Liveblog: Canadiens blow two-goal lead in third, lose in Shootout

160909240_slide

Tomas Plekanek, brilliant all night, scored 45 seconds into the third period to give the Canadiens a 4-2 lead.
Done and dusted, right?
Wrong.
Ryan White’s idiotic double-minor opened the door to a Buffalo goal by Thomas Vanek.
The Buffalo sniper scored again off a wild scramble to tie it 4-4 with two seconds left.

No goals in OT, so on to the season’s first Shootout.

Vanek: Goal

Galchenyuk: GOAL!

Ennis: Save

Bourque: Save

Pomminville: Goal

Gionta: Save

Sabres had 40 shots tonight… 7 Powerplays… a 5 on 3… and Budaj made 17/18 saves when the barrage was on in the 2nd period.

He played a good (not great) game.

The fact of the matter is this game is 4-2 and its practically in the bag when Ryan White does something stupid.

I’m sorry, this loss isn’t on the backup goalie.

      Totally agree!

Also would of helped the last two game if we have a top line performing at even 50%.

      DD to the waiver wire

    • ed lopaz says:

Budaj is down and out, deep in his crease, on his knees, his stomach, and his back, and finally deep into his net, during scrambles around the crease.

His technique is questionable on certain plays, and terrible on others.

He plays very “small” and weak.

Carey Price, who is playing lights out, world class goaltending for us, wins us this game hands down, going away, like 4-1.

  2. kmachabs27 says:

K seriously MT, gionta in the shootout? give it to the hot hand pleks, gionta is and always has been garbage in the shootout. Patches looks lost out there and so does cole, thats all i got from that game, the rest positive. So help me god if we lose to those clowns on saturday. Night.

  3. “No Excuses huh” For me, Budaj was a joke tonight. He looked shaky from the start, and it continued throughout the night. Too far back in his crease and nervous to challenge the shooter. The coach made a bonehead move playing him tonight. The season is much too short to balance the workload between goalies. Overall, The rest of the team played well, considering they lost a heartbreaker to Boston the night before.
The goal with less than 2 seconds left…Budaj should have had his glove on it as it was laying in front of him for seconds,”my god fella take control”. On the other hand, surely the ref didn’t see the puck and therefore in my mind, he should have blown the whistle for a stoppage in play. long before the pool shot into the net. These back to back losses surely takes the wind out of our sails somewhat. Apparently these adversities build character, and are said to even themselves out over the course of the season…that’s if we make the playoffs that is. Oh well off to Toronto, more guts sweat and toil…we can only watch to see what happens.

  5. Led says:

I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict we’ll have a different back-up next year! :)

  6. ed lopaz says:

Boone “hoped” for 1 point, and “double reversed cursed” us into a 1 point night.

Therefore, by HIO logic, I blame Boone!

  7. twilighthours says:

Probable final comment: I’m definitely back on the Eller bandwagon. Kid’s been great.

See you cats tomorrow or Saturday. And chin up: it’s still way more fun than last year.

  8. The Dude says:

What do the fans think of DD tonight…Myself ,personalty speaking,I think he’s screwed until they pay Cole’s hypnotist the ransom!

    • AnimalMother says:

      My god.

Please read my posts for the last two weeks DD is done. Over. Flash in the pan.

Too small. Not fast enough. Terrible altogether.

    • Marc10 says:

Yep. They’re linked at the hip. It’s time to get this line going. I think we take White out of the lineup, dress a seventh D and start shuffling forwards and double shifting those who deserve (and sitting those that don’t perform). And I absolutely think this will happen.

The season’s too short. You don’t fix things when you’re winning, but when you lose, it’s your opportunity to make adjustments. Pleks’ line is good. The Kid line is good. Let’s use elements from those lines (and Eller obviously) to inject some fuel in the engine.

And hopefully that will get everyone back on line. I do think Cole has too much skill/ability/professionalism to simply sit there and let his team down. Same with Max and DD.

  9. Don Carnage says:

Its all MT fault, the coach sucks

  10. D Man says:

White! Arrrgh! There’s the game right there. Love Bourque. More ice time for Eller.

You can’t be both a Habs and a Leafs fan

  11. Stormin says:

Colby Armstrong very Happy Ryan White is on the team

  12. ont fan says:

Well the heat is off PK. White just took his place. Wonder what he was thinking. Got to give it to Ott.

  13. twilighthours says:

I’m enjoying the messages on here tonight more than last night. Instead of “we are so soft and small” it’s “I hate White/Budaj”

For some reason, this feels more natural.

  14. HABSGUARDIANANGEL says:

Why does tsn 690 keep saying we finished last in the east. We finished 14th and got the third pick in the lottery.

  15. Seps says:

Lot of blame for this one. First things first, in what world is that scramble a goal, I couldn’t see the puck whatsoever for the whole scrum, these refs are horrendous. Two, White we all know. Three, has anyone ever witnessed Gionta score in a shootout? Who sends him out there, I knew it was over when he was shooting, also Bourque couldn’t buy one in regulation, so why put him in their in the shootout. *Exhale* I needed that rant.

    • JF says:

Gionta was one of the few who scored in the shootout last year and the year before. That year (2009-10), his most notable shootout goal was against Anaheim, in a game in which we were down 3-1 with about three minutes left. We tied it (Markov and Gionta, I think), and Gionta’s shootout goal was the decider. Without that win, we wouldn’t have made the playoffs.

    • rjcp says:

We lost tonight for 4 reasons: 1. Budaj is soft, he was staring right down at the puck with his left hand free and not smart enough to cover it, instead he lets them bang away at it to tie the game 2. White, just plain stupid 3. Therrien was out-coached again! He got lots out of the players to start the season from emotion, not systems. His choice of defence pairings on the PK is questionable. Diaz cannot kill penalties, he’s too soft, as is Eller 4. Shoot out is not something we are good at, why not Gallagher? Plekanec scored twice in the game, why not? Looking at Therrien’s face behind the bench tonight was making me sick just like JM’s did, bad sign, bad night.

  16. 69HABS says:

MB should have shopped aroung for a Reliable backup!

  22. AnimalMother says:

Am I the only one praying o see Dd along with White in press box?

  23. Marc10 says:

Therrien about White (loosely translated from the 98.5 scrum)

“The first time we gave him a chance. The second time we sent him a message. The third time he better understand…”

  24. twilighthours says:

If we’re going to do this blame thing, let’s do it proper:

1st goal: Desharnais, Subban, and the winger (Patches?) all responsible

    2nd goal: Markov’s terrible cross-ice pass, Emelin’s bad pinch, Cole’s lazy backcheck

    3rd goal: White’s penalty

4th goal: all 6 guys on the ice. All they had to do was slow down the Buff puck carrier even a tiny bit and/or freeze the puck.

    • Bill says:

Armstrong on the ice in the last four seconds, lol. And Emelin instead of Subban or even Gorges. Not a brilliant match-up.

I’m not blaming MT though, he coached a good game. The look on his face when White suckered Ott said it all. He was in disbelief. I am just wondering about the players he put out there.

  25. lavie says:

I don’t have any stats but just guess Habs better shootout players:

    Chucky,
    Markov,
    Eller,
    Gally,
    DD,
    Subban (maybe)

  26. 69HABS says:

    Bill Bill Bill

“Team needs to help you out”. They scored 4 bloody goals for Boodaj & he let in two very soft goals!

  27. Habitant in Surrey says:

…loosely translating from French …Therrien ends by saying ‘ playing White not one of My better decisions’

  28. Adidess says:

MT: “This is the 3rd time, White better understand this time”
On the goal: “We don’t understand the standards for interference”

    ——————————————
    Long signatures are annoying

  29. Tis Himself says:

I don’t care what anyone says. Gomez played a large part in tonight’s meltdown!

  30. JF says:

If White is benched again, as he should be, this will play into Eller’s hands. He’s been good the last few games; perhaps he can solidify his spot in the lineup.

  31. Led says:

I might be angry if I wasn’t laughing so hard. Sometimes you just gotta’ laugh. No way Buffalo deserves to walk away with 2 points, yet that’s just what they did. We certainly didn’t play a great game but at 4-2 it should’ve been over. Learn from it and move on.

  32. Rejean says:

Went back and looked at the last second goal. First, clear goaltender interference.. Ott pushed Budaj into the net.. but the biggest question i have is WHY WAS LARS ELLER on the ice? He got clearly beat up the ice and had no clue what was going on. Lars Eller. With a game on the line would you have Lars Eller out there.. Plek’s and George’s would pushed around.. where was PK?

    • Adidess says:

I agree Rejean. With everything that happened, we still had the game won with 22 seconds to go. When you look at the five guys delegated to defend that one goal lead, it’s clear this loss is on MT. White screwed up, but we still could have won the game if we had the right guys (more physical Dmen) in for the remaining seconds.

      ——————————————
      Long signatures are annoying

  33. AnimalMother says:

    DD needs to be waived

  34. Ian Cobb says:

Second night in a row we have been out coached. He will burn out Markov,s knees pretty soon. And has Therrien not looked at the Gorges, PK pairing of last year. Boullion should play with Markov. Emilin and Dias can not get it done yet.

Our Stanley Cup run is done again! the ride was fun while it lasted.

Now for the positive, we can only go up from here and we will get better, once Therrien gets to know his players.

  35. CCL says:

I don’t know about White. puts his team in a bad situation taking stupid penalties. up until than the Habs played a good game considering they played last night. I guess one point is better than none and right now .I don’t feel good about Saturday night either.
the pass two games we played good enough to win. but didn’t.

By the way. Don’t blame Budaj. He had 43 shots fired at him. our Guys just couldn’t put it away. looks like signs of last year.

  36. jedimyrmidon says:

So, um, Pacs-DD-Cole is REALLY taking its sweet time to get going. Time to shake things up? Promote Eller?

  37. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …Therrien on RDS …seems it’s ‘strike 3′ for White

  38. Tis Himself says:

White’s a dumbass and the officiating sucked, but Budaj is the second coming of freakin’ David Aebischer!

  39. HardHabits says:

    White between Cole and Pacioretty!!

  40. nova scotia vees says:

One more thing….Unless Price is injured, why is he sitting? Brodeur and many others play night in and night out. Is he soft or something? We basically do not have a second goalie, but Price should play and play. It’s only a 48 game schedule.

  41. habzfan2003 says:

    So…

    Budaj is just brutal.

White takes the awful penalty that gets Buffalo back into the game
Someone on here mentioned that the interference on Budaj for the game tying goal wasn’t reviewable???

So what the hell happened in the LA vs. EDM game??? The one where the oilers tied it late… Referee blatantly calls it a goal on the ice… But under further review and after “calling upstairs” it was determined that Sam Gagner was interfering with Quick when Quick had his pad wrapped around Gagner’s leg… In conclusion the goal is disallowed….!!! So if Budaj is pushed into the F’in net…. It’s obvious it should be no goal right!?

  42. deuce6 says:

We really need to add some talent in the crease behind Price..If Carey goes down we’re FxxKED…Budaj can’t carry the load and he certainly isn’t up to spelling Price..

  48. habstrinifan says:

I asked earlier and got no response. Maybe Boone might know. I s Price suffering and lingering effect from the Eller shot in practice. Maybe Therien had no choice but to play Budaj.

  49. AnimalMother says:

1st line isn’t slumping, they are awful and need a change

  50. Fansincebirth says:

I know we aren’t supposed to rag on the reffing and yes, White and Budaj are partly responsible but how the hell does Toranna allow a goal where one player is pushing the goalie to the back of the net and the goalie has the puck frozen but the freaking ref never blows the whistle?

What kind of a crap bag full of idiots are reffing this year?

    • Mondou6 says:

Buffalo announcers said that was “not reviewable”. They basically admitted that it was goalie interference, but couldn’t be overturned by video review.

  51. Mondou6 says:

I think White still has time to grow into being a valuable 3rd line player on some other team’s AHL affiliate.

  52. Mavid says:

  56. Galchenyuk says:

This was our win. We lost because of Ryan White and the Refs, there’s no way around it. Budaj was not the best tonight obviously, BUT he did enough for the win! The refs robbed the game! I may sound like a sore loser, but IT’S THE TRUTH! And Ryan White, he is making too many serious mistakes that are costing the team. He has to be benched and punished in some way. We DESERVED that one more point, and the way we lost it is depressing. This was our bounce-back. This win would have established us as an elite team, being able to bounce back from a loss for the second time. I’m angry, and I can rant for a long time. The Habs will win Saturday. The last two games have been so difficult…nevertheless, GO HABS GO!

…I think He will be a good third line player in the NHL …I hope, after a period of watching from the press box He gets another chance

  59. HABitual Fan says:

Unless the guy’s tongue is literally hanging out on the ice, we cannot, I repeat, WE CANNOT afford to give Price another night off!

  60. Hamayoune says:

    Highlights of today:

    1. Galchenyuk truly is zing at shoot outs
    2. Subban is the D we have always he was, the kind we build a team around
    3. Plecky is just amazing
    4. Coles is sleeping, so are his line mates
    5. Budaj isn’t a competent backup goalie, I felt nervous everything the puck came in Montreal’s territory + he gives up terrible rebounds
    6. White: wth?

I’m sure Therrien will school his players, and hopefully we won’t such a disappointment in the near future, inshallah. Amen

We are not going to see White wearing the red, white and blue again! he is gone, or Therrien loses all credibility about accountability.

Alone this jackass has cost us two games, because he has brain damage and no concept how a team plays to win.
Up by two goals and he wants to jump Ott. See ya later White. You did not learn a thing, move on.!

    • krob1000 says:

His heart is in the right place but unfortunately his head is somewhere between his lower back and his hamstrings.

      • Led says:

I agree krob. I think his instincts say “stand up for yourself and your teammates”. Unfortunately his brain needs to stop him in certain situations. I hope he is applauded for his heart but taught to use his head also.

  65. Stormin says:

WTF the W now stands for White

  66. 69HABS says:

    Bill

Total momentum killer BS. That was done by Boodaj giving up two soft goals second after the Habs taking the first two leads …

Therien shat the bed TWICE now by playing Boodaj twice …

Price is more than comfortable with this workload …

    • Stormin says:

Over coaching by playing Budaj twice so far this season,

    • Bill says:

It’s common practice to play your back up goalie in back to back to games.

Being a back-up is tough, you’re always rusty. Team needs to help you out. Pretty much everyone did that except White. Why are you defending him? This one is pretty obvious. You don’t do that with a 2-goal lead in the third … Hockey 101 stuff.

      Full Breezer 4 Life

  67. Habfan29 says:

White might have let buffalo back into the game but we need another backup budaj is brutal. On tying goal all he had to do was cover the puck it was right by his glove. gallies and Eller in shootout not Gionta!!!!!!!!!
Racking pisses me off when habs lose like this…..

  68. lavie says:

Now the team doesn’t need White type of player, Prust and Moen are who we really need.

  69. Habitant in Surrey says:

..I wouldn’t second-guess Toronto if Ott was pushed or steered into the blue, but he purposely entered deep in the blue, made ZERO effort to get out, and purposefully bumped Buday

…based on all the chintzy borderline interference calls on the goalie lately in the NHL, the non-call by Toronto leaves Me boggled

  70. twilighthours says:

We can debate the good and bad of Therrien so far, but what’s not in debate is Rene Bork. Whatever MT did to get him going was pure genius. Bork’s been great.

  71. krob1000 says:

As bad as Whites braincramps have been …how about Steve Ott…IMO he was the under the rdar star…he suckered White in and interfered with BUdaj….and all the while had the stupid grin on his face…can’t stand that guy

  72. homerbowen says:

Of course White will be the scapegoat (RDS) but more and more MT’s coaching is becoming questionable. Loose to the Laffs on Sat and team confidence will be difficult to recover. What would possess him to put Gionta in the shootout?

  73. zorro says:

Sabre fans booing their team in the last 2:30 minutes, then cheer them like a stanley cup winner, F^#n bullshit. Budaj had the puck frozen, should ve been no goal. White needs to grow up.

  74. krob1000 says:

Question….would you sign a free agent if it guaranteed you 5 points over the season? HOw much would that be worth? Ryan WHite has now been responsible for 3 points in this shortened season (Ottawa and tonight)….that is the 82 game equivalent of 5 points….that is tough to swallow from a 4th liner when a team would probably pay 5 million for a guy who would mean 5 points.

  75. karpen33 says:

You want a TSN turning point in the season remember this game. New culture same result. The second they tied it up we all new who was going to win this game. Sorry to say but they looked like the Laffs in this game.
