Liveblog: Still 0-for-Cunneyworth

The losing streak reaches five.
Scratching P.K. Subban and Lars Eller didn’t help your Montreal Canadiens.
Maybe nothing can.

What a difference two months makes: the Canadiens’ first visit to Winnipeg was their most lopsided win of the season.

What a difference a coaching change makes. Not.

Why wait, get a permanent replacement now! Fire Gauthier and hire Serge Savard already! Start Patrick Roy now!

  4. ZimHabwe says:

1 – Get Quebec City a hockey team NOW so Montreal can concentrate on building a Stanley Cup contender instead of worrying about the politics of language in a team that is part of a North American/International professional hockey league. That way, any disgruntled fan on the basis of language can channel their support in the QC direction; and so will the disgruntled media. This hockey team needs room to breathe.

2 – ALL teams go through a great depression. It is about time we went through ours. See, even if we rallied after December, we would still be aiming for a bottom 4 position in the East playoff contention. I hate to sound ominous but this was probably meant to be. From a lacklustre performance in the pre-season to the present, our team has been consistent in their weak performance. I doubt anything will change at this point. If we can live with that, then we will all be at peace with this situation. No rant or rage or fury or ire will make a difference. So I will continue to support the lads and I hope you all do to. Let them know that we understand that this is not their season but they have our support. That way, we can guarantee that they’ll do their best (whatever their best is) knowing we have not abandoned them

It’s a sad state when fans are pining for last year’s line-up.

The Canadiens have sucked for most of my adult life. That doesn’t bother me. It’s become boring and dispassionate under Martin, but the playoff runs were exciting.

I don’t know if I can stomach watching a tank season.

Also, why the eff was Eller scratched? His game of late has only lacked finish, and steady line-mates. If JM 2.0 wanted to send a real message, Gill and Cammy would’ve been eating hot dogs in the press box.

    • Agree. Cammy won’t try and Gill does not have the skills.

Scarey thought- Gill and Kaberle on the same team- didn’t help the Leafs make the play-offs all those years. But I would still take Kaberle over Gill – at least he has the ability to skate, stick-handle, pass and shoot- whereas Gill can only stand/crouch/kneel/lie in the way on the PK. Pretty limited skill-set.

The only player we have who really hates losing is Price. In all sports that I have played, when the losing does not stop I get mad, and at that point it does not matter who it is at. I know some people will say its being a bad sport but I dont care. I would like to see the kind of leadership on this team that calls out people that look too happy after a loss, and dont seem to go all out. I was watching the Jets players having a good time on the bench and wondered why one of our guys did not try to wipe their smirk off. The only kind of loss I understand is when I win something during it

    • Ferg says:

      Mr. Molson:
This mess will not be cleaned up quickly. We may have to bring Gainey back just for some stability.

Bring Gainey back to get Cunneyworth through the year and to get us through the trade deadline. Then beat the bushes at season’s end for some bench talent and GM talent. Very short-sighted to allow Boucher and Muller leave the organization. That alone should get Gauthier fired. If you knew the coach had to be French speaking, (and you should have) Boucher should have been offered the position. It’s called succession planning and good organizations practice it.

Mr. Molson, we are not Leaf fans (God Bless Them). We will stop attending, buying, and eventually caring about this team if it is allowed to continue to decline. See where a lot of your fanbase goes when Quebec gets a team.

Now, put on your big girl panties and make some hard decisions.

  7. GUNKA DIN says:

So the jackals have had their say and the coach is gone.
Kaberle is playing the way he used to, putting points up and doing his thing.
And the coach who took it in the neck? What did he ever do for the team.
He took an eighth place team and OUTCOACHED Bruce Boudreau and Dan Bylsma a couple years ago.
    And yes he stressed defence.
But the team can’t score, and Captain Kirk the power play coach is gone – replaced by Randy C and under him they were not scoring and now he is the head coach.

You got what you asked for, and its plain it wasn’t the coach.

Ask for a miracle trade why don’t you. As if there are general managers in the league stupid enough to go with your trade suggestions.

Wait for the team to arrive, maybe Markov will walk on any water that’s already frozen. Maybe a healthy team can be a better team.

All along I really didn’t have a huge problem with JM, It frustrated me at times how he made our youth get splinters on their ass for minor mistakes, but besides that I thought he knew what he was doing.
Now we got a guy who says his biggest coaching influence is JM

So I get to spend the next 5 days of my Xmas holidays knowing the Habs are on a 5 game losing streak and they just played probably their worst game of the year when I thought they would come out flying. Jacque ass’s protege didn’t look too effing brilliant tonight sending a message by benching PK and Eller. I think he got an answer he wasn’t expecting.

  10. durocher says:

Gainey and PG should apologize for what they’ve done to this franchise. Tonight was embarrassing, a new low. I feel very bad for Carey, without whom the score would have been 10-0.

The honeymoon for Kaberle is over — he stunk tonight.

Cunneyworth is not going to be the coach next season — installing him was a mistake (this is not RC’s fault, it is PG’s). As Mike Johnson said on TSN, RC is paying for PG’s decision.

Emelin got us six minutes of PP time, and we only mustered 1 shot on 4 minutes of them. Pathetic.

  11. NCRhabsfan says:

I didn’t watch. I knew what was going to happen. I am NOT going to let this spoil my Christmas. They couldn’t score in Boston, or Chicago, why would Winnipeg be different?

Now the boys get a few days off. A chance to reflect. Maybe that will help, maybe not. It seems to me this is bandwagon on, bandwagon off time. For whatever reason, this is not a good version of the Habs. Nothing is going to change that in the short term. The chemistry is wrong, or there isn’t enough skill, or they are too small, whatever, it doesn’t matter. The bottom line is, this isn’t a good team. But there are some very good players on this team and there are some players I hope will play for the Canadiens for many years. So, now we either decide to support them, with all the warts, or we abandon ship. Your choice, I’ve made mine.

To PG, RC and all the Habs, best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a better new year. May the hockey gods look favourably on you in 2012, and if not, may they bless your prospects with rapid growth and your scouts with the wisdom to make a great choice in next year’s draft.

And Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all the bloggers, I don’t always agree with you but you make me laugh and you love this team, and that’s enough. Have a great holiday everyone.

The shame I feel at the fact that Phil Kessel has as many goals as any two Habs cannot be put adequately into words.

  17. caladin says:

    The key now is:

PG needs to be forbidden to trade away any picks or prospects, and we should cash in what we reasonably can at the deadline.

Playing like this we could be in line for a great pick.

  18. SmartDog says:

I’ll tell you what needs to change. Molson needs to start listening to what people at HIO have been saying for YEARS!!! This team is too soft and too small.

PS: I just looked up ‘soft’ in the dictionary. There was a picture of a pillow, a wet noodle, and Chris Campoli.

Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

  19. deuce6 says:

You know what is killing us this year?

Trading Hammer, Spacek, Sopel, Mara, Halpern, Pyatt, Lapierre, etc.. for guys like Diaz, Nokelainen, Campoli, etc..

We had depth and jam last year…This year we are inexperienced and soft as diarrhea on a pile of marshmallows.

Yes, I’m a Hab fan..Wanna fight about it?

    • podbay says:

I agree. There was no explanation or anything for why PG didn’t resign Sopel, Mara, Halpern, or why he let Dominic Moore go. It’s gone beyond ridiculous. Every Hab has lost his scoring touch. It is a meltdown, and I feel just awful for Cunneyworth, who has nothing with which to work to make the team better.

    • DorvalTony says:

Sopel’s playing in Siberia, Halpern and Mara retired unwanted, Pyatt is the ultimate AHL calibre nobody. Why not look at Gainey Gauthier Martin and the big dollar players who don’t deliver instead of going off the road like that? Unlike the Halak miracle 2010 season we didn’t even get out of the first round last year. The pre season was an omen.

      “Okay, everybody take a Valium.”

    • RGM says:

Trading 5th-7th D and 3rd-4th line guys is what is killing us? Let’s be serious here.

What is killing us is having $23.35M tied up in 4 forwards (Gomez, Cammalleri, Gionta, and Plekanec) that have a combined 21 goals on the year. I hate having to lump Pleks in that group because I know how much of a workhorse he is, and I hate lumping the Captain in there because I know how hard he works, but these are the facts. A Mr. J. Toews in Chicago has 20 goals on his own for the much more effective scale of $6.3M. It takes four of our highest-paid players to equal the production of one of Chicago’s.

THAT, not some malarkey about role players, is why this team is failing miserably.

GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is probably not our year!

  20. kholdstare says:

They played with more passion for JM. I actually believe based on the past five games that some of them are pissed he got fired. If not pissed then some are lost. I believe the majority bought into the system, and when they were told that the system wasnt working, (midseason) they have no clue what to do.

  21. nova scotia vees says:

This time, no criticism for Price. He actually looked focused for the entire game…However….why on earth bench P.K. and Eller? If true that Gainey was with the team….what a scary thought. Is he still the puppet master…pulling both P.G and R.C.’s strings. Poor Cunneyworth. A disgrace and National shame how the French media and politicians have crucified him. I loved Red Fisher’s column on the issue.
As for the Habs…Campoli, Diaz, Weber…small and just plain awful. Cammy…does he want out or what? Actually, too many terrible players to mention…It is truly a disaster in the making…Now, if we finish in the basement and get first pick..will it be Wickenheiser or Savard. Just sayin…I’ve seen mis-management before. Sam Pollock and Scotty Bowman…we miss you.

  22. piper says:

if i was brian burke i’d be all over price this summer to sign an offer.

  24. habscout says:

Gorges couldn’t handle an easy pass on his backhand in his own zone from Emelin, just because he was playing his off position [RD]. While he’s not a bad defenceman, he’s Craig Rivet 2.0 & not worth a penny more than he’s currently getting. I predict he will bolt from the Habs as fast as possible, as soon as this miserable season is over for the Habs. Hopefully the Habs will find an adequate but cheaper defensive defenceman.

  26. alfieturcotte says:

Thankfully we have the likes of Kaberle, Markov, Pleks, Gomez, and Cammy locked up for next year. We sure need them to be competitive…..Fire Gauthier.

Next year we will have the most expensive payroll in Hamilton!

  27. dre1744 says:

Wow i don’t really know what to say!!!!!! This team is playng like it is in a Coma. On most teams the hardest working players are there best players… On the habs there so called best players are all prima donna’s and floaters. The only guy that comes to play 98% of the time is Carey Price!!!!!! But even A brick wall couldn’t save this team right now.

The Habs need TOO WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on a bright note it would be nice to get a top 3 pick!!!!!!!

You may want to think of using “their” instead of “there” once in a while. Also, this site has automatic spell check. Please think about using that as well occasionally.
