Liveblog: Canadiens blow 3-0 lead, win Shootout

161604798_slide

Carey Price stopped all three shots in the Shootout.
And the recently-maligned David Desharnais beat Anders Lindback to salvage a 4-3 win.

The Canadiens were playing a textbook road game.
They led 3-0 with six minutes to go.
Then disaster struck … three times.

The home team scored three times on seven third-period shots.
The Canadiens had a power-play during Overtime, but Anders Lindback was spectacular.

The Shootout:

Hedman: Save

Galchenyuk: Miss

St. Louis: Save

Desharnais: GOAL!

Stamkos: SAVE!!!

An curious thought just struck me. Would Josh Gorges be a greater impact D-MAN if he bulked up a bit?

    • Mark C says:

How do you know he hasn’t?

      • habstrinifan says:

He doesnt look it… plain and simple. For instance would you say that Kaberle looks as if he is a gym rat type and is it a fair to wonder if a player like Kaberle could stem the decline in his play by the increased confidence and strength that a rigourous regimen (aka Gary Roberts) brings. There are others.

I think we need a left shot dman for the powerplay with a good shot to take markovs feeds from the left side ala Bergeron, souray, schneider etc. we have kaberle but he doesn’t have that shooter mindset

  5. HabInHfx says:

Who can we package and dump at the mid-way point? Is Kaberloser locked in?

And lets also not forget Max had amazing recoveries, is a beast and can score > 30 goals a season

WOW! I come on to make my first post of the day and I feel really outta place. There seems to be boundless optimism.

Well I’ll post anyhows. If HABS do not WIN this game with a compete level above anything so far this season, then I will be very worried re the true status of this group and our chances for the playoffs.

I dont mean Prust fighting. Or scrums etc. I mean work on the boards compete. Not big hits but consistent ‘taking the body’, and squeezing the man against the boards patiently but firmly and digging for the puck etc. If I dont see that and especially if we lose… then I am afraid I cant join in the group hug while agreeing to look at the pass few games as normal lows; or the fault of a few individuals.

This is a big game for the team. And the compete level of the team MUST compensate for slumps/errors/etc. And that include the people making the errors or in the slumps. An indiividual can still show compete level despite being out of sysnc.

    This is a telling game!!!!

Remember the last real playoff run. Remember the ‘compete level’ of people like Pyatt and Moore and Cammallieri and Subban. That’s what we need.

    • JF says:

Agree. Saturday was disturbing because they played not only as if they weren’t ready but as if they didn’t care. If we start seeing a lot of that sort of thing, I’ll be worried about the team and the coaching staff – who until Saturday had seemed to be doing a very good job.

      • Blondie says:

I don’t know if they played like they didn’t care, it seemed more like they just couldn’t do anything about it. I’ve never seen them look that disorganized…like they just met in the locker room before the game.

He was glorious when he was wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge though wasn’t he people?

    Shaker out!

  30. SteverenO says:

Is there any real difference between Desharnias and Plekanec?
    here are the facts:

    Even strength ice time:
    Plekanes – 153 minutes
    Desharnais- 144 minutes

GOals scored while on the ice even strength:

    Plekanec – 5
    Desharnais- 4 ( compareto Galchenyuk–8 goals in 110 minutes)

Goals allowed while on the ice (even strength)

    Plekanes – 8
    Desharnais- 9 ( compare Galchenyuk ( 2 GA in 110 minutes)

PP Ice time– Team PP goals while on the ice

    Plekanes – 36 minutes —7 goals
    Desharnais- 34 minutes — 6 goals

the team has not yet scored with Galchenyuk on the PP.

The point is everyone should relax, and let the players play.

The team will win and lose as a team. Everyone must carry their weight regardless of what line they play on. If a player makes a mistake, takes a stupid penalty, creates a turn-over, or loses a face-off, it is up to the team to make sure that it does not result in a great scoring chance, and up to the goalie to stop it if it does.

The TEAM needs to score goals when they get great opportunities, breakaways , 2 on 1`s etc..

The coach needs to be sharp and put the right players in the right situations.

    Go HABS Go!

  31. OMG says:

The 3rd line should be kept together for our future. with the exception of Plekanec and Prust for a little toughness. This summer MB and his staff should try and get rid of the remaining TOP six. The 4th line keep Prust for one position. The rest Good-Bye to finally give us our real Montreal Canadians Back.

    What do you think?

Chris Stewart or Ryane Clowe look like much better options in my opinion….

      • alfieturcotte says:

I disagree. Boyle is a very solid 2 way center, imposing, soft hands for a big guy, and best of all – strong on face offs. I’d take him over Prust any day.

      • NightRyder says:

It would cost an arm and a leg to get either of those guys.
You’re not adding Boyle as a fighter, just someone who’s hard on the forecheck and has decent hands.
A low-cost stopgap until, God forbid, we ever develop a power forward of our own.

  41. Danno says:

    Is this Play-by-Play feature new?

  42. Phil C says:

The best thing DD can do to improve his game is to buy Cole a gym membership next summer.

    • NightRyder says:

Expecting Cole to be a 35-goal, first-line winger ever again is a stretch. He’s a decent second-line, 20-25 guy who’s getting up there in age. Unlikely you’d ever get much for him in trade, since he’s hideous on the playoffs. I’m hard-pressed to see why folks would wonder why he seems a little “off” when he’s already broached the notion of retirement. The sooner he’s passed on the depth chart, the better. Until then, just be happy with mid-level production from a decent, mid-level player.

      • helluva habs fan says:

I don’t expect 35 goals every year. I wouldn’t mind seeing him accept a pass once in a while. Perhaps not turning over the puck everytime he has it. Also, maybe not falling on his ass everytime he’s checked. Those are reasonable expectations, no?

      • Phil C says:

You may be right that Cole is past his best before date, but I think it is still too soon to say. Last year his point totals for the first 3 months were 4,10, and 13. The year before when he had 52 points, 33 of them came in the last three months.

I would take a decent second liner and at $4.5M, it is a fair price. Right now he is playing like a marginal NHLer. But when he is on his game, he can be dominant.

    • helluva habs fan says:

Maybe also a good set of prosthetic hands to replace the cinder blocks he currently uses.

  43. the Octopus says:

I was quite euphoric when Thrower was drafted by us in 2012, he had heart, character, toughness, offence form the blueline, and a mean streak a mile wide. I was amazed that we were able to pick him up in the second round, he seemed to me like a freakishly awesome hybrid of Kevin Bieska and Dave Manson, a perfect compliment to Galchenyuk and Subban on our future teams. He seemed like a future fixture of our defense, I pictured him anchoring our second pairing, wearing the Captains C, crushing oncoming forwards with open ice hits, scoring 30 points a year, beating Brad Marchand to a bloody pulp and taunting the Boston bench, restoring honor to the CH.

Then the 2012-13 season reared it’s ugly head, he struggles all season long at both ends of the ice, his character has been called into question, rumors of seedy off-ice issues persist, the chances of him having a NHL career look slim to none at this stage.

what a shame, he looked so promising……..

  44. habs-fan-84 says:

Harrison Harper has one ugly mug.

  45. byrneoNL says:

Here’s how it is: DD was a relative unknown last year. Now he’s on everyone’s radar. He has to work twice as hard now, and that’s not easy for someone who was already giving 100% (mostly). He is not getting to the puck first, and when he does, he is being outmuscled constantly. He should probably ask St. Louis for advice tonight. Before the game, preferably. He’s got to do something to adapt.

Max Pac is firing too many wristers into goalie chests from no mans land. He’s gotta get back to the dirty areas and he knows it. The one I’m least worried about is Max.

Cole – Not the same this year. He is slow, and not the least bit angry. Hey Erik: PEOPLE _WOULD_ like you when you’re angry.
On his rushes he keeps driving to the outside right and D-men just ride him out of the play. Even the Leafs D were doing that with ease. He’s gotta start cutting in toward the middle, and let the trailer support him if he gets tied up or checked.

    * Also, sitting Ryan White hasn’t put us back on the Win Train. Kid’s on a short leash, knows he’s used up all his “Get out of the dog house free” cards. Tampa Bay is not known for thuggery, but Moen and Armstrong have been crappier than White, just in less bone headed and dramatic ways. White’s been on the PK and done well at it – he can actually kinda play. It’s time to bring him back.

Habs maybe interested in Ryan O’Reilly in Colorado you say. The only thing I think they would gain would be, Size, I don’t think he’s a better player than DD and he’s only 4-years younger we already have an extra center in Eller so we’d be getting another center to have in the press box. Looks like we’d have to trade Eller and maybe DD to make room.

I’m not sure if he’d be better than Eller as he hasn’t really had a good chance of proving himself but that would have to be Mr. MB’s decision.

I hate to say this. But because everyone thinks size is the answer to all our problems DD would have to be the one to go.
we would be adding another young Player to our Roster with size. I think He could be a DD with size.

  51. Sportfan says:

I think tonight will be a much better game than saturday obviously but the Lightning aren’t a team (although malone is a douche) they don’t play the way the Bruins, Leafs and Flyers play. I know we need to have some other players that make the difference against those teams, but the two Florida teams won’t be rough and tough like some other games

    http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/

  52. Bill says:

Two obvious things: first, the Habs don’t have an affirmative action policy, they have a discrimination policy, and second, it doesn’t extend to on-ice positions. The team hires coaches and managers that way, but they don’t do the same with the players.

In other words, it is clear that Desharnais does not receive and has never received special treatment for being French. The only special treatment he ever got was being invited to a training camp as an undrafted free agent. Since then he’s gotten everything the hard way, through results. He made it impossible not to put him where he was last year.

Not saying I’m the biggest fan, or that he should be the number one centre, or even that he’s better than Eller, but Desharnais deserves respect for getting where he’s gotten, and suggesting that is has something to do with being French is in his case – if not for his bosses – incorrect and a disservice to him.

Can’t be any worse than Saturday. Right?

  54. 24 Cups says:

I somehow feel I’m in a different place right now then many posters on this site.

The team finished dead last in 2012. We added three secondary players from the UFA pool. We also added two kids who show great promise but who may be slightly rushed because the team has no other options. Expectations need to be realistic.

As I have stated before, there is no one in Hamilton to help out this team at the present moment. Right now, the Habs have four solid propsects who are not on the NHL roster (Leblanc, Beaulieu, Tinordi and Collberg). Every other kid is a crap shoot. What about trades? Erskine? MacIntyre? Gimme strength.

This team is what it is right now. Same goes for the franchise. There are five new players on the roster as well as a new coach. That’s a significant turnover. Let’s take things as they are and see where it goes.

A win tonight puts the Habs on a pro-rated path to a playoff spot at the 1/4 mark of the season. I see no reason why Montreal can’t beat both sunshine teams this week. If they do, the Habs are 8-4-1. Think I’m crazy? My comeback is simply this – who would you rather have in net, Lindback and Theodore or Price?

EDIT: Bill (see above) is right, the Habs usually stumble when playing in Forida. But both the Bolts and Panthers are playing like crap right now so I’m still going with the glass half full.

      Excellent post.

    • PeterD says:

      I agree.
It took Gainey and Gauthier several years to build this team into the group we have today…and only a few months for Bergeron to add three charachter but limited players to the roster…the kids? Well I think they may be a bit rushed into service too, but they are the best of the prospects and the fans needs something to cheer and get excited about…so they play.
I think we will see a move or two at deadline and again this summer with free agency and releases (Kaberle…see ya).
But a quick and high performing turnaround…ain’t gonna happen for htis team…there are just too many missing pieces for anyone to expect a deep play-off run this season or next.

    • habs-fan-84 says:

You articulated almost exactly how I feel as well.

    • JF says:

I’m in the same place, Steve. The team has a few good players, two promising rookies, one of whom will almost certainly be a star, and a few decent prospects. For the most part, they’ve been playing well this season, and may possibly make the playoffs. If they don’t, I can live with that, since I feel that the organization is finally on the right path. But we’re still missing a lot of pieces, and there are no quick fixes. We all know that rebuilding on the fly doesn’t work.

I had to give my head a shake when I came on here after the game on Saturday and saw that people wanted to trade half the team for goons. I hate the fighting; I think it has no place in hockey and goons have no place on a team.

All I ask this year is that the team give an honest effort – and what disturbed me on Saturday was that they didn’t. I had hoped that under the new coaching team, no-shows were a thing of the past. Saturday’s game had better not be the start of a string of indifferent, sluggish performances.

      • NightRyder says:

Who wants to trade anything of value for a pure goon? That’s silly. I just want a real one in the system.

        • jedimyrmidon says:

Having one in reserve is fine. Problem is that the stars basically need to align for that goon to be useful in a game situation. The probability that this goon will be on the ice at that critical moment where he would be useful is pretty slim.

    • 2mins4lookinsooogood says:

Amen JF/Luke, this is no time for logical thinking … let’s trade Weber for Sid Crosby and Derek Englund …

Last year we were so close to actually being a viable mid pack team – 2nd best penalty kill, only a fraction of a goal differential and hard to beleive for some the ONLY game last year that we gave up 6 goals was a 6-5 loss early on to Colorado.

This year we start healthy and with mild upgrades at 4th line … and we find ourselves better out of the gate but no-one’s pick for the cup … sounds about right.

“Don’t crush that dwarf Alex Henry, hand me the pliers”

  55. Prust for PM says:

Moses wandered the desert for 40 years. As of this May the Canadiens will have “invested” half that time in search of the Promised Land; a Stanley Cup victory.

The Habs have one potential advantage over Moses in the pursuit of the Land of Milk and Honey. Gershom and Eliezer didn’t have video tape to pore over between “periods” or between “games.” Unfortunately Montreal usually squanders this valuable resource.

For example, the very same fans who were hailing the “return” of Andrei Markov 5 games into the season when he scored 4 goals in 3 games now want to trade him 6 games later-ditch him in the desert. Similarly, partner Emelin has been repeatedly hung out to dry in recent games after a strong start to his season when he was hitting opponents hard and often and quickly head-manning the puck.

Markov has not slowed in 2 weeks time. Emelin’s skills have not diminished in the same time period.

Opponents have effectively studied video tape and have made important between period and game-to-game adjustments. Michel Therrien’s coaching skills haven’t degraded in 10 days, either. The coaching of Canadiens’ opponents is “superior” because they excel in the video room. Third period Canadiens collapses are further evidence that Habs’ opponents are making more effective in-game adjustments.

Maybe we can steal a video coach from Nashville or New Jersey. If there’s a statistic for points gained per payroll dollar they must be among the leaders in the NHL. If we can’t beat ‘em on the ice-or in the alley-let’s beat ‘em in the video room. Let’s leave the Moses-like 46 Year Plan to the Leafs.

    Cannonading drive!!

  56. DD was about a PPG player in the AHL, along with a lot of guys like Nigel Dawes, Mark Mancari, and even Palushaj, who are nearly good enough for an offensive role in the NHL, but not quite… Keith Aucoin is another example, and probably a decent comparable. He’s 5’9″, 187lbs, and a really good passer. He’s a rock star in the AHL (37 points in 34 games so far this year, 70 in 43 last year, 72 in 53 the year before that), but when he finds himself called up to the NHL, he just doesn’t seem to have that extra gear. Up with the Isles now, at the age of 34, he’s got 5 points in 4 games. Hopefully he keeps it up. But he’s always been a career AHLer.

DD’s a better player than Aucoin, and a lot of his success last year was hard-earned with work and skill — but if we’re honest, a lot of guys could have scored 60 points between Cole and Pacioretty last year, on fire as they were, and he was lining up with great wingers almost right out of the gate.

I like DD a lot — more than a lot of folks on here I suspect — but one 60pt season with excellent linemates does not make a career, and he’s got a lot more to prove. If he doesn’t prove it soon, and with centres like Eller and Galchenyuk chomping at the bit for a chance to shine with strong wingers, it make make sense to swap him for someone bigger and tougher who can also contribute offensively — especially in a big, tough, gritty division that contains four the leagues top five teams in terms of fighting majors.

    • ed lopaz says:

DD will not be traded this season.

    • The Jackal says:

I agree man, but I think DD also contributed to the success of his wingers. They were all on fire last year. DD just gets the short end because he is, well, short. I hope he regains his form, he needs to adjust to how teams play him and stick to his strengths – strong passing and smart play. I think he can find his form again.

An alternative would be to move DD to the wing and have Eller with Cole and DD as his wingers, or something like that.

      • Habfan17 says:

It is hard for him to do that when he loses most of his draws and the battles along the boards. If he wants to stick, he needs to learn to win face offs. he is hurting the team in that department. He isn’t the type of player that will get the puck back either, He is not fast enough or physical enough. Even when he is not cleanlybeat on a faceoff, he is muscled off the puck.

DD tries hard and has heart, but the Habs need more than that. I don’t understand how fans can rate him so high after one decent season. There are so many players that had one “hit” seasons. With the Habs being so bad last year, many teams did not give them the respect they give top teams and maybe didn’t pay attention to DD like they do now.

        Habfan17

        • SteverenO says:

Loses MOST of his draws ?

Last season DD was equal to Plek in Face off efficiency, in fact he was the best on the HABs excluding Nokilainen, and as pointed out earlier, face-offs are for the most part a useless statistic. I would say that the majority of faceoffs are “draws” (neither center clearly wins) and the face off win is determined by the wingers who fight for possession of what amounts to a loose puck.

Granted, DD is having a rough start to the season, but his wingers Cole and Patch have not been doing so well either. I see DD as one of the hardest workers, and one who wins more than his share of the battles for loose pucks despite going up against bigger players. I think he is one of our smartest players, in terms of positioning and creating room and chances for his wingers. Despite only being on the ice for 4 goals in 132 minutes of ice time, the opponents have only scored 6 during that span (minus 2 even strength) this year.
Plekanec, who everyone is claiming is off to a great start, has played almost identical time at even strength and been on the ice of 5 goals for and 7 goals against (also a minus 2)
On the Power play the team has produced 6 goals in 33 minutes only one goal less that Plekanec`s 7 PP goals produced during 32 minutes of PP time.

Conclusion? There is almost ZERO difference in the effectiveness or value in the play of Plekanec versus DD this season. (except for Pleks penalty killing which has been good, but not fantastic) .

I’m not a great fan of DD, but for a moment consider that in his first full season in the league, both his linemates scored 30 goals. DD was a point a game player in the AHL. For the five seasons prior to playing with DD, Cole averaged less than 20 goals a season. With DD he had a career high 35 goals. Cole scored more goals playing along side DD than playing alongside Staal despite Staal and Cole have several seasons of chemistry. Clearly, Desharnais has some talent. He deserves a chance to make the adjustments to demonstrate that talent.

There are a lot of players who scored at a point a game or more on the AHL and never could make it in the NHL. Corey Locke for one, who was also Canadian junior player of the year.

Yes, Patches said he was the best centre that he had ever played with, but Patches experience at the time and even now is limited.

I like DD, he works hard, but if we are being honest, he is not a top line centre. Rob Brown scored tons of points when he had Lemieux and his points dropped significantly when he played with other players. He was more a very good AHL player than an NHL player. Cole was on the first year of his new contract and had a career year and basically overachieved based on his age. Normally players his age level put or decline. Patches was highly motivated to come back last season.

This season, they benefitted from a fresh start with new managament and coaches. The players wanted to prove that last year was not indicative of how good they are. The problem was, the Habs ended up with an easy schedule to start the season and coupled with that motivation, they had a great start, with the exception of the first game. Now, the competition is tougher and that motivation has lessened.

If DD couldn’t adjust during the easy games, how will he do when they play the true contenders?

  58. Habfan17 says:

DD is a good centre on a mediocre team. He would probably be a 3rd line centre on a good to very good team. No one wants to trade Plekanec, Galchenyuk will be the number 1 centre and Eller is a much more rounded centre and wins more faecoffs than DD. That would keep Eller as the 3rd line centre. Then there is Bournival, Nattinen and Pribyl, who is coming on of late that are all bigger and better on faceoffs than DD. Either move him to the wing with bigger linemates to buy him more time and space, or trade him while he has value. If his “slump” lasts all year, they will get nothing for him. I do like the kid, but this is a business and the Habs need an upgrade.

I am kind of suprised that people haven’t been calling to have Paul Mara’s body exhumed so we can get a head start on fighting when we are down 4-0.

Hopefully we get back to hockey tonight and stop the notion that a hulking defenceman who drops them and/or Ogie Oglethorpe is going to scare another team into not winning faceoffs, completing short passes in their zone and being stronger on the forecheck.

    Mr Boone,

I don’t believe the organization “gives Québecois players every opportunity to succeed.” If that were true, it would be impossible to have team unity with the presence of such favoritism. I do believe the French media holds back on their criticism for a “gars de chez nous”. I believe DD has been allowed to stick with Cole and Max because they did put up excellent numbers last year (thus earning the right to play out of their slump). That right has now been fairly revoked by MT and we will see if he responds.

  61. otisfxu says:

Sorry, I never understood the love affair with DD, or is it DeeDee,,,,,Quebecois or no Quebecois, we waste too much time with these average players. Let’s face it, 10 years from now, we are not going to be talking about Desharnais as one of best Habs ever.

Just like Darche, time will come to say nice talk’n to ya. And MB, do it sooner than later………(unless of course he gets a hat trick tonight…….)

  62. Say Ash says:

    Who’s Lecavalier gonna fight tonight?

  63. Ian Cobb says:

I wrote this early today, but it kind of fits with the subject of Therrien tinkering with the lines.

2013 training camp to end tonight.

The run to the playoffs starts this evening. Our training camp ended last Saturday night against the Leafs. It has taken up to now for the players and coaches to get to know each other and implement the new Bergevin_ Therrien rebuilding philosophy.

For the months of Oct. Nov. & Dec. the coaches and Bergevin got in many nights watching all talent and the coaching in Hamilton, in order to know who was ready to bring to Montreal once this short season got under way.

Now that we have had 1 month of playing NHL hockey, or as I refer to it, 1 month of training camp. It is now up to the coaches to put this team into the sprint to the playoffs. Every point in the standings is critical to earn every night, if we are to make an appearance in the first round.

So as this team prepares itself for the future, through the draft and development of its own talent, which will take many years. They must still put a half decent product on the ice in order they don’t get booed out of town.
It is all about the coaches for the rest of the year now. The coaches have to put players together that will give each player and the club an opportunity to be successful every shift. They must find ways to motivate and prepare game plans to defeat various styles of opposition clubs each night. Therrien can only tinker so much before Bergevin has to help him out with some fresh meat! but from where? The trade deadline is fast approaching for those not pulling their weight.

It has been a revolving door on the coaching staff office over the last to many years. We are about to witness how this new Therrien era, is going to bring this proud franchise back to respectability and competing for the Cup and most importantly, the paying customer, that has been far to patient over the years.

Dear Mr Boone, with all due respect.

    When you state:

“It’s been suggested, by more than a few members of the Commentariat, that DD would have been watching games from the pressbox if his name were Dennis Drummond.”

you are right, but you, who has no problems editorializing, really might also want to state that the opinion is borderline lunatic.

A young player who scored 60 points the previous year wouldn’t get benched 10 games into the new season just because he’s slumping, especially when he’s obviously still working, and when his linemates are also slumping.

Desharnais wouldn’t be benched at this point if his name was Drummond and he wouldn’t be benched if he played for New Jersey or Detroit. Just like Erik Cole isn’t getting benched in spite of his lack of a French surname.

Desharnais is playing for the same reason that Cole and Gionta (same number of points) are playing through their poor start. And it has nothing to do with language.

    Please.

    • Loonie says:

Erik Cole demoted to the fourth line in consecutive games. Is a more accomplished player than Desharnais and scored more points last season.

      Next.

      • HabFanSince72 says:

You seem to believe that the coach’s decisions are only based on punishing or rewarding players.

They probably have more to do with trying to win games.

For example benching Desharnais as you keep asking would imply starting Ryan White in his place. That would not make the team better.

        • The Jackal says:

          Again, exactly. Thanks HFS72!

        • Habfan17 says:

Not necessarily, Therrien could decide to dress an extra defenceman or call someone up.

          Habfan17

        • Loonie says:

No that isn’t my belief. But if you’re trailing by a large margin in a game demoting Erik Cole to the fourth line isn’t exactly putting your best offensive foot forward if you’re trying to come back. From the same place, keeping a player in Desharnais who has struggled mightily offensively in a top six role at that same time, in a tight checking game has no rhyme or reason behind it.

If it’s about wins and losses, the guys generating the most scoring chances should probably be on the ice more than guys who in scoring situations haven’t been able to so much as create chances to score.

But I just hate Desharnais and love Eller like everyone else around here who disagrees with Desharnais’ rope and Eller’s basement dwelling.

Edit: And if last season’s results are the reason why Desharnais coasts by unscathed, why is it again that Tomas Kaberle is in the pressbox? 22 points in 43 games if I remember correctly.

But let’s not talk about that, it runs contrary to the logic that Desharnais’ 2011-2012 campaign should absolve him of his terrible play thus far.

      • Gerry H says:

Yeah, but that’s not the pressbox.

It’s well known that Max and DD have a long history of success together, predating last year’s breakout season. Moreover, Therrien has been said to think in terms of pairs, not full lines. With Max having missed a few games, that pair was given a little extra time to get rolling. Didn’t happen, so the axe falls, as it did for Cole.

I’m with HF72. DD’s surname is an over-hyped factor. The guy has earned everything he’s received from the Habs.

      • The Jackal says:

What does that mean? That only suggests that MT was trying to get Cole going some way. That doesn’t mean DD is not subject to the same standards of accountability.
I guess if Ryan White was Jacques Blanc then he could get away with dumb penalties, right? Wrong.
Why was Gallagher called up but not Dumont?
Why is St.Denis with the Dogs when he played quite solidly last season? We don’t have any French names on the NHL roster on D.
Just a terrible premise for that argument. DD does not get special treatment, they just hope DD regains his form and are giving the chances to do so, there is nothing wrong with that.

        • Habfan17 says:

Actually we do, his name is Francois Boullion!

          Habfan17

        • jedimyrmidon says:

Actually, the ‘problem’ with DD is that he absolutely cannot play in a checking/grinder role. He’s not the most defensively responsible forward either. It means that he can’t be demoted like Cole and so, in a sense, he does get special treatment. DD is a player that can’t be demoted otherwise the Habs run the risk of getting killed whenever he’s on the ice.

Eller is stuck on the 4th line because he and DD can’t be switched even if DD is performing poorly.

    • Habfan17 says:

Sitting a player is not always a benching. Coaches use this as a tool sometimes to help the player get a new prospective from watching the game and to do some self evaluation as to what he needs to do to get out of the funk. It is a big difference form being in the dog house like White

      Habfan17

    • The Jackal says:

      Exactly. Thank you!

    • He’s not old, but he’s not terribly young — he’s 26. And while he’s a relatively good player, a lot of guys would have managed 60 points playing between Pacioretty and Cole last year. Quite a few would have managed more.

At any rate, I don’t think people are generally calling for him to be benched — rather, they’ve been calling for reduced time/responsibilities for at least a few games, to see if someone else can step up.

Mike Boone: “With Gainey at my side, I’d walk into any dark alley in the world.”

      • Habfan17 says:

  65. RS says:

I have a lot of respect for DD. Clearly he has oodles of talent and has constantly worked hard and fought for his chances in a hockey world that will always doubt the little guy.

That said, I doubt the little guy! The problem with the Habs isn’t that DD was given the #1 centre spot. The problem with the Habs is that DD WAS their best centre last year and they still haven’t found somebody better.

When the Habs finally become a good hockey team, hopefully within the next 2-3 years, DD will almost certainly not be on the team. I hope he will be on anther NHL team, but I suspect he will be ripping up the AHL or enjoying life in Europe.

  66. HabinBurlington says:

Kind of have to wonder how much PED’s are being used in the NHL. I suspect it isn’t a great deal different than the rest of the pro sports and rampant.

  67. ed lopaz says:

bullet answers to Hobie why Desharnais will not be traded for a stay at home defenceman (presumably one who would weigh 220+ lbs and enjoy fighting)

    1) DD put up 60 points last year,

    2) it was his 1st full season in the NHL

    3) he is only 26 years old

    4) Max has said DD is the best center he has ever played with

    5) at 5’7 and only 1 NHL season under his belt, there is very little market for DD in a trade

    6) he is a very hard worker, and he’s been an over achiever all his life, which means he is likely to work his way back out of this slump

    7) he is a very popular player here in Quebec, and one of the few on the roster who can speak French

    8) stay at home defencemen are not that hard to sign in the off season as free agents

    9) trading for a #5 or #6 d-man would send Bouillon to the press box, and Bouillon is a Therrien favorite, a popular Quebec player, and he also speaks French

  68. Loonie says:

    Mr. Boone,

With respect, Eller was benched and then demoted to the fourth line in the two games immediately following his being scratched. He began to play well when they kept him on his starting line for an entire game.

Not immediately following Therribell scratching him.

  69. Loonie says:

Players around the league who over the last three years have benefited tremendously from their linemates and produced an abnormal 60 point or more season……

Chris Kunitz, Radim Vrbata, Blake Wheeler, Joffrey Lupul, Clarke MaCarthur, Ryan Clowe, Jamie Langenbrunner, Dustin Penner, Chris Stewart and Antoine Vermette.

This isn’t meant to be an indictment of David Desharnais but an explanation that players do have career seasons at times and believe it or not, teams figure out what made those players successful and adjust how they play against them.

The players who sustain longevity in terms of offensive production either have an elite skill set(Desharnais does not) or they adapt their game from season to season because they understand that teams are going to eliminate what they did previously to make them successful.

In Desharnais’ case, he was afforded a tremendous amount of time and space last season while Pacioretty and Cole scored at will from areas that players don’t typically score from, like just inside the blueline. This season it’s become obvious that opposing teams are focused on denying Desharnais time when he has the puck. He doesn’t have the speed to get away from tight checking and his only adjustment is to do a better job of finding open areas on the ice and moving the puck quicker when he does get possession. If he fails to make those adjustments he’ll continue to produce offense at a mediocre pace.

Some people laugh off the suggestion that Pacioretty and Cole make things easier on Desharnais. Simply put they do. Big forwards with excellent speed and range definitely make life easier for a centreman. A pass that Desharnais sends a couple of feet out of range for a guy like Gionta winds up on the stick of a guy like Pacioretty. A pass into traffic to a guy like Gallagher winds up in a change of possession when the same to Cole often ends up a scoring chance due to Cole’s ability to fight off checkers with his big frame.

I think Desharnais can recapture what he had last season, but it won’t happen if the adjustments aren’t made.

Well hopefully grandpa gives him the keys to the car soon, because grandpa;s eyesight are not to good and he is going to crash and burn.

I’m not so sure that’s the case. From what I read in the Denver Post, the Avalanche have a history of “mistreating” their players during negotiations. O’Reilly isn’t asking for the moon. Apparently though, things got a little too heated and now the bridges are burnt.

Change of scenery could be perfect for this kid.

Maybe, but I still disagree with the Roy assessment.

Someone stated he was looking for 5 years @ 5mil/per… That’s pretty steep I’d say.

Very good answer STORMIN. Therrien will become a man when he figures out a way to use PK’s fantastic qualities.

It has nothing to do with BEING french. It has to do with SPEAKING french. If you haven’t tried it, its not so bad.

  134. Habilis says:

True, but someone also stated that PK wanted Doughty money, which was just as ridiculous.

I tend toward believing that the Avs lowballed him though. The current management regime has a history of doing it to others.
