It really alarms me that it’s always “up to Price”, because it means the rest of the team just can’t get good enough to be a factor and they need to be saved by exceptional goaltending all the time. This is a huge problem for this club, and its roster is good enough that it shouldn’t be.

Price played well – but the sad thing is he has to stand on his head for us to win. Jacques Martin is an offense killer – unimaginative, plodding. He rolls four lines so much that no player seems to be able to get in a flow. He doesn’t seem to come up with possibilities – like putting Eller with Gomez and Gio.
And – Gomez was an awful acquisition. He eats up far too much salary for a Number 2 centre.
I think we can turn it around, but agree with many here that Martin probably should be reassigned.

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery:
(1) Price played really well. He just got no support. He bears no fault here. This isn’t a Halak versus Price thing. Get over it. You hate the trade? Spew your venom at the General Manager and Management.
(2) The penalty to PK Subban was questionable. But before you start raging on him remember he’s a young defenseman and we have to take the good with the bad. He’s the brightest defensive prospects we’ve had in years. Be patient.
(3) I look at Tampa Bay and shake my head at how we let a promising coach like Guy Boucher go and we got stuck with Jacques Martin. It kills me. No more than the fact that Larry Robinson wanted to come here and coach our defense and we didn’t return his calls. Not like a Hall of Fame, Norris trophy winning, Stanley Cup winning player/coach could have done anything to help young defensemen like Subban, O’Byrne and others in the system. (Yes I’m still bitter about it.)

The longer Montreal keeps Martin, the more they hurt themselves. It’s a damn shame in a way that Halak hauled his sorry ass to the playoffs and then hauled him to the ECF. The right hockey move was to fire Martin in the offseason and hang onto Boucher or, at least, find a coach with an understanding of modern hockey.
Once again, the Habs’ goalie is making Martin look much better than he is. If Price isn’t stellar, the Habs are 0-3.
I’ve refused to believe that a team with the talent on Montreal’s roster is a lottery team, but I think it’s a definite possibility. At the very least, until the system changes, this is not a playoff club.

Just watched this game on my DVR:
- Price had another excellent game, that’s two in a row for him
- we’re giving up WAY too many shots, esp in the first period
- Spacek cannot hit the net with a shot for his life
- ice seemed to be a problem for both teams
- Gio/Gomez are still pretty invisible
- PK had an up and down night, the slashing call against him was total b/s
- the top line is back in playoff form
- our PP needs to be adjusted – perhaps replacing Benny with Eller will help, or using 4 forwards instead of Spacek

Boyd wasn’t tripped however, it was a good stick on stick. However, it was CLEARLY interference as he impeded to get to the puck.

At the speed at which the play with Laps and Downie evolved, I think it’s clear that Laps initiated the hit before Downie turns away. Yes, still a penalty, but not suspension worthy. It was more of a shove than a cross check, and it was way too late for Laps to stop himself.
Agree. Looks bad on the replay, but it was just a hockey play. Pretty soon guy’s will be getting suspended for looking at each other the wrong way.
That Penalty on PK in the 3rd was BS!! Staright up! Officiating overall was brutal! How the hell does a guy drop his gloves and not get a penalty.

There were so few players on the ice most of the time that it looked like Lou Lamoriello was coaching.

Orr was winning the fight and then Engeland absolutely cold-cocked him on the beak. Orr’s eyes rolled and he sunk to the ice.
I wouldn’t worry about the Leafs too much guys. They are playing great hockey at the moment but they are a team full of tough grinders that are overachieving at the moment. Thats not to take anything away from them cause a win is a win but once the skating teams get their legs back in the next month or so the Leafs are going to take a pounding. Leafs cant keep the pace up past midseason.
Kessel was out for a good part of the start, and they didn’t have Phaneuf and their goaltending was a mess. They have a decent team that will compete with MTL for the 8th spot…..
No one will take a run at Kessel, as for taking runs against MTL players, look at the way they hit PK….
That is true about how no one will take liberties with the leafs. Tough to acknowledge that anything Brian Burke does is a positive. We have some tough guys in the pipeline though I’d wait it out. Our team is gonna be better than a bottom feeder looking for a playoff berth I’m sure of that.

boucher and yzerman may be very good at their jobs, but let’s make them earn it before we give TB so much respect. I think we underestimate how important it is to have basically 2 scoring lines and 2 functional, high energy lines. Last year it really hurt us, not roling 4 lines. I think that it will make a difference this year, and guys like Pleks and Gomer should be more fresh in the third when we need them!

Why was o’byrne out there. yes he’s a solid hitter but one thing i’ve noticed over the last couple of years with him. he juggles with the puck, plays with it before he passes, giving the other team time to cover players or forcheck him. i can’t wait for Marky to be back so oby can sit his ass in the press box (sorry for my language)

Calm down…it is no big deal really…by us complaining all the time about CBC’s coverage it makes us appear to be the whiners much of the League thinks we are. Besides, it is a Wed. night, CBC rarely if ever shows a game and they did not show the home opener for every Canadian team. Also, the Ott-Mon game is the national telecast since Leafs have no game this Sat. And their coverage is bad only if there were no local telecast on Sat. night for Quebec and whatever other parts of Canada they decide to send the feed to.

I just read Red Fisher’s article in the gazette’s hockey inside/out. the man has to know when to call it quits, and that time has passed! I used to enjoy reading what he had to say but now it’s just a pain. He disses gomez for scoring only “12 goals and 51 points” but gomez put up 59. He also called Andrew Ladd (thrashers) “alan ladd.” I know he’s forgotten more about hockey than I know…but I also know that I know more about hockey today than he does. how can he make a prediction of who’s going to make the playoffs when he doesn’t even know the name of the players or the stats of the team he’s covering??
Red doesn’t bother to keep up with the times…not once did he mention in his article what Price said to elliotte friedman and did not give Price any sort of support now that Price said he’s going to be working hard. Red turns a blind eye to price’s consequent work ethic from last year and a possible increase in work ethic for this year. He just disses Price, saying he’s not good enough, and won’t be good enough (as per cracking under the pressure from last year, and receiving more pressure this year).
It’s time to hang up the old typewriter Red!
