Liveblog: Canadiens blow two-goal lead in third, lose in Shootout

160909240_slide

Tomas Plekanek, brilliant all night, scored 45 seconds into the third period to give the Canadiens a 4-2 lead.
Done and dusted, right?
Wrong.
Ryan White’s idiotic double-minor opened the door to a Buffalo goal by Thomas Vanek.
The Buffalo sniper scored again off a wild scramble to tie it 4-4 with two seconds left.

No goals in OT, so on to the season’s first Shootout.

Vanek: Goal

Galchenyuk: GOAL!

Ennis: Save

Bourque: Save

Pomminville: Goal

Gionta: Save

Can’t imagine Michael Farber was involved with SI’s most hated list. Having PK in the No. 1 spot actually strikes me as a bit sinister. I can see how he might be perceived as annoying by other teams/fans, maybe even sometimes in his own room. But there’s no way he’s in the same league as the other 9. They’re all there because the kinds of things they do have the potential “to bring the game into disrepute”. PK is mostly just flamboyant — unapologetically so — as well as talented. Maybe SI needs to define ‘hate’.

    • Mike Boone says:

To his credit, the SI writer says the uptight NHL could use some more flamboyant players like P.K.

As they put him at number 1. Sounds like BS to me, sorry Mike but I don’t buy that. Thats like saying they really don’t feel this way but they do.

        • Dunboyne Mike says:

It’s an opinion piece, right? Not like, say, one of our HIO polls. So this guy — who is clearly not a Michael Farber — has somehow divined that “these are the guys you love to loathe”.

Says who? How does he know? And you’re absolutely right, Trini, about his ambiguity on PK. Talking out of both sides of his mouth at once.

Anyway, I don’t think anyone’s paying attention: the piece has garnered a total of two (2) comments in four hours. One pointing out that you can’t take seriously anything Mike Milbury says, and the other insisting that the No. 1 spot goes to Bettman!

    Evening Mike.
I like the Budaj call. Hab in Surrey makes a valid point about starting your No. 1 for a rebound game. But if Therrien is parking that philosophy and telling Budaj to go out and win the rebound, the potential rewards for team and individual are great.

  19. commandant says:

    @HabinBurlington

You are 100% correct. The union SHOULD have an issue with the Isles circumventing the floor, and in a normal year they would.

However this season, when the Escrow is so high, they may not care too much because this cap hit doesn’t count against player share of salary (since its never paid) and actually lowers the escrow to all members slightly.

The question is…. is it better to have one more NHL job (ie force the Isles to pay a real player), or have a small reduction in escrow league wide. Add to that the fact that this trade could also mean the Bruins acquire one more player, and suddenly even that is taken out of the equation.

    • HabinBurlington says:

Principle should matter, this reaks. But Jacobs gets his way. If Donald Fehr had balls he would challenge this, worse than what Montreal was doing to Gomez.

      • commandant says:

I think the NHL itself should challenge this. The Islanders are circumventing the floor and the spirit of the CBA. This is as bad a violation as anything the Devils did with Kovalchuk IMO.

The method may be different, but the violation of the spirit of the deal is the same.

..the dastardly Bruins succeeded …and We failed

…of course, Thomas, nutz or not, was a recent Vezina, MVP and Stanley Cup winner

…which may have had something to do with they succeeding, and We failing

  26. Dunboyne Mike says:

Who are the goalies posting here?
Any of you ever play back-up?
Would I be right in saying this is an ideal time to play Budaj? Quite apart from resting Price, it keeps the No. 2 goalie involved. I know he’s paid to stay involved, even during long stretches without game time. But shouldn’t a team invest in maintaining the morale, match-fitness, and sense of worth of the back-up, all of which require game time? If so, you can help achieve all of that by playing him in a situation like this one with its particular pressures: away game; just lost one, don’t want it to be two in a row; getting the start against a former national team goalie.

    • Habitant in Surrey says:

…I was a goalie Mike, never a back-up, but I can appreciate Budaj wants/needs to play on a personal level

…on a Team basis, though, it’s a one of those tougher coaching decisions, as You want a bounce back game following the loss to Boston to keep Our momentum …and Price increases the odds for success

      …I would play Price tonight

    • The Cat says:

Tim Thomas traded to NY Islanders…..

  34. Habilis says:

File this in the “I hate the Bruins” folder.

The Islanders just traded a conditional 2nd round pick to the Bruins for Tim Thomas. The move is cap related, because the Isles need to get to the cap floor by tomorrow. Thomas’ contract is perfect because it goes against the cap, but they don’t have to pay a dime of it.

The B’s get 5mil more in cap space and a 2nd round pick because Tim Thomas is nuts. Un-friggin-real.

    • bel33 says:

As if I didn’t hate the Bruins enough already. They’ll probably turn that pick into gold.

      • They won’t see that pick unless he plays in the NHL.

      • Habilis says:

It seems that the B’s only get the pick if Thomas reports to the team or if the Isles trade him before his contract expires, which is after next season. So I guess there’s a slim chance of Boston actually getting the pick.

Then again, this is Tim Thomas. He could report tomorrow because he saw a sign in his MRE.

Regardless, Boston still gets rid of a useless contract and now has 5mil more room to play with at the trade deadline. I swear, only the Bruins could pull that off.

    • HabFanSince72 says:

The league should nix that deal. They won’t because Jacobs owns the league, but it is as bad as the Kovalchuk deal in circumventing the spirit of the law.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

      • HabinBurlington says:

The PA should be all over it as well, essentially the Bruins and Islanders just performed an act i can’t state here to each other, no one pays a dime and the teams circumvent the principle of the deal. Donald Fehr needs to jump on this.

I can’t post from work like you guys!
But I’m caught up now, 5 hours ahead of (most of) you here in GMT.

Habstrinifan, you referenced Lucretius! And we had Adorno last week. I feel so… elevated!

Lots of anecdotal references to Cole being a slow starter. And just when I was wondering if there was any data to back it up, there’s Chris with stats from recent seasons. Excellent, and suggesting we need to be more patient. I’d argue that we should extend the same to DD rather than speculating that the rest of the league has “found him out”. Move him or rest him by all means, but don’t dump on him. He’s not Gomez.

StPatrick33!! An oldie but goodie: Toronto building a winner — too bad for the Leafs it’s in Boston!

And couldn’t let this go: the suggestion we’d all love Lucic if he were a Hab (was that you Commandant? Sorry to impugn you if not!). There are plenty of Bruins I’d be content to see as Habs — Kelly, Krejci, Hamilton, Rask, Seguin, Peverley, Seidenberg, even Campbell, even Thornton. But never Lucic, never Marchand — useful players, but zero class.

    What would Lucretius say?

    • Habitant in Surrey says:

…with all due respect Mike, Steve (24 Cups) reflects My own long standing opinion that Milan Lucic is EXACTLY what the Habs should have drafted, and He would have been developed to reflect the class of the Montreal Canadiens

…I am in Vancouver, and I watched Milan for 2 or 3 years …and was very disappointed We overlooked selecting him

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

And in fairness, the shattered Canucks fans gave him an affectionate ovation at the Cup presentation on their own ice.

You could be right. But I would need to be persuaded that the lack of class he shows in episodes like the Miller hit was something foisted on him by the Bruins rather than something in his nature. I try to see the best in everybody, but I find it very difficult with him. (I remain open to the possibility that I am completely wrong on this).

        • Habitant in Surrey says:

…He’s a BIG player Mike …and I think that Miller hit, IMO, was overblown

…If You recall Milan’s beat-down of that pussy Komisarek, and the next time they met Komisarek went after Lucic with a crosscheck to Lucic’s head ?

…I heard no Habs Fans reprimanding Komi for that vicious dirty attempt to injure Lucic, as He missed

…Lucic is like a battleship out there …He’s big and powerful, so unsurprisingly He hits hard and bodies go flying …yet He can skate, better than average hands and puts pucks in nets

…would love that kind of guy on Our team …He reminds Me of John Ferguson

        That’s actually a good comparison.

And HF72, Community is very much a hit or miss show. I love it, and consider it the best implementer of subtle/hidden jokes since Arrested development.

But it is a niche type of humor, so those that don’t care for it, really don’t care for it. If you decide to watch it, know that the first 5 episodes or so aren’t great, as the show shifted focus after that.

EDIT: just to give it some perspective, the other comedies I watch are New Girl, Archer, and It’s Always Sunny, with occasional viewings of Modern Family which I find funny while watching but always seem to forget after.

        • Haberoooo13 says:

Community is very funny and much too different to be popular.

It’s very demographic specific, my age group of mid twenties to mid thirties (I’m 27) love it and are fiercely loyal. But outside of that group it might as well not exist.

And the archaic Neilsen ratings sure isn’t going to help keep it around.

        • Willy says:

Good taste in shows there. Archer and It’s always sunny are 2 of my favourites. Don’t know if you watch it, but you should check out The League. Another one of those great FX comedies.

          • jmsheehy19 says:

I’ve been meaning to watch the league, as my friends keep telling me I’d love it. Same with Justified and Louie.

But right now, I watch the Walking Dead, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, and am finally starting Breaking Bad. Combined with the aforementioned shows I watch like 6-8 hours of tv a week (not counting hockey).

Need to let some others end before I start up another.

        • HabFanSince72 says:

          I love Community.

It’s just that Season 4 is supposed to be quite poor. Sony fired the show’s creator Dan Harmon.

    Is Price in?

    • Bill says:

It’s interesting that every other player’s placement on the list is explained with specific references to known behaviours … except for Subban’s. It just says people don’t like his “flashy personality” because it’s a break from “hockey tradition”.

There’s not a single on or off-ice incident mentioned. And I’ve never heard of one, either. This is what has always puzzled me about the Subban hate … no one can point to a specific reason for it.

      • Cal says:

If Matt Cook isn’t on that list, it’s complete and utter bs.

        • Bill says:

Haha, actually I couldn’t agree with it more. Except for PK.

Cookie has reformed and apologized, so he’s given a pass, according to the article.

          • Dunboyne Mike says:

Matt Cook really revolted me. But if he sticks to the turnaround that he seems to have pulled off last season, then it will be quite an amazing refutation of that old leopard and spots thing. And I for one would give him a lot of credit.

(Other leopards have their spots attached with Super Glue. Lucic, Marchand etc).

    • HabFab says:

And the author states “Subban’s flashy personality on and off the ice is a break from hockey tradition, and that clearly rankles some people. Too bad. I think the game needs more characters like him.”

How many 4th liners who can play 10 minutes a game… be good on the PK, score 5-10 goals a year, and fight approximately once every 10 games are out there.

Max Talbot, Jay Mcclement, Craig Adams, Boyd Gordon, Erik Condra, Paul Gaustad, Lauri Korpikoski, Matt Cooke, Ryan Jones, Eric Belanger….

The list goes on and on.

4th liners who can kill penalties ARE a dime a dozen.

Mike Blunden could do Travis Moen’s job on the ice tomorrow and we wouldn’t miss a beat.

In the room Moen’s a nice addition, as far as the on-ice product? He’s easily expendable and arguably should be moved.

  76. punkster says:
