Liveblog: Canadiens bounce back from bad second period, beat ‘Canes 4-2

CelebrateinCarolina

At the halfway mark of their schedule, your Montreal Canadiens are STILL in first place in the Eastern Conference.

After playing their worst second period of the season – out shot 21-5, a 2-0 lead erased by Carolina – the Canadiens dialed up a splendid third.
Goals by Lars Eller and P.K. Subban put the Hurricanes away.
Carey Price made 42 saves – a season high.
Brandon Prust had a goal and two assists – the first three-point game of his career.
Lars Eller also had a goal and two assists.
The Canadiens have not lost consecutive games in regulation time this season.

Josh Gorges, who NEVER scores, had a goal and an assist.

Alexei Emelin assisted on the Prust goal that opened the scoring and dished out EIGHT hits.

The Canadiens PK went 4-for-4.

And one of the league’s hotest lines – Eric Staal, Jiri Tlusty and Alexander Semin – were held without a point.

As far as the standings go. you can’t be worried about that. Gotta think about winning every game. It is so tight from 1st to 8th teams are gonna be moving up and down for the next 24 games and who knows where they will finish.

3 or 4 bad games there’s a lot of good teams in the bottom 7 start playing good someone could get knocked out of the top 8 and believe it or not. It could be the Habs. Gotta keep winning or their season could come to an end in a hurry.

The 15th place team is 5-points out of a playoff spot. no room for error. Because we’re in 1st place doesn’t mean we’re a great team. How fast that can change. Good 1st 24 games. We don’t know what’s in store for the next 24.

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

      All good points.
Plus, the weirdness of the late start, short training camp, some guys in Europe and others not, etc etc means that form is skewed and very hard to discern (except for the Black Hawks and Columbus). I reckon there will be plenty of surprising shifts in the second half of the season (just hopefully not for the Habs…)

Sigh, I hate being stuck working late on game day.

  4. habsnyc says:

Price is one of 11 active NHL goalies age 31 or younger with at least 200 career starts and 100 wins. This would seem to be his peer group. He ranks 9th in save percentage and 7th in GAA among the 11. The peer group ranked by save percentage is: Lundqvist, Rinne, Miller, Anderson, Ward, Quick, Howard, Hiller, Price, Bryzgalov and Fleury. This group has four Cups, two Conn Smythes and two Vezinas.

I think the argument could be made that Price might be better than Anderson, Ward, Howard and Hiller or at least I would like to believe it. Price may be the best of the three Canadiens on the list, but the US is dominating the position.

    • Gerry H says:

Yeah, but good goalies tend to have their best years during their late twenties/early thirties. That group is heavily biased toward that end of the spectrum, with, I think, only Rinne and perhaps Quick in Price’s age group.

      • habsnyc says:

There are 11 active goalies who between age 21 and 26 played 200 or more games during 2000-2012. These are the young starting goalies of the current era. Of the 11, Price ranks 5th in GAA and 6th in save percentage. He is average for the peer group no matter how you slice it. This is comparing goalies at the same age. Price at his age vs. Lunqvist or Quick at the same age.

Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.

        • Gerry H says:

I see. I thought those were current stats for those goalies. Not a bad peer group, frankly.

          • habsnyc says:

You have it right, I ran it two ways. Your suggestion of comparing them at same age was a good idea.

Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.

    • MrNax says:

A lot of those goalies have real defensemen playing in front of them… Not a small bunch of soft as butter D (last year’s D was a joke). Stats can be misleading…

      • habsnyc says:

stats are less misleading than opinions. who are the great defensemen in buffalo, carolina. phoenix or ottawa? i am not making any conclusions, just presenting data.

Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.

    • Gerry H says:

Actually, I take that back. ALL of those guys are at least two years older than Price and the vast majority are 30-32.

      • habsnyc says:

see my comment above, i can sort the stats any way you want, Rinne, Quick, Lundqvist are always better than Price. Luongo and Halak were also better than Price at the same age. Now, I think Price is better than Halak.

Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.

        • Gerry H says:

Yes, I see that now. But what you’re essentially saying is that Price is among the top handful of goalies in the current era, which is precisely the way I’d characterize him as well.

          • habsnyc says:

totally agree. he is not the best but would be really hard to replace, plus he is young and durable.

Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.

    hi fellas
been a long time since i have been here. quite a season! one thing im a little bit concerned about in the league is these crazy plays to hurt guys. I dont see why the league isnt taking this more seriously.
Its almost a liability issue now. Who wants son or daughter to see that lights out punching? it will keep the game alive for some fight fans but will cost hockey its long term fan base. Another quick note wouldnt playing budaj now be the better move? let
carey look at someone else wanting the spot? Just throwing that out there. Go Habs! ice to see folks from other cities showing up again on this board.

Things must be pretty sweet. Glancing along the page I only see one debate, not bad coming off a bad loss. But yeah, a case is a 24. 12 are a box, and 8, 16, or 6 are a pack. Or an aperitif depending who you hang with.

  7. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Yeah, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe if somehow 9 teams in the East and 7 in the Wet made the playoffs and they crossed over. That probably doesn’t make sense either. Lol

  8. If you were forced to pick the lesser of two Weevils tonight, which would it be: Leafs or Bruins?

  9. Loonie says:

    On realignment,

Good for the Habs, ridiculous playoff format notwithstanding. Does this make the Florida Panthers a lock to some day soon become the Quebec Panthers?

    Me thinks yes.

    • habsfan0 says:

Don’t think that name will pass the smell test at OQLF.

    • jmsheehy19 says:

      Agreed. And Phoenix to Seattle.

I still wish they’d go to a pure points seeding. The winners of each division get the automatic top 4 seeds, and the remaining 12 are whoever has the most points from any division/conference/trade federation.

Be fun if any two team could play for the Cup.

      • Loonie says:

Hard to incorporate that kind of system and avoid having teams in the West play teams in the East as early as the first round though. I may be wrong but I believe that’s why they don’t do it.

        • jmsheehy19 says:

I’ve heard that they’d be worried about the travel, and I get that. But at the same time, it’s not like these guys are going by bus. 3 hours in a cushy jet is not quite the horror they make it out to be.

          • Loonie says:

Fair enough but if Montreal for example was a #1 seed and drew Los Angeles in the first round you could easily make the argument that Montreal’s being punished even though they won their conference.

          • jmsheehy19 says:

Very true. But I believe that possibility would be rather equal throughout the seedings. And this would fix the 7teams vs 8 teams division problem.

  10. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

How is the DDC brew pub in Montreal??? Do they have all their beers available? Can you purchase beers in a case or do you have to go to a store or to the actual brewery?

Is DDC readily available in Montreal, or is it only in select stores?

So the NE division with Detroit and the two Florida teams are in our new conference.

    • Loonie says:

Any word on the playoff format Frank? I really hope they don’t go with the proposed idea.

      What a mess.

      • HabFab says:

Apparently lock, stock and barrel. However, it maybe reviewed after the season is over in 2014.

        • Habfan10912 says:

I haven’t complained about anything all day but I don’t like the idea of the a Western Conference team having a better chance of a playoff spot then the Eastern Conference team. Not fair. Boooooooo.
          CHeers Frank.

          • Loonie says:

I agree. Just awful. But we shouldn’t have expected a logical playoff format realignment considering the people running the show.

          • Lafleurguy says:

Besides the inherent unfairness to the numerically larger conference, it also means a statistically unfair shot at earning playoff revenues which could be crippling to the small market teams in the East who miss out, and I’m thinking about New Jersey and soon to be Brooklyn Islanders. Their new arena seats fewer than the Jets’ venue (around 14,500) although that would be more than enough for their crowds this year.

“May you live in interesting times.”

          • Loonie says:

A good portion of the media has been saying and it is logical that the move will generate more revenue for the less financially healthy franchises.

  21. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Defensive coverage has been brutal in front of Price. But as much as they have to do their job, Price has to do his. It’s been suggested on this site that Price doesn’t steal a lot of games. If the defence is off then he’s off. Is that a fair assessment?

    • Arrow77 says:

It is and it isn’t. It’s true that he has yet to steal a game this season but the defense has been so good on most night, he never really was in a position to steal any.

Besides, he plays a lot of games and the schedule is hard. It’s more important for him to be constant than to “steal” games.

  22. youngwun says:

Here’s to a good game . Hope the boys play well and stick there gameplan and not the Cannes.

  23. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

There’s a reason Price has 11 wins this year. He’s been solid. But he’s list his way a bit. Is it wrong to suggest that?

    • piper says:

I’m as big a Price supporter as there is and I agree he’s been bad lately along the the defence. His reflexes seem a bit slow but i’m sure he’ll bounce back. Not so sure about the defence though.

  24. Ian Cobb says:

The whole team has not performed defensively the past few games as they were.. Not anyone player, the team. That’s what a team sport is, they will be fine, just a bump on the road.

  25. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

The last 2 games he HAS been out of position. Hopefully he figures that out soon. :)

  26. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Okay, so he’s changed since he didn’t sign autographs. That’s good.

  28. HABSsince92 says:

  30. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

“Cheating by overplaying shooters?” No cheating by NOT squaring up to the guy with the puck. The rest is up to the defender. His reflexes aren’t good enough for that. Very rarely does he make a reflex save. I’ve watched a lot of Habs games and THAT is a FACT. The autograph comment was to point out that he’s a hockey player, not your friend. Think about it.

    • Loonie says:

Your assumption that I have personal admiration for him aside from what he does on the ice is your way of defending your ridiculous analysis of him.

I agree that he doesn’t make many saves based on reflexes if by that you mean that he doesn’t make saves when caught out of position. But I would hope that you could acknowledge that it’s incredibly rare that he’s out of position.

In any event. My goal wasn’t to deter to you from sharing your opinion of Price. But it certainly seemed like you were attempting to protect your opinion by getting personal with anyone who disagreed with you with your uniform statement of Price protection.

Some friendly advise. The “if you don’t agree with me you are ____________” doesn’t help much.

  31. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Referring to me as a troll because I’m new here and not part of the clique is quite hilarious. Anyway, moving on….

    • Loonie says:

Give it up. You prefaced your opinion by saying that people who disagreed were somehow coming to Carey Price’s aid. Far cry between that and seeing his play for what it is based on the evidence at hand.

      “he doesn’t sign autographs”
      “he’s cheating by overplaying shooters”

Both false and one’s a personal attack. Both without merit and deserved a terse response.

    • alfieturcotte says:

Smiths – don’t get caught up in Loonie’s nonsense. State your opinion(s) as you’ve done. Problem with Loonie, is that if he doesn’t agree with your opinion (especially when it comes to Price), he reverts to being a petulent child.

      • Loonie says:

Oh yeah you’ve got me figured out.

So again regarding your opinion yesterday that Price isn’t good in the playoffs.

.934 save percentage last time he was in the playoffs.

Funny thing about you is that anytime somebody says that Price is as elite as the media and majority of people in hockey make him out to be you come out of the wood work with nonsense. Doesn’t surprise me that you’re taking up for somebody who relates autograph signings to on ice play.

        • alfieturcotte says:

          Lol, I knew I’d reel you in…..

If you feel isolating 7 playoff games and discounting the other 20 is the right way to analyze is playoff performance, you are spot on. I choose to look at the full record – 26 games; .907%.

Hey, I hope he proves me wrong. I’ll be more than glad to hop on the loonie bandwagon…..

          • Loonie says:

His career numbers suggest you’re right. But in fairness, I’m going with his most recent playoff series. The one most applicable to where he is today as a goalie.

Hopefully he shuts you critics up.

            ;)

  34. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

The fact that you keep calling my opinion wrong baffles me though. Whatever works.

  35. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Price has been caught “cheating” on several occasions. I’m not saying he’s to blame for the defensive break-downs, he’s not. I never said I disliked his play on most nights. Just because he’s too “cool” to sign autographs doesn’t mean he isn’t a decent goaltender. It seems you took my criticism personally so I defended myself. If Price was a relative or close friend of yours I wouldn’t blame you for getting personal, but I doubt he is. Again, I apologize for reacting the way I did.

    • Loonie says:

      He does sign autographs
He hasn’t been cheating on shooters as evidenced by him being late reacting to to quick plays that result in shots
I’m not offended by your posts, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re using a fabricated and fictional analysis of Price to put him down because you either don’t know or don’t care to know what you’re talking about.

      You’ve made that very clear.

    • Loonie says:

If Carey Price hadn’t been late reacting to every goal he’s let in the net over the last week your post would be fact. But you’ve been passing it off as fact when in fact it’s opinion.

The following was my first reply

“I have an idea. If we’re going to send messages to players who haven’t been carrying their weight then instead of benching Price who let in goals 99% of the professional goalies in the World couldn’t stop let’s dress Kaberle, Weber and Dumont, scratch Gorges and Bouillon and go with 5 defensemen for a night.

Gorges and Bouillon seem content to let players stand in front of their goalie and check them with one hand on their sticks.”

I wasn’t rude in that reply. Your “if you criticize my opinion you’re just defending the honour of Carey Price” crap incited my second reply which was to call your opinion what it was, incorrect.

    • Phil C says:

Just because Price is an amazing goalie does not mean he is immune from criticism. Based on Price’s frustration at practice recently, even he would probably tell you he has not had his A-game in the last two starts. Every goalie goes through hot and cold patches, even Jesus Price.

      • Loonie says:

Fabrications of a ridiculous nature pertaining to players deserved to be called such.

Wanna say Price lacks confidence? I agree 100%. Wanna say that he needs to be more aggressive and physical in his crease? I’m with ya.

Tell me he’s underplaying shooters when the fact is that he’s overplaying them a bit and the recent struggles have been evidence of that and I’m going to weigh in. Not because I feel I’m always right but because people use this site as an avenue to crap on players without foundation consistently and it’s the same ones doing it over and over based on personal like or dislike, not because of an actual analysis of play.

Everybody sees things differently and that’s why I participate here, but passing off an uneducated analysis as fact is the weapon of choice for trolls.

        • Phil C says:

Getting other people’s opinions/insights is why I participate here as well. I never noticed how bad Cammalleri was defensively until you pointed it out, then I couldn’t stop noticing. ;-)

If someone is fabricating stuff for trolling purposes, then I agree it is frustrating, but best ignored.

Your defense of Price makes more sense to me now that you have clarified your position. I would offer that Price was caught too deep in his blue paint on at least one, if not both of Cooke’s goals.

          • Loonie says:

I completely agree Phil and I’m nothing if not fair. My favourite skater on this team is Lars Eller and he was an abysmal nightmare in this team’s first game and I was among the first to point it out at a time when most were coming to his defense.

I might be wrong, but I don’t let my personal feelings for a player enter into the conversation. It’s always about their play.

Is Chris Lee the ref tonight? Tim Peel one game then Chris Lee the next game?

  52. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

The last few games he’s been worried about the shooter AND the potential recipient of a cross crease pass, this allowing some soft goals from being out of position. Worry about the shooter. If the defence breaks down, then I won’t blame him. He makes a lot more money than I do so I don’t feel bad about criticizing. What I find funny is the people who feel the need to protect Price, a guy who won’t even sign an autograph.

    • HabinBurlington says:

It is my understanding he has a case of writers block right now.

    • Loonie says:

If he’s worrying about both it’s BECAUSE the defensemen have been bad in their coverages.

It’s not a knight in shining armour routine in defending Price, it’s stating facts pertaining to his game and the game of his teammates.

What’s funny is people having a guilty conscience when criticizing players and not having the least bit of a clue what they’re talking about.

Edit: And you’re actually dead wrong in your evaluation of Price adjusting to square up to the potential recipients of passes. If that were the case he would have been squared up to Moulson, Martin and Tavares prior to them getting their shots off.

      • Bripro says:

        What guilty conscience?
        Who are you referring to?
Sorry, I don’t see the humour.
Why do you always bash people Tom?

        • Loonie says:

When somebody comes out and says that anybody who doesn’t agree with their opinion regarding a player is just defending them it’s an alibi Brian. They’re putting up a wall protecting their opinion regardless of how little merit or fact is in the opinion itself.

If I were to say that Tomas Plekanec is slow it would be no less incorrect than saying Price is squaring up to players without the puck before they get it. It’s a BS opinion about a player coming from somebody looking to crap on him because he doesn’t have an understanding about what he’s looking at. And that’s half opinion, the other half is proof in the pudding.

Price is actually late adjusting to the shots on each of those goals, most likely because he doesn’t expect passes to travel 45 feet wide through his zone.

          • Bripro says:

Look. I don’t dispute your reasoning. Just your approach.
Just because I don’t agree with someone, which happens on occasion, I’ll present my counter-argument, but it doesn’t mean I have to get my underwear in a knot over it.
I get more upset at some (this is just a generalization) who go out of their way to treat posters like yahoos.
A little diplomacy goes a long way.

          • Loonie says:

Diplomacy was the first approach. This was a reply to a reply

I once met Matt Good after one of his shows.

I offered to shake his hand, but he politely declined, saying he can’t afford to get sick. Fair enough.

We chatted for a few minutes and then he asked if I wanted an autograph. I asked what the significance would be of his name written on a peice of scrap paper? He smiled and said he didn’t really know but everyone always wants one.

Funny how Julien calls the Leafs a legitimate contender, but neglects to call the Habs the same thing, even though Habs are in 1st place.

        • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

All jokes aside, I think he clarified the Leafs as contenders because they have not been for a long time. It is already accepted that the Habs are contenders given they outplayed Boston during the Bruins Cup run. Last year was an anomaly for the Habs.

  56. Praj12 says:

Seriously folks are blaming Price. Did any of you actually watch the game? The only goal that could be considered soft is the shot from the point that he did not even see. The best a goalie can do is to get into proper position, which he does exceptionally well and hope that the puck hits you. To blame Carey and then comapre him to Budaj just shows me that lack of hockey education in this site and from Hickey. The team stank in those two games. They did not stick to their game plan and it showed with all the running around.

    HABS fan since ’68

  57. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Sure, start Price, but his confidence seems shot right now. His reflexes seem slow. Slower than usual. (Lets be honest, he’s a positional goalie, and his reflexes aren’t near the top in the league) If he allows 2 goals quickly, then pull him. We can’t afford to lose games.

    • Loonie says:

I have an idea.

Gorges and Bouillon seem content to let players stand in front of their goalie and check them with one hand on their sticks.

  58. Kooch7800 says:

I wonder if Weber is being showcased? Or if Kabrele is being saved for a move

@Dziurzynski knock-out, was quite crazy. Not as crazy as that swiss kid breaking his neck going head first into the boards. Paralyzed for life. Very sad, but I wonder how close we are to this happening in the NHL. With the crap reffing going on, out of control game, I fear any time.

    • habfan53 says:

I am surprised it has’nt happened yet.
I don’t blame the refs I blame the players that are doing the hitting for their lack of respect for the fellow players

      • Mike Boone says:

He wasn’t paralyzed, but Rob DiMaio never played another game after Guillaume Latendresse crunched him into the boards. And Erik Cole was lucky on the Brooks Orpik hit that could have ended his career. They have to bring in the Brian Burke bearhug rule.

          • Lafleurguy says:

No, I misread. Ronny Keller. Sports Illustrated did an article about a freshman playing for the Boston University Terriers, Travis Roy. On his very first shift in an NCAA game, caught his skates in a rut, crashed, quadriplegic. About twenty years ago. For Keller, there was a report that it was T4. If it is in fact C4, it implies quadriplegia.

        • Lafleurguy says:

But the Islander game was just 3 days after the Penguins. There also is a psychological effect on the rest of the team to concentrate more on defensive play when Budaj’s in net.

“May you live in interesting times.”

          • Loonie says:

Your last point I’ll agree with but suggesting Price hasn’t been good is a little short sighted. Of the five goals he surrendered in the Islanders game he had a reasonable to chance to stop one.

In the Penguins game he should have stopped three maybe four.

The focus should be on improving the coverages and winning battles and that could potentially improve with Budaj in net, but Price is the team’s best player and you don’t scratch Sidney Crosby to make the Pens better as a team.
