Liveblog: Canadiens win 4-3, retake top spot

MaxBoston

In the season to date, Boston had given up eight third-period goals.
The Canadiens got two.
Goals by Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais erased a 3-2 deficit and gave the Canadiens a hard-earned win over their arch-rivals.
Peter Budaj made 31 saves … including a brilliant stop on Tyler Seguin in the dying seconds.
The Canadiens move past the Bruins into first place in the Northeast Division and the Eastern Conference.

The Canadiens have a new top line: Desharnais, who scored twice; Pacioretty, with a goal and an assist, and the dynamic rookie Brendan Gallagher, who had two assists.

The Canadiens have taken at least a point in 11 straight games.

    Win at what cost?

if i was the HABS I would be sending some tape to the league. The Bruins consistently dishing out dirty hits, with obvious intent to injure. Instigating fights, Lucic against Prust and Chara versus Emelin were both fights that were instigated by the Bruins.

There was a couple of dirty hits in the back on PK against the the boards and he barely avoided a few other attempts to run his face against the glass. Pacioretty was slashed in the face by a stick an “automatic” penalty even if it was accidental (which it was not), that wasn’t called. A bruin player took a two handed overhead slash at a Canadian (either Gallagher or Desharnais) in front of their net that just barely missed the HAB forward and could have easily hit Rusk but made no contact and drew no penalty. The bruins on ,multiple occasions cross checked HABs defencemen to the ground in front of our net, and assaulted Gallagher and anyone else who even stepped into their Goalies crease.

It was very important that we won the game and, despite both goalies being assisted by the post brothers, Budaj won the battle of the goalies. The HABs won the battle on the scoreboard and the battle for first place in the division. The Guins, won a couple of fights and got away with a few muggings. The refs need to go back to reffing school.

Giving out the occasional two minutes for interference and missing a half dozen “attempted murders”should be grounds for referees to be suspended. Do league officials ever look at the tapes?

I must be getting soft in my old age. I used to enjoy the rough house style of hockey, but frankly I cant stomach it any more. If my kids were still young I would not encourage them to watch or play this sport. It “fun” on the playstation when a player obliterates an opponent with a crushing body check, but to watch guys headhunting and looking to not just take out their man from the play, or even the game, but trying for the huge hit, or that knock out punch, that can end careers , is not what I would call entertaining.

Funny how things change when Budaj played last two games in a row where we gave up hardly any shots on net, let alone chances there was “noise” about the boring style of play.

After this weekend , I think we would all appreciate a couple of snore fests (as long as they end in victories at least)

Congrats to our Habs for a great victory, for not giving in to the goonery, and for standing up for themselves and each other.

The only way that this type of “thug” hockey will end is when it becomes obvious that it does not produce winners.

    regards,

    Steve O.

i dont want to ruin the party, but montreal ,boston games is always exiting and close like this.no matter who plays or coach/gm.still MB has alot things to do.but let face it ,,beside signing prust he didnot do much.he got 3rd over all pick thanks to the result of last season and he will have plenty of picks next year thanks to last gm.WE HAD ONE BIG GUY TO DRIVE TO NET AND MB traded that guy.unless there is some thing internal it does not make any sense.for making some cap space he could done other things(gionta, kabarel).but hey we are first and is march03.however we get lucky bounces a lot this year.still have a hard time to score.still dont have anyone to match against the other goons.no tough big guy on top 9 ,no scary guy on last three.and no one in defence can clear the blue zone or drop the gloves.if you think with this team you can go far in playoffs,SWEET DREAMS

  4. Stevie.Ray says:

Anyone know who is considered the toughest player in this years draft that is expected to go in the first couple of rounds?

Right now i see maybe Gauthier, Nurse and Rychel to be a few of the tougher guys

Am I the only fan who sees Markov for what he really is: slow, washed up, over the hill, uninspired, selfish. Boston Goal number two: Markov lallygagging deep in Boston’s end and leaves Emelin all alone on a two on one and then goes to the net not the Bruin player and kicks the puck in his own net. I feel for Emelin trying to cover for this guy. Trade Markov NOW for a true number one D man. This team deserves that.

    • Stevie.Ray says:

Old, yes he’s getting up there. Slow, he’s not as fast as he once was. Selfish, no. Uninspired, no. over-the-hill, no. He didn’t mean to kick the puck into his own net. And in my opinion, he still has the best stick check in the league. It would be nice if they cut down a bit on his minutes and gave Subban more opportunity to take over though.

      • Stevie.Ray says:

        Markov 27:03
        Subban 26:49
This is nice to see except I would like Markov to be about 3-4 minutes lower.
        Gorges 20:05
        Emelin 19:33
        This is about right.
        Kaberle 13:46
        Boullion 12:44
They both had fairly solid games, but it would be nice to be able to give these minutes (or some of Markov’s minutes) to a strong, big, shutdown defensive defenseman (Tinordi, someday).

One of the most memorable team efforts, also overcoming the pathetic goonery that the nhl obviously is ok with, in many years. A flat out statement game that proves this team can’t be intimidated and we’ve got a solid backup to Price. Doing it without Bourque and Diaz, damn. Prust is solid gold. Max may be an even better sniper than some of thought possible, I mean like best in the league. I’ll keep sayin it – this team has a legit shot to go all the way. You’re lookin at the real deal people!

    • DickandDanny says:

Yup, after we trade Markov for a true number one d man and we’ll look better. He was awful tonight. caused the second goal. Terrible

\”A cannonading blast from the wing, by Lafleur\”

      • plouf says:

Nothing personal, but I think your comments tonight are ass-backwards. Markov, weak moments aside (and no question he ain’t what he used to be) is still the best d-man on this team. Ask Therrien. I guarantee he agrees. As for Armstrong, he has his moments but his spot in the lineup is not based on performance, but on the intangibles, because on the ice he’s mostly a liability. Two soft giveaways right at our own blueline? Guys who get 18 minutes a game can’t match that.

    • Stevie.Ray says:

It really showed the difference from last year’s team.

I have found that Montreal wins the games where they don’t let Boston start hitting. Dump and chase, get to the corner second, and move the puck quickly. If you don’t let Boston hit, then you have eliminated 80% of their team.

But tonight showed that they can stay in it even when Boston tries to goon it up. Didn’t Montreal win the “Boston beat down” too. Should be remembered as the “Boston concentrates their energy on everything but winning” game.

      • billylove says:

From this point forward, the bad ass b’s will know that they are not gonna be able to intimidate their way to a w against the habs this year. Can’t wait for the rematch.

  11. Frank2468 says:

Marchand should get a call Shanahan for that gutless move on Prust trying to jab him in the face with his stick. Chara should get a call as well look at the replay chasing down Emelin from center ice and hitting him with his back turned and then start punching away. Is that not premeditated? I could see the excuse Chara would give. Shannie I don’t know he was on the ice I thought it was Patches I was chasing down really!!!

I had a gut feeling we would win tonight.
I’m not one to believe in signs, but I live in TO, and this morning, while on my bike, I passed a guy clad in Habs gear, near Maple Laff Gardens.

I knew then, that the Habs were in for a strong showing tonight.

Can somebody please tell me why Galchenyuk has been demoted to the 4th line and played less than 10 minutes!?

    • krob1000 says:

Because he is a rookie who will have ups and downs and right now has been looking a bit lost at times…he also has the misfortune from that perspective of being on a very good team right now with plenty of depth. All is well with Galchenyuk…he is learning his time/space and the differences between junior hockey playing against 17 year olds to playing Stanley cup champions and future hall of famers every other night.
      The kid will be fine…

      • Habitant in Surrey says:

        …perfect explanation

      • hockeymaniac31 says:

No but he was fine with eller and prust then all of a sudden dating back to the Toronto game he gets put on the 4th line. I wonder if hes in Therriens dog house for some reason and we havent heard of anything about it yet. Cuz to have Moen playing with plecky and ryder doesnt seem right to me

        • The Juice says:

If you watch how he has been playing vs. Gallagher, then you need no other explanation…

      • Stevie.Ray says:

He may also be slowly given more responsibility. Perhaps more defensive zone starts. I want to see him make a really sweet play. Almost all of his points have been dirty or broken plays. I think when we see that first slick high light reel goal, that is when he will officially start rolling. I hope he, and by association Eller get more ice time. Maybe when Bourque is back Gallagher will be put back on his line, maybe. Gallagher appears to make everyone he plays with better. And to think he started the season as a healthy scratch.

Just got back to. the hotel after watching the game from the Garden. Took a load of crap from the Bruins fans when they were leading but it was sooooo nice to hear how quiet it was when we finished them. Of all the times I’ve come here to see the Habs, this was the fewest number of red shirts I have seen, We were outnumbered but not outclassed. Great win. Thanks for the W. It was great. Drinking victory beers tonight!

  20. H.Upmann says:

The best way to unhinge the Bruins is to make them remember how bitter they are about the Canadiens…

  21. Stevie.Ray says:

Last year I made a list of why the season had turned out the way it did. It included:
-Important players underperforming (Cammy/Bourque, Kaberle, Gomez, Kostitsyn)
-Leading the league in injuries (Markov, Gionta especially)
-Three rookies on D (Diaz, Emelin, Weber)
-And losing too many 1 goal games.

It appears many of these problems have been corrected.

  22. The Jackal says:

    So glad we won.
This team has character and toughness – we don’t need no goon!
For a moment I thought we would be suckered into playing the goon show, but we came back and won with skill – as we should.

Boston is an embarrassment to the game. They play so dirty, and it’s crazy that stuff like a stick to the face does not get called or reviewed by the league – it’s the league who ultimately allows this behaviour. Nonetheless, we won and did not let their goonery get to us, good stuff. I love that we came back in the third too.

One last thing. Boone had a comment of Chucky being lost, but more along the lines of wrecked. Chucky is awesome, he is probably over-thinking things right now. I trust MT will let him develop well. He has a lot of pressure coming into the NHL, 3rd overall, to come make an impact – which he has. He just needs to play and not over-think things. Gally on the other hand… man, what a revelation. A couple of posters had been pumping his tires for years on this board, and I’m glad they are right! This kid has no pressure, he was a fifth round pick and always played with the odds against him, and he is constantly proving that he is an NHLer. What a kid. We have two very special guys in Chucky and Gally.

This win made me bust out my special reserve… I just have a bit left, enough to share with friends next weekend.

    Go HABS GO!

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  28. TheLogician says:

so according to the human turtle, bruins should’ve come out of the chara fiasco with a powerplay, but didn’t b/c of habs embellishing??!! seriously, u can’t make this stuff up!

“The frustrating part is that you end up with 17 minutes in the penalty box when you should have been on the power play. It’s as simple as that,” Julien said. “It’s frustrating because tonight, as everybody saw, there was a lot of embellishment and this is embarrassing for our game, embellishing. Right now, they’ve got over 100 power plays so far and it’s pretty obvious why. We’re trying to clean that out of our game and it’s got to be done soon.

“It’s not about tonight. It’s about the game and the embellishment embarrasses our game, and we need to be better at that because it was pretty obvious when P.K. [Subban] gets hit, he throws himself into the glass and holds his head. You know what? If we start calling those penalties for embellishment, maybe teams will stop doing it, but until we take charge of that, it’s going to be an issue.”

    • HabFanSince72 says:

      He’s really gross.

    • krob1000 says:

lol…Seguin sure looked hurt…until about a minute later hmmmmm

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Embellishing? What did he think Seguin was doing? If Chara didn’t fall for his own teamate’s acting, he wouldn’t have got 17 min! But I guess everything is PK’s fault…even in Boston…idiot…

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

      • I just watched the Julien clip–http://bit.ly/YZPxEF He goes off on his embellishment rant at about 2:47 or so. Hilarious. Somebody should send him a pic of Seguin nearly crying on the bench after he went down like he was shot. We took twice as many cheap shots as they did and most were not called. Julien just can’t face up to the fact that we beat them on the scoreboard because we were the better team. The embarrassment to the NHL comes from allowing the biggest group of knuckle-draggers on the planet to succeed at thuggery.

  32. Adidess says:

I have seen Rask play a lot better than this. I think we scored a couple of easy ones on him tonight.

Which goes back to Price. Your #1 goalie will be outplayed by his counterparts on certain nights (no matter who is). It happens to the best of them. I supported MT’s choice to go with Budaj, not bc I don’t believe in Price but I thought he could use a game off to regroup and something needed to change after last night.

Not a big fan of MT originally, but hey every key decision he’s made so far has been validated.
