Vigneault has a stacked team, NHL awards are not very kind to coachs with that situation because you’re expected to do well. I’d say Bylsma is the favourite for keeping the Pens alive missing two superstar players.

Having two 40-goal scorers and leading the league in Goals can help offset a defensive issue by outscoring your competition when the D is weak. PIT has had to grind out a ridiculous number of games to compensate for loss of their scoring stars.

Since Crosby went down Pittsburgh is 22-13-5. Since Malkin went down a month later they’re 14-10-4.
I’d argue that that’s precisely the kind of record you’d expect from that roster – slightly overperforming, but likely to return to the mean over the course of a season.

Pittsburgh’s record without those two, (or more specifically without Crosby) actually SUCKS by today’s NHL standards. Taking away shootouts and just going with actual hockey game results decided by hockey teams, the Pens are 15-17 since Crosby went out, 2 games under .500 even the Leafs are MUCH better over that time frame by comparison. Bylsma didn’t manage to do all that much without Crosby, Martin did a heck of a lot more with a heck of a lot more issues to deal with (like his entire blueline getting injured and his top scorers not scoring the second half of the year).
