Judgesgave;

First off, let’s play You Be the Shanny.

Gavel ready? Good, let’s go.

Here’s Max-Pac’s hit on Kris Letang:

It’s a tough one to call, but I fear Max-Pac will be slapped with a couple games.

And can’t you just hear the hyenas howling in Boston?

I would be ecstatic if the Habs were to draft that defenceman above. Alas, I fear he is too big for Pierre Gauthier’s and Trevor Timmins’ fancy.

  3. Exit716 says:

Pacioretty gets five games for the simple reason that Molson embarrassed the league last year with his outburst about the Chara hit. If you expect a fair and impartial decision from Shanahan you’re dreaming.

    • fosterch says:

The league is an embarrassment. How can you build a hockey team when you don’t know what rules they’re going to play by from one year to the next?

Shanahan has to stop listening to the Cherry faction and pick that hammer back up, like he did in pre-season. Hockey is never going to be a game for shrinking violets, not sure what he’s afraid of.

I agree with Patches’ suspension. But Malone should not walk just because Campoli was reaching. And Chara should have sat the rest of the season imo. It was voiced around the league that there was no way he could not have known what he was doing.

Of course the point would be moot if Gainey had signed Chara. But noooo…. He’s a foot too tall to play defense for us.

I also think Staal took Markov’s knee out on purpose. Anything else you need ta know??

Here’s the video of the Finnish league brawl.

Good times were had by all. Maybe Don Cherry can run a segment on next Coach’s Corner.

  5. Marc10 says:

Love the pic of the new D man we’re scouting Boone. I assume he makes a good first pass and will fit into the system… Swiss?

I needed a laugh after watching our softies embarrass themselves…

And can I just say I absolutely love how Yemmy channels Kasparitis and looks for the hit on every play. It might get him in trouble once in a while, but at least that’s one guy the opposition will think twice about when making a play.

    Go the Yemmy!

  6. Marc10 says:

I’d give it 1 to 3 games, mostly because it’s a hit to the head he could have let up on. But if you gave Malone nothing, then this gets nothing.

What do I think Shanny will give him…? 1 or 2.

  7. slychard says:

Saw a vid of Finnish league brawl on yahoo news last night, every Plyer dropped the gloves the instant the puck was dropped on face off…wild.

  8. NLhabsfan says:

I can’t see Max being suspended… It was close but if he is there should be an uproar by organization..but we never say anything.. Forget class of the organization… Nothing wrong with bitching a little!!

  9. Un Canadien errant says:

We can all see it coming. In my post last night I commented on the same crucial point that many of you have:

Max is no small potatoes either, but his physical play in the third period may get him in trouble. He hit Kris Letang with a clean shoulder hit, but the ‘principal point of contact’ seemed to be the head and he was left with a bloody and reported broken nose. I fear that Max’s hit will be adjudicated by the NHL. Brendan Shanahan will review it from every camera angle, in slow-motion, forward and backward, will interview all parties involved, take into consideration the severity of Mr. Letang’s injury, garner some advice from the sages at the head office, and will eventually conclusively determine beyond any doubt that Max Pacioretty is not a Boston Bruin and is therefore suspendable.

    ———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?

    • JERM says:

Well…well, we come full circle, I recall Malone’s hit on Campoli in the preseason where Shanahan’s reasoning for no suspension was that Campoli’s head moved from the time Malone was “committed” to the hit to the actual point of contact. As per Shanahan, the head was not the “intended” point of contact and only became the point of contact because Campoli leaned forward for the puck. He completely ignored the fact that 1. Campoli was engaged with another player at the time, 2. The principle point of contact was in fact the head, and 3. Malone has had a history of aggressive behaviour and suspensions.

The same points that were applied for Malone’s hit on Campoli could be argued here. Patches was not intending to hit the head when he engaged Letang, and the head only became the principle point of contact because at the last moment Letang leaned forward (position of the head move at the last second) as he was taking the shot. Throw in the facts that Patches has no history of dirty and aggressive behaviour nor has he ever been suspended or disciplined by the league and you tell me how he can be suspended.

Shanahan already set the precedence with Malone’s hit on Campoli. But I suspect that Shanahan will ignore all that and will suspended Patches saying that it was a blindside hit where the head was the principle point of contact. I would not be surprised if he gives him 3 to 5 games.

Trust me this ruling will once and for all indicate the disdain the NHL has for the Montreal Canadiens. In Bettman’s parity league there is no tolerance for the history and legacy of les Canadiens.

      • neumann103 says:

I agree with the Malone/Campoli comparison and posted similar thoughts in the previous thread.

I disagree about the motivation of the league in terms of anti-Habs bias. I think there is a clear bias in favour of special pet projects of Bettman et al (Jacobs the enabler, the Rangers as the home team of the head office, the Penguins and Capitals as the home of superstars who are supposed to win everything etc) but an anti-Hab bias is just a misperception.

After a strong start, Shanny is trapped by inconsistency, periodic warnings from above (see Lucic, Milan) backroom pummelings from the GMs (“Don’t punish our stars!” followed weeks later with “Protect the goalies…from our unpunished stars”)

I fear he will give MaxPac two games because that is the way the wind blows this week.

        “Et le but!”

        • JERM says:

I think Pet Projects is putting it mildly. I guess we’ll wait and see the ruling, but I am convinced he gives him 3 to 5 games. Again, nothing to do with the actual severity of the infraction

  10. The Cat says:

I think Max should get 2 games, but I also thought Lucic should get 3. Lucic’s hit on Miller was worse. All in all, Ive stopped being surprised by the league since the brass are even bigger morons than the players themselves and thats saying something.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

Somebody please sneak this into the notebook:

Next practice – line changes, followed by more line changes.

  13. Shane1313 says:

Considering Lucy had a hearing without a slap on the hand. Pac better come out of that with nothing. It was a clean hit, all shoulder, and Letang moved at the last second. At the same time the onus is in the player to not have the head as a point of contact.

The thing that bothers me, is the people who have no idea about hockey(some Bruins fans and others) will start talkng about Max and double-standards. When the truth is Max knows how important this stuff is and he felt horrible. I’ll support Max, he’s ma boy

  14. Danno says:

It’s always worse than we predict when it comes to Shanny’s Wheel of Justice.

    ________________________________________

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  15. New says:

Max shouldn’t have to hear the decision from Shanahan. Shanny should explain it to Campoli and Campoli can explain it to Max in the pressbox.

  16. Toe Blake says:

They should allow teams two substitutes per year when it comes to suspensions. If Pacs gets one, I would nominate Cammmy to serve it.

  17. HabinBurlington says:

I am fine with Max getting 2-3 games, because under the principle of the “new” NHL the onus is now on the hittee not to take advantage of a vulnerable player. Having said that, then for eff’s sake he has missed a whole bunch of suspensions since the last game of the Exhibition Season (Hello Mr. Ryan Malone!!!)

edit: Question to Boone, in the picture, which of the 3 is the new dman we are scouting?

  18. pierre lapuck says:

Max will get 2 games becasue: he’s not a Bruin, he’s a repeat offender (he attacked Cara’s elbow last year), there was no penalty, he’s not a Bruin, there was no push back from the Pens, and he’s not a Bruin.
Oh, BTW, Shanny is no different than anyone else in that job. Do what the owners say or look for work.

  19. nick says:

Are these the same Boston fans howling that there is nothing wrong with Lucic running over Miller? Just curious…

  20. JasonM says:

I still believe Letang saw him coming. The hit wasn’t a blindside and only hit him high because at the same time the hit came in Letang was taking a shot.

Could he had let up a bit before the hit? Maybe. I’d ask the same about Letang to keep his head up as he tries to dangle into the slot.

Oh well, maybe Max can be productive and talk to Shanny about the hit he got last season that broke his neck and all he got was “a strong defensive play”.

  21. Thomas Le Fan says:

Hockey play. Happens quickly. Letang is lined up and he drops his head at the last moment. If Lucic isn’t suspended for his steamrolling of Miller, I can’t see … oh … wait … not in yellow, black and white? Suspend his a$$!

  23. Laramy87 says:

With the way the habs have been treated by the NHL, I wouldn’t be surprised if Max gets suspended. However, I think principal point of contact is shoulder then kind of rides up to the head. There was definitly head contact in there, but hey so was Malones hit on Campoli and where was the suspension there.
I hope shanny looks at Maxs record, who is not a dirty player at al like does he even have a penalty this year, and makes the judgement there.
The game was a whole different story, and not first time in 23 games the refs just handed the other team the game, see game in New York. Such bs if u ask me.
