Liveblog: Canadiens lose shootout in Carolina

RBC Center 007
PRE-GAME AUDIO: Kirk Muller | Jaro Spacek

The Canadiens got a point they don’t need.
Peter Budaj and Cam Ward were brilliant for 65 minutes in the Futility Classic, then Eric Staal scored the only goal of the shootout for a 2-1 win.

Elsewhere, Buffalo lost and dropped out of the playoff race.

And the Leafs won in OT.

Eller: Save

Skinner: Save

DD: Save

Jokinen: Just wide!

Cole: Post!

Staal: GOAL!

…if Canadiens’ Management is so dumb to allow Minnesota, Islanders or the Weeds to get by Us for one of the only 2 or 3 almost NHL ready Draft picks I am going to have a very ugly CONNIPTION FIT :( …FFS, doesn’t anyOne in the upstair’s offices have a clue ???

So I missed half of the game (at work), but followed the comments… Seems like I’m missing the game of the year.

Did the artist of the Hurricanes logo never look back and say, “Gee, this is what a toilet looks like when it’s flushing.”?

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  5. novahab says:

A question for Boone. I was told the refs in this league, especially the Canadians one are intimidated by the US press. They fear for their rating. losing playoff pay and keeping their jobs. Here is the prove I offer.

Boone would you or anyone one at the Montreal Gazette write a piece like the Boston papers did about Patched when he got hurt? If it has been the other way around.

The Canadian press does not write negative stories about the refs. The American city paper do.

  6. Kimberly2u says:

Stamlkos just scored….but not on us

    Blunden is snakebit.

    Great save by Campoli!!

what a weak penalty, how does the forechecker (dywer) go down so easily … weak…

  10. Prairienewf says:

Subban auditioning for RAW with that hip toss. A little 80-ish but impressive nonetheless.

  11. jols101 says:

If Budaj doesnt get with The Tank, I say trade him right f%*kin now…LOL

  12. Prairienewf says:

Boone your right. We don’t need this little last minute renaissance from our habs. “Return of the Living Dead” has got us this far and this close to a possible legit star, maybe even superstar. So make like Toronto and……leaf? Well you get the idea.

  13. Mattyleg says:

    Soooo here’s somethin':

Both coaches that posters on here were touting as the next best thing to artificial bacon flavour, i.e. Muller and Boucher, are out of the playoffs.
    Overhyped?
    Unlucky?

  15. Peter Young says:

It’d be nice to see Cole get his 60 points. Perhaps against the Leafs if not tonight.

  16. Mattyleg says:

Alright, let’s go boys, pot 2 or 3 in the 3rd!

  17. habs001 says:

all is well in habsland..as a poster stated earlier today a healthy markov and gion back next year we win the east…hey he may not have much talent evaluation knowledge but at least he is optimistic…

    • saskhabfan says:

another poster once said maxpac wouldn’t be a goal scorer..the poster may not know his head from his ass but we do know crap comes from both ends.

St Denis plays pretty tall for a small D. He impresses the heck out of me.

    • naweed235 says:

ya I agree. I don’t mind having him around next year as a 6-7th

    • jmsheehy19 says:

I’ve liked him every time I see him. Without bringing in any UFAs, we have Kaberle, Diaz, Weber (all three of which play a similar game) and St Denis for the bottom pair.

I’ll be shocked if at least of that group isn’t moved in the off season.

  20. HabinBurlington says:

The Toronto / Tampa game appears to be being played with a similar effort level as the Habs game…. This whole league is fulling engulfed in The Tank!

  21. alfieturcotte says:

Anyone have a link to tonight’s game, I live in NYC?

  22. Ice Storm says:

Nice effort at the end there by Le Noir, Blanc et Rouge…

    ;)

  23. danhabsfan says:

Hard to say… but is what we need
    Go Canes Go
    Go leafs Go

  24. alwayssunny says:

All this talk about “tank” reminds me of great former Hab Andrei Kovalenko, and how we were able to pry him away from Colorado. Ahhh good memories.

  25. danhabsfan says:

    See….Pleks understands Tank

  26. alwayssunny says:

Thought sure we had a goal when I saw it was Plekanec on the breakaway

  27. JIMVINNY says:

I don’t know if anyone else agrees, but I’d be fine with St Denis being the sixth dman next year.

    • Clay says:

Yes…we NEED to win and jeopardize out high draft choice, because we already have enough talent

I bet Timmons and one of our top scouts, Mr. Jacques Martin, will have a surprise for us anyway.

        • Clay says:

I can see that you ‘don’t worry about that stuff’. But that ‘stuff’ is what will make us a contender again in the future – if smart people worry about it.

What we do has no bearing on anything, so we might as well cheer for the team.

  30. jols101 says:

Nice…pains my heart to cheer against my boys but we need to lose this one so I can cheer for us to destroy the Leafs on Saturday night without any fear of the Leafs getting the better pick…

  31. Ice Storm says:

Ok.. it’s official… we need a new coach..!!! What is Cunneyworth doing?!?!
    Pull Budaj already!!!
    It’s simple math really… 6 > 5

I was just about to say that that was the cheapest too-many-men call we’ve had all season.
    And we’ve had a lot.

  35. HardHabits says:

For a few seasons now I have conditioned myself to be prepared for a Tanked season.

However once they made it into the Draft Lottery I decided to prepare myself for the worse case scenario… that being an 18th to 23rd place finish.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

    Go Tanks Go!!!

    • HabinBurlington says:

I am guessing when the Y2K scare came through you had a water distillery in your basement along with enough dry goods to get you through the whole next year. Just kiddin’ HH :)

  36. Mattyleg says:

Great to see Geoffrion get a goal after being bounced around and having to tolerate the blowhards in the press-box… ;)

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  37. jols101 says:

AHHH CRAP…they really are going to blow this opportunity at a Lottery pick with a meaningless 3 game winning streak to end the year. BRUTAL…

  38. disgustedhabsfan says:

    Tanks for nothing.

  39. danhabsfan says:

We need the draft pick, I don’t care about a moral victory at this point.

Gee am I ever Glad Kaberlazy is back!
The PP chemistry sucks tonight so we should be able to squeeze out a loss.

  50. habsfanforever7631 says:

    I don’t get this.
Why is Bourque still on the PP, and why doesn’t Subban play with Markov on the PP?

  51. HabFab says:

Great stat I stole from HFboards: 25 out of 55 picks Timmins has made from 2003-2009 have reached the NHL. Once the dust settles, I hope Trever is still around.

  55. alwayssunny says:

Winnipeg came back to tie it phew that one had me nervous

  56. HardHabits says:

I think the RDS crew reads HIO. Either that or they read Boone… who reads HIO.

  57. HabinBurlington says:

1-1 for Toronto after 1st period with Tampa :)

  58. alwayssunny says:

I wonder who would win the tiebreaker between us and Minnesota we can still catch them too. Scoreboard watching is so exciting at this time of year.

  63. danhabsfan says:

Last road game of the year. Play the heck out of the kids and should have started the back-up… lets see what they can all do.

  64. alwayssunny says:

Turning it on out there, we can do this guys. That Blunden, he sure has some hands.

  65. punkster says:

Eller with Blunden and Geoffrion reminds me of Pleks with “whoever”.

    ***Subbang Baby!!!***

    • HabinBurlington says:

Is that a good thing? ;-)

    • Sean Bonjovi says:

Eller’s a one-man-line. He’s a waste of good wingers because he isn’t smart enough to exploit their skills, but he can turn a pair of wingers like Blunden and Geoffrion into a pretty good 3rd line.

“Patch the holes, ride it out, Play for 2015″
      – Sean Bonjovi

      • punkster says:

This is a phenomenal undervaluation of a good centre brilliantly done.

        ***Subbang Baby!!!***

        • Sean Bonjovi says:

I place great value on Eller’s skills. He’ll be one of the best 3rd line centres in the league for a long time, and he’ll get the most out of some really cheap wingers, but he’s a puck chaser, and he makes stupid passes, so there’s no point putting him on a line with highly skilled hockey players.

“Patch the holes, ride it out, Play for 2015″
          – Sean Bonjovi

          • punkster says:

22 years old. Kind of harsh to relegate him to a future 3rd line status so early isn’t it? Might want to give the kid a few years don’t you think?

            ***Subbang Baby!!!***

          • Sean Bonjovi says:

If he could ever learn when to pass, and when to shoot, and when to just dump it in the corner I think he’d be the best player on the team. What I can’t understand about him, is how a good defensive player who always knows where to be and what man to take in his own zone can be the same guy who skates the puck into double coverage and makes blind-back-passes to open points in the offensive end.

“Patch the holes, ride it out, Play for 2015″
            – Sean Bonjovi

      • Strummer says:

I remenber Eller had a good run with Ak and Moen.
        How quickly they forget.

        ______________________________________________________
“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

      • danhabsfan says:

Eller is not the problem on this team… but he can be part of the solution

  66. Josh says:

They probably don’t even know who Kaberle is.

    • Strummer says:

His brother was there when they won the Cup.
So the name isn’t totally unfamiliar.

  67. danhabsfan says:

I heard someone suggest JM for GM… what were they smoking????

  68. Kimberly2u says:

Boone got a man crush on Budaj…said he’s hot. Lol

  69. danhabsfan says:

Is Emilin out because he’s banged up, or to make room for Kaberle?
I hope it wasn’t to make room for Kaberle… wish he wasn’t a Hab.

  70. Habbu says:

    Kirk for GM

  71. alwayssunny says:

Not really impressed with our start but a lot of times I don’t really see what’s going on. I think we are playing lousy but then Coach Cunneyworth says we played great.

  72. alwayssunny says:

Welcome back Tomas Kaberle. We need to get used to seeing you because one thing is for certain, you won’t be going anywhere. Try to lay off the cheeseburgers this summer.

  73. temekuhabs says:

    I can’t bear to watch Kaberle anymore..yeeesh!

My addition to the learning French thread, below.

I spent my elementary school years and the first two years of high school in Montreal. We started French in grade three. I moved to Ontario at the age of 15 — into grade 11. They started French in grade 9 back then. Guess what? They were ahead of me.
