Pacioretty, Gomez key Canadiens’ win

upload_feedback

The Canadiens finally broke into the W column with a thrilling OT conquest of the Ottawa Senators.
The Habs roared back from a 3-0 deficit keyed by two Max Pacioretty goals and an equalizer, in the dying seconds, by Scott Gomez.
Erik Cole cinched the win in the Shootout.

The Gomez line, with Max-Pac and phenom Brendan Gallagher, was the Canadiens best, with 19 of the team’s 33 shots – plus two posts by Pacioretty.

Interesting chat with  Dany Dubé after the game.

In addition to being impressed by Brendan Gallagher, the 98,5 FM analyst liked what he saw on the back end from Jarred Tinordi, Alexei Yemelin and Raphael Diaz.

Mark this down for future reference: A pressbox consensus is forming on Diaz:

He’s better than Yannick Weber.

Video of Brendan Gallagher:

Max Pacioretty:

Jacques Martin:

A fitting end to a very entertaining hockey game in Ottawa.

Filatov: Save

Wide

Max-Pac: Wrister shelf!! What a night

Spezza: Goal

Gallagher: Wide

Daniel F.: Wide

And Cole wins it!!

The Canadiens roared back from a 3-0 deficit, with Scott Gomez tying it up in the dying seconds with the goaltender on the bench.

And Max is back … big time.

Gomez was good, too.

And Brendan Gallagher did not look out of place with the big boys.

19 shots on goal for that line.

First of all: “phenom Brendan Gallagher” Yes! I called it boys and girls. This kid is gonna be an AWESOME Hab.

And second of all… I’m supposed to PAY to read one of Hickey’s articles. I mean, Hickey, you’re good but I’m not getting a Gazette subscription just to read a hockey story now and then. I put up with the ads on here – isn’t that enough? Ridiculoso.

    Duplicate post…sorry

I have watched all the games with Diaz in them. He’s great. He’s definately better than Yemelin, who looks very timid out there compared to his billing. Diaz is strong at both ends of the rink and for the most part makes smart plays. JM & Co. will have a hard time sending him down. Gallagher is also very impressive for a young kid. Habs future looks bright to me. As usual though, they still need that big centreman. Maybe at trade deadline or with any luck sooner.

Agreed. The ‘quist had his moments last night though. Appears beefier, more physical now. And Eller should take another step this year. He became a man vs. Broons in the playoffs.

You have two choices: Break Chara’s nose and win or grab your ankles and lose. There are no other choices. Make a choice.

So I didn’t watch the game, obviously MaxPac/Gomez/Gallagher had a good game. How did Gomez look besides getting the tying goal?

This Diaz talk is interesting. Sounds like we may have a stroke of genius finding this guy in Switzerland for nothing. I kind of feel bad for Weber if this means he is odd man out, but end of day it’s all about us playing the best players possible.

We may have some trade bait available or just simply have some depth at D.

Besides the fact that some just can’t help but take pot shots at Palin or Obama or Harper or Layton on a hockey discussion forum (or allude to trutherism for that matter) and although I’m not sure why anyone would bring up Conrad Black and George Soros, can we just talk hockey? If not maybe some folks should check this out.

Interesting comment considering it was the same one that the Swiss Hockey people were saying when Montreal signed Diaz last spring.
In Weber’s defense, Diaz is 3 years older but argument could also be made that Weber being developed in the OHL and AHL should be more advanced. It was one of the things that I was looking forward to watching at camp, time tells all. An interview with both on HabsTV.

I wore my PK jersey and I was sure he was playing but he didn’t suit up, that was disappointing.. (I still wore the jersey out afterwards and received a ton of props and barely any jeers). Gallagher is gunna be a star.. but Pacioretty was everywhere tonight. He stole the show.. other than the fourth strings perfect pass for the breakaway, that was huge,.. interesting to note, spezza on the shootout got booed harder than if he were in MTL or toronto.. id say 60% habs fans there tonight.
at one point i was sure spezza was gonna try and fight dumont.

      God I hope not.

I have no objection to giving up SK74 or Grabvoski for nothing even though it was obvious they had potential that could be realized somewhere else. They were poison. But the AK46 controversy is manufactured and about 90% the team’s fault rather than the player’s.

The major rational complaint that can be made about AK46 is that
      1. he is inconsistent both in effort and results
      and
      2. his salary is greater than his contribution

To which I would respond that
      1. this meme is vastly overstated and the statisical breakdown posted on the blog of one of our correspeondents last month pretty fairly demonstrated this
      and
      2. applies to about half the players in the NHL

I expect that if AK46 is given sufficient quantity and quality of minutes he will produce and will be either a candidate for re-signing as a UFA or valuable trade bait at the deadline if the decision has been made not to sign him.

I would be concerned about the whole Third line thing, except for the fact that playing with Lars Eller and David Desharnais could be great for AK. The main concern there is will JM play the 2nd or 4th line too much and squeeze out the 3rd, and whether AK will get enough time on the PP.

    • Mark C says:

Pretty much. Two goals, two posts, one shootout goal and a ton of shots (7?). He was really flying down the wing, looks like his straight line speed as even improved.

  27. Timo says:

What did I tell ya all about Gomez? Let the drive for 25 begin, folks.

    • Bill J says:

I’ve ridiculed your Breezer & MAB bandwagon posts in the past.

Oddly enough I want to jump on this bandwagon Timo.

Gomez was not perfect in his first game back but despite that, he still managed to play one of his best games for the Habs tonight. Him & MaxPac have better chemistry then Gomez/Gionta. Go figure.

  29. caladin says:

Why does the HIO app still show the score as 3-2 Ottawa?

  30. Gerry H says:

    Well, that was entertaining.

Man, was Pacioretty dominant. His skating was absolutely spectacular. The chemistry with Gomez is undeniable. Gallagher was a very serviceable Gionta-lite, but I am dying to see the real thing in action. This line will be very, very good.

Diaz was again very impressive. So was Yemelin. Who knew he was such a good skater? Very disciplined, too. I saw no sign of him being a dumb penalty machine. I think we are gonna really like this guy.

The Cole line was pretty flat, I thought. I’m afraid we had the other AK46, tonight. Pretty much invisible. For my money, the top two lines are fairly self-evident (haven’t they always been?) and JM should use the pre-season to let them gel and develop. AK will just have to bide his time until Eller can enter the line-up and fill out that AK-Larry-DD trio.

At about the midpoint of the game, some attention-seeking dork in a Habs jersey jumped up during a quiet moment to bellow “you suck, Gomez!” He got blank stares from fans of both teams.

That refrain just didn’t resonate tonight.

  31. JF says:

I’m glad we got the win, even though it doesn’t count for anything, but I’m somewhat concerned that our Achilles heel from last year, inability to score at even strength, is still there. We’ve scored one even-strength goal in three games (the tying goal tonight was with six attackers). Lack of even-strength scoring can be partially offset by a good powerplay during the regular season, but in the playoffs it will kill us, as it did against Boston.

How about we see what goes on when we have more than 1 of our Top 4 centres playing in a game first? Hard to generate O when you don’t have good puck distribution from the middle.

Or from the back end really, Weber had a tough night IMO, Yemelin is still learning the NA ice and getting to know the team.

      – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

      • JF says:

You’re right. We’re using only one dangerous line per game, and most of our forwards are AHL players. I guess I’m just being alarmist. The return of Pacioretty and the addition of Cole will certainly help when we need a goal late in a game.

      • HardHabits says:

Yes. Habs still can’t buy a goal 5 on 5 and haven’t been able to for a few years now. Even when they won the scoring race a few years back it was on the back of the league’s best PP. 34% of their goals came on the PP.

The difference with the Habs is their 5-on-5 game hasn’t gotten better and their PP game got worse. Fortunately their PK game is solid. Unfortunately they take too many penalties.

Just because the Habs won doesn’t mean I can’t dreg up some facts. If some call it trolling, so be it.

        • dhenry1234 says:

It’s not fair to say that the Habs can’t buy a goal 5 on 5 considering that we’re yet to see the real habs play. Who knows, habs could end up being one of the best 5 on 5 goal teams in the league in April. It’s still pre season and that’s not a fair assessment.

Everyone except for one other person was saying that it would never happen, its stupid, you need balance etc. I’d love to see more of it to be honest. You don’t need to keep them on the same line all game or all season. Maybe against different opponents mix it up a bit.

this is what I said back then. unfortunately I said this assuming PG would sign another winger. I don’t like desharnais playing wing, especially not with another small centre.

” I realize Cole most definitely will be given an opportunity to play along side Pleks and Cammy, and while its the obvious move, and does deserve a chance… Once Eller comes back I cant help but wonder what Eller could do in between Max and Cole. thats a line with some size that wouldn’t be easy to play against. In inserting Eller in between those 2, it slides Gomez out of the top 6, allows that plug Gomez to play against the other teams 3rd or fourth lines on a more consistent basis. As much as I don’t like the guy, he would be a great 3rd line centre. Its just to bad he’s getting paid like a first. Furthermore Gionta has shown previous chemistry with Pleks and Cammy so that line has shown it can work. Clearly lines get tinkered with game to game, period to period, even minute to minute. I’d just love to give this one a try. Wishful thinking more then anything. JM will never make that happen.
