Liveblog: Flyers beat Canadiens 4-3

PriceSave

A very bad goal at a very bad time:
Eight minutes into the third period, P.K. Subban coughed up the puck to Jaromir Jagr and Andrej Meszaros beat Carey Price with a shot from the blueline.

A few boos at the end.

The game illustrates why there was so much PR about a veteran coming back from Europe to play for the flyers that we wanted so badly but many on this site called washed up veterans. However the reality is we need scoring superstars to save us now.

  2. Nobody says:

JM did not make the trade for Kaberle.

  3. HabsTrueBlue says:

What complete idiocy: “Subban coughed up the puck” and all you simpletons calling for Subban to be benched. Subban is a second year defender on a crap team playing top minutes against the best players. Despite this he manages to have a positive +/- (even with all the shorthanded goals the hab-nots have given up this year). As if Diaz, Weber, Emelin, Gill, or Campoli would do better against the best players. As for the winning goal tonight – open your eyes! Price coughed up the puck … Eller deflected it an instant before… at the last moment Subban diving onto his knees somehow managed to swipe it away from two Flyers alone in front of the net. Someone explain to me how that becomes Subban’s screwup?

    • billylove says:

Not PK’s fault. Price should take the heat for a cutesy pass that led to the turnover that started the whole sequence.

    • A. Berke says:

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking HTB
I had enough of asinine armchair quarterbacks and others (above!) who blame Subban (and Price) at every turn. People wake up this team is mostly below average and coached by a moron. If you want to blame any one blame JM for pete’ssakes.

In seven PP’s only one goal! how about scoring another one or two (esp on 5-on3) so that the game is not decide and lost by a goal everytime?

      Ali B.

  4. HNS says:

If you can’t beat the flyers without Donger or Geroux, you r crap.

  5. rated_R says:

Tippy toes, you got a problem with “Nos canadiens”

  6. Al aboo says:

Everybody says “JM has to go…………..” but who replaces him, boucher, muller, boudreau?……be careful what u wish for!

  7. Wops says:

    Cammy played much better tonight.

    • InPriceWeTrust31 says:

You must be crazy cammalleri played an awful game! we have had alot of shots but he played crummy , he needs to get his stuff together!!
      Quelle arrete de carey price!

  8. DickandDanny says:

Martin was once again simply out coached. An undermanned injured Philly team, playing on the road, beats our club in almost every facet of the game but most glaringly in the coaching dept. The pp with under two minutes left is a prime example. Martin always and I must emphasize ALWAYS waits too long to pull the goalie for the 6 on 4. No thinking outside the box is there jacques?…. nope not ever! And where was Leblanc in the third…90 seconds of total ice time for a guy who was buzzing all night and gets his first NHL goal. How to completely squash a young players big night, eh Martin, your a (can’t swear, right) joke. Get lost already. There is, ahemmm “no doubt” eh Jacques where the problem lies. In your stagnant brain.

    • Malreg says:

How did we get beat in every facet of the game when it was a close 1 goal game where we outshot the other team?

      • DickandDanny says:

Scoreboard, power play, penalty kill, face-offs, goaltending… ummm do i need to go on. What game did you watch? Two 5 0n 3 pp and nothing to show for it. All these situations were in some fashion related to the coach. If you took the time to read my post and those of other bloggers you would understand. Wrong personnel playing rediculous minutes and on in the wrong situations. Check out the pp unit for the 5 on 3. No DD and no Max. On, and on and on.

  9. Marc10 says:

I loved the crowd on the Leblanc goal. Too bad the guys couldn’t lift their game to take advantage of that energy.

I join those who are eating crow on the Kaberle acquisition. He’s been good.

This team badly needs a spark. They’re flat lining.

  10. --Habs-- says:

A friend has season tickets to the Bruins and and invited me because he knows I’m a Habs fan. He invites me several times a year and I think I may not go because i simply don’t want to be embarrassed. When do we start wearing bags over our heads. Sheesh!

  11. morivera says:

We played a good game tonight. Pleks goal shoudda counted. It would be a tie game then. We’re only 2 points out of 6th in the conference. We’ll be OK.

  12. morivera says:

Are you Mikhail Grabovski ? lol

  13. WindsorHab-10 says:

We’re not just picking on JM just for the hell of it but man does he suck or what? Cole gets called for being in the crease & the goal is disallowed, no reaction from JM. Flyers score a similar goal, it’s allowed & again no reaction from JM. What more evidence does ownership/PG need to realize that the game has passed him by, not to mention that we are the worst home team in the league.
Hoping to wake up in the morning with the biggest headline ever:
    ” JM IS NO MORE”.

“Hate the Ole song like a sickness”

  14. Ian Cobb says:

Mike– By the way, it was price that gave the puck away for that last goal. PK just swiped at it in desperation trying to get it out.
!st goal was a miscue by Emelin. Martin does not use his bench properly, played two lines until they were completely ineffective in the 3rd. Leblanc played only one shift. Players were spent and we took penalties when tired. A lot of the game we had 5 players all skating backwards as defensemen. PP is a little better but still not good.

  15. Al aboo says:

I think most people on this site cheer when the Habs get scored on as opposed to when they score!

  16. Dickie9 says:

Just put my Cammy jersey in the garbage…..I will likely retrieve it tomorrow but not tonight. Man is he bad right now.

  17. rogieshan says:

    TOI & +/-

    Leblanc: 4:21; +1
    Darche: 16:57; -2

    Enough said.

  18. piper says:

Perhaps we could deal Kaberle to Philly.

    • LA Loyalist says:

If we had Wiz under contract we could have, as I advised all summer.

      • Mark C says:

Philly wouldn’t have the cap space for the Wiz, unless a big contract was coming back to Montréal. Remember Pronger signed a 35+ contract; his cap hit does not come off the books. Guess that’s why the Goat is a GM in the NHL, and you just advise things on the interwebs.

  19. DorvalTony says:

Carey Price couldn’t hold a lead if he was an electrician.

  20. Bertuzzi says:

You can’t win, Philly. If you strike the Habs down, they shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine… as they get one step closer to hiring a new coach.

  21. Laramy87 says:

Wow the so called “fans” of the Canadiens are really getting on Subban. Give your damn head a shake. Subban is by far the best d-man we have on this team. He is 22 years old and is going to make mistakes. I guess what ppl dont realize is he gets the most ice time of anyone on the ice. I heard a stat on Tuesday night that mentioned he has played 45 total minutes more than any other d on the team. Thats a solid two periods and change more. Give the kid a break or you are going to run him out of town. These are the same ppl that were all over Price a few years back, and where are they now.

I dont care what anyone says, this was a good game to watch, yes the outcome is frustrating, but Philly is a top team in the league. It is also the habs first regulation loss in 7 games, like give them a break. I am not a JM supporter and agree he needs to go, but its not like this team is under performing. The habs are in mostly every game and have only had two games where they have lsot by 3 goals and nothing more than that.

I heard ppl now give Pleks a hard time, okay get rid of him and watch the PK drop. Best PK man in the league.

  22. Sharks9 says:

Hey, at least the PP scored again and Kaberle got another point! If our PP can get us at least one goal a game we’ll win a lot more games.

No joy in watching the Habs these days….Such high hopes, guess I expected way too much..

  24. rogieshan says:

Can’t win with just one line.

And I know he’s trying, but Cammalleri is making everyone around him miserable.

  25. twilighthours says:

I’ve all but given up. Makes the losing painless! You guys should try it.

  27. Mutt says:

That is the last game I watch with Chris F Lee reffing. Sorry that shouldn’t have an r in it it, he was just effing the game.

  28. Captain aHab says:

He’s blaming young guys again….how about blaming the overpaid freeloaders….

  29. TheMock780 says:

I’m one of the bigger Price fans out there but that last goal was on him, not Subban. Price made a terrible decision when he tried to pass the puck to Georges who wouldn’t have gotten to it even if he hadn’t fallen down.

  30. ZimHabwe says:

I don’t know what’s worse; getting a B- in one of my classes or losing tonight’s game.

  31. piper says:

Please trade Plek and Cammy right fu@!ng now. I can’t stand watching them anymore.

  32. Neutral says:

Beat by a better team – could have been worst – philly played hard enough to win – had they played harder – it would have been 6-3

  33. Sharks9 says:

We lost by one goal to the top team in the East. Yes they have injuries but so do we. Not like we were favourites to win this so no need to make a huge deal over losing this one.

  36. Jim Edson says:

I know the wrath of the gods is coming but……

There are whether 6,16,36 or 66 years old, smart hockey players and unfortunately PK Subban is not one!

He appears clueless to his situation on the ice, incapable of making the smart play always opting for the fancy high risk maneuver which often results in disaster.

What does the Commissioner of the NHL do?

In short, a league commissioner is the action man for the Board of Governors.

They tell him what they want done and he works to make it happen through his subordinates while making sure that individual franchises play by the rules.

******** Translated if you haven’t won the Stanley Cup in 40 years your NHL team is becoming irrelevant in a sports mad city long behind MLB, NFL and NBA teams, you just tell the commissioner(who you gave a new contract at 7 plus million per) to make it happen and the rules are bent sufficiently to action the command.

    • LA Loyalist says:

Ok, Jim. I take it you are 27 years old and live in your mother’s basement, but read a little history. Larry Robinson needed several years of careful nurturing and development before he became Larry Robinson.

Read “The Game”, read “Robinson for the Defence”, read “See Spot Run” -

then come back and post something less stupid.

  37. ponyboy says:

If anybody saw Lavvy on 24/7 speaking of what it takes to win its passion. JM does not have the personality required to provoke passion in his team. Kirk Muller is sorely missed right now. Time for a coaching change. Why was LL riding pine in the third?? Checkout the +/- of the ‘top’ line. Pathetic.

  38. zaq007 says:

We really need Markov back, people are jumping on Subban but also forgetting he plays the most minutes on the team! He’ not the dman you want to be doing that but there’s nobody else for the top pairing. So if he has some brain farts or turnovers I think it’s just cause he’s playing too much!

  39. HardHabits says:

The good news for Habs fans is that when Markov is back and the Habs have Gomez and Gionta they will then be a Stanley Cup contender. You know. Once you make the play-offs anything can happen.

Plex, Cammy, Gionta, Gomez, Markov, Kaberle. Now that’s a championship core if you ask me.

It’s 33 million dollars of cap space well spent.

No need for the Habs to worry because they can easily sign Price, Eller, Pacioretty, Gorges, Kostitsyn, and Desharnais for under 31 million give or take a few cheap utility players.

There are 5 Habs prospects playing this WJC’s. The Habs can trade some of those for a goal scorer who can help this team now.

    Contracts are fluid after-all.

  40. Its time for JM to put Cole – DD – Patches on the PP when this team has anymore 5 – 3 PP. End of story. Cammalleri and Plekanec cannot score and the chemistry is gone sour. Put someone in front of the net and force them to put a D to cover him. That creates more open ice instead of trying to find the opem man for a good scoring chance. What was the PP for tonight? 1- 9?

Chris Lee is a JOKE. Why is he allowed to REF against the Habs? Its beyond me. I had enough of this crap and never seen such bogus calls going against the Habs in this game. Game 1st star is the one and only…….Chris Lee.

  41. novahab says:

Well I am going to bed love to wake up hearing Roy is out new coach.

  42. habstrinifan says:

WOW! Boone says P.K ‘coughed’ up the puck on the 4-3 goal. He dove and made a desperate interception after the puck was played straight to a flyer by Price.

    MacKenzie called it.

All in alla hard game to lose, but not a bad game to watch. I didnt see the last few minutes as I was called away so cant comment on the habs last PP.

  43. The Jackal says:

I think that call off the goal was bs especially after the flyers scored a similar goal that the refs allowed. Not saying that was the game, this team is suspect in a few areas, but man refs wtf.

  44. novahab says:

Maybe Markov is healthy he just doesn’t want to come back to this team and especially this coach.

  45. HabsFanInSaintJohn says:

Another painful display out there by our boys….JM has lost this team, they have zero faith or confidence left in him or his system and its very apparent….Im done watching games for awhile….this is the worse ive ever felt for any team or coach…damn shame whats happening to this great storied franchise…

    • HabsFansince49 says:

I left this site a few weeks ago because i was tired of ranting about the Montreal management. I just popped back in and the ranting continues. Scream as much as you like folks about Martin. Geoff Molson is laughing at you – his product is beer and chips and bodies filling expensive seats. The product on the ice is irrelevant. Scream on! No one is listening in the power halls of Hab land

      • HabsFanInSaintJohn says:

Sad but VERY true…the only way the message will get through to them will be boycotting home games, though I think we all know that probably wont happen..

  46. MTLCANADIENS says:

martin is a relaxed guy, we cant have that.. u make a mistake n he says nothing or benches the player… on the other hand if we get a guy like roy behind the bench wit grit n intensity he will put players on the spot for their reasons of mistakes

  47. Habbu says:

It’s gonna be all Carey’s fault if the Habs aren’t in the running for Mikhail Grigorenko or Nail Yakupov come the June draft.

  48. master says:

The Habs played their best, but as you can clearly see with all the under coached players(missed scoring chances) their best isn’t good enough..Sure they could win a couple against mediocre teams but against a winning team they will be out coached and out scored every time.

  49. Habfan4lfe says:

Philly had more penalties than us. Don’t blame the ref.
Philly has 10 rookies in their lineup.
Richards was injured as well as many others.

I and many others know where the problem resides and it ain’t the players fault. It wasn’t Pearns fault either. This team needs a new coach with passion and a drive to win. Not some stuck-in-time zombie who writes in his notepad. Hey JM you cheap b@$stard! Instead of a notepad get a iPad! You may not listen to the radio or read the newspaper but pick up a Future Shop magazine and look up iPad2 or Samsung Galaxy! G0d sakes…

  50. RJ says:

Who is in charge of pp? How about TRYING SOMETHING, like putting PK up on the power play???? Or Gill screening the goalie. DO SOMETHING FOR GODS SAKE!!!!

“My face is my mask,” Gump Worsley

  51. slapshot777 says:

Subban, has to be benched. It’s that simple. Every game he is good for three to four turnovers. I mean seriously you shoot the puck the length of the ice with your team changing and no chance of preventing an icing with seven seconds left in the game. If you haven’t give up on the game then I don’t know what he was trying to achieve.

Price also has to stop playing the puck up the middle of the ice. It was basically his fault on that fourth goal. He had no one to blame but himself on that one. When these plays do happen Subban seems to be always in a position to make sure the opposition always get a good scoring chance.

Someone has to make sure Lee never refs another game in Montreal, but preferably no more in the NHL. He basically with that weak call on Plekanec helps the Flyers kill two minutes off the clock. You can rest assured that if that play was reversed and it was a Flyer who did that to a Habs player it would have gone uncalled. I would bet my paycheck on it.

  52. WindsorHab-10 says:

4 mistakes resulted in 4 goals for the Flyers. Tired of the dead wood on this team a la Plekanec & Cammalleri. Only time they’re noticed is when they’re in the penalty box. Subban needs to play a lot smarter because his carelessness cost us tonight as well. The Habs deserved a better fate.

“Hate the Ole song like a sickness”

  53. Nina76 says:

Good for Louie Martin afraid he might make our millionaires look nuts, way to go Martin…………..Wish we could get rid of you………………Markov will not be back he will play in his own country you can be sure he has something in mind, too fishy for me

  54. Marc10 says:

The Habs just don’t want it as bad as the Flyers. I think it comes down to that.

    Philly deserved it.

  55. novahab says:

JM has lost this team anyone can see that we need a coach. We need the Saint If Roy is behind the bench the first thing he does is grab Cammy in the dressing room and lays him out. Then he will tell the rest of them to show up play hard or deal with me.

  56. MTLCANADIENS says:

Cammalleri doesnt show up tonight! come home from work and see 1/7 on the pp, then at the end 1/8.. terrible, when u only score 1 goal on the pp, u know ur not gonna win…

need to have a talk with cammalleri’s father.. very close friend to my uncle

  57. Habsbill24 says:

Yet another miserably coached game by Martin. Overuse of Darche, underuse of LeBlanc, overuse of AK, Pleks and Cammy on the powerplay. Max Pac underused on the PP. This is painful to watch, game after game.

  58. solsub says:

Forget the coach, this team just sucks.

  59. Muckbringer says:

glad our boys tried to fight it, was a great effort!!!
    im farming wood in skyrim….

  60. Your Mom says:

Flyers can pat themselves on the back and send gifts to Chris Lee and Plekanec for that one… Just in the first period Pleks missed defensive assignment cost us the first Flyer goal and he couldn’t score on his breakaway….I guess he redeemed himself with gutless forechecking and that late high sticking penalty

  61. tony d says:

A very good team just showed us what a mediocre team we have.
Our D were just bloody awful…PK is just giving the other teams chance after chance. Bad reffing aside, our defensive coverage has been our Achilles heel for years and is getting worse.

  62. gumper says:

Well, we didn’t lose 5-1. That’s all I got. Hope Pleks and Cammi get a positive result from their cranial-rectal inversion surgery. Could use a couple of the vets to step up about now.

  63. novahab says:

Foe God sakes Molson tell PG to call Roy and lets get a GD coach behind the bench. This is no team half the guys are not even showing up.

  64. topher5468 says:

Anyone think a real playoff team might want Cammalleri, he’s just awful and is the new Gomez. Fu-k. I hate losing to the flyers

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  65. piper says:

Habs are just a bad team. too much money tied up in useless players like Plek, Cammy, Gomer, Gionta, and Markov.

  66. 1973Habs says:

At least we showed some interest in the 3rd instead of going to the 1-3-1. That’s a positive.

  67. Habfan10912 says:

This coach is now losing players. Pleks and Cammy. More to come.

  68. The Dude says:

That was our best team vs Philly who’s missing TWO GREAT PLAYERS! FORE!

  69. Bozo McBozo says:

This team is just not good enough to do any better than just get into the playoffs on the last night of the season and go right out in the first round. Please get a coach that can motivate these guys. JM just can’t get ‘er done!
