Liveblog: Canadiens edge Devils for fifth in a row, move back into first

PKNJ

The Canadiens got a third-period goal from Tomas Plekanec, redirecting a point shot by rookie Jarred Tinordi, and then held the for a 2-1 win.

It was their fifth win in a row, matching the team’s season high.

The Canadiens have 19 wins in 28 games. They are 10-2-2 on the road.
New Jersey had 18 shots in the third period, but Carey Price was spectacular.
In winning his 15th game, Price made 32 saves.
The win lifted the Canadiens past Pittsburgh and Boston into first place in the Eastern Conference.
The lofty status won’t last: the Bruins and Penguins play Sunday afternoon.

Tinordi played 14:48, picked up his first NHL point and ended the game plus-2.

Colby Armstrong’s first goal of the season gave the Canadiens an early lead – the 21st time they’ve scored first in 28 games.

But Peter Harrold’s first, on a second-period power play, tied the game.

I don’t see brunet’s comparison of tinordi to gill other then comparable size. Tinordi is already a better skater, has a better shot ,more physial and has a mean streak. I also hope people don’t expect too much out of him too soon, the big guy still has alot of filling out to do. Does anybody here remeber chara when he first came into the league,he looked like bambi on ice.

If you recall, the ‘Ruins were in 1st place after last Saturday’s matinee…They weren’t by 9:45 PM that night. So it doesn’t take long to move from 1st to 4th! And vice versa.

    Cannonading drive!!

Not a bad pts total for a 4th place team. We’ll keep pace tonight with another valiant effort. NJD without Parise and Brodeur are still a pain, but we’re the better team. Let’s neutralise Kovalchuk and Henrique and she’ll be right. Go Habs Go!

There is simply no end to the places people here will reach looking reasons that Boston has some league-granted advantage.

It’s the decisions handed down by the league in the recent past that make me wonder what’s up. And also some of the calls/ non calls during games that make me ask WTF!
It’s got to the point where I ask myself ” would that have been called against Boston?” Or, Boston gets away with that all the time.
        ….Hab4life….

        • ffenliv says:

The league can’t win. 2 (or 3?) of the back-to-backs were Saturday/Sunday games, which people were loving here, because it was a weekend full of hockey.

    • Danno says:

All I know is the NHL gave the Bruins a favourable schedule with only five back-to-back games compared to the Habs having nine.

  23. Hobie Hansen says:

Jared Tinordi is right behind Alex Galchenyuk in terms of his importance to this team. Tinordi was drafted because any team that challenges for the Stanley Cup needs a big and nasty, top notch defenseman who can play 25 mins a night.

Big piece of the puzzle plays his 1st game tonight. The heavyweight we’ve needed on the blue line since Sheldon Souray left many years ago.

    • savethepuck says:

Hoping he has a good game, but as long as I don’t yell ffs when he’s on the ice, I’ll consider it a job well done. Just hoping he’s steady out there.

Agreed. Plus we gave up a 1st and 2nd round pick to Phoenix to get their 1st and 4th or 5th i think (their 1st was 5 spots higher, to land us Tinordi) Shows how much Timmins liked this guy. and we all know that’s a good sign.
Be patient guys, he will probably make some mistakes tonight and will not be on the scoresheet. But perhaps he can stick around for a few games and maybe we can recall him if we need him in the playoffs. Its important that he gets top pair minutes in Hamilton and takes the time to develop his game nicely!

      • savethepuck says:

Strange thing is I think the 2nd round pick was a pick we got from the Leafs in the Grabovski deal. The other part of that deal was the draft rights to Patteryn.

And the Sens just won in OT, DAMMIT!

    • jols101 says:

Why anti – Sens? The only teams I enjoy watching lose are the Laffs and the Bruins cause, well, they are the Laffs and the Bruins. But i would much rather see the Sens make the playoffs then the Rangers or Flyers…

The Sens are the biggest threat to the Habs and to make the playoffs. I think in the grand scheme of things a Sens loss is better for us?

Maybe you are right. I just don’t see the Sens catching us in the standings but I do see them being caught by a team that I would rather not see make the playoffs like the Flyers or Rangers. I like the Habs chances against the Sens more then those 2 teams.

In CIS hockey at the University Cup the Saint Mary’s University Huskies are playing the University of Waterloo Warriors in a round-robin game. At the second intermission SMU leads by a score of 2-1. The tie-breaking formula in use at this tournament means that a 2-1 SMU victory would eliminate both SMU and Waterloo and allow the University of Alberta to advance to tomorrow’s final. A win by either team by any other score would eliminate both Alberta and today’s loser, and see the winner of today’s game advance to the final. Late in the 3rd period, if the score remains 2-1 SMU will pull its goaltender to improve its chances of scoring the third goal that would put them through to the final. In the dying seconds of the game if the Huskies find themselves too far from Waterloo’s net to have any realistic chance of scoring a third goal their only chance to win their pool and move on to the final might be to score a goal into their own net which would tie the game forcing indefinite, sudden death overtime. This strategy would cost SMU a certain win in today’s game, but create its only opportunity to win the tournament. The chances are, like, one-in-a-million, but I’m sayin’ there’s a chance.

It was a lockout year and he had a chance to finish his school at a college age and go for a national Championship, TRY an chill the haters on social media or we can lose this entry level contract replacement for Michael Ryder.

As for Darren Dietz no chance he re-enters draft as some have speculated, i have seen him play on many occasions, and throughout my travels through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Boston, North Dakota, and all of Western Canada i do not think I have been more impressed with a junior prospect than I am of Darren Dietz…

PS the one that got away from Lac st Louis Lions Mike Matheson having a tremendous freshman rookie year at Boston College, poor kid will have to play in Panthers organization,, unless who knows

Also Calgary Flames have some talent coming from a couple of Matheson’s teammates at Boston College Johnny Hockey Gaudreau who is so damn good but so damn small, and Bill Arnold, Flames have two good young BC prospects.

  37. commandant says:

I see some talk of the Gare Joyce article on Gauthier.

Here is what I truly believe on Gauthier.

He made some good moves, some bad. In fact in pure hockey terms I think we can see more good than bad. Bourque for Cammalleri now looks like a good deal, as you consider the added size and the cap savings in the deal (and that Bourque was outproducing Cammy before the injury). We see the fruits of the Eller trade now. Diaz and Emelin were great pickups. The signing of Cole was a good move. Markov is still our 2nd best D. Etc…

But What Gauthier did, where he failed, is he created a toxic work environment around this hockey club. An environment of lies and deception, of hiding injuries, trading players mid-game, not speaking to the media, firing assistant coaches an hour before the game, firing a head coach and replacing him with another assistant and then telling the media his hiring of Cunneyworth was a mistake, etc… etc…. He had zero idea of how to MANAGE a team.

It was such an unhealthy environment that it brought the team down with it.

Bergevin’s best move this year was operating the team in a new and fresh way. One with openness with the media. A culture of accountability for the players, and bringing in Therrien who is operating a meritocracy and not keeping a guy like Gomez arround when he’s not helping the team. The moves for character guys like Prust and Armstrong and Boullion help too.

All in all, it is the culture change that has helped this team the most. Gauthier created a poisoned, toxic atmosphere around the club. The new management has instilled a fresh and winning attitude.

That joke was a sex-related joke, not a gay joke, in my opinion. It’s kinda edgy and that makes it funny, but I don’t know how one finds it offensive to homosexuals.

If the guy is gay or bisexual, the dilemma is different or completely absent. To be offended, one has to assume the guy is strictly heterosexual, which the joke doesn’t say. Can we just laugh a little at times and not dig deep for the alternate meaning of an innocuous joke?

It’s true that one can’t decide whether people should be offended (it’s how they feel), but Ian does not deserve any scorn here.

I’m thinking there will be some tension tonight on here, if we lose. Both Pittsburgh and Boston have moved in front of us before the puck is even dropped for our game.

A win would move us back into 1st place, but at this point this team has proved us enough to get the benefit of the doubt, even with a loss.

But excited about Tinordi, a win would be perfect!

  56. frontenac1 says:

Amigos! Frontenac Jr. Goes down to Mtl.yesterday for some Irish Partying with his Concordia buddies @Hurley”s and other saloons and no call yet from the Gendarmes! Guess its time for another Whiskey to celebrate! Saludos!

  57. HabinBurlington says:

I actually am looking forward to seeing how the 4th line plays. Blunden brings a great deal of energy and pretty good speed to that line. I would expect that line to have quite a bit of energy.

Moen while he has been responsible defensively seems off his game this year. While he shouldn’t perhaps get promoted, maybe this helps jumpstart him.

    • Phil C says:

Yes, I look forward as well. 4th line should be fine, but Plek’s line takes a bit of a hit offensively.

    • savethepuck says:

I thought maybe Chucky would be with Plex and Gio, and Moen may slot in with Eller and Dumont, but I am OK with this. It’s far from a guarantee the lines MT starts with are the lines he finishes with. Players will have to earn their ice time from the first puck drop.

  58. HabinBurlington says:

Respectfully Ian, that joke was posted earlier in the week by someone and I believe it was removed. You may want to consider doing so, it can be offensive to some, Cheers bud.

    Enjoy the game tonight.

  60. Le Jadester says:

    Habs, OLE !

  61. The Jackal says:

That’s a pretty funny joke Ian, but the best joke I’ve heard here is from frontenac1… something about locking your wife and dog in the trunk, then letting them out hours later and see which one is happy to see you!

That being said, I would take my chances, maybe I am not his type!

  62. Timo says:

moen-pleks-gionta… kinda reminds you of good ol’ days, doesn’t it?

  63. Prairienewf says:

This ispst definitely the team Gainey, Gauthier, and Timmons built. But the new mgmt, new direction, new attitude and last and maybe most importantly new system is the reason for the success. The old regime as Pierre Maguire said was “toxic”.

  64. wildwilly says:

Reading the article from Gare Joyce making a case that Gauthier was the architect of the Canadiens, all I can say is… What a crock of s***. He doesn’t deserve any praise for not making every possible mistake. He made more than his share and he is gone. Good riddance! Thank goodness we have a GM and management team that is able to get the best out of what was left behind.

    • 2mins4lookinsooogood says:

Sorry, but the fact the Mr. Gauthier was a bizarre freak with a hint of Montgomery Burns does not take away from the clear successes that occurred on his watch and under his direct order.

Gare didn’t even mention Diaz and making the Eller trade showed that Gautier had some serious balls o steel.

      • 2mins4lookinsooogood says:

Very true … Like every but Commandant, I had zero knowledge of Eller when he was drafted but my first thought was, that either Mr. Gauthier was Willard Kurtz or this was a flat out genius pick.

Some kind soul in the HIO community quickly put together a highlight package and then I knew that I was looking at a potential Hall of Famer in the “all round category”

“Don’t crush that dwarf Alex Henry, hand me the pliers”

      • Habitant in Surrey says:

        …agree

      • wildwilly says:

It’s just the points that were made in the article… I attribute the drafting of Gallagher, Subban, Pacioretty, and Galchenyuk to Timmins, not Gauthier. Yes, the Eller trade has worked out. The Gomez trade is partly his fault. The Kaberle trade was his fault. In short, he was very much a mixed bag. I don’t think anyone misses him.

  65. Habfan10912 says:

This years version of the Rangers is an example of the sum of the individual parts not equaling the sum of the whole. This team on paper should not be struggling for a playoff spot.

  66. Mr.Habs71sv says:

Will the author of the article please stop with the “thinly veiled” anti-Yankee/American comments. It is offensive to American Hab fans.

I obviously missed whatever in the article was, as you say anti American.

    • jols101 says:

I re-read the article and still can’t find any ant-American comments. However, any nation that has the Republican Party as one of its national parties surly must expect a little ridicule from time to time.

      • cthabfan says:

am just sick and tired of all the anti-american comments -I love Canada, and lived there for 7 years and have been a habs fan since I was 5 years old growing up in Ste. Agathe. Am 64 now and have lived in the states since age 11,and served during the vietnam war,and I did join, wasn’t drafted.
Let me tell you the difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. The Republican Party will teach you how to fish, and the Democratic Party will give you a fish, because they want you to be depended on them for hand outs.
Also, if Canada was a war with any country, the USA would be the first country to help. And remember my friend, if it wasn’t for the USA, we would all be speaking German or Japanese now, so please stop with all these anti-american comments. This is a sports site!!

        • jedimyrmidon says:

          What anti-American comments?

        • HabinBurlington says:

Ideally this site should never broach Politics/Religion etc….

However, by and large I think most posters here are very respectful to each other.

        • Gerry H says:

Excuse me, pal. Are you seriously trying to lecture Canadians about WWII? The war my uncle died in before you guys decided it might require your attention?

Take it home and keep it there. You’re talking out your backside.

          • Habfan10912 says:

As an American may I just add that if not for our great and brave neighbors to our North my country would not be what it is today. We are blessed to have you as our friends
@zep. The comment holds true for you as well.

          • Gerry H says:

HF10912, I appreciate the sentiment and, I hope it goes without saying, back at you. I spend a lot of time in the U.S. and have a huge amount of admiration for the people and the system of government.

I’m a bit of a history nerd, however, and like many Canadians take a great deal of pride in what Canada, including my grandfather, father and uncle, did in the two world wars. I also have a huge amount of respect for the deeds and suffering of the Brits, Kiwis, Poles, Free French and others in the early years of the war and especially for the Russians from ’41 on. And, of course, the contribution of the U.S. was massive.

Trust me, my impatience with those who would oversimplify America’s contribution, such as the poster above, does not extend to all Americans.

          • cthabfan says:

Excuse me?? Again, you fail to realize without the USA getting involved in WWII,the war would have been lost.
The USA is always the first country to help others with aid or any assistance they need,so please stop.Like I said before, I love Canada, but hate it when people put down the USA.
I spend 4 years in the Air Force during Vietnam,so unless you were also in the military, don’t talk to me about war!!!
We are all habs fans here, can’t we just talk about hockey?

          • Gerry H says:

Unbelievable. The guy who opens the thread with a lecture on US partisan politics and a warped take on world history wants us to just talk hockey.

Excellent idea. Glad you thought of it, because I have neither the energy nor the inclination to correct everything John Wayne taught you about WWII.

        • ZepFan2 says:

“And remember my friend, if it wasn’t for the USA, we would all be speaking German or Japanese now”

Yeah because Canada had NO hand in that war.

Tinordi skates extremely well, for a guy any size. IMHO, his biggest problem is strength, not speed, unlike the Bill’s of the world would have you believe. 117. Adidess says:

He’s playing incredible, indeed. I remember he was great in that 2010 (?) playoff run, when he joined after Markov went down,. Not identical to Gomez i am not stupid but very similar situation as of now..The only reason he still around the team at practice is to keep him in shape in case of a possible trade, he is not allowed to use any sharp objects and the team has assigned a driver for him to get him home and too the arena

  121. Bill says:

You mean the “Bills” of the world, but I am really complimented by your reference anyway. Anyway, I think my main concern about Tinordi wasn’t HIS speed, but the speed of the NHL game, which I said would be too much for him … on this night, I was completely wrong!
