It’s a little weird. You are either responsible for your stick (keeping it down, holding it tightly) or you’re not. Can’t have it both ways. I remember always being on the 6 year olds “hard on your stick”.
The NHL guys should be competent to hold their sticks tightly. I don’t want the NHL to turn into euro-weeny soccer, where every play is a dive.

A slash shouldn’t be called unless the opponent’s stick breaks. Otherwise a player can hold the stick lightly and allow it to be knocked out with a tap.
