Liveblog: Canadiens break Leaf jinx

162806165_slide

HUGE win.
Your Montreal Canadiens scored three unanswered goals in the thirds period to break open a 2-2 game and finally rack up a W against Toronto.
Rookie Brendan Gallagher’s sixth of the season was the winner.
Red-hot Max Pacioretty’s second goal made it 4-2 and Brian Gionta stripped Phil Kessel to cinch it with an empty-netter.
The Canadiens outshot the home team 40-23.

David Desharnais had two assists for the Canadiens, who played a dominant and disciplined game, taking only one minor penalty.

The Canadiens have at least a point in nine straight games and sit atop the Eastern Conference.

It was their first win in Ontario this season.

if ryder can get it going, we may have four dangerous lines. well three really but the fourth line has a role and right now is playing it really well

Can you remember when Canadiens management put their motto up in their dressing room at the Forum?

I coach minor peewee Canadiens here and would like to add a banner to our dressing room for our playoffs (starts tomorrow night), but want some history behind it so I can explain why? I know the poem (we infantrymen have it burnt into our minds, hearing it so much unfortunately, ref to our fallen and not November 11th).

Was someone in Management in one of the world wars? Or did someone just think it was a nice piece that made sense?

I read about 1915 and the first Canadiens cup, but who made the decision, and why?

Boy I used to really think TSN was a pretty good neutral station to watch a hockey game – not tonight it wasn’t. I’m not sure if they mentioned the 6-0 blow out in MTL 2 weeks ago about 500 times to slight the Habs or because they were really that amazed… you know… cause blow outs just never happen.

They can argue about the Brown major all they want, but I thought that was a good call. A goon chasing a guy down for a puck he has no chance at getting is bound to end up ugly, I think it was the right call. As for the faceoff that Bozak botched, DD seemed to be ready, what was he doing waving his stick around and gesturing with his hands? The puck wasn’t dropped again, too bad because maybe it should have but why would he just give up on a play like that. I didn’t see TSN give much thought to the bogus penalty shot call or the missed trip on DD when he was face-to-face with Scrivens, causing him to miss the gap in the net by half a foot. The Leafs had no business staying even with the Habs after the first two periods in this one.

  5. Laramy87 says:

Not particularly important, but boy is TSN biased crazy.

I watched the highlights tonight on TSN.ca and you know how sometimes when they show goals then also replay the play-by-play calling the goal. Well for both Toronto’s goals tonight they did that and didn’t for any of the 5 Habs goals. I found that kinda funny.

I have a friend who works at TSN and he is a die-hard leaf fan/hab hater. So i bet the entire newsroom/highlighter creators are like that too.

    • Trisomy 21 says:

If you watch the Sports Centre Harlem shake video on youtube you’ll notice a couple of Habs sweaters. So I don’t think it’s as bad as you might think, although I know where you’re coming from, I think Pang and Cuthbert are real homers.

Speaking of the Harlem shake, I can’t believe that’s the new goal song for the Leafs. What a joke, I’d be embarrassed. You might as well have the Leafs skate onto the ice to Gangnam Style.

      Ope… Ope Ope Ope….

    • jedimyrmidon says:

Yeah, it’s pretty annoying. Their favourite clip is Scrivens making a good save on Gallagher, but putting himself completely out of position.

He was extremely lucky that the puck didn’t end up in the back of the net when Gally put it right back in front of the net.= to Pacs who had his stick tied up.

  6. FunkyCrabChairNF says:

Telling stat: Habs have highest goal differential in the conference at +15 (tied with second place Pitt.). Leading the east is not an accident.

Great game and great effort again tonight. Like the game in Ottawa, our Habs out shot, out worked, and out played the opposition in their own building.

Kaberle looked decent tonight too for a guy who hasn’t played in a month …the pp missed Diaz but kaberle moved thepuck well all night. He can shoot thepuck too when he decides too…might be worth giving hima look on Markovs right on the pp and having Markov play the side he prefers…or have Markov be the triggerman and Kaberle on the left…either way…both are great passers and underated shooters

    • HabFanSince72 says:

Good thing we didn’t trade him for a Zamboni then.

As perceptive H I/Oers said every time it was suggested – why trade him? Keep him in case Diaz or Marky get hurt.

The team is playing Great. MT and and the rest of the coaching staff is doing an excellent job.

    Well that was delightful.

Man, I’m hoarse from ‘quiet yelling’ at my tv so as not to wake my kid. Those refs were brutal. Why is it that hard-fought games, full of good checking, fast play and good flow get effed up by the zebras, while games with cro-magnons charging like gurkhas at opposing players gets the ‘let’s just let ‘em play’ treatment?!

I freakin’ LOVED our pressure in their zone. Endless forecheck. They couldn’t get the puck out with a bazooka. We just kept pinching and skidding it back in.

    Great great game. Big win.

Carlyle is a one trick pony. He benefits from slack officiating and weak powerplays.

Prust got 17 minutes and he along wioth Gallagher absolutely owned the boards….ithe ogre Leafs played the body…they just spun off their sad attempts and maintained possession or made a play. The Leafs don’t even put a stick on a stick or acknowledge the puck …they hold their hands up like little kids and even when they connect on the hit they do not get possession…

    • HaBo says:

Re Prust’s board work: I was thinking that too. He’s been getting
better and better at that every week. He’s just a beast lately!
Not only does he keep possession but he’s consistently creating plays from it.
Seriously, if he can keep this up he might turn himself into a bonafide 2nd line player. I’m totally impressed. What a stud signing. Now only if we had Talbot also!

Gally is one smart little player to be able to not only survive along

That hit on Gorges could have been disasterous…I know I am biased, and I know that McDonaugh is concussed, but the hit on Gorges tonight seemed WAY more dangerous than the one Pacioretty dished out, mainly because of the speed that they were going at. That’s what they gotta do, that’s how they win. They can’t allow themselves to get suckered into a goon-fest. Games are won on the scoreboard, not on the hit column or through fighting majors. Carey is a goalie who seems to need more shots but Dryden sure wasn’t. In fact his biggest strength was standing around watching the game for 25 minutes and coming up with a huge save. I remember in the 70′s he’d sometimes have less than 10 shots in a game and still be sharp when needed. As an old goalie that still amazes me!

  52. Cal says:

Bozak’s Blunder was hilarious! Gallagher didn’t quit on the play like the laffs clown center.

MaxPac and DD doing the job. Kaberle +1 and 14:55.
    13-4-3. Nicely!!

I say absolutely not. He’s done nothing since signing that contract. Doesn’t hit, doesn’t win battles, total disappointment. Weakest link.

That’s how I see it too. He just doesn’t use his size in a tough enough way to make a difference. Seems to be lacking intensity all the time.

    • lavie says:

I’d say to keep Moen until his retirement. Moen is an efficient 3rd or 4th line player who has above average skills and a good line mate. His 06-07 Cup goal makes him still a valuable player.

Talking to my brother on the phone who is in Port Alberni BC on Vancouver Island during the second period & both of us had the game on but he was telling me The Habs second goal & a couple of other plays/hits about 3 or 4 seconds before it happened and I am in Oakville.Ont and watching the game on a delay compared to someone in BC who gets the play sooner than I – A little bit strange since I am in Ontario……

Subotai: No. It would only lead me back here another day. In even worse company.

I was watching TSN and couldn’t help noticing that some comments about plays got posted really quickly. I was marvelling at the typing speed actually.

    • Ace says:

Depends on how you watch it. Cable, Satellite, Antena, Streaming are all different delays. When I’m watching on Antenna talking to my buddy in Vegas who’s watching on cable, I’ll sometimes see it 30 seconds before him.

  56. The Jackal says:

    To those Price detractors.
Scrivens ended the game with a .875 save %, Price with a .91 save % – so let’s stop conjuring these silly statements about Price not making a difference for us. He shut it down in the third and kept the team in the game until they exploded for 3 goals. Big team win.

  57. donmarco says:

A thought to go to sleep with – Habs are 10 points up on 9th. And 2nd overall in the NHL. For all the angst they cause us, tonight is a good night to be a Habs fan.

  58. HabFanSince72 says:

Leafs are now in 7th and Philly, Tampa, the Isles and Rangers could all catch them. They are actually a very poor team albeit with good goaltending, and they will be out of the playoffs again this year.

And here’s why Randy Carlyle is a fool:

    Player: Time On Ice:
    Colton Orr 14:55
    JvR 15:06
    Kessel 15:40

    • jedimyrmidon says:

Not convinced the Leafs have ‘good’ goaltending with so many rebounds.

I’d say their defensive system is improved over last season.

And yeah, Colton Orr playing almost as much as Kessel and JVR would have had much more impact on the game than that blown faceoff.

    • Muckbringer says:

There was a point where i was crying out for blood tonight. Good thing im not coaching, tonight was the perfect example of how every hockey team at any level should play the game.

the hosts on TSN1050 Toronto (I think former player Jeff O’Neil was on there) were just ripping Carlyle for playing Orr that much. I don’t think hes played that much since junior.

  59. Muckbringer says:

Who stops playing after they loose a draw to complain, and then you and the coach scream at the refs after?
They played dirty all night but les glorieux stayed wayward true. Everyone played and no one drifted.Tsn staff were eating crow and seeing the light midway through the second.
    5-1(first leaf goal was interferance)
    Nah,nah nah nah…..suck it!

big win for the boys tonight!
glad they were able to pull through after some tough luck bounces. The score very easily could have been 7 – 2 had they been able to bury some of this grade A scoring chances in the second.

Gallagher was a target all night. man that kid plays as if he’s 6’3″. reminds me of a young Brian Gionta or Marty St. Louis.

The fact that we’ve got a point in all but 4 games this year is truly incredible.

  61. habsfan0 says:

Habs record vs Northeast now 3-4-2.

They’ll even it up against Boston with Michael Ryder playing a major role.

  62. D Man says:

I’m in Texas tonight and listened to the game on XM radio. Toronto announcers. Jaysus! They’re really, really bad. More than just homers, really, really bad. Great game boys, my glass is overflowing. Literally and figuratively.

Love the way this team competes. If only Molson had fired the dunderheads about 3 years ago. Energy and hard work and it starts at the bench. But….put Galchenyuk back at centre and get rid of Moen. I’d rather have White (omg) on the ice. Moen is a zero.
No idea who would vacate centre-ice, but Chucky is a natural center.

  71. Adidess says:

Desharnais back to playing really well again. Skating smoothly, passing well in tight space, in control with the puck. All of a sudden, he doesn’t look so small anymore. Crafty little guy!

  75. slapshot777 says:

How much whining do the TSN announcers do. They couldn’t get over the faceoff draw. They wouldn’t know as if they were the only team that this ever happened too. Then they were harping about the five minute major Brown took.

It was the right call, you could see Brown push him into the boards. Darren Pang, was useless as a goalie and continues as an announcer. Even when they were trying to give the Habs the praise, anyone notice how they were so bent on talking about he Leafs, that they would insert the Leafs in where it should have been Habs.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
