Liveblog: Canadiens blanked in Toronto

They gave up a shortie.

They lost Chris Campoli.

The power-play was pathetic.

On to Winnipeg.

  1. shuttle-lemaire-lafleur says:

brilliant… at least 3 habs behind TO’s net, looks like squirt hockey……go down 2-0 and throw the fourth line on for the big push back….JM is a genius….

  2. Gerry H says:

Ugh. Twenty minutes does not make a hockey game. They stopped skating. They stopped forechecking. They never even started hitting. The result was inevitable.

The only bright spots were Carey Price being on his game right out of the gate, Gomez displaying a willingness to go to the net we haven’t seen from him before now in Montreal and solid play by Diaz. MaxPac, Cole and PK were all invisible. The fourth line was dreadful.

Was the lack of response in periods two and three a sign that they are going to miss Kirk Muller?

  3. Da Hema says:

Someone should inform the Canadiens’ players the regular season started tonight….

  4. topher5468 says:

Can’t wait for Quick Hits/ALN. I really missed that,

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  5. matrags says:

Leafs bigger, hungrier, and meaner ,our copmpete level was way tooool ow , did we even throw a hit all night. No offenive zone pressure at all, one and out all night. We will see , it ant in the sayin its in the doin , and we didnt show up tonight.

    • topher5468 says:

Very well said. In the first I thought the lack of physicality was due to the leafs being to slow, well there was no excuse for the last 40 min. Also there was no Kirk Muller to push the team back in the right direction after the 2nd

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  6. TPlow says:

Wow, that was some kind of boring hockey game.

  7. Rainrocket16 says:

Habs are weak and sloppy…gonna be a long season!!

  8. SeriousFan09 says:

    – No Cole or Pacioretty in the final minute, all the forwards out there were under 6′ and we had Josh Gorges out there too.
    – Team lacked intensity after the first 20, than waited until they were down 2-0. Trademark of the Canadiens for years, not caring about a game they should take for the points.
    – Cole was completely underused in the game. Pacioretty seemed timid like he was before his explosive recall last season.
    – Still can’t score in Amsterdam with a briefcase of Euros.
    – Price could have held a shutout and it wouldn’t have mattered.
    – To sum up the night, Lupul beat two Habs for that last icing call and their legs were going like his were on it.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  9. The Dude says:

eff it ,Gauthier grab Avery….at least it will be interesting!

  10. MikeMcLaren says:

It’s still amazing how much so many here like to overreact to a single loss. So, the 82-0 season is now out of the cards. Whew, now nobody has to worry about the pressure of that, so let’s move on, shall we?

Did everyone forget the first period so quickly? Maybe it makes the result of this game a little more painful, I’m not sure, but the Canadiens were dominating the Leafs at that point. If they can keep playing like they did in the first and just convert on more of the chances, they’ll be fine.

Far too early to panic, folks. Far too early!

    • Matt. says:

loved how the Canadiens dominated for one period, didn’t score, than did nothing!

      • habsbeens says:

Apparently any reaction is an overreaction. Maybe somebody needs to remind Mikey that a hockey game consists of three periods.

        • MikeMcLaren says:

I apologize if you took what I wrote to mean that the Canadiens played three great games of hockey. They did not.

However, why so many people now consider the season lost after a game 1 loss to the Leafs is beyond me. The Habs did the same thing last year, still made the playoffs and were within one goal of knocking out the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

But if all you guys want to stop watching the team this year because they’re surely just going to suck, by all means please do.

          GO HABS GO!

          • habsbeens says:

Don’t you find it a bit ironic that you use the word overreact in describing other people’s responses? Just sayin’.

No need to remind me of the Habs play-off run last season. I read all about it in the latest edition of Guinness Book of Almost Records.

    • Trisomy 21 says:

What you don’t realizes it that the Habs didn’t play that great in the first period, Toronto was just absolutely lost out there. More turnovers than the Pillsbury dough boy. They had to capitalize on those gifts, but couldn’t. I think people are just upset to see us come out flat after waiting all summer, and see some of the old problems still here.

    • habstrinifan says:

I listened tot he game and didnt see it. But base don the calls, while the Canadiens had more chances I wouldnt say they dominated the first period. And they were definitely out-hit in the first period, which probably had them looking over their shoulders the rest of the game.

  11. topher5468 says:

Not going to get down on the team yet, even after this suck fest. However, I don’t understand the use of Eric Cole tonight

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

  12. HABS_FAN_NS says:

Oh well , See y’all on Sunday

  13. TheMock780 says:

Healy called a spade a spade, outside of Price, Diaz and DD the Habs stopped playing once the puck was dropped to start the second. I was particularly disappointed in PK and Pleks tonight. It was a return of bad PK tonight (the pinch and turnover on the goals the obvious examples. And he just seemed to be missing his usual jump tonight) and Pleks was making was making horrible decisions with the puck all night. Then again, none of the Habs skaters were impressive really.

The Habs just weren’t sharp what so ever and one has to wonder whether if the lack of time together in the preseason for the Habs vets cost the Habs tonight. They clearly weren’t playing with any kind of cohesion or intensity. The Habs better get themselves going because they’re going to be facing an even more jacked up opponent on Wednesday.

It was only one game. But it sure wasn’t exactly encouraging.

  14. Habitant in Surrey says:

…where’s HardHabits when We need Him ?

    Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

  15. shootdapuck says:

    Rusty, disjointed and not skating.

So much for the strategy in the “its only preseason” of not playing the actual NHL team until the last game!

JM still plays not to lose !

… the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that “the league” is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office.

Charles P. Pierce – Boston Globe

  16. ffenliv says:

Habs lost the first game of the year to the leafs last year, too. Don’t lose yer heads.

They had good chances in the first, and they didn’t bury them. That won’t happen every night. A goal in the first would have drastically altered this game.

    • shootdapuck says:

but they competed last year and got stoned by Giggy!

… the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that “the league” is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office.

Charles P. Pierce – Boston Globe

  17. habsfan0 says:

Will the Habs at least score a goal in Winnipeg?

  18. Barts says:

Zero energy, no physicality, no pushback, our goalie gets run over twice with no response. This team is so vanilla, but what do you expect with Weber on the fourth line???? Pathetic.

  19. The Dude says:

Leafs D too much for our lil forwards…gonna be a looooooong season!

  20. Duracell3 says:

On another note Jagr’s 1600th was pretty cool.

  21. Bozo McBozo says:

After what I witnessed, I am going to the john and Heave Away!

  22. AK_PK_Usay says:

Price Gorges played at their usual

PK AK Gomez showed up but didnt get much done

rest of team was invisible or worse

BTW cole missed an empty net… so yeah, not impressed, And cammy was just BRUTAL

I dont want to start about DD… ton of PP time to skate in circles and make blind passes…

Enough of dumping the puck and playing like we have the team for North South… We have quite good passers for a possession type game.

Plexxx on PP point is abysmal… that plus DD made the 1st pp unit useless.

  23. Chris79 says:

Komisarek was all over Moen’s Face… goin woooooooooo….wooooooooooo..!!! and Moen just looked pitiful and took it dry. like he always does..

  24. F you Habs. I don’t want to go to school tomorrow sigh.

  25. hablifting says:

Yep. Easy two points. Leafs suck..blah blah blah.

Same crap every year. Team is soft, team can’t score. Please…please…pleeeaasse. Improve. Please.

  26. ross says:

Minus two mistakes by Subban, and we might not have been on our heels for the entirety of the third. Definitely seemed demoralized by that point; very little hustle until the final 35 seconds.

  27. habs63 says:

Well I only saw the 3rd and it looks like they are still in pre-season mode. Was it much the same in the first 2 periods?

Also, how did Campodi get hurt?

  28. Captain aHab says:

Can’t wait for JM’s post game comments. On second thought, I’ll go read a book.

  29. Bozo McBozo says:

Reimer is Bower, Broda and Bruce Gamble rolled into one!!!

  30. SnowManHabs85 says:

    Its sick…

  31. Marc10 says:

Wow. What a shame for Pricey.

As per usual, the Habs play a small ill-prepared game against the Leafs… Every year it looks like they save their worst for this team and TO saves their best for the Habs.

Figure it out already. Where are the leaders? Why are we phoning it in on a relatively easy 2 points.. Every year it’s a struggle. Man! It sh**s me.

    Go PK Go!

  32. Habifax says:

    Goalie out and Travis Moen?????????

  33. Propwash says:

    10$ says we don’t score.

  34. tcartr says:

Loafs had their way with the habs, knocked them around. When is JM and PG going to get some physicality on this team?

  35. LL says:

Don’t mind the loss but being shut-out, really hurts.

  36. NLhabsfan says:

You this is The LAFFS Stanley Cup:)

  37. habsfan0 says:

    Jacques Martin 0 Stanley Cups

  38. JoeC says:

So im gonna sleep well thinking about how much these guys get payed to play 1 period of hockey 🙁

  39. AK_PK_Usay says:

DD is the 6th guy? WTF, JM is an idiot, he must be drinking the same koolaid as a bunch of posters here, DD is NOT the next coming.

  40. Montrealer2 says:

    still Losing since 1993

“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”

  42. Habifax says:

JM is having a bromance with DD.

  43. Propwash says:

    Plan the parade Leafers!

  44. hablifting says:

Cams with a patented blind centering pass to the other team. Terrible.

  45. DEANDALLEY says:

Hate is a strong word but I really hate Martin!

“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”

  46. Big Ted says:

Schenn (who should be out of the game) with a cross-check after the whistle. Leafs D keep taking gratuitous shots. And will continue to do so if the refs keep enjoying their front row seats to this game.

  47. jo_maka says:

Are we doomed yet ?!? Sorry, lost track of when exactly we should all panic. Somebody book a spot under Champlain Bridge, stat !!!
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture

  48. Bozo McBozo says:

Just wait until Yemelin comes over from Russia!

  49. Fabio D says:

I miss Kirk Muller already. Penalty kill looked horrible, power play as usual ineffective. JMOnly the first game, but this team is looking like the same old Habs. No passion, no fire for this rivalry. Going to be a boring season.

Losing to the Leafs and another 4 years of that lying scumbag McGuinty. What a BAD night.

  50. Montrealer2 says:

I see the cigar store indian behind the bench still hasn’t done much….Yikes I am not a JM fan

“I’m not blind,I’ve just seen enough”

  51. Grallis says:

Hate to say it…but; It’s going to be a long year……Can’t score on Reimer, how can you score on Miller and Thomas? WOW!!! Overwhelmed at are own game.LOFL!

And on the 8th day the Lord said…..let there be the Canadiens

  55. C_exacte says:

they should put the Canadiens Express of this game on RDS 2, who’d want to rewatch this face wash??

  56. AceMagnum says:

The tradition continues. Against the Toronto in front of the whole country, first game of the season, Habs gonna bend over and spread em for the Leafs. You can just about set your watch by it. I’m winning a lot of money tonight.

  57. SnowManHabs85 says:

What happened to Emelin? Healthy scratch?

“Responding to the media , or playing to the media, or listening to the fans is the quickest way to start losing” – Sam Pollock

  58. DEANDALLEY says:

    SORRY Boone, U were correct!

  59. TOEmastro says:

    That M&M commercial was AMAZING

    Olé, olé, olé oleé

  60. Captain aHab says:

So one good period. Then holding down the suck button for the remaining two. Time to go bowling.

  61. habstrinifan says:

Best election ad for long long time.. Liberal ad with McGuinty starting of by saying I know I am a ‘hated guy’…. then calmy goes on to explain his actions.. especially on health care and education. First time I saw it I phoned my daughter and said it’s over… Liberals gonna win base don that AD alone.

Polling after that ad showed turn-around from what was a heft PC lead.

OOOPS SORRY. Went to a hockey game and an election broke-out.
    Musta been a dull game.

  62. JoeC says:

Good game by Price and Diaz and basically the 4th line, i think thats all i can say was good.

  63. DEANDALLEY says:

Man, it’s going to ba a long day at work tomorrow!

    Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

  67. Former Jets Fan says:

Cole played all 82 games last season and averaged 2:42 of power play time. That’s 221 minutes of power play time over the course of the season. He scored THREE times. He had 8 points.

It’s not the strength of his game.

    • Traf27 says:

Yeah but when you’re down 2-0 it’s worth a try. Oh and here’s and idea if 5-5 his his strength play him on the top f**king line.

How many days till we can say goodbye to JM… worst thing to happen to the Habs since Rejean Houle

  68. Did all of the forwards get drunk after the 1st?

    Offense seems soo bad.

  69. Habifax says:

They really need some size down the middle.

  70. SnowManHabs85 says:

so where is this offense that PG and JM think they’ve acquired in the off season? Somebody please score…

“Responding to the media , or playing to the media, or listening to the fans is the quickest way to start losing” – Sam Pollock

    That’s a penalty.

At least the Bruins are losing…
