First loss when scoring first.

First loss when leading after two.

And let’s be honest: First-class effort by a very good hockey team.

  1. Chorske says:

I can’t remember Cherry ever saying a bad word about Iggy– or Byfuglien or Emery. And he has glowed rapturously discussing the many merits of Stan Jonathan, a full-blooded Mohawk.

The race thing is probably overblown. He may be biased wrt nationality, but I would agree that there is very little evidence he is a racist.

Maybe people assume he is because he kinda looks like Archie Bunker and Col. Saunders had a baby? 😉

  2. Clay4bc says:

    You know it!

Next they’ll be wearing “blackface” to games.

    Oh, wait…

I had some hockey taglines, but I don’t know where the puck I put them.

  3. avatar_58 says:

I did as well. Disgusting. It’s one thing to have good natured ribbing about enemy players, but racist shit like that?

  4. NaturalizedCanadian says:

Yeah I reported that. Hopefully that comes down.

  5. VancouverHab says:

Thanks, big guy. We could use Corson tonight (and I’d forgotten Knuckles Nilan — he was a Cherry hero)

Does Don Cherry love Iginla? That would tell regarding a racial aspect..

  6. VancouverHab says:

With respect, I will continue to post defenses of Don Cherry from attacks that are as follows:

    • Politically partisan. Many people attack Don Cherry simply because he does not share the attacker’s political stance. This is narrow-minded.
    • Irrational. Many people attack Don Cherry not because of what he said but because of irrelevant opinions (and false and biased conjecturea) bout what the attacker derived from some remarks in the past
    • Egotism. Many–and most of the Pro writers–attack Don Cherry because the writers think themselves to be the intellectual and moral superiors of Mr. Cherry. This — preening self-affirmation–is the most loathesome of the motivations for abuse of Mr. Cherry and should be vigorously exposed & dismissed.

I don’t expect or want anybody or everybody to agree with or even like Don Cherry. But I want to defend the defensible.

I will try to maintain reasonableness, and trust that my fellow commentors will either ignore the posts or treat them with the same respectfulness.

Fortunately, Mr. Cherry’s abusers pride themselves on their toleration of minority beliefs, so my minority status in this regard makes me sure to be treated with dignity & toleration ;–)

  7. AH says:

Chorske, I’m hoping the same thing, and after they put their goons out for the powerplay in the last game, I’m afraid these guys are capable of anything!

  8. DearyLeary says:

Nah, monkeys are smart enough to throw their feces at Don in disgust.

  9. SeriousFan09 says:

One Penguins blog did similar garbage during the playoffs, it’s beyond pathetic.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  10. Keith says:

That’s Filthy fans for you…absolutely no class.

  11. Propwash says:

    What jerks.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  12. Big Ted says:

That is racist, plain and simple. I’m not one to call out people for racism, because I think it also gets used as an excuse sometimes, but that is really in bad taste. This person should be reported on facebook.

  13. Big Ted says:

JM was asked and he basically said that threats would not affect the canadiens and they were moving on as if nothing happened. typical.

JM or PG should have spoken out to the league or the media.

  14. kempie says:

No I won’t disagree with your point. The Phoenix game was one of the more exciting and fastest games so far this season. Good team, but 14,000 empty seats illustrates my point.

  15. Chorske says:

PK is from Toronto. It should be a match made in heaven!

Even Hal Gill was on the record the other day saying that PK was a big yapper, and that he wouldn’t much like being on the receiving end of PK’s act. Presumably, at some point, PK is going to let his hockey do all the talking. Or most of it, at any rate.

  16. Ian Cobb says:

Get the water in the tub early!!

  17. Chorske says:

Hey now! I may not agree with VancouverHab wrt Cherry, but he can defend him all he wants on HIO.

And (not to be third man in or anything) I seem to remember Cherry liking Corson as a Hab. He liked our bruisers, like Nilan and so on.

  18. Chorske says:

It could also be a disaster.

The Flyers routinely use this kind of yapping to throw teams off their game plan, to sucker them into retaliation calls. I hope that- win or lose- PK plays with discipline, and the Flyers don’t goon it up too much.

Mostly I hope the refs are a bit more alert.

  19. AH says:

Agree, and what about the OWNERS and PG! Even though it was the Flyers, (whom I despise), I do remember their owner Ed Snyder going off on the refereeing in the league to the media, years ago, calling it a “damn disgrace”! I’d like to see Mr. Molson take the same stance with the the league brass over this “veiled” threat against one of his players and challenge them over what they’re going to do about it!

  20. JD_ says:

    I believe one did.

  21. Chorske says:

He’s produced a series of videos called Rockem Sockem that have been obligatory stocking stuffers for generations of kids who have now made the NHL and think that there is nothing better than landing a highlight-reel hit. Who cares if hockey players’ brains are as scrambled as boxers’ at the end of their careers? He’s also fostered a culture where the ideal hockey player is not fast and skilled, but a third line grinder from Penticton or Wawa or Thunder Bay. Where the European style of play is sneered at.

But the big part of the blame rests on Richards. An NHL captain, saying shite like that? I hope I’m wrong, but here’s hoping some Flyer monster doesn’t go all Bertuzzi on our PK.

  22. jbroderi says:

that crosses racism lines, to be honest!

“I’ll take potent potables for 500, Alex” JB

  23. DearyLeary says:

Frankly, a monkey could have won a Jack Adams coaching Bobby Orr.

  24. Clay4bc says:

Did you forget that this team finished first in the east a short time ago? It hasn’t been 25 years since we’ve sen these numbers – it’s been 2.

But your point is well taken, and I would take this team over the old one in a second. Lots of character here.

I had some hockey taglines, but I don’t know where the puck I put them.

  25. Ian Cobb says:

Your correct sir, I should have left the last line off.!

  26. Ian Cobb says:

You have your priorities out of order my friend!  Just funning you.

  27. avatar_58 says:

A flyers fan just posted a picture of a monkey playing hockey on a subban facebook page. Wow. Class right there.

Keep your head up PK – don’t listen to these clowns. All of them, media included. Keep playing YOUR game.

  28. Clay4bc says:

Careful with the drug allegations there, Ian. It wasn’t cool when people here did it to Price, and it’s not cool now.

I had some hockey taglines, but I don’t know where the puck I put them.

  29. habsfansince91 says:

you can’t compare the two. One is against the law and the other is against the rules. Its happened plenty of times in the NFL this year where an illegal hit was made and the player got fined $50k with no suspension.

  30. Big Ted says:

Roethlisberger may have done nothing on the field, but he allegedly raped a woman, and the only reason he’s not still in jail is that there was not enough evidence to charge him. That said, the NFL certainly seems to be much more consistent with the way it ahnds out suspensions.

  31. linp says:

Why no one asks JM about Richard’s threat? He is the coach and he is responsible for his players.

  32. spoonfullofjelly says:

NFL…Ben Roethlisberger does nothing (well mayeb he did who knows) and gets what was it 6 games? later reduced to 4?

that’s what? 25% of the season?

NHL, blindside hit, here take 2 games and think about what you did. Yeah the equivalence of what’s that? like 2.3 percent of the games or something? i don’t know maths never been my strong point and I don’t want to pull out a calculator.

The point is Boone is right, the NFL knows how to handle discipline, the NHL is a joke.

  33. SeriousFan09 says:

Dallas doesn’t have a cap issue, they have an ownership issue which made the Neal and Erikkson RFA extensions such a drawn-out process (kinda wish Gauthier had dropped an offer sheet for Neal) at present, the ownership situation is why Richards doesn’t have a deal done, Nieuwendyk doesn’t have the go-ahead to sign him.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  34. 24 Cups says:

R – Dallas has enough cap space to re-sign Richards.  It’s not like they have a lot of great assets on their team.

If they do let him go, then it’s a sign that the fire sale has begun and they are about to go into a full tilt boogie rebuild (even though it will really be about saving coin and heading to the cap floor).
