Tomas Plekanek, brilliant all night, scored 45 seconds into the third period to give the Canadiens a 4-2 lead.
Done and dusted, right?
Wrong.
Ryan White’s idiotic double-minor opened the door to a Buffalo goal by Thomas Vanek.
The Buffalo sniper scored again off a wild scramble to tie it 4-4 with two seconds left.
No goals in OT, so on to the season’s first Shootout.

Budaj eh? Almost makes me not want to watch this game. But it’s freezing outside and there is nothing else on the tube. I’ll begrudgingly watch my poor Habs take one on the chin…
these are the kinds of games you ask your elite, world class goalie to steal for you.
Ed! What do you reckon Ruff put in their cereal this morning?! Yes they’re tired of losing and yes they owe us one. But are you sure this mental state will translate into an explosion of quality?
(I’m not being facetious – you know more about this than I do. But the evidence for the Sabres in 2013 hardly suggests we’re about to become roadkill in the absence of Price).
(And I’m an honest guy, with my hat on the table between a knife and fork…)
More like 2 points!!!
Can’t imagine Michael Farber was involved with SI’s most hated list. Having PK in the No. 1 spot actually strikes me as a bit sinister. I can see how he might be perceived as annoying by other teams/fans, maybe even sometimes in his own room. But there’s no way he’s in the same league as the other 9. They’re all there because the kinds of things they do have the potential “to bring the game into disrepute”. PK is mostly just flamboyant — unapologetically so — as well as talented. Maybe SI needs to define ‘hate’.
To his credit, the SI writer says the uptight NHL could use some more flamboyant players like P.K.

As they put him at number 1. Sounds like BS to me, sorry Mike but I don’t buy that. Thats like saying they really don’t feel this way but they do.
It’s an opinion piece, right? Not like, say, one of our HIO polls. So this guy — who is clearly not a Michael Farber — has somehow divined that “these are the guys you love to loathe”.
Says who? How does he know? And you’re absolutely right, Trini, about his ambiguity on PK. Talking out of both sides of his mouth at once.
Anyway, I don’t think anyone’s paying attention: the piece has garnered a total of two (2) comments in four hours. One pointing out that you can’t take seriously anything Mike Milbury says, and the other insisting that the No. 1 spot goes to Bettman!

Evening Mike.
I like the Budaj call. Hab in Surrey makes a valid point about starting your No. 1 for a rebound game. But if Therrien is parking that philosophy and telling Budaj to go out and win the rebound, the potential rewards for team and individual are great.

@HabinBurlington
You are 100% correct. The union SHOULD have an issue with the Isles circumventing the floor, and in a normal year they would.
However this season, when the Escrow is so high, they may not care too much because this cap hit doesn’t count against player share of salary (since its never paid) and actually lowers the escrow to all members slightly.
The question is…. is it better to have one more NHL job (ie force the Isles to pay a real player), or have a small reduction in escrow league wide. Add to that the fact that this trade could also mean the Bruins acquire one more player, and suddenly even that is taken out of the equation.

Principle should matter, this reaks. But Jacobs gets his way. If Donald Fehr had balls he would challenge this, worse than what Montreal was doing to Gomez.
I think the NHL itself should challenge this. The Islanders are circumventing the floor and the spirit of the CBA. This is as bad a violation as anything the Devils did with Kovalchuk IMO.
The method may be different, but the violation of the spirit of the deal is the same.

Tonight’s game set to music:
http://calshabsongparodies.weebly.com
I dont agree that our chances are slim tonight. I think White is ready to take advantage of his chance and the smaller confines will suit him. I expect White to be in between the kids tonight at some point.
Lip-readers should watch White during the warm-up:
“No bonehead penalties. No bonehead penalties”… etc
LOL! Maybe he and Subban should be singing the mantra together. Subban was a bit too reckless in drawing the second penalty last night.
Agreed.
Then, get two of the officials to sing it as well. Barbershop quartet.
Everyone is talking like budaj is the worst goalie in the league or something, I don’t understand it. I think he’ll play great, he played fine last game, the team in front of him was the not so great part.
…the Team, not Budaj, was the reason for the loss to Ottawa, 100 % agree
…I just think in a ‘bounce-back’ situation one goes with one’s best
If they weren’t playing back to back i’d agree with you, but playing 2 games in a row is a lot harder on a goalie than anyone else on the ice.
Hard to play “fine” when you drop to your knees before a shot is attempted.
Ottawa saw this faked the initial shot and scored how many in the top of the net?
Budaj was dumped by Colorado wonder why, probably cuz he couldnt win!
He’s a legacy of the Goat and should have been dealt with before the lockout!

Yes, or: demote the whole DD line to allow it to sort itself out, and play Eller between the Kids (with apologies to Prust who has been mostly doing all that’s asked of him). Maybe a bit of both (without crossing over into JM-style juggling!).
So would I!

…was not Boston’s trade of Thomas to the Islanders similar to what We had been trying to do with Gomez ? …finding some team with a salary floor problem ?
..the dastardly Bruins succeeded …and We failed
…of course, Thomas, nutz or not, was a recent Vezina, MVP and Stanley Cup winner
…which may have had something to do with they succeeding, and We failing
It’s not the same because the Isles don’t have to pay a dime of the Thomas contract. It’s basically just a free 5 million dollar cap hit, unless Thomas reports.
…thank you David
Reason why Boston wa slucky is that Thomas with-held his services while under an active contract and therefor the Bruins were able to suspend him for non performance.. and thus he was not counting against their cap.
But yes it always seems to work out for them.
hes over 35, so he gets paid regardless of suspension or not.
Chiarelli… the Boston GM said he had to suspend Thomas to get him of his book and make cap room. He said this immediately the lockout ended. So I dont exactly know how it works… but Chiarelli did use the phrase “I have to suspend Tim to make cap room”.
Not when he is refusing to play. His salary still counts against the Cap because of the over 35 rule BUT he doesn’t get paid.
He counts against the cap regardless. He doesn’t get paid.

Who are the goalies posting here?
Any of you ever play back-up?
Would I be right in saying this is an ideal time to play Budaj? Quite apart from resting Price, it keeps the No. 2 goalie involved. I know he’s paid to stay involved, even during long stretches without game time. But shouldn’t a team invest in maintaining the morale, match-fitness, and sense of worth of the back-up, all of which require game time? If so, you can help achieve all of that by playing him in a situation like this one with its particular pressures: away game; just lost one, don’t want it to be two in a row; getting the start against a former national team goalie.
…I was a goalie Mike, never a back-up, but I can appreciate Budaj wants/needs to play on a personal level
…on a Team basis, though, it’s a one of those tougher coaching decisions, as You want a bounce back game following the loss to Boston to keep Our momentum …and Price increases the odds for success
…I would play Price tonight
Do you think Price may be slightly hurt from the Eller shot in practice.
Evening Trini!
Did you get my tribute way earlier in the thread?!
…He played decently against Boston showing no effects Trini …He’s a young buck too …those kinds of dings are gotten over quickly
…though, I won’t speculate if His girlfriend agrees with Me
Or his singing teacher…
But if you play the back-up and win, the win has much added value, for the back-up and therefore for the team.
Of course, if you lose, it’s two games in a row and the back-up’s depressed…
I always loved it when Bunny played!
Of course, plus listening to some talk, its like hes a sieve. Budaj will do well tonight Im sure.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
In fact it is a bad time to play Boodaj. The Sabres will be out to avange the horrible loss last weekend …
You’re right, Soixante-Neuf, but I guess it begs the question: WHEN do you play him?

If Donald Fehr and company had a problem with Gomez being told to go home and keep money, they have to have a problem with the Islanders receiving cap benefit from a player they will never pay or report. I realize Thomas made the choice, but this should be a Bruin problem and not a benefit to another team.
Congrats on your ‘feature’ by Boone HabinBurlington. It is well deserved.

It’s gonna boil down to Budaj against miller tonight. you won’t see Buffalo play the same type of game they played in Montreal. their winning record is not good right now in order to make the playoffs. Buffalo gotta start playing better. starting tonight.
Tim Thomas traded to NY Islanders…..
…I think the New York Islanders is the only hockey organization on this Earth that would trade for a Tim Thomas
File this in the “I hate the Bruins” folder.
The Islanders just traded a conditional 2nd round pick to the Bruins for Tim Thomas. The move is cap related, because the Isles need to get to the cap floor by tomorrow. Thomas’ contract is perfect because it goes against the cap, but they don’t have to pay a dime of it.
The B’s get 5mil more in cap space and a 2nd round pick because Tim Thomas is nuts. Un-friggin-real.
As if I didn’t hate the Bruins enough already. They’ll probably turn that pick into gold.
They won’t see that pick unless he plays in the NHL.

It seems that the B’s only get the pick if Thomas reports to the team or if the Isles trade him before his contract expires, which is after next season. So I guess there’s a slim chance of Boston actually getting the pick.
Then again, this is Tim Thomas. He could report tomorrow because he saw a sign in his MRE.
Regardless, Boston still gets rid of a useless contract and now has 5mil more room to play with at the trade deadline. I swear, only the Bruins could pull that off.
The league should nix that deal. They won’t because Jacobs owns the league, but it is as bad as the Kovalchuk deal in circumventing the spirit of the law.
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
The PA should be all over it as well, essentially the Bruins and Islanders just performed an act i can’t state here to each other, no one pays a dime and the teams circumvent the principle of the deal. Donald Fehr needs to jump on this.
Buck Fruins!

Sure it’s a second round pick? All I read was that it was a conditional pick in 2014 or 2015. Round wasn’t specified.
Conditional 2nd round pick.
Dismissed by some pundits as “not a Michel Therrien player”, Eller is playing himself back into the coach’s good graces.
…is exactly why he IS a Michel Therrien player.
No answers, just opinions. Bite me. Och.
Islanders trade for Tim Thomas (for a conditional second round pick) to get to the salary floor. Sure, but they wouldn’t take Gomez. But he’s so good in the room!
Moen is out, White’s in – big whoop. I bet it won’t make any difference as neither player has contributed in any way lately.
Booday will do awesome. He will stop 2 pucks.
I’m not surprised Budaj is starting.

I can’t post from work like you guys!
But I’m caught up now, 5 hours ahead of (most of) you here in GMT.
Habstrinifan, you referenced Lucretius! And we had Adorno last week. I feel so… elevated!
Lots of anecdotal references to Cole being a slow starter. And just when I was wondering if there was any data to back it up, there’s Chris with stats from recent seasons. Excellent, and suggesting we need to be more patient. I’d argue that we should extend the same to DD rather than speculating that the rest of the league has “found him out”. Move him or rest him by all means, but don’t dump on him. He’s not Gomez.
StPatrick33!! An oldie but goodie: Toronto building a winner — too bad for the Leafs it’s in Boston!
And couldn’t let this go: the suggestion we’d all love Lucic if he were a Hab (was that you Commandant? Sorry to impugn you if not!). There are plenty of Bruins I’d be content to see as Habs — Kelly, Krejci, Hamilton, Rask, Seguin, Peverley, Seidenberg, even Campbell, even Thornton. But never Lucic, never Marchand — useful players, but zero class.
What would Lucretius say?
…with all due respect Mike, Steve (24 Cups) reflects My own long standing opinion that Milan Lucic is EXACTLY what the Habs should have drafted, and He would have been developed to reflect the class of the Montreal Canadiens
…I am in Vancouver, and I watched Milan for 2 or 3 years …and was very disappointed We overlooked selecting him
And in fairness, the shattered Canucks fans gave him an affectionate ovation at the Cup presentation on their own ice.
You could be right. But I would need to be persuaded that the lack of class he shows in episodes like the Miller hit was something foisted on him by the Bruins rather than something in his nature. I try to see the best in everybody, but I find it very difficult with him. (I remain open to the possibility that I am completely wrong on this).
…He’s a BIG player Mike …and I think that Miller hit, IMO, was overblown
…If You recall Milan’s beat-down of that pussy Komisarek, and the next time they met Komisarek went after Lucic with a crosscheck to Lucic’s head ?
…I heard no Habs Fans reprimanding Komi for that vicious dirty attempt to injure Lucic, as He missed
…Lucic is like a battleship out there …He’s big and powerful, so unsurprisingly He hits hard and bodies go flying …yet He can skate, better than average hands and puts pucks in nets
…would love that kind of guy on Our team …He reminds Me of John Ferguson
For you, HiS, I can try and keep an open mind! And we can revisit as the season progresses. Cheers.
…cheers Mike
Have a bad feeling about tonight……..
1. Sabres are gonna be pissed after the blowout in MTL on Sat.
2. Miller is fully rested (hasn’t played since Sunday)
3. Budaj is playing
4. Habs got here late and are paying back-to-back

Gerald – I see the headmaster quoted you in his intro. I heard you lifted the comment from Chris Spence, the former director of the TDSB:-)
Am now researching who he is and what he did, why do i get the impression it isn’t flattering?
The comment was a paraphrasing of my night’s rants. It was I after all who started the “out-coached” suggestion. I am flattered.
I just assumed you would know who he is seeing that you live just down the highway.

The name rang a bell, but after googling I know why i didn’t know well. For years I tried to do some business with TDSB and the beauracracy was so pathetic I swore off ever caring about them again.
I think last night was a perfect example of the Montreal Canadiens last season. Don’t play to bad, but gave up lead in third period. That happened very often last year…..including OT and shootout loses. Sometimes old habits die hard.
But I am conviced that MT can right the ship this year. Including having healthy bodies back will go a long way. I expect them to rebound nicely tonight.

6. Ottawa has a lot of good kids and decent goaltending. They might just slide in.
1) There has not been a team more stubbornly avoiding the rebuild as Calgary has been. They need to sell off Iginla, Tanguay, Kipper, Bouwmeester, and Cammy (for whatever he can get) and realize that they haven’t been a threat to do anything but slip in and tire down whoever beats them in the first round for years.
2) No, though I hope they do.
3) Edmonton, better team and unless Minny gets going a weaker division
4) Our Weber? Detroit.
5) No
6) Not unless Anderson continues to be the vezina runaway.
the last thing they need to do is trade kipprosoff, he’s the only good thing about that team
That’s why he’s the first thing they should trade. Get some picks/prospects, because they need a MAJOR overhaul. That team is rotten from the ground up. Blow it up and start fresh.

Not just you at all…she has certain Jennifer Love Hewitt qualities
Na Na Na Les Canadiens Les Canadiens
That’s actually a good comparison.
And HF72, Community is very much a hit or miss show. I love it, and consider it the best implementer of subtle/hidden jokes since Arrested development.
But it is a niche type of humor, so those that don’t care for it, really don’t care for it. If you decide to watch it, know that the first 5 episodes or so aren’t great, as the show shifted focus after that.
EDIT: just to give it some perspective, the other comedies I watch are New Girl, Archer, and It’s Always Sunny, with occasional viewings of Modern Family which I find funny while watching but always seem to forget after.
Community is very funny and much too different to be popular.
Na Na Na Les Canadiens Les Canadiens
It’s very demographic specific, my age group of mid twenties to mid thirties (I’m 27) love it and are fiercely loyal. But outside of that group it might as well not exist.
And the archaic Neilsen ratings sure isn’t going to help keep it around.
Good taste in shows there. Archer and It’s always sunny are 2 of my favourites. Don’t know if you watch it, but you should check out The League. Another one of those great FX comedies.
I’ve been meaning to watch the league, as my friends keep telling me I’d love it. Same with Justified and Louie.
But right now, I watch the Walking Dead, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, and am finally starting Breaking Bad. Combined with the aforementioned shows I watch like 6-8 hours of tv a week (not counting hockey).
Need to let some others end before I start up another.
I love Community.
It’s just that Season 4 is supposed to be quite poor. Sony fired the show’s creator Dan Harmon.

My bad then, misread your post.
I’ll believe it’s bad when I see it. I heard the same thing from a number of bogs, but none have said they’ve actually seen it (a few got a sneak at the premier though). Seems like a lot are going on here-say.
She is amazing. Way hotter than Gillian Jacobs (Britta). Can’t wait to watch Community tonight(west coast feed at 11Pm of course).
But a Britta and Annie scene would be……….

Already on it Frank!
You’re famous! Good job Burly!

Any word on who is starting in net?
Working until 4 then heading down to the FN Center for the game…………any word on if Price is playing yet?
Either way the Habs need a win tonight don’t want to drop back to back games.

Looking forward to this game tonight. Let’s repeat Saturday, and move onto to Saturday night. Go Habs Go!

Is Price in?
Because it’s the talk on twitter right now:
http://nhl.si.com/2013/02/07/the-list-nhls-most-hated-players/#
What a crock!
It’s interesting that every other player’s placement on the list is explained with specific references to known behaviours … except for Subban’s. It just says people don’t like his “flashy personality” because it’s a break from “hockey tradition”.
There’s not a single on or off-ice incident mentioned. And I’ve never heard of one, either. This is what has always puzzled me about the Subban hate … no one can point to a specific reason for it.
Full Breezer 4 Life
If Matt Cook isn’t on that list, it’s complete and utter bs.
Haha, actually I couldn’t agree with it more. Except for PK.
Cookie has reformed and apologized, so he’s given a pass, according to the article.
Full Breezer 4 Life
Matt Cook really revolted me. But if he sticks to the turnaround that he seems to have pulled off last season, then it will be quite an amazing refutation of that old leopard and spots thing. And I for one would give him a lot of credit.
(Other leopards have their spots attached with Super Glue. Lucic, Marchand etc).
And the author states “Subban’s flashy personality on and off the ice is a break from hockey tradition, and that clearly rankles some people. Too bad. I think the game needs more characters like him.”
Enough said…..
I love how the list is all thugs and cheap shot artists except for Ribeiro and Subban.
Leaving to go to the game in Buffalo soon.
Got front row seats for me and my son in the Buffalo end. Hopefully the weather holds and it’s a great game.
Enjoy!!! Will you and your boy be in Habs sweaters for us to recognize you?
Of course. section 103 row 1 (Sabres end). This is the bench side of the ice. Not sure which side the camera’s are on.
Geez… FB… you might be needing a hotel room in… YIKES… Buffalo. Snow’s coming down already.
Safe driving!
Hey Burly, nice shout-out from Mr. Boone. Let’s hope Miller continues to be spooked and lets in some nice, easy ones.
I have goosebumps now! I should stop posting now while I am ahead.
GO HABS GO!
1st, long time coming. Go Habs Go!
Who is out to make room? I see Budaj is starting.
I remember Miller’s ill-fated poke check attempt on Crosby in O/T of the Gold Medal Game

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”
How many 4th liners who can play 10 minutes a game… be good on the PK, score 5-10 goals a year, and fight approximately once every 10 games are out there.
These guys arent a dime a dozen, hence why Moen gets the money he does.
you can find guys who do 1 or 2 of those 4 things, but usually not all 4.
Go Habs Go!

…I think Moen is a known quantity in the playoffs too …He always shows up …and I think that is why Our Management and Coach want Him over others
Really Ben?
Max Talbot, Jay Mcclement, Craig Adams, Boyd Gordon, Erik Condra, Paul Gaustad, Lauri Korpikoski, Matt Cooke, Ryan Jones, Eric Belanger….
The list goes on and on.
4th liners who can kill penalties ARE a dime a dozen.
Mike Blunden could do Travis Moen’s job on the ice tomorrow and we wouldn’t miss a beat.
In the room Moen’s a nice addition, as far as the on-ice product? He’s easily expendable and arguably should be moved.
So why move him?
***SUBBANGIN’ NOW BABY!!!***
And how many of those guys make considerably less than Moen’s 1.8 million?
And no, I don’t agree that Blunden can do the same job.

I think we have too many of him with Armstrong, White, Prust.
Just my opinion.
Edit…for Ben…So does it come down to the contract?
***SUBBANGIN’ NOW BABY!!!***
For me it’s roster spot. No point in having four guys of his ilk when you have three and a few readily available in Hamilton.
Redeem himself?
I agree he should be in, but I don’t think he needs to redeem himself!
because its stupid to play a goalie that much. a quick way for this season to go downhill real fast is if price gets injured.
Price does not need to redeem himself. The loss was not on Price last night!
It was good. I love peking duck.
Since not all of us are able to listen, care to share?
And he costs 5 million per season…. not Moen’s 1.8.

Kristo has been good his entire NCAA career.
Yes he’s better as a senior than a junior, (he gets better every year)… but its not liek a guy who did nothing for 2 – 3 years and then broke out, he’s been good all 4 years.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
It ain’t ball hockey out there.
4th line AND left wing. I agree. But if he plays like this MT will have no choice. DD still unimpressive.
Unless it’s Chara. Or Lucic.
Good point!
Maybe Cole can only score goals for losing teams.
About time theres a post that have a positive out look
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
How’s about sit DD and play Eller with Cole and Pacs?
It was a PG panic signing.
Simple. UFA vs. RFA.
I think Eller would wake up both Cole and Pacioretty.
Total BS. They were getting momentum.
He grew up in Oswego NY directly across from Kingston where I grew up. The weather on the south side of Lake Ontario is worse than the north. Sure MTL is worse than Kingston, but it isn’t anything he has not seen before.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
bell center madness…………..SAD THAT WE HAVE SO MANY DOUBTERS ON THIS SITE…….IT GETS STUPID AT TIMES …..GO PLECKS!!!!!!!……….By the way I hope White sits for the rest of the season I am sorry but he is nuts takes a penalty 4 min. what a jerk he thinks he is really something , if anyone needs a talking to IT IS HIM FOR SURE
Who doesn’t hate PJ?
Good Idea….yeah
Parros….
Maybe we can trade White for him
Handing out invitations versus madly sucker punching, night after night….
Both extremes are problems. There is a time and a place for everything…. taking stupid penalties repeatedly is not good.

I di didn’t mind when he went after Fleishman… But the last 2 penaltids have been selfish and idiotic
Oh didn’t realize it was Ott I thought it was someone else
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
Amen.
Prust is the perfect exemple of that balance.
And more goals against while sitting in the penalty box.
What good is 1 goal for, when other teams have scored 4 thanks to your stupid penalties?

You take a number and pick your spot later on. Not when the game is still on the line.
amazing how you managed to blame this one on price.
the heights of irrationality, how are they?
I guess you are Gauthier’s ID.
Do they wear jock straps in some division III france league?
2008 round 2 vs. flyers, game 1, Kovy scored with seconds to go, some 3rd liner scored early in OT

it wasn’t one goal…..it was bringing a team back to life and giving them hope and in a manner that was easy to build energy on…and then Ott goes and knocks Budaj into the net…they got all of the momentum with that pp
that wasn’t in the third period and waas not a two goal lead….and on back to back nights with your backup in and on the road…and there was no intermission to regroup. That Boston game could have gone either way….the goal was a fluke thing…could have been a whistle, could have been goalie interference, could have been a save…coulda, shoulda woulda…but the penalty and pp goal happened and we can pinpoint why…an absolute braindead penalty…and the thrid point cost singlehandedly by Ryan \White
no…

Yes, I’m a Hab fan..Wanna fight about it?
They were both 50% last year and bourque was 41% in calgary the year before.
Noticed that, what’s up with him.
There has to be something making him sad.
contract negotiations. Get over it.
Mr. Biter
No Guts No Glory
The habs played a decent road game, getting the 2 goal lead. White was the reason for the third goal, and the refs were the reason for he last one. It’s the truth.
Go Habs Go! (@leojl8 on twitter)
Probably the best options after both gallys
I was trying to keep it subdued, I can have a complete separate rant for Budaj. He’s just so frustrating to watch.
I didn’t know that shootout stats were Corsi or Fenwick…
You obviously don’t know me, cause I rarely bring up either statistic… maybe you should go talk to Berkshire, they seem to be his thing.
