Liveblog: Canadiens bounce back from bad second period, beat ‘Canes 4-2

CelebrateinCarolina

At the halfway mark of their schedule, your Montreal Canadiens are STILL in first place in the Eastern Conference.

After playing their worst second period of the season – out shot 21-5, a 2-0 lead erased by Carolina – the Canadiens dialed up a splendid third.
Goals by Lars Eller and P.K. Subban put the Hurricanes away.
Carey Price made 42 saves – a season high.
Brandon Prust had a goal and two assists – the first three-point game of his career.
Lars Eller also had a goal and two assists.
The Canadiens have not lost consecutive games in regulation time this season.

Josh Gorges, who NEVER scores, had a goal and an assist.

Alexei Emelin assisted on the Prust goal that opened the scoring and dished out EIGHT hits.

The Canadiens PK went 4-for-4.

And one of the league’s hotest lines – Eric Staal, Jiri Tlusty and Alexander Semin – were held without a point.

    Check it out:

The Habs are in first place in the east with 34 points in 24 games. That’s 11 points clear of 9th place Winnipeg.

The Hawks are in first place in the west with a ridiculous 45 points in 24 games. They are 11 points clear of the Habs and an astonishing 21 points clear of 9th place Dallas.

To put that into perspective, Chicago is on pace for 90 points. I know they probably won’t get there but 80-85 is obviously very achievable. The last time the NHL played a 48 game season, Detroit won the President’s Trophy with 70 points.

    That’s bananas.

  2. donmarco says:

I’m reading everywhere that the Habs are interested in Clowe. There’s some thing to like, but we’re talking about a UFA with no offensive output in a contract year. Does anyone think he’s worth anything more than a 3rd round pick?

  3. Boston Habs Fan says:

Good win….horrible second period. This was the game they needed price to steal them one and he did. He kept them in it and allowed them to get a big 2 points. I thought Paccioretty was MIA tonight…maybe it was just me. Take the 2points and head to FLA

@Commandant …Ben do You know anything about this big Swedish lug ?

    NESN; Darren Dreger:

“27 year old Carl Soderberg hoping to join Bruins after Swedish Elite playoffs. 6’3, 225 lbs. Property of Bruins. Led SEL in scoring.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Carl Soderberg is hoping to join Boston after the conclusion of his team’s playoff run.

The 27-year-old led the Swedish Elite League in scoring and is widely considered to be the No. 1 player in Sweden. The forward was originally a second-round pick of the St. Louis Blues back in 2004, and was traded to Boston for goaltender Hannu Toivonon in 2007. Soderberg is currently on the Bruins’ reserve roster, therefore he would not have to clear waivers in order to join the team.”

Pateryn sounds like a good call up but why not Tinordi, Beaulieu or Ellis? Has anyone been watching some Hamilton games and know the answer?

  13. Prairienewf says:

NHL diefinately doesn’t want team in Queeee beck but they didn’t want one in Winnipeg either. They gotta get eventually. Roy will be lifetime coach, GM, and President if he wants it.

  14. HAB - Have A Beer says:

For all the price knockers. He stopped 41 shots tonight. If it wasn’t for him in the 2nd period. we could have very easily loss.

Thanks to the great play of our “D” and 3rd line we salvaged 2-points

Sign of a pretty good team when your top-6 weren’t involved in the scoring. I’m not gonna call it a good game but we came away with 2-points. Good for some players.

  15. Prairienewf says:

… realignment tells Me there will be expansion before a moved franchise

…presently 2 less teams in the Western Conference than the Eastern

…that does not look good for Phoenix to move to Quebec

…it looks like 2 expansion cities in the west, first, as in Seattle and another (Kansas City or Las Vegas ?)

…the only hope for Quebec City is possibly a move of Florida to Quebec ?

…or is Detroit in the East only temporarily ?

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Not sure the NHL wants a team in Quebec. The owner in Winnipeg is loaded but the potential one here, Paledeau, is constantly asking for government handouts.

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

    • Bill says:

This is it, the only obvious expansion cities are southern Ontario and Quebec City. The realignment scheme looks weird. i cant see the NHL adding two franchises in the West, so looks like permanent imbalance.

Yep kaberle for a solid 11-12 minutes every game? Yeah I take that for sure.

  19. Mr_MacDougall says:

Love that Markov and Subban are both playing over 25 minutes per game. i wonder if they should play together.. Pronger/McInnis Neidermeyer/Rafalski

Another bigger d man that can at minutes and lighten load on Markov and save him and his one leg for end of season push and playoff grind.

  21. Prairienewf says:

Smart dog, if Eller becomes another Plakanec at his size WOOHOO for habs

    • SmartDog says:

I’ve always disagreed when people (including MANY Mtl sports commentators) said Eller doesn’t have hockey sense. Sometimes he makes incredible passes, uses pauses to shift the D before finding his man. But I didn’t expect him to come out as tough as he has. He’s picking up Plekanec’s way of being a pain in the ass. Pleks does that so well… it makes him a threat from any spot on the ice, to strip the puck, put you off your game, get you looking, and he’s always ready to take the puck and make things happen. Eller is looking a lot like that – strong shut-down skills with a readiness to make the jump and attack. And yeah, with that big body of his – awesome possibiliies. More than I expected to see. This may be Therrien’s best single bit of work to date – to help Eller find his best game.

27 minutes for PK. He’ll be doing that more often as he continues to mature. He’s sticking to the system, playing with the energy we’re used to seeing but with the extracurricular entertainment we used to see. Keeping it simple and starting to excel.

  24. SmartDog says:

    Some thoughts:
    - Eller is training to be Plekanec 2.0. The experiment is actually working… Plekanec with a bigger body… dangerous!
    - Plekanec needs Bourque back.. or someone else big with good puck control.
    - Gionta is not seeming very useful. Am I missing something?
    - I hope Weber is okay. The guy needs another game to get his timing back.
    - Price was awesome… we need more of that.
    - PK is starting to show up Markov. This is how it should be.
    - Ryder is a hot and cold player. I remember this. Hopefully Therrien can figure him out well enough to get the most out of him.
    - Emelin is not the quickest but his toughness is crucial.
    - Moen needs to be benched. Find some fight, find the net, find SOMETHING, or watch from the press box.
    - Prust is a REAL heart & soul guy. Maybe Moen is depressed seeing what that looks like.
    - Kaberle. Keep him off the ice. Just don’t play him. Please.
    - Nice to see us win a game without needing Patches to dominate.

  25. Old Bald Bird says:

A line from EOTP that surprised me.

“Speaking of Eller, he has 14 points on the year, 1 fewer than David Desharnais in spite of playing tougher minutes with lesser lights, and much less PP time. And people think this guy can’t be a top 6 forward?”

    • donmarco says:

If he can play through the entire season the way he’s played for the past 10 games, he gives MB a ton of options. He’d be a top 6 for sure. But he hasn’t played the whole season yet.

Ryder has to be more involved. Had 3 assists last game…TonyMarinaro’s right Dallas played a dif game and habs are a skating team. Ryder’s gotta put the extra time in , in practice, get his feet moving, skating. He too natural of a goal scorer not to start scoring in bunches eventually…..If he puts the work in.

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

        • Bill says:

Yeah, they brought him up to sit for sure. All this means is that Weber is out for at least a few games. Kaberle draws back in. I agree it would be more interesting to see Pateryn, but at the same time, I am not interested in watching him go through growing pains at the NHL level while the Habs are fighting for first in the East. Kaberle is more than competent and the Habs have a better chance of winning with him.

Now if they want to play Pateryn on the wing in place of Ryder, I am all for that. Bergevin is looking brutal trading Cole for that guy. Now every GM in the league will be thinking they can take MB to the cleaners.

Detroit playing Montreal and Toronto more often Detroit more often is great for renewing the rivalry, but honestly move Chicago over too don’t leave one original 6 out of it they now lose there Chicago Detroit rivalry

I really hope that after three years that this dumb system won’t work. Cause honestly what happens if Quebec gets a team?

…after being totally dominated by Stahl and the Hurricanes in the second I thought the Habs would have had to put Ex-lax in the ‘Canes energy bars between periods for any hope

Did anyone notice that after Webber messed up on the blueline that was it for him the rest of the night. Moen needs to go if he doesn’t get his **** together and please Armstrong the experiment I hope is over soon. Markov looks like he’s getting a little tired he needs help back there. Ryder looks like he’s playing American football out there and doing the old statue of Liberty play. He has no foot speed. Hopefully bourque and Diaz come back soon. And for Prust what can I say this guy is all heart and soul, sure wish we had 1 or 2 more guys like him on the team. Moen please watch Prust Armstrong the bench needs more water.

Conan: Almost 20 years of pitiless cumber! No rest, no sleep like other men. And yet the spring wind blows, Subotai. Have you ever felt such a wind?
Subotai: They blow where I live too. In the north of every man’s heart.
Conan: It’s never too late, Subotai.
Subotai: No. It would only lead me back here another day. In even worse company.
Conan: For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm.

To anyone saying Price didn’t make spectacular saves. Thats the thing. He’s so big, so fundamentally sound, and so good post to post…. he rarely has to make a spectacular save.

This was a fantastic performance tonight, especially the second period. Make no mistake about it.

Floppers like TimmyTime and The Hasek make ‘spectacular’ saves because they’re always way out of position.

      Much like Liverpool’s Bruce Grobbelaer.

Whatever works. Given their careers there’s a lot to be said for being “always way out of position” — low GAA and high save percentage. When you can accomplish both in ‘spectacular’ fashion it makes for very entertaining hockey.
        (I still loathe Thomas BTW).
        Hasek 735 regular season games. 2.20 .922
        119 playoff games 2.02 .925
        Thomas 378 regular season games 2.48 9.21
        50 playoff games 2.07 .933

you don’t see many glove saves as good as the one he made early…and stopping eric staal on a penalty shot is sort of ok too.

I do stand corrected, the leather and the solid positioning

  73. LeGrosBill says:

I have a theory: every game one line seems to dominate, maybe it is more apparent on road games where the opposing team decides the match-ups, but i think that the Habs’ solid top three lines allow one of those three to dominate on any given game.

    • krob1000 says:

This is why for years I have disliked the 2 scoring , 2 grinder route….3 more even offensive lines is the way to go….unless yur to lines are ridiculously loaded a la Pittsburgh
