We’ve played 1 home game, and I’m still waiting for hockey to return to the Bell Centre. When do we get to see hockey?
@ BOON
HA HA HA!
“Don Cherry hasn’t made any similar comparisons – probably because he thinks Hitler is the guy in goal for the Anaheim Ducks. But give him time.”
Does Havlat still play goal?
So I was watching the video posted there, and it has in it a copy of Price destroying Subban with a hit after the OT win at the end of the season. I remember, right after the game, seeing a locker-room interview with Price where he says, with a goofy grin on his face that he ‘buried him’.
I can’t seem to find that clip anymore. Anyone know where I can find it?
You mean this one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alyu-YoT68A
Sorry, I wasn’t clear. I’m looking for the interview where Price says that he ‘buried’ Subban, and not the hit itself.
Does anyone know if RDS2 will be available to Rogers subscribers in the Toronto area? I heard this new network will be rebroadcasting all Montreal Expo games from 1969-2004.
Not anytime soon. Currently negotiating to obtain the broadcasting rights. Last time we went through something like that, was the introduction to tsn2 and that took months to finally get those rights. I’m an employee so if i hear anything more definate then “we’re working on it”, I’ll let ya know
I’m currently listening to Hockey Central on Fan590 radio and Jacques Martin is a guest and I can’t think of two men who love each other more than Martin and Doug MacLean. JM can’t get through a sentence without giggling because of Mac’s jokes. It’s so unbelievably odd to hear him happy and it only ever happens when he’s a guest on Hockey Central when MacLean is hosting. Telling old stories when they used to work together. It’s actually very amusing and pretty strange.
You’ll never hear a more candid interview with Martin than when you listen to him on Hockey Central.
Yes I heard it on my Iphone and recorded it, I thought this guy was not capable of sounding happy but he is having a ball. I was going to post it here but I am not sure of the rules since it is Sportsnet590 content. Nice McLean a big Hockey guy and had no idea who Diaz was.
Can anyone confirm that Markov has suffered another injury, possibly to his shoulder, while skiing in France?
–| Brad Marchand | Starley Cup Chanpiar 2011 |–
Wow… that looks nasty. Hope he’s back in time for the playoffs!
Looks like he could use a few lessons.
Unrelated question: any francophones out there?
I’m writing a thing for work and used “Bonne chance” in reference to applying for our office in Paris (it’s in English, just added the French phrase for fun); however, someone at work was saying that it’s more of a Quebecois phrase though. Apparently, bon courage is more commonly used in France.
Anyone know? Realize this is totally unrelated to the Habs, so feel free to ignore.
Thanks!
Bonne chance seems better to me, it’s just like saying good luck.
Wishing courage, well it entails there are gonna difficulties ahead, no?
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
That’s what I thought. Just needed some confirmation. I’ll let my editor know that we’ve overruled her
Thanks!
One is very passive (Bonne chance) and shows a receptive attitude. The other (Bon courage) shows a more active, challenging and aggressive response.
Either depends on the context.
Some will even include both: « Bon courage à certains, bonne chance aux autres! »
If you foresee working with them, you can always say:
« Au plaisir de travailler avec vous. »
That’s great, thanks so much. I think for the purpose of applying for a job bonne chance would be more appropriate then — don’t want it to seem like they’re about to embark on a challenge or anything.
Thanks both for your help!
Forget Giroux. In the following year Philly committed an even great heist when they selected homeboy (Boucherville) Kevin Marshall two spots before Montreal’s turn. Montreal was left with meager pickings and ended up wasting a pick on some kid named PK Subban (anyone know if he’s still in hockey?) Oh to have Marshall and his 23 points in 153 career AHL games.
Cherry is not a censorship issue. He has the right to say what he wants (more or less) on a soapbox in the park or wherever. But broadcasters or the public have the right to set the criteria for what is appropriate for their particular airwaves. True censorship has to do with politics and boards etc and not with private or even public corporations deeming what is acceptable within their domains. It’s kind of like HIO moderating comments. It’s their site, and they get the final say.
Also, censorship and libel are two different things. If the players do decide to pursue action (I doubt they will), than it’s up for the courts to decide if their reputations defamed by Cherry to the extent that it would have an effect on their standing in the community or work life.
If the courts deem that they were…the CBC, as the medium that broadcasted the libel, is on the hook for it.
But to your point, I totally agree. The CBC has standards that they continually lower for Cherry and it’s shameful. It’s definitely not censorship to say this doesn’t accord with our standards of journalism or values

12:01pm ET: Markov on his second crantini. He’d better watch out; one more, and he might not be able to make it down the bunny hill without undoing the good doctor’s work.
Markov’s a Crantini drinker?!!!
Oh man, we’re in more trouble than I thought….
Absolutely. Didn’t you see the post below that linked to the photo of Markov in the airport wearing women’s sandals? Talk about your proof!
My buddy just sent me the proof of Andrei skiing, worst part is some Flyer fans are chasing him down the hill, I am worried about the guy.

Claude Giroux is really starting to come into his own. I think he could be in contention for the scoring title if Crosby is delayed returning to action. To think the Habs picked 2 picks ahead of the Flyers in 2006. The french media would have treated him like Richard, Beliveau, Lafleur and Roy rolled into one, they’re so starved for a francophone star. Who did good old BG pick instead……….Well, the one David Fischer! Along with the Kostitsyn year, BG’s biggest first round mistake.
I for one am shocked you brought up the fact we could have had him.
Well, that and paying for Andrei Markov’s plane ticket to France.
Claude Giroux is a fantastic hockey player. I have him in my hockey pool and I’m confident he’s going to perform above my expectations, especially with the increase in opportunities he’ll have with Carter and Richards gone.
He could be top 10 in scoring this season, but I can’t see him seriously contending for the art ross.
I won’t even bother diving into the “what if” scenerios associated with past drafts. Hindsight is 20/20.
and up until some of last season and now, no one heard of him. The joys and pains of drafting is you never know what you’re gonna get. Some fans understand that, but most don’t. It’s the difference between knowing hockey and just talking it.

everyone who followed the Q had heard of Giroux before the draft.
Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.
Yarp!
I’m willing to bet those same people were very familiar with James Sheppard too (taken 9th overall in 2006 and yet to score more than 5 goals in a full nhl season).
Nobody follows the Q!
All thirty teams in the NHL could have had PK. Same with that kid Gallagher that everyone’s ranting about these days.
Pacioretty at 22nd…
The Wild picked Bambi Pouliot before Price.
Every team gets their diamond in the rough. Drafting isn’t a science, and Fischer was a big defenceman who skated well (McDonagh is a case in point that Minnesota ‘Mr. Hockey’ players aren’t necessarily a wasted pick). He didn’t pan out.
You want me to go over the names of defencemen picked before PK in his draft year?
All those Kids in Philly playin with there Idol….lol. Watch out for Philly this year.
Your hair’s on fire.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
Where’s good ol’ TornApart when you need him?
Giroux is great, but, he is proving his greatness in Philly. No one can know for sure how he would have done here in Montreal (couldn’t have been worse than Fischer, that much I’m sure we could all agree on.) I’m thinking he wouldn’t be the same player though, being that Montreal doesn’t seem like the greatest place to play if you are French Canadian, IMO. With all the pressure from the media, it must be hard to focus on your game. I remember Latendresse, in his first or second preseason with the Canadiens, looking solid, and having everyone chant “GUI GUI GUI” reminiscent of “GUY GUY GUY” (Lafleur, not Charbonneau.) Along with all the media hype being a bigger guy, and the next greatest thing to come out of this province, showing flashes of potential, comparisons to Habs legends, etc etc. Well, we all know how that turned out. Leaves the pressure cooker that is Montreal, lands on the Wild, has a great, if shortlived first season in Minny, and has floundered due to some awful luck with injuries. The point being, no pressure there, no comparisons to great players of yore, and no being mounted on a pedestal simply because of what language he speaks had taken away all the distractions, and allowed him to play his game…
Ryan White better get here soon…
Has there been an update on White? I didn’t think his injury was that serious….definitely want to see him back soon
last I saw he was out indefinetly
Could be awhile he was seen on the chair lift with Markov somewhere in the Alps.
hahaha

At least waterskiing season is over, so there won’t be any more of that.
Can someone clarify something here?
The rampant rumour mill here (on HIO?…..NO!) has Markov skiing in the Alps.
If there was one thing that is more demanding on the knees than playing hockey, it’s skiing.
I don’t see how the organization can allow this.
I’d like to see some proof.
Proof : it was posted on the internet, and then it got reposted on the internet again.
So the internet is backing itself up.

What kind of a proof? It’s a proof. A proof is a proof, and when you have a good proof, it’s because it’s proven.

Oh you just need to look harder Bripro.
Thanks HB, but I think I’ll let someone else do the leg work.
Get Chrisadien on it, this kid can work, multitasker as well.
@BriPro. The only knee in danger is yours buddy, from the leg pulling going on!
Pretty sure it was just a joke. Actually, I’m positive it was a joke.
I’m not positive that it’s a joke. After all, there’s precedent.
It’s also been verified by unnamed sources. And posted on the internet.
That was Vladimir Markov. I mean Malakhov.
So what you guys (girls – equal opportunity) are all saying is:
This is a spoof with no proof, and I was suckered in like a goof!
Have any proof of that?

I remember posting before we signed and after we sighed AM that we should have signed Wiz instead because we did about the condition of AM’s leg and if and when he would come back. Now we have no Wiz , no AM (and I believe he will not return to his former self and if he does after one game vs. the Broons he’ll be gone again). I realize PG was is a no win position. If AM came back and played great and we have him signed he looks like a genius. If he does not come back he looks like a fool. I guess that’s why they pay him the big bucks , however PG should have gone back into our recent history with players who injured their knees/legs in their UFA years. We never re-signed them ( amid howls of protest on this site) and I don’t believe any of the players had a good sesaon next year. SS, KOMO, MS, AT to name a few.
Mr. Biter
I wish I had known there was people clammoring at the time to sign Wiz instead of Markov. I had no idea that concept was being floated, and I for one would have loved to jump on that bandwagon at the time. Alas it is too late for me.
Don’t worry, Markov is already skiing again so it can’t be long now until he’s in full contact practices!
–| Brad Marchand | Starley Cup Chanpiar 2011 |–
If it’s any consolation The Wiz has not played a regular season game yet. Not only has he had the knee injuries, but he is a repeat offender in the eyes of the NHL.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
So what if you want to get “shoulda coulda woulda” on the situation the Wiz wouldn’t be suspended because he wouldn’t have played that game.
I realize that’s ridiculous but it is true
It’s fine, I love ridiculous and true stuff!
Also it’s mostly amusing to me how people clamor for the Wiz and they had such similar injuries, I know Markov got it slightly worse but still, Wiz is proof that such injury can be overcome.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Difference being the Wiz recovered and is playing *now*. I won’t lie – I’m done with having injury prone seasons and I want some success now rather than waiting for our current rising stars to leave us for a better team.
Get rid of the deadweights, the overpaid has beens and the injury prone. I want to watch some hockey without having to resort to “well of course the habs lost, they are missing their top d, top 6, etc”. It’s pathetic really. No more excuses.
There’s some hope for next season.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
You know who else constantly hopes for next season? Leaf fans…
Well what can I tell you? It’s not like PG can shake up the team during the season. Can’t get rid of the deadweights right now, they still have contracts, and who would want to trade for deadweights?
The overpaid are still on contracts, and I keep being told sending player x into the minors would demoralize the team.
You’re in for a long season with that attitude.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Wiz at 6Y/33M is a joke, I love Wiz, and wanted him when the Ducks wanted to get ride of him, he is a number 3 D-men that needs to play with a good defensive men to be effective. He has also had 3MCL/ACL injuries the same knee, and with his aggressive style, he is more likely to hurt it again (he re-injured it in a fight once). I’ll take Markov at 5.75 3 years compared to Wiz everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.
Exactly. Bottom line: 6 years at 33 mill is far too much for Wisniewski.
I think it came down to Wiz or Cole with the $$
Case for Markov:
Long time Hab leader, perhaps helped to bring Emelin over, PP is #1 with him playing, came through MTLs system. + sign him long term, if he does not heal then they can replace his $$ opening up cap and an opportunity to Weber, Diaz and Emelin to play with Markov hurt.
The con…status of his knee / overall durability.
Wiz:
Tough, slick with the puck, booming shot. Can fight, massive point shot.
Con – wanted a LONG term, $$ could go to forwards, committment to him / level of play in 3 yrs?…losing Markov to a playoff team and having him put up 50 pts would result in Gauthier hanging. Also, signing Wiz would result in no Cole, and with 85% of the teams D in the final yr / RFA, you would lose an opportunity to see Weber, Diaz and Emelin with signifiacant ice time and opportunity to sign a FA this summer.
Molson Ex mon ami
Markov was one of the reason Cammy wanted to come here, and even if they barely got to play together, that’s gotta count for something.
Don’t know many players having The Wiz would attract.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Well not the next year but the first full year later Tanguay had 69 pts, Souray 58 and Komo had 10 (career high 19). Forgive me, but do you mean Mathieu Schneider? The guy who retired at the end of the 09-10 season at 40 years old?
It’s easy to shit on the Markov signing now when we don’t know anything. He’s a far superior player to Wiz, a leader on the ice and in the locker room, not to mention a life long Hab. The notion that PG has made a mistake before the dude has even played a game is asinine. It’s in the same league of absurdity with PG signing guys without doing medical background checks. This is pro sports. Millions of dollars. Markov is experiencing an unexpected set back. Let’s just wait and see how this year plays out. I am willing to wait for Markov and am happy to not have to sit through Wiz turnovers and his impulsive, aggressive, penalty taking boners.
JF
Update from France: Markov was seen enjoying a crantini at the chalet bar between runs down the double-diamond. It must be true because I read about it online.
If we post this enough, Eklund will eventually have to believe it and start posting on his website.
On a side note, my nephew is a big Leaf fan and he and his cronies are trying to start a big facebook movement to get Heatley voted as a First Team AllStar in Ottawa this year just to piss off the Senator Fans. I was quite proud of him, thought that was pretty funny.
If only I could have Eklund rip me off, I’d die a happy man.
Edit: Hmmm… for some reason this site won’t allow me to use the sarcasm tags.
someone had posted on TSN about the Leafs vs Sens….Every time of the 6 meetings this year that the leafs play the sens the sens have a game the night before. I didn’t believe it until I looked at the schedule. I think the League really is trying to get them into the playoffs.
Or they really want the Leafs to have bragging rights as the best team in Ontario. I would expect then that whenever they play the Habs we have a game the night before also.
who knows, I just know that is not very fair scheduling as that is 12 points to be had by the leafs playing a weak squad.
The NHL should never have games on back to back nights. If I am paying 300 a ticket to go to a game I should be seeing a team ready to go. Not a tired team that played the night before.
I checked the habs only play the leafs once on a back to back
I would love to see a breakdown of the number of back-to-backs for all the NHL teams and also the number of teams playing a team that played the night before. My guess is TOR and NYR get lots of teams on the back-end of a back-to-back.

I firmly believe if a back to back is nessesary then BOTH teams should be in the same situation. A rested team VS a backtobacker is BS and needs to stop.
My mind has told me that Markov is actually skiing the Swiss Alps. Lift tickets were courtesy of Mr. Diaz.
Apparently, Crosby has been cleared for contact.

If he is cleared for contact and plays well, I guess then that means the end of SHanahan and suspensions for head shots. The NHL can go back to being an Ostrich, pretend nothing ever happened.
Read closer. He’s cleared to wear contacts. He doesn’t get vertigo anymore from them.
First week and both Flyers and Colorado looking good off the gate funny thing both made major change
Flyers are the real deal.
Colorado has some good parts and are young but the West is killer, they have to beat out some good teams to make the playoffs.
Molson Ex mon ami
I wasn”t sure about Varlamov, but he’s looked pretty good for them so far. The AVs have to play well to lessen the blow of that trade. Giving their 1st RDer to WSH for Varlamov was very risky, it could amount to a top 5 pick.
I’m shocked by the Flyers. Maybe they will come back down to Earth soon. I didn’t even think they would make the playoffs this year….
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Dam Pronger. If he is healthy his team is in the playoffs.
Bryz looks good.
Giroux is great.
Simmons playing strong, Vorachek scoring…+ Briere, Hartnell and with Cotourier putting up points that is a good team. + solid D.
Does anyone have an explanation as to how the heck Toronto got Lombardi and Franson for Lebda and the other no name?
Molson Ex mon ami
I brought that up the other day. Ridiculous how one sided that trade was. In fact, it was a complete salary dump, and I actually think the NHL should have investigated it. Clearly Nashville had no intention of even considering either Toronto Player (Lebda and Robert Slaney, now with the Milwaukee Admirals playing for Capt. Kirk) and were simply undloading 2 salaries.
Any chance of a new goal song debut tonight? God, I hope so.

Sorry bout the typos, darn phone.
Any talk of Don Cherry being removed from HNIC is silly. It won’t happen, and moreover, it should not, at least not for the reasons being given. I don’t like him, so I don’t watch or listen to him. I won’t let my son either, because I want him to have fun playing hockey, period. But it’s still a free country and people can at what they like, and there should be no talk of censorship.
Would I like to see him retire? Yea. He’s no longer interesting or relevant, and I seriouly resent the fact that my tax dollars support him in any way (which is the only valid argument that could be used to fire him) but he can say what he wants as far I’m concerned. I just won’t be on that channel myself.
Your tax dollars dont go to support Coaches Corner or HNIC in any way. It is one of the only profit making shows the CBC has.
If Cherry was fired by CBC he would immediately be hired by TSN. You may not like what he has to say but lots of people watch and thats what matters.
TSN is pretty stupid, but not that stupid.
Cherry is going senile and has trouble completing a thought.
Enough already!
Very clever reply G-Man. The I have my hands on my ears and I’m saying na-na-na-na-na-na very loudly argument. You win.
as long as people here, and for that matter everywhere keep talking about him, HNIC will keep him on the payroll, all it means is people are tuned in…If everyone stopped talking about him, maybe he would just go away!!!!
I’m pretty sure he can not say anything he wants on the taxpayer’s dime.
Well I don’t know if it’s silly. With free speech you can say what you want (within safety limits) but the flip side is you are responsible for those comments. With Cheery a few things have become very clear, he is ignorant of the facts and he doesn’t care.
He readily admits he doesn’t watch the Shanahan videos and when he mentioned baseball it was obvious he doesn’t follow it at all. I suspect someone fed him that video. There was a HUGE hue and cry to change the rules when Posey went down. And the rule may yet be changed.
So in one episode he said things that were patently untrue, and potentially subject to liable suit, and that he don’t even care if it’s accurate.
I don’t think he should be fired because he shouldn’t have said something, I think he should be fired because it’s painfully (for the CBC anyway) clear that he no longer has a clue what he is talking about, if he ever did…
From “Too many men on the ice” to “Too many words on the air”…
“liable”?

We’ve had some damn bad luck with D over the years.
Half of that is attributed to Markov on his own!
what was it that don cherry did that was so offensive, was it that the fighters in the league lead to drugs and alcholol?
Calling people hypocrytes, alcoholics, drug addicts…legally can be converted to slander.
Probably not the best thing to do to pick on people with drug / alcohol related problems. Hypocrytes was on the line and could be lived with…but throwing around addicts and alcoholics on CBC…probably not the best.
Personally, he is annoying and would rather listen to Roenick.
Molson Ex mon ami
that’s it? K i dont like cherry as much as the next, but I dont get why the whole blow up, ive been just ignoring it. but if hes trying to say we need to get help for these people and these players lead down that path well then , he right, even though he might have said it like an [edit]..again.
He wasn’t saying that at all. He said that Stu Gimsom, Chris Nilan, and Jim Thomson were Hypocrites and turncoats for being against fighting. Problem is Grimsom and Nilan aren’t. Never have been. Nilan has also said that he doesn’t attribute his substance abuse problems to his former job. Cherry’s statement are complete fabrications and because of the size of his platform the lies starts to become seen as the truth. Nilan has carved a public persona as a pro fighting, rough and tumble guy. He sells sticks signs autographs etc based on the fact he was atough guy with the habs. You paint him with a brush that says “He’s a crusader against fighting” and that messes with his image. It also sucks to be called a puke for something that isn’t the case.
Cherry wasn’t trying to help anybody with substance abuse problems. It was an ill informed rant on his part. A complete fabrication. You can find the link to the coach’s corner I am sure. Watch it knowing that 2 of the guys mentioned don’t actually believe the things Cherry says they believe and it becomes comical to find that he hasn’t simply said, “Sorry I had my facts wrong”
Excellent explaination.
Molson Ex mon ami
With Don Cherry’s tenure on Coach’s Corner in jeopardy, CBC will need to find a replacement to sit with Ron McLean.
He should be someone who has had an interesting experience coaching in the NHL, and preferably for the CBC, someone who has had bad experiences against the Habs.
Maybe it could be Michel Bergeron, former coach of the Nordiques, who with his French accent can get away with controversial statements claiming English is not his 1st language.
Or it could be Barry Melrose former coach of the Kings who can recount his nightmare of Game 2 in the 93 Finals.
There are others such as Mike keenan or Scotty Bowman…
Anyone have any suggestions.
“Yes there was a lot of noise in Winnipeg… but in Montreal, it’s like that every game!” – Brian Gionta
Jeremy Roenick! Or Guy Carbanneau!
Molson Ex mon ami
When this whole thing exploded, I wondered if the CBC would have the guts to let Mr. Cherry go, as he has clearly outlasted his usefulness on HNIC. I also wondered what they could replace him with.
The best I could come up with is a group of retired players and coaches discussing current events in the NHL, kind of like an Anglophone version of l’Antichambre. I imagined Wayne Gretzky and Denis Savard and Eric Lindros sitting around being asked to opine on the hot topics, but then I remembered that, as great a guy as Wayne is, he’s dull as beige. Maybe Brett Hull would be a better choice.

Did you guys hear Markov is skiing?
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
KNock it off!
Malakhov, Markov….same difference.
About time the Bell Centre will be happening!! I am going to be watching tonights game with pizza and wing yumm.
Okay since its the first home game of the season , its going to be rocking and Carey Price short one win to make his 100th win of his career is special. Lets hope the team in front will help him out here, because he sure does his work in net.
3 goals allowed in 2 games… even the suppose to be Optimus James Reimer has allowed more goals then him…
Carey Price #31
5+1 = 6 in 2 games as far as I can remember, anyway.
didnt he shut us out in Toronto?
Carey Price #31
OOPS-thought you meant Carey.
And this is why I believed he was signed for 3 years. I do not think that they will look to rush his return and do not expect to have him back in the line up this year. He will take the year off to rehab, go skiing in France, cross country run, whatever it is he wants to do so he can clear his head and pace his return.
Sign him for 3 years, pay his salary off the cap, and have him 100% next year. Thats my conspiracy theory.
Molson Ex mon ami
i think they should have signed the WIZ in that case if they knew this was going to happen
I’m glad you said that.
My theory is that it was either Wiz or a forward (Cole)
My wildcard “should have done” prediction – trade Spachek and sign Hammer.
Molson Ex mon ami
No one wants Spacegoat.
Just enjoy his videos, and think about next season, he won’t be here anymore.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Aye, thats the other thing…could they trade him. From what we hear is that he is very liked in the dressing room…+ he has been playing on his off wing.
I love someones comment on TSN yesterday in reguards to Spachek and his injury.

thats cool, I kinda knew what the word out there is, plus 30 players isnt a very big pool of players. but I was more curious if our DB level at the bell centre, is the actually the highest.
Yes. I once tried to mute my TV while watching a home game because the phone rang and my TV started flashing the word ‘Impossible’ on the screen.
Proof is in the pudding, as they say.
- Honestly yours
lol good one… RBC is carolina has gotten reads of 130 db
and chicago in the 120s
nothing on montreal
Eller should be back in tonight, pretty excited to see what he can do, seems he will be playing on the fourth on the wing, but I figure with JM holding the reins, he should be brought up soon enough.
Win 100 for Carey would be cool for the home ice opener.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
I’m not expecting much from Eller. Don’t get me wrong, I like the way the kid plays and I thought he had a solid rookie season, albeit not extraordinary. He does all the little things right, but I don’t think he’ll score more than 15 goals.
I have a feeling that the discussions on this site have embellished the expectations set on Eller. I expect him to be a solid 3rd/4th liner this year.
15 goals would be awesome for Eller.
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
Correct me if I’m wrong but if Markov is on LTIR – does his salary count on the cap?
Molson Ex mon ami
It doesn’t count against the cap. Also I mentioned below. “I believe Tony Marinaro mentioned that the Habs agreed to a 3 year deal not 2 because or something about insurance covering more of Markov salary if he has any injuries or something like that.” Every team has a budget even if its over the cap, so that might give PG a little more spend if needed.
Sorry, but the player’s cap hit always counts, but it can be replaced with other players to the amount of the cap hit of the injured player
In order to qualify for placement on the Long Term Injured Reserve a player must be deemed to be unavailable for 24 days and 10 NHL games. If that is satisfied, a player can be placed on the LTIR.
Thank you sir.
Molson Ex mon ami
A player expected to miss at least 10 games and 24 days due to injury can be listed as a long-term injury (LTI).
An LTI can be covered by replacement players, as long as the replacement salaries do not exceed the salary of the injured player.
If the replacement salaries would push a team over the salary cap, the team is allowed cap relief, but only for the portion of the salary that exceeds the cap.
When the injured player returns, the team must immediately comply with the normal terms of the salary cap.
Shanahan denies GM’s putting heat on him the cause of less suspensions. However, doesn’t confirm or deny if the pressue from Crazy Cherry is having an affect.

You have to know something serious is up with Markov.
You don’t send him an a +3 hour flight to Florida to see his surgeon for nothing. Something happened somewhere and the hush hush tells the whole story. If everything was clear, we would have a date of return

IMO, to go with the rumours, that he had water in his knee from training to hard, the Dr told him to stay off the ice for a week and come back, so if all is well I wouldn’t be surprised to see skating again soon, and if not, the Dr would probably tell him take another week off.
You mean something like a regular scheduled appointment to see how the knee is healing after the August Setback?
You should TM that August Setback…
There was no “August Setback”, Burly. Swelling after a 2nd operation is “normal,” as Markov said at the time.
But Marinaro said so!
We have great arthroscopy surgeons and rehab in Montreal. If everything was close to normal then no need for Florida. I bet he is down there to get scoped to see exactly what the problem is and that means more weeks or months off.
OMG.
OMG…OMG…OMG…

MacQuaid got his bell rung pretty good into the end boards last night and had to go to the quiet room. He didn’t return to play, apparantly in the Boston Quiet Room they have a tape on loop running of Chara reading Old Testament Genesis 5 Verses 1 thru 32, the begat chapter.
Does anyone know a website that provides Habs pictures of previous games played that can be used as a desktop picture of high quality… Last year, the web site of Journal De Montreal’s guys on strike was marvelous but it is no longer on… NHL.com is ok, but once put as a desktop it looses it’s quality…

It’s on the internet, too!
RDS is quoting an unnamed source at a local Poutine Shop about the skiing trip now.
Now if only Eklund could confirm it…
If you don’t grok it, drokk it!
I heard he slept with Ron Corey’s wife and Pierre Gauthier had to take him for a walk in Old Montreal and then he smashed into a telephone pole! Also, he’s been hanging with Russian mobsters and partying too much on Crescent street. It’s all in this Belorussian sports mag I’ve been reading.
Ron MacLean was on CBC News defending Don Cherry, but not very convincingly.

Chuck! Ya my brothers wife’s sister in law, was water skiing with him at the same resort. He is working on stretching the ligaments in his knee. His wee knee.
That explains the water on the knee, no issues then. Thanks for the update Ian.

I sure hope there was a clause in the Markov contract about him being physically able to fulfill his obligations to the team. I am not so sure that resigning him without some club protection was very wise.
And what was the length of his contract? 2 or 3 yrs.?
3 yrs
Yah, it was insane. I doubt there was such a clause, it’s not common.
And Gorges who’s younger and healthier only got 1 year. The optimism of Pierre Gauthier…. the only consolation is as long as he’s out long term he’s off the books capwise right?
————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
Maybe we should have let him go as F Agent. But if he comes back and plays like he has in the past, it just might make the difference to get us over the top.
That is exactly it….if we would have let him go we might be kicking ourselves for the next few years when he is still one of the top D men in the league. If he misses half of this season…oh well. We should still be in the playoff race and that is when we really need him
I believe Tony Marinaro mentioned that the Habs agreed to a 3 year deal not 2 because or something about insurance covering more of Markov salary if he has any injuries or something like that.
That makes sense actually.
Richard– I hope we get some more miles out of those legs of his before he goes down again. But first we have to get him on the ice again.
3 years
$5,750,000 salary and cap hit
Modified no trade clause
I watched some of that Philly game last night and they are going to be a tough team to beat. I think they will take the East .
Their young forwards and solid D core are pretty bloody good.
I hate philly
But the goaltending is still a question mark. Bryz has been a fine and capable goalie for a team that doesn’t exactly have a market spotlight shone on them. Can he handle the pressure of Philly? I mean, I realize that some people here are of the belief that if only Gainey had passed on Carey Price in 2005 we could have had Bryz for a song in 2007 when Burkie was giving him away, but will he be able to replicate the 42- and 36-win seasons he had there playing in an arguably tougher division?
———————–
GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is our year!
time will tell and I hope they flop but with the D core in front of him I think they will be pretty solid and tough to beat.
He can’t be any worse than what they’ve been using for the last few years. Even if he’s average they’ll be fine
7800– Ya I do also, right behind us my friend.
I agree Ian that when we have a healthy squad we can compete for top spot int he East. When we have Moen on the first line though and most of our D core down this team will really have to pull together which they did in the Peg.
Really interested to see how tonight goes. Calgary is not playing well. I think it may be time to dismantle that team shortly and rebuild. They were so good in that cup run against Tbay when they should have actually won but came up short.
I really thought they would take a couple steps backward after getting rid of Richards/Carter. If they finish 1st int he East I’d give Holmgren GM of the award.
They still very well might as it is early. So far it has been the Giroux coming out party. That kid is good
Atlantic division is very weak. Philly should finish 3rd IMO. Rangers D is very suspect and gaborik seems to have disappeared. Im not sure how the Pens will work out, Crosby done for a while and now Malkin is hurt again.

Article in the Globe & Mail read that Bettman is now putting heat on CBC re Cherry’s comments about Shanahan and “changing of the game”. With CBC televising rights contract ending next year, the CBC execs taking the Cherry comments a little more seriously this time. Cherry won’t change but the game is and the two no longer mesh……even if Cherry is considered “entertainment” to HNIC. The end is near!
Good riddance!
Interesting however the article only alludes to the possibility of Bettman putting pressure on the CBC. No direct proof or quotes. But it could be perceived as a shift in the CBC stance given the sequence of events and Bettman could have said something to them.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
None of the loud mouth know-nothings around here, ever get fired either. Both MNF and Hank Jr. (which goes for the CBC and Cherry for that matter) will continue to do well with or without each other and we will continue to hear mindless whining about coaches and management.

No, no he really didn’t. I don’t know how good your reading comprehension skills are but let’s break this down…
Boone says that he gets a feeling of utter revulsion watching Hitler’s German army at the Berlin Games in 1936.
Boone says that he gets that same feeling of utter revulsion watching the Flyers play.
That’s not calling Flyers fans Hitler’s army. That’s saying he gets the same gross feeling when watching two entirely different events.

It’s a bit over the top, isn’t it, though? I mean REALLY. I hate the broad street bullies as much as pretty much anyone (except Boone, apparently), but the Nazis/Hitler thing is a bit much. I remember what Boone was driving at- the dumbass mob mentality of fans driving each other to hate is indeed not a pretty sight- but the Nazi comparison was facile and Godwin-ish.
Boone was calling Hank Williams out for saying Obama and Boehner (sp) golfing together is like Hitler golfing with Netinyahu (sp). So Hank Williams is a know nothing idiot for comparing Obama to Hitler in that analogy, while Boone is ok for comparing the Flyers to Hitler’s Third Reich? Mm nope, not going to fly. There’s no problem with my reading comprehension skills, it’s comparing a hockey team to Hitler and all that is associated with him that leaves some to be desired. Trying to defend the stupid statement is just lame, sorry.
Oh don’t get me wrong, when I’m commenting about stuff on the Internet I hold out as long as possible before bringing up Nazis in any discussion (unless, of course, I am actually talking about Nazis) so I grant that it was perhaps not in the best taste to liken the dislike of the Flyers to the dislike of the Nazis. I personally loathe the Bruins much more than the Flyers, and I would only compare that relative to how much I hate Saddam.

GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is our year!
I think the Gazette editorial got it right about Coach’s Corner.
The best idea would be for a different opinion to be offered to the audience.
Why not add a 3rd guy to Coach’s corner who would be allowed to disagree with Cherry, while Mclean would remain neutral?
I know Cherry has a contract that entitles him to speak unchallenged, but that is where the CBC should step in, and negotiate a change in the contract.
If Cherry is so convinced that he is always right, he should have the confidence to debate his points against someone who disagrees with him.
Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.
I think Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail summed up MacLean perfectly. Dowbiggin, who worked briefly for CBC TV sports said MacLean has great talent, but he’s opted to take the easy route as Cherry’s sidekick. MacLean irritates the living crap out of me with his smug know-it-all attitude. One gets the impression that Ron believes he invented hockey.
In both cases, CBC provided the soap box for these guys to defame the players that provide income for Cherry and McLean, and in both cases, the guys they tried to destroy were given no opportunity to defend themselves on the same publicly-funded soapbox.
Shameful, CBC, shameful…
Could you imagine a shared coach’s corner with Bergeron and Cherry on together. Oh that would be entertainment.
Milbury would get work as a GM again before Cherry (or CBC) would allow anyone to sit in Coach’s Corner and call out his nonsense. Who would want the job anyway?
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

We would need someone that Cherry respects, and there are not too many of those.
Unfortunately it is impossible to argue with someone who completely disregards rational thought, logic and facts.
I’m sorry, but for your rumour to be accepted as fact you’ll need more proof than just a random post on an internet hockey chat site.
Nothing like some South Beach for rehab, doesn’t get much better. Take good care of him man!
It certainly gets my vote! But they’d need to set up a much longer air delay than 7 seconds, with all the “F***’s” and “Tabar***k’s” flying.

Don’t be silly. habsolutely is the one on the far left in the low-cut dress.
That, or a pretty hot chick……
Correct. Williams is only guilty of making a bad analogy as is Boone, of course. By the way in some places, being likened to Netanyahu or any Jewish leader would be far greater insult than being compared to Hitler. Iran’s leaders would probably have someone’s head for saying such things. Of course, apparently, saying that you’d like to kill GW Bush or rape Sarah Palin is all good. I’m rolling my eyes.
