
Dumont gets quite a few PIM. He will scrap. He knocked down Joe colborne (a bigger guy) of the Marlies with one punch. Must have a big heart.
But he also put up big offensive numbers in the Q. It was a good team and yes it was the Q. But the guy has decent hands.
Is Budaj in net?

that threw me off, I’m watching rds too and i saw budaj in net during warmups…
Dumont is a tough little guy. Just ask Joe Colborne.
I wonder if Dumont could become a poor man’s version of Brad Marchand. He’s got energy and some scoring touch.
That was a funny fight. No wonder the Bruins traded him.
“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin
Don’t need him to be a poor-mans Marchand, we’ve already got that. His name is Brendan Gallagher. He’ll hit bigger players, he runs into just about any area on the ice, and he can put up some points. He’s not really ‘poor’, though.
Gallagher and Marchand play a very similar style. The only difference, really, is that one wears red, white, and blue.
Don’t forget Dearnais, Bouillon and Plecky in that VW Boone!
The Habs are playing two teams that are down for the count. Both Florida teams are 3-7 in their last ten games. Tampa is starting a career AHL goalie and Florida has a year ending injury list.
The Habs need to have the killer instinct here before they face NJ and Ottawa next week. Anything less than three points will be total failure.
I agree Steve. I’m a little nervous about tonight’s game(I’m nervous for all games).Wish we were playing Florida tonight and T Bay tomorrow. I’d also take 3 out of 4 points. St Louis always plays well against the Habs.

Perhaps if Desjardins gets a shutout he would appear genius like, but that ain’t gonna happen..
…I was certain Pateryn would play because He is the element both Bergevin and Therrien knew was missing in Our defense mix …if He doesn’t disappoint there likely will be more trades, including Weber and Kaberle …hopefully for draft-picks
…agree, it’s been surreal that MacLean has kept the Senators heads above water …but, as much, it is Murray’s drafting that has provided the Sens it’s tremendous depth

Their re-build on the fly two years ago was very impressive. They now have a lot of good prospects. I’m surprised teams like Calgary haven’t done the same given how successful Ottawa was with that strategy.
…in this era of a strict cap and early free agency, there should be no reserve to blow-up what You know is an old underperforming team
…as long as the owner has put sufficient resources in scouting …and a GM smart enough to identify talent
One thing is certain: the Canadiens can expect Desjardins literally to stand on his head tonight.
?? you realize that you are saying he will do a headstand? he may figuratively stand on his head, but I highly doubt he literally will.
Yeah, they start in 4th place but are ahead (in points) of the teams in 2nd and 3rd. Lame.
I’m hoping Josh extends his scoring streak tonight.
Did Pouliot invite him for drinks after the game?
Last year for starters.
Oops – re: Ryder comment below
Look people. Forget Perry. The only way the Habs should sign Perry if it is for 6 million or less. Since that isn’t going to happen move on.
The Habs cap space is going to go in two directions:
1) raises for home grown talent
2) free agent signings of the gritty and charactered utility player type, think Brandon Prust
Agreed. When it comes to free agent signings, Bergevin showed last summer that he is looking for depth and character players, not stars. He’d have to overpay hugely for a player like Perry, and if it didn’t work out, we’d be in trouble. Look at Brad Richards in New York.

If the Habs give out a 7 year, 56M contract, then I want somebody else besides Perry.
At what point in his NHL career did Ryder ever live up to expectations or fulfil his potential?
He hasn’t had a bad career considerig he was an 8th round pick
______________________________________________________
“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”
I guess. But I seem to recall MUCH excitement when he originally signed. I never saw the connection between that excitement and what he actually delivered.
Well, we really haven’t had many 30-goal scorers in the last 10 years, so yeah. he can be exciting.
People are fickle! Guy started in the ECHL after being drafted in the 8th round with a long shot to even play in the minors. Works his way up to the NHL and becomes a 30-35 goal scorer BUT he is a bum because he doesn’t score 40-50 goals. Keep it in perspective folks.
Am I missing something here? I though Ryder was this week’s whipping boy!
Ok, maybe I’m under-appreciating him. But I don’t think I’m fickle because I was never really convinced. ANd you’re right about perspective, which is why I brought it up here. Didn’t intend to suggest he’s a bum, only that I’ve always had reservations about him.
I have reservations too but he has been an overachiever his whole pro career. You have to respect that drive, the same as DD shows.
I just don’t see it. And compared to DD, I don’t see it even more! But I have no doubt you have better perception than I do, and I’ll try harder to see it, starting tonight. Compare notes after maybe. Cheers.
17 points in 25 playoff games for Boston in a third line role was pretty good in 2011, not to mention a pretty good glove hand in net.
35 goals last year playing a lot with Eriksson was also pretty good. But I see him as a third liner myself, like how Boston used him.
Good points H-H, Phil. Cheers.
35 goals not to be sneezed at. Maybe he finds his groove soon. But can’t imagine MT was overjoyed.
Getzlaf wanted $9 million a year but gave the Ducks the hometown discount of $8.25 million.
How charitable!

So we are now in 4th place in the East. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
Flyers had nothing for the Bruins today from what I saw.
They came out hitting but couldn’t stay with the Bruins.
Weren’t they reasonably good defensively if there was no further scoring after Boston’s 2-minute 3-goal blitz in the 1st?

Okay, let’s put it this way, if the season continues like this, Montreal could face Ottawa or Toronto in round 1.. Those would be sweet series.

So the ducks extended Getzlaf… Perry is still up, With Cole gone and cap space available this summer I’m wondering what you guys would think if MB tried to sign him this summer?
I suspect there will be 30 GMs trying to sign him. It will come down to where he wants to go and who overpays.
We will have almost $50 ml tied up in 15 players but it would be nice.
Trade Kaberle and buy-out Gionta and who knows?
______________________________________________________
“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”
That includes Kaberle gone. Should have clarified, my bad!
Maybe it doesn’t or shouldn’t matter, but is it possible that Perry is a jerk? Not saying I think he is one, but saying I’ve heard it. And if he is, do we really want that, having not long ago got rid of some players with a jerky side?
I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets traded to a high profile team in the east and ends up signing long-term with said team, unless he wants to go to Toronto. In that case he’ll go to July 1st.
Wouldn’t mind but now I think that MB wants a balanced team (like Boston). Don’t see him spending $8 million on a forward. Clarkson on the other hand…

A poster on the previous thread (sorry, forgot the tag) makes a good case for the quiet things Armstrong does.
Maybe that explains why it’s White who’s sitting for Dumont tonight and not Armstrong.
Or. Is White dog-housed again? Did I miss something?
Armstrong has more all-around skill and is a known entity to MT in a season where he stepped in with a new team and had virtually no training camp.
Whitey’s truculence probably not required in Tampa.

Sounds good. Cheers.
Armstrong is definitely underrated by Habs fans. Its like we see the name and expect him to score 20 like in Atlanta.
Thats not who he is anymore, not with the injuries.
Now he’s a fourth liner, paid appropriately (1m), who kills penalties for us, protects the puck, plays solid defensively 5 on 5, doesn’t take dumb penalties, and is reliable and trusted by the coaches. I think he’s done everything asked of him so far.

Pateryn is 64 and Dumont wears 37.

So when does Bergevin get Clowe? Now or closer to April 3rd. They should try to get him now while he stock is low. If they wait until the deadline and Clowe goes on a scoring streak, they are going to be looking for a 1st and a prospect. I think right now we could get him for a 2nd and a 3rd.

He has zero goals and six points this year. He’s going to have to start doing something to be worth anything. I wouldn’t give up two top-90 picks for Clowe. Watching him right now, man he’s slow.
I guarantee you Clowe will be a Hab by April 3rd. He just fits the mold that Bervegin is looking to build. We have lots of draft picks this year and we had lots last year. As much as people will disagree with me, there is such a thing as too many draft picks. You can only have 50 contracts so some of these players will not be signed or we can trade the picks now for immediate help. I would be shocked if he doesn’t become a Hab. I was saying this all year that they should sign him, way before LeBrun mentioned it.

The script is old and repeats itself. In the ’80′s, a young no. 18 for the Flames tried to take on Dave Semenko, probably so the large guys with skill on the Flames wouldn’t have to fight cement-fist – Jim Peplinski and Joel Otto (Flames also had big Jamie Macoun, and Neil Sheehy). I hope your right. He is a streaky goal scorer. Once he gets one, he could bag another 4 or 5 goals in 4 or 5 games.
Et Le But
I really like Ryan White. He brings energy, wins face offs and stands up for his teammates. You’d think a guy like that would learn a lot from a Prust or last year’s Moen. But instead, he’s playing himself out of town.
Gabriel Dumont can’t bring the fists like White can. But he’s a real pest, doesn’t take a shift off and will score some… And like any call-up, he’s hungry.
I hope White gets the chance to get his act together. He’s got a bit of Chris Nilan in him. But he needs to bring it every shift and compete. It’s game on now.
White is still young with a lot to learn and he is a great team guy. Can’t give up on him yet.
Et Le But
Definitely playing a timid game since he came back.
What a horrible back to back for the Habs! They will finish the game tonight at say 10pm local time. Then by the time the get out of there and to Sunrise it will be close to midnight. Then the clocks go ahead an hour. And they have a 5pm est game tomorrow evening. Good job whoever made that schedule. The boys are going to be bagged by the 3rd period tomorrow. Dietz will make the Habs. His work ethic is too strong, and his character on and off the ice are off the charts.
Heard good things about both, apparently Thrower is a beauty
I have heard the opposite
Ah really? I just remember everyone being stoked we got him so late
Talent-wise he was a solid prospect last season but he hasn’t played as good this year (better of late however).
I’m from Saskatoon and have heard nothing but good things about Dietz, but have heard Thrower is less committed. I just hope he matures well.
My first impression of Thrower was a James Wisniewski, which would be awesome (grit, shot, breakout pass, some D, mean streak), but we’ll see.
Thrower hasn’t brought as much offence this season, but his defensive game is better than last year.

This year the Habs are not quitters. yes they have the odd off game. Are they a first place team. IMO I really don’t think so but. They are a good team and you don’t have to be a 1st place team to win a cup.
If they keep on plugging away. Who knows. They just may surprise everyone. myself I like this team. Unless something drastically happens. They’ll make the playoffs and that will be a big improvement over last year …..
A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff and management. and they will build a Stanley cup team in Montreal ….
Habs are not really a first place team? What is a first place team? Is it the team that is in first place?

Found the handling of the younger Brandon Prust fascinating. He has been traded three times already:
1. Prust, Matthew Lombardi, and a 1st round draftpick from Calgary to Phoenix for the one and only Ollie Jokinen.
2. Prust from Phoenix to Calgary for Jim Vandermeer.
3. Prust and Ollie J. from Calgary to New York Rangers for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik.

Paul Maclean is a good coach but there is also this from recent 30 thoughts by Elliotte Friedman…
25. Back in AHL training camp, Ottawa coach Paul MacLean and Binghamton counterpart Luke Richardson discussed philosophy. Richardson wanted to play the same way as the big club for consistency. MacLean wanted Richardson to have some flexibility. They decided to co-ordinate terminology and drills. One of the reasons the Senators are holding on amid all their injuries is, when players get called up, the familiarity creates comfort.
26. For example, one of the ideas MacLean likes to preach is “fast defence.” Basically, he wants his forwards to create three lanes of support for defencemen trying to move or pass the puck out of their own zone. When the AHLers are called up, they understand what that means, no explanation necessary. “You can never move the puck fast enough for Paul,” Richardson said
It used to be that way in Buffalo with their Rochester (I think) AHL team. AHL call-ups, like Drew Stafford and Clarke MacArthur, would fit seamlessly into the Sabres’ system. I’m sure it’s like that with detroit and Adirondack. It makes sense to run your AHL team that way.

Putting Dziurzynski out on the wrecking line opposite McLaren was the height of incompetence .The Kid is not an enforcer. He is barely a heavyweight with a 48% win record with limited experience. He never played major Junior hockey for Chr#st sakes. If MacLean didn”t tell the kid to stay the hell away from McLaren(who is 25lbs heavier and has one of the hardest right hooks in the game),Then he should be fired.
if the habs go 8 - 13 - 3 over the last part of the season they have a %70.0 chance of making the playoffs. if they win just 1 more it goes to 88% according to http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Eastern/Northeast/Montreal.html
Playoff qualification threshold: Last year, 8th place Ottawa garnered 92 pts. (as did Washington in 7th) which adjusted for 48 games is 53.4 points. 8th place L.A. had 95 points which is equivalent to 55.7 points over 48 games. Therefore it will take around 54 points to garner eighth place in the East. There are no interconference games but because Edmonton and Columbus are both in the west and will have very low points totals, it will probably take 56 points to garner eighth place in the West.
Montreal earned 34 points in its first half and need a minimum of 20 in its second half.
Tampa Bay earned 21 points in its first half and need a minimum of 33 in its second half.

I don’t understand what’s with all the suprise and hate on for the Habs being in first right now? If you watched any of the season last year, I’m guessing off the top of my head that this team blew atleast 20+ 2 goal leads last year, in retrospect because these things happen, let’s say they got 30-36 more points from being able to hold those leads down like they’ve been doing this year and the Habs would be in a comfortable playoff spot. The difference this year is that I really thing Pierre Gauithier and the count coach Martin that the players didn’t want to play for these guys. It all starts from the top and I think Mr.Bergevin is doing everything right now and the players seem inspired right now….how long will this last who knows? But we’ve got enough raw talent from the 1st to 3rd line to win games….how well would we do in the playoffs though? Now that is the question?

Thanks. Even though we still keep bringing in the points, I miss them both.
At what point does the media stop mentioning the 6-0 loss to the leafs? Its old news. I expect the toronto media to keep hyping it (and they do) but the Montreal Gazette? Go Penguins, do Canada a favour. Go Habs.
Lets go habs
So the cap hit this season is 70.2, and at the beginning of the year our salary was about 68 million. Next year the cap will drop to 64.3m.
After the Gomez buyout, and Cole being moved, our salary will drop to about 57m, and if Kaberle is bought out it will be about 53m. Pacioretty’s extension kicks in so it’ll be around 56m.
However, we have a few players we’ll have to either resign or replace:
Desharnais will get the biggest raise.
Ryder or a new top 6 RW
White, Armstrong, Noke, or a completely new 4th line.
Bouillion and Weber, or a new third pairing (Tinordi or Pateryn?)
Budaj, or a new backup
We will have approx. 17M in cap space after Ryder, Soups, Army, Kaberle are off the books..We have enough cheap talent in the minors to cover for those losses..I wouldn’t worry too much about the cap…

Yes, I’m a Hab fan..Wanna fight about it?
Who is Soups?
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
I think it’s Boullion, though “Gravy” would be a better handle

My concern isn’t really how much cap space we have. I was more looking at what areas we will need to address.
Our 4th line is probably our weakest line at the moment. Moen will be the only returning player, but I imagine we will re sign White. Armstrong will probably not be back I imagine (I hope), but who will we get to replace him? Sign Eric Fehr? Or bring up Blunden full-time? What do you think?
If we do sign a solid top 6 winger, it will allow us to probably deal Gionta. And our depth at center may allow us to move DD/Eller/Pleks to add either third line depth (another Prust?), or to go after another franchise piece.
Our third D pairing is probably our weakest as well. We are lacking some size there as well as a steady shutdown Dman that can log some hard minutes, as well as play on the PK. Pateryn and Tinordi might be able to step in, but we may look to free-agency as well.
Who knows what will happen with Budaj.
Tinordi, Pateryn, Beaulieu, Bournival all ready to make the jump next season?
Minus Ryder, Soups, Kaberle, and Army..

So are Dietz and Thrower a defensive pair?
Maybe we should trade all the 2nds and 3rds for 5ths?

You’re right……off topic, but concerning David Clarkson impending UFA – he was never drafted. Was a free agent signing just like David Desharnais. When Clarkson’s name comes up from time to time, some folks presumed he was a New Jersey pick.
“May you live in interesting times.”
Had the pleasure of watching Clarkson in Kitchener, he was a star here, won a Mem Cup and still has many ties in Kitchener including his charity “Clarkie’s Kids” real class act.
Nothing against Ryder, he is what he is, but he’s a poor fit on MT’s Habs, nothing Therrien hates worse than a one dimensional soft player. If he can start scoring on the power play it will be okay, but so far … snake eyes.
Not encouraging to watch the GM go into sell mode when the team is in 1st place. But maybe Ryder can start scoring and maybe Bergevin can find a better use for Cole’s salary, though I honestly don’t like the chances of the latter.
Full Breezer 4 Life
Why would Cole’s contract be easier to move at the trade deadline? No one knows what was going on there, but Cole was lacklustre. Like in Edmonton. Maybe Ryder gets moved easier at the deadline. At any rate, we are no worse off. WE have a 3rd and maybe something else.
thrower had A LOT of stuff happen to him off ice in the last two years, including with his family. Hopefully he’s able to pull through because he’s a good prospect.
I don’t think it’s sell mode.. IMO it’s ‘we don’t have enough buyouts for PGs mess’ mode. Cole is a valuable player, but I don’t think he’s worth it for the next 2 seasons. Short term, ya Dallas wins it. Long term, Habs for sure. MB seems smart so he won’t be wasting money, but he will spend it. I also didn’t like the way Cole was talking, sounding all depressed all the time and speaking of retirement… I say good timing on the trade, the team is still winning.
to make the trade a win this year, he just has to out perform Eric Cole. So far he has. Pre Trade Eric Cole was horrible and post trade Eric Cole has continues to be horrible.
I just don’t understand how anyone thinks the Habs win that trade. In two months they have nothing to show for Cole except a 3rd rounder. You will all say, “yeah, but look how much money they’re saving” as if we are cheering for the Habs’ accountants instead of their hockey players.
I don’t care how much they save, unless it is used to sign a better player than Cole, and why don’t we just wait and see if that actually happens, ok? But unless it does, Habs lose the trade.
Full Breezer 4 Life
I have a hard time seeing that move as sell mode. Cole was not having a very good season in case you don’t remember. Michael Ryder not only had as many goals and more points than Cole last season but he had more than double his points this season and double the amount of goals. Since Ryder has been here he has 4 points in 5 games, Cole has 1 goal in 3 games.
Another thing about the timing is that if Cole would’ve continued to play poorly, coupled with the fact that he has two more seasons at 4.5 million cap hit he might not have gotten the same kind of return. Teams are looking for rentals at the deadline, not 34 year old declining players with 2 expensive extra years on their contract. Bergevin got a deal in which he was not losing offensive talent in the present, in fact he brought in a more productive player, he freed up cap space and added a draft pick in a deep draft class. The timing shows me that MB is always listening to offers and actively looking to improve the team.
As for your second comment about having nothing to show for Cole at the end of the season I think you are underestimating Bergevin. Do you really think he is not going to find a replacement for Cole?
At the end of the season he will have enough cap space to go in almost any direction he wants. If he is satisfied with what Ryder brought to the team he could choose to bring him back. Ryder had several good years here before his falling out and with the direction the team is going I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to stay. If MB chooses to move on he could target Perry or Clowe both younger and equally, if not more, physical than Cole.
Another quick point about Ryder is he is much better in the playoffs than Cole. Cole has 14 points in 43 career playoff games and although he has a ring he has never been a key piece on a stanley cup run. Ryder on the other hand has 43 points in 70 career playoff games and was a big part of the Bruins run putting up 8-9-17 totals in 24 games.

Holmgrem has taken a really good team and completely dismantled it.
Once they cleaned house to make room for Bryz, the wheels completely fell off. Why they ever got rid of Richards and Carter is beyond dumb. Holmgrem is the definition of a knee jerk reaction GM. Then to trade JVR for Luke Schenn completely solidified his status as a very questionable GM. The leafs completely hosed the Flyers with that deal.
Et Le But
Wow thats great to hear. Have you seen Dietz play much this year?
Et Le But
He’s a huge fan of Ayn Rand. I don’t think her ideas are so much ‘conservative’ as loony.
That would still place him to the left of Stephen Harper.
Yah that makes him such a better person, cuz Left is Right, right?
Atilla was a Democrat…he slaughtered everybody equally…
“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin
We had a lot of people around here that wanted a Holmgren as our GM. Not afraid to deal. Come to think of it we still have a lot of those guys still here.
I’m not sure getting rid of Richards and Carter was so dumb. Those guys apparently liked to party a lot, and the Flyers got a great return for them. Also, by the end of their last year in Pihlly, the team was a mess. There were clearly problems in the room, a bit like the Habs in 2009.
The blunder was signing Bryzgalov to nine years, a move there was no need for. The Flyers seem to have a blind spot in regard to goaltending; they repeatedly mistake mediocrity for excellence. On top of that, they have problems on defence this year. They lost Carle to free agency, and Pronger won’t be coming back. They were unable to replace those guys adequately over the summer, although they wanted Suter and gave an offer sheet to Weber. The JVR trade was a measure of their desperation over their defence, and could still work out for them, although at the moment it looks as though the Leafs won it. But Schenn is only 23 or 24; by the time he reaches his late 20′s, he could be a good defenceman.
Her ideas are radical, not conservative, but I guess that’s what the “conservative” movement has become. Sorta tea-baggy.

Yeah I know. A lot of guys here think that the PS3 NHL 13 is real life and makes them all GM’s. All I can say is, Thank God we have Bergevin.

I find him worse than Cherry.
I agree. I find McLean’s act of playing the straight man to Cherry’s buffoonery to be even more objectionable.
I can’t watch either one of them. So glad to have RDS.
Ryders best period since he’s been back.
In the middle of trying to play devils advocate to Cherry’s stance on fighting, Maclean suddenly interjects, “you know I agree with you when it comes to fighting” well thanks for trying to maintain any semblence of presenting two views on the Matter you JackASS!
He’s a damn good player. Huge positive presence in most games. You can see why the Rangers miss him.

The ryan clowe rumours will now gain more steam.
think he already was playing with a bruised or partially torn labrum or something in his shoulder
I hope not.The asking price would be too much for a rental player. We’d have to give up Gallagher or Galchenyuk a top pick and a guy like Tinordi or Beaulieu.Too much of the future for a 36 year old guy on the downside of his career.
If that is the price, I want no part of it.
Keep building this team slowly and surely.
