The Canadiens got a point they don’t need.
Peter Budaj and Cam Ward were brilliant for 65 minutes in the Futility Classic, then Eric Staal scored the only goal of the shootout for a 2-1 win.
Elsewhere, Buffalo lost and dropped out of the playoff race.
And the Leafs won in OT.
Eller: Save
Skinner: Save
DD: Save
Jokinen: Just wide!
Cole: Post!
Staal: GOAL!
• In case you missed it in the morning’s links: Stu Hackel’s brilliant takedown of that schmuck Mike Milbury

Deal the pick for Getzlaf if he’d ink a long-term deal? 27 years old, 6-4, 225-pounder; might be available coming off a down year. Already with a 90-point season under his belt, that would pretty much be the top end of what you’d hope for from the pick. Getzlaf-Cole-Pacioretty would be awfully tough to play against.
Oufff… tough luck for P.A. Parenteau… His knee seems busted real good. Gotta feel bad for the guy… 1 game away from being a UFA that would probably bring him in some good cash and now his career might be on the line!
RDS.ca has a video in case you are interested
In case it hasn’t been said yet, we cannot finish lower than 3rd (you know what I mean). We can no longer catch the Isles, WIld or Dicks.
It’s between us and the Edmonton Tankmeisters for the second spot.
If we finish 3rd last here are our odds of picking in different spots:
#1 … 14%
#2 … 0%
#3 … 67%
#4 … 19%

If you believe the draft rankings it means we will not pick Grigorenko. However Edmonton might take a d-man, in which case Grigs would be available.

That’s just wrong, lol! What’s wrong with this world I live in dam -it!
Sad day indeed. I’ll assume you meant “Ducks”. I wish there was a turn of phrase that described what can happen when you assume something. We can still catch the Leafs though, and that is all that matters.
Can’t catch the Leafs.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Ah bummer. Looks like I’m going to have to put up with Buds fans gloating all summer. Oh well. After years of turning my back on baseball I have decided to bury the hatchet and do what was unimaginable to me decades ago. OK… BLUEJAYS…LETS..PLAY..BALL.
I am sorry Habsolutely it is not allowing me to answer you directly so I have to respond to my own post. You seem like a nice man. I’d even be willing to wager that you are a handsome man. It really is the Christian thing to do and thanks for pointing that out. God bless you man.
Don’t think your math is right. there is a 29.7% chance we drop to 4th pick (24th,25th,26th or 27th draws the lottery ball) and we still have a chance at 2nd if Edmonton beats Anaheim tonight, the Canucks Saturday night, and we lose to the Leafs.

Now Tremblay is criticizing the hiring of Randy Cunnyworth by pointing to the much better hiring practices of other GMs … like Rejean Houle.
Yes folks.
He said it.

Most people will remember Gino from tonight’s antichambre.
But the most egregious moment is Mario Tremblay’s extended tirade on the importance for a coach to treat their players well.
Yes, he said it. You have to be careful and not show your players you don’t like them. Be careful not to offend them.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Yes he displayed that ability in spades, most famously with Donald Brashear.
The name ‘ Roy ‘ comes to my mind …

I’m back it was a short walk. Thanks for commenting on my posts Habsolutely , it means a lot to me. Happy Easter man, god rest our souls.
Well, he would know.
Mario’s full of blarney. Must be the Irish side of his family.

Tremblay is a fing hyprocrite
How typically unHabs-like. Not waiting until the last game of the season to lock up the draft lottery position.
WTF? Doesn’t Gino own a suit? He even makes PJ Stock look like a sharp tool in the shed. I am almost as embarrassed as the rest of the AC crew.
Gino just said that he wants Michel Therrien to be the next coach of the Canadiens. Julien Brisebois, GM/DG.
Richard R
I like it. Michel “Mom” Therien. “Our defense is so soft so soft it makes me puke.”

Ok. I need to stop stressing over “Le Tanque” and the draft. Wherever we pick, I think we need to pick the guy with the best name, or nick name.
Isn’t one of the top guys first name “Nail” ? I mean what else do you need to know? It’s almost as good as “LaFlamme” in Goon ™.
My personal fantasy hockey player name is “Cadavre” – would that be great on a jersey or what?
What do you guys think is the ultimate hockey player name? (Allowing that “Barry Melrose” is already taken.
Never saw him play but I like Hakan Loob.
Okay Saturday we win! I mean win! Good night all, happy tanking, oh that just sounds weird……
IT will be our ONE SHINING MOMENT.
You haven’t finished loading that gun, have you Gerry?
Have a good one!
Well, Boofalo is out of the Playoffs. That’s good news.
I just wanted to confirm before the Lottery actually occurs that if we win it then everyone wants Yakupov right?
That would be my vote, if I had one.
Supposed to be best player available by a mile … so yeah.
Full Breezer 4 Life
if we win the lotto I want E. Stall
When you have a guy that has stayed the consensus #1 for the entire year, yeah, he’s the guy we want for sure. Most drafts the #1 in September usually doesn’t stay #1 til the next summer.

The next guy that thinks Gino’s talking like a slow tard should tell him to his face, lol!
Nobody on the AC crew dares but they’re all thinking it.
When Gino was on the Nucks I’ll never forget the time he SNAPS and chased the entire Oilers team around the rink…they looked quite concerned.T’was an awesome display of NOW i’M EFF’en pizzed, lol. I even thought Glen Anderson was gonna cry…
This tanking is just bizarre. Tonight I had to cheer for Leafs to win, and now Edmonton vs Ducks.
As for the GM “Francophone” debate, I’m trying to regain my sense of humor. I remember some wag, back when Jean Chretien and John Crosby were both trying to become Prime Minister, quip that neither of them spoke either official language.
I can’t wait to put the official nail in the coffin of this saison d’enfer.
The Leafs let down their fans again tonight.
Being a Leaf fan is like dating an annoying chick that lives in your apartment block. Its kinda convenient yet you know from teh start that it will be a disaster yet you stick with it. ITs hard to feel sorry for someone who voluntarily puts themselves in that position.
Question if we were to tie Anaheim with the same point wouldn’t they still be ahead of us cause they beat us so thats the tie-breaker right??
They have more ROW wins and more wins altogether.
Yes, they would. Number of regulation + overtime wins. Shootout win don’t count.
umm never mind…. what they said ^^^
Stop getting points damnit!
This guy really is a tool……

It’s really weird to watch your team play and hope for a loss. I have been doing it over the last few games and it’s not the easiest thing.
At the same time, anyone who still feels too bummed out after losses at this point may be a little bit too idealistic/sentimental. A win at this point doesn’t mean squat and wouldn’t/shouldn’t make anyone feel better about the season.
I actually want a meaningless win on Sat bc it’s against TO and won’t change the standings one bit
Good chance that if the habs beat leafs on sat the leafs finish 4th worse..and have a chance at getting the habs 3rd pick…
If the leafs finish 4th last and win the lotto they would get the first pick (formally the Jackets) and we would then get the 4th pick(if we finished 3rd last).
This scenario has what, like a 5% chance of occurring?
Can you imagine both teams obviously trying to lose? Wouldn’t that look good on Mr. Gary?
Leafs can try and lose if they want. But our Habs better try and win. I have $20 bucks a game riding on the season series and I really don’t want to have to hand over 40 bucks to this leafs fan…lol
It only just struck me that I wont get to watch this final game since I will be out of town. aw well guess I’ll just PVR it for Tuesday.
Why is Gino speaking like a ‘tard on AC ? Like his jaws are wired or smth…..

Classless comment.
Gino Odjick might be low lustre, but he is clearly not a ” ‘tard ” as you put it. Integrity and substance resonate with what comes out of his mouth – you on the other hand, not so much …

Hold on the pantaloons ! I’m not discussing his integrity or substance or the unbearable lightness of his whatever.
Never heard him speak before (yes that can happen) I’m just noticing he speaks funny, is all.

Odjick is an aboriginal Canadian and former NHLer who was loved by his teammates for doing a dirty job – well. Since retiring from pro hockey, he works with disadvantaged kids and, quite obviously, invests little energy in trying to impress people.
You referring to him as a ” ‘tard ” is a lame attempt to grab a couple of laughs at his expense. It’s something that adolescents do; IMO, it’s classless coming from adults. Only a moron would not have gotten ” the point “.
You might want to consider thinking before talking next time. On your way …

Okay, it was nice the Habs didn’t blow everything by getting two points but they still have to be held to account for a truly disappointing season.
I think the Canadiens should have to grow non-playoff beards as a show of penance — akin to a hair shirt — and not get to shave them off until they DO make the playoffs.

… I must say, they’re sharp-dressed men
So that pretty well locks us in at 28th overall unless we lose to the Leafs Saturday and Edmonton beats Anaheim tonight and Vancouver Saturday. We have a 14.2% chance of picking first and a slight chance of dropping to 4th if 24th,25th,26th or 27th draw the lottery ball. Hope whoever we get is worth this dreadful season. I’ll be tuned into TSN Tues night with my fingers and toes crossed.

Anaheim has the tie breaker with Montreal. Montreal can only finish 29th or 28th, and will pick in the top-4.
The Tank lost its GPS. Luckily for us, Randy asked for the way. So we can still beat the Weeds senseless like a brain-damaged test monkey on crack AND at least add a Grig or a Galch to the roster.
I knew Capt Kirk never really left us. Always coming through in time of need

The ducks can lose both their games and we can beat TO and still not pass the ducks. They have the tie breaker.
So the Habs are guaranteed at least the third best odds.
If Edmonton wins tonight, that could go as high as second on saturday.
But if they lose, that’s where the odds will play out.

The only time I’ll be content with this is on monday after the lottery selection. We’ll know where we stand.
Still, it’s bitter sweet. I’ve never seen the team finish this bad….ever.
And when you think about it, at times, they played some very impressive hockey. It’s still depressing.
…Yup, the silver-lining for Me is We wound-up far below the potential of Our Team

Doin’ the tank shuffle
yup with two games left in the season, I think i was dangerously close to helping load the gun in the tank!
That’s what I was thinkin’!
I’m just glad we didn’t have to resort to Plan B: plant a flu bug in the Canadiens’ dressing room tomorrow morning.
Well if that’ll get me in there, I’ll gladly oblige!
Islanders win, Toronto gets at least a point, so we’re confirmed for last place in the East. An anxious evening! But, apart from his rather dubious puck-handling, I was impressed by Budaj. Habs need to give him more games next season.
I’m still angry about that breakaway save with seconds left, but yeah – I would love to see him do that in a meaningful game.
