Circle the wagons

Predictably, his teammates rallied around Carey Price.

Hal Gill, Mike Cammalleri and Josh Gorges took turns conveying the same party line:

The Bell Centre crowd may have their doubts about the Number 1 goaltender, but his teammates believe in him.

“What’s important,” Jacques Martin said, “is how the organization and all the players feel about Carey.

“Our fans are very passionate, and you have to respect that,” Martin added. The coach ventured the prediction that Price would emerge stronger from a game in which he yielded four goals on the first eight shots he faced and was subjected to derisive cheers on the saves he made.

“Is he Superman?” Gorges asked rhetorically. “Is he supposed to save everything: breakaways, backdoor, 2-on-1s …

“We have to help him,” Gorges added. “This is our team. We’re all in this together. And as a fan, you have to be supportive.”

No you don’t. Not in Montreal, the self-styled world capital of hockey, where we love our teams, win or tie … and ties don’t happen anymore.

Yes, it was a meaningless exhibition game. And no, Price did not get great support from his D or backchecking forwards.

But an air of nervous expectation hung over the Bell Centre like a cigarette cloud in the old Forum. Everyone was holding their breath, waiting to see how Price would perform.

He was unlucky … but not very good, either.

And at least on this night, Price failed to exorcise the ghost of Jaroslav Halak.

He’ll get another chance, probably in front of a more sympathetic crowd –  in Ottawa on Saturday night

How did Price feel about his worst-case-scenario ordeal?

We don’t know.

The goaltender did not come out to the room to be interviewed about a crowd reaction Gill candidly described as “disheartening”.

As both a designer and an avid hockey fan and player it bothers me how incredibly stale goalie pad designs are currently. I don’t think I’ve seen a more boring set of equipment than what’s pictured there. What happened to goalies having some personality. I fondly remember the great Koho designs that Roy used to wear

  23. Propwash says:

As veteran readers of the blog can attest, I tend to low-ball the Canadiens … with the goal of being pleasantly surprised. And I forgot to mention the Sabres, who have Ryan Miller and a great coach. But I’m sticking to my registered long guns: Don’t count out Atlanta or the Leafs.

  27. Chuck says:

As long as the coach doesn’t bench him after a couple of great starts, he’ll be fine.

    … groan …
  29. SeriousFan09 says:

Predicting another strong season for Rask, plus the addition of Horton, Seguin putting new scoring punch back in the lineup would be how Boone is raising BOS over MTL.

Their D after Chara is questionable though and Rask has to escape the Sophmore slump. MTL I think has a real shot at the Division if Pouliot, AK and Price play to their potential.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  30. Chuck says:

    Nice paint job… a blur!  πŸ˜‰

  31. The Juice says:

Boone, good to have you back discussing themes of a hockey related nature rather than posting ramdom videos (although the last one was hilarious!), but I’m afraid you appear to have been drinking some form of tainted kool-aid given your Eastern Conference predictions:

    1) Why would the Habs cede position to Boston? Do you actually believe they have a better team?

    2) Atlanta will NOT be challenging for a playoff spot.

    3) The Leafs have NO CHANCE of being within sniffing distance of 12th place come March.

    Anyone disagree?

  32. SeriousFan09 says:

The RDS stream I survived on last season is apparently using this link for pre-season Habs action, not sure if it will work but it’s the best I have so far.

    • Andrew Conboy-Louis Leblanc-Gabriel Dumont

    • Yannick Weber-FrΓ©dΓ©ric St-Denis

    • Carey Price!!

    “It must be love!”

  34. Chuck says:

Dana, you make it sound like the kid’s never won a game in the NHL!

  35. CharlieHodgeFan says:

The pre-season has its downsides, but I’m just going to be an armchair GM in charge of inconsequential scouting tonight. The game is meaningless but the play should be informative. I want a look at the kids, to see not only how the NHLers look, but also to start getting a read on some of the AHLers.

  36. Woah_Dana says:

Well, coming from one who was a believer in Halak over Price, I too have to say that I hope the crowd keeps their lips zipped. We’ve had most of the summer to digest the decision to keep Price over Halak (minus those who’d hoped for just that), & Price is all we’ve got going for us between the posts. We really have no choice but to believe (try?) & be supportive no matter what happens tonight (it’s pre-season, common!) – otherwise.. it’s going to be a very, very long year.

    Excited for tonight nonetheless!!

    GO HABS!

  37. Woah_Dana says:

That’s what I was thinking. Price Era, Take Two *snap*

    GO HABS!

  38. Mr.Hazard says:

MY PREDICTION: barring 3 early soft goals, fans will be supportive of Price. As they should. Besides, they realize he is their best chance, now that Halak is gone.

    “Shit-disturber” -Bar

  39. oshawahabsfan says:

Haven’t really scoured the ‘experts’ predictions yet, but who in their right mind would pick Boston to finish ahead of Montreal in the standings. Their defence is worse, goaltending at best a draw, offence posesses less threats than Montreal’s, especially with no Savard for the powerplay. Nobody on that team will score as many goals as Cammalleri or Gionta. Seguin is a nice prospect, but I wouldn’t expect him to lead the Bruins to the promise land this year

  40. Fant-HAB-ulous says:

I’m only mildly excited for tonight. The pre-season is far too long for my liking. What are the Habs playing? Something like 6 games in 9 nights??

Anyhow, I hope the win a few, just for morale purposes, but I don’t think we should put any real stock into tonight’s or any other pre-season game results.

  41. Chorske says:

I wonder about that first statement. Part of me thinks that all Pouliot needs to do in this town to keep his nose clean is sois beau et parle Francais, but then, the locals do have a history of being extra hard on the homeboys.

When has a goalie NOT been a whipping boy- in this town, or any other? Boos or no boos, a player has to go out and play his game. And there are guys who have been through worse- MUCH worse. The fact that O’Byrne is still with us, and playing more confidently, and keeping a positive attitude, is amazing considering how badly he was raked over the coals two years ago. And don’t even get me started about Brisebois.

  42. Greg says:

I disagree.  I think Pouliot will be able to silently do nothing if he chooses too.  I don’t think Habs fans have too many expectations for Pouliot. We didn’t really give anything up for him, so if he excels, great, but if he doesn’t at least we’re no further behind than we were before we traded for him.

Price however, has been, and will continue to be, everyone’s favorite whipping boy.  What’s disgusting is how Habs fans treat their 23 year old goaltender who has the potential to be a great franchise goalie.  Patience people.  Bob Gainey’s best (and maybe most prophetic, we’ll see…) line when he was GM was “the fans should be careful who they boo out of town”.

“I lined up next to him at a faceoff, looked over and said “Hi Rocket”. All he did was growl.”

    -Gordie Howe

  43. sidhu says:

I have a gut feeling Pouliot will be this year’s whipping boy — Lars will jump up to the 2nd line, Halpern skates with Max and Moen/Pyatt.

I’m hoping both Pouliot and AK47 step it up — 20g for the former, 30g for the latter.

  44. sidhu says:

Good to see you again, Showey [tapping your pads]

    Let’s go boys!

  45. JF says:

This year’s team should be a little better than last if one or both of Kostitsyn and Pouliot perform consistently to the level they’re capable of.  But without solid goaltending, the team is going nowhere, and “the Price era begins tonight.”  Price is the present and future of this franchise in nets; behind him are two veterans, neither of whom has managed to hold down a starter’s job (Auld and Sanford), and a handful of young prospects who are years away from having a chance to make it.  I hope fans will remember this and give Price a warm welcome tonight, and support him through the bad times as well as the good.  He’s going to give up bad goals and play bad games; it happens to all goaltenders.  He needs to know that the fans are behind him and will not start mercilessly booing and chanting Halak’s name the moment things go wrong.  His teammates and most observers agree that he matured a great deal over the last year; nevertheless, early in the season at any rate, it probably wouldn’t take much to shatter his confidence.  We can’t afford to have that happen.  We can’t afford to see him leave Montreal and develop his enormous potential elsewhere.

  46. Harani says:

Happy birthday to my lovely daddy who I’m going to the game with tonight! Gotta love a daddy who buys me a 2007 Black Honda Civic! SWEET! Just hoping he doesn’t make me drive it till it hits Hickey-territory.

    “It must be love!”

  47. Propwash says:

Anyone else feeling more comfortable having Sanford as a backup, rather than Auld?

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  48. DearyLeary says:

    It’s just pre-season, but I’m ultra-excited.

  49. HabsProf says:

I think you mean the 2nd Price Era, don’t you?  We already had the start of the Price Era a couple of years back.  It ended prematurely.

And yes, I also hope the cheap seats (are there any cheap seats in the Bell Centre?) will be patient. I also doubt they will be.

“Deserves” got nothin’ to do with it.

  50. Propwash says:

I’m totally jazzed to see tonight’s game, win or lose.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  51. showey47 says:

We put the “fun” in dysfuntional.

  52. sidhu says:

Looking forward to another season with you, Boone, and the rest of the Habs I/O (sometimes disfunctional) family.

    Indeed :) So close …

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  59. DOAHABS says:

I do like the idea that the HAbs are at least shooting at the net, this has been a big weakness for years…

  60. Chorske says:

Regardless of the outcome, there will be many positive lessons learned tonight.

Poor Price, as usual he got precious little support from his teammates.

  61. Keith says:

Tinordi has been a force tonight! I want to see more of him in the pre-season.

  62. WarHero says:

Agreed, the D let him down big time :(

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  63. sidhu says:

Leblanc has speed but he’s been knocked around, he’ll bulk up and learn to brace himself better..

  64. SeriousFan09 says:

Tinordi has bought himself at least one more pre-season match, London Knights are lucky to have him.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  65. Chorske says:

It’s so great to see the kids (like Leblanc) realize how FAST the game is at this level- and pick up their games. Palushaj, Leblanc, and Tinordi have been just fine, with gusts up to excellent. So much young promise on this team.

  66. thorandresson says:

He has a great shot, but too bad he’s not too good defensively

  67. JIMVINNY says:

    Has anyone noticed Seguin?

  68. WarHero says:

    Not a bit :)

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  69. andrewberkshire says:

Aside from Price, I’m very pleasantly pleased with the team tonight. Some breakdowns early, but everyone seemed to get better as the game went on. Tinordi, Palushaj and Leblanc have been especially impressive.

  70. andrewberkshire says:

He got an assist on Boychuck’s goal.

  71. CharlieHodgeFan says:

And, in return, Price let the team down big time too. And it doesn’t matter unless the poor performance gets into his head. Goalies will have bad nights. So will defences. There’s no pattern yet. It’s a warm-up, practice game for him. Let’s hope he finds his confidence.

  72. RJB says:

Note to Tim Thomas…get used to the bench, you’re gonna be seeing a lot of it again this year.

I think some early jitters were to be expected. Lots of good things on display tonight.

  77. sidhu says:

    Good shift by St Denis

  78. Chorske says:

    Not a bad start.

Again, my heart bleeds for Carey Price. Why can’t this team put in a solid effort for him?

  79. JIMVINNY says:

Killed them in every part of the game except goaltending.

  80. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

Good game. Price needs to get that rust off. Rask looks like he’s in top form already.

OH MAN, Habs are FAST! Speedy team.

  81. thorandresson says:

Not much mention of Maxwell, but thought he played a fairly good match, he fought hard and along with Palushaj could be the other surprise at camp

  82. crabvader says:

Safe to say Rask stole one?

  83. Willy the bum says:

Ah well, at least we’re not worst than the Leafs from last night’s game against Sens…

    …happy as a panda…

  84. Chuck says:

First half of the first preseason game jitters, I guess. They sure looked better as the game wore on.

  85. petrov14 says:

  86. Bill says:

Probably the best thing that could have happened to Price. He knows he’s on the hot seat and the temperature just got turned up. He’ll rebound with a fierce effort next time.

It’s just a preseason game anyway. This is not the team that will take the ice for opener … on either side. Wouldn’t put too much stock into it.

  89. Keith says:

I saw some good and bad in this game. Alot of hussle from the kids, but unfortunately Carey Price was not at his best tonight, but it IS only the pre-season afterall, remember that everyone. Pricey WILL bounce back from this.

  90. sidhu says:

Heroes: Pleks, Cammy, JG, 51 (Voldemort), Tinordi, Lapierre

  91. Just A Guy says:

I agree, but to his credit that was Horton knocking him around.

  92. ManApart says:

I agree. Liked the tenacity from some of the kids and the aggressive forechecking by the team in general (very un-JM like). Just still a lack of finish and goal-scoring talent though.

Rask will be tough this year…

  100. SeriousFan09 says:

#1 was tipped on Spacek’s stick and every goal was from a roster player on Boston. Unless Horton, Boychuk and Bergeron are the next to be cut from the Boston roster of course…

  101. joeybarrie says:

Exactly correct. Not a bad thing. Took until we switch goalies just for the defence to show up. Get out all the idiots calling for Halak right away, so we will be ready the the REAL season.

“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
    – Bilbo Baggins

  106. Chuck says:

Meh. First goal deflection, second goal screen shorthanded. He wasn’t great, but it’s not like they gave him a lot to work with, either.

  107. andrewberkshire says:

I don’t know if it’s lack of goal scoring talent or just a couple kids were too eager. If you look at the Boston roster, their kids didn’t get anything done offensively tonight, and for the most part the game was dominated by Montreal. I’d like to see some of the kids pot goals, but it’s not essential that they do either, as long as they play well.

  108. habs bandwagon fan says:

prediction: my mid season Sanford will be our #1 goalie. he’s last year’s Halak. I can just see it

1 thing for sure: Price is the same as last year. that means no wins for the thoroughbred!

  109. ManApart says:

Nice to see the excuse man is in mid-season form. Hope your excuse library is fully stocked. By the way Scarey played tonight, you’re going to need them.

  110. notbigbird says:

Price does rodeo but you have a hobby horse.

  111. Propwash says:

    4th goal, nifty move.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  112. HardHabits says:

Positives: Tinordi, Palushaj, Leblanc, Plekanec, Lapierre

Negatives: Price looked not all there. 4 goals on 10 shots is not going to cut it.

Bottom line is although goaltending is only a part of the game and goaltenders are just team-mates on a team, the position is too crucial to be mediocre or to be unlucky in.

Yanking him was a good move and sent a clear message. I hope Price gets it.

I know it’s only the 1st game of the pre-season but this is the big time and the back-up looked better than the starter.

Is this the curse of Patrick Roy? Every Habs #2 goaltender will steal the spot light and play better than the #1. Theo over Hacket, Huet over Theo, Price over Huet, Halak over Price ….

Regardless of who or how good the goalie is, the #1 will suck, the #2 will rise against the management like Patrick Roy crossing Tremblay and telling Corey that he’s done as a Hab. It’s like some kind of psychological bad karma thing.

  113. Propwash says:

    To be fair…..

Price was gonna get yanked either way.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  114. Just A Guy says:

Nice to see the patient comments about Price, my co-workers started revisiting the Halak trade after they heard the score halfway through the 2nd. 2 goals for Sanford though, maybe Price needs to start putting up some big money on the…blackboard(?) and buy some goals.

I didn’t see any of the 4 goals so maybe you guys/gals can answer if it was really a rusty start for Price or was there a lot of breakdowns that lead to shots from good angles.

  115. andrewberkshire says:

He didn’t get yanked HH, the plan was Sanford would go in at minute 30, and that’s what happened. But Price was awful, no doubt about it.

  116. ManApart says:

We’ll see how things go this camp, but I do think it is important some of these kids and/or question marks like Pouliot and AK show  some scoring, because if we have to continually count on Cammy,Gio and Pleks again, it won’t be enough.

  117. RJB says:

Smart move by Habs, Price not made available to the media tonight, from Stubbs Twitter: Cammy on Price: “If fans want to identify with this team, we’re all supporting him in here.”

“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
    – Bilbo Baggins

  118. Chuck says:

It was a nifty move, but I wish that Spacek would have done more to prevent the best scorer from going in alone, especially after the brutal giveaway. His attempt at stopping Bergeron was pretty half-assed.

  119. showey47 says:

I found tinordi pretty solid in his own end and very mobile. You can see leblanc has the speed and skill, just needs to get stronger.

  120. HardHabits says:

My bad on the yanked, but sill.

  121. habaholic68NJ says:

Price was not yanked.  It was planned in advance to split the game with Sanford.

  122. joeybarrie says:

Here we go again. I guess it was inevitable… I mean we did have a 48% vote supporting seperation, so clearly we have a few people around who follow blindly…

Price 4 goals against vs Boston……….Simply terrible and useless

Halak 3 goals against vs Colorado…..BEST GOALIE IN THE NHL

Its a fricken miracle some people are even able to breathe without help.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  123. Propwash says:

The first goal I saw was a deflection, the 2nd which I didnt see but heard on CJAD was a screen shot, the 3rd I didnt see at all, the 4th was a nifty move shorthanded.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  124. andrewberkshire says:

3 of the goals were on either breakaways or 2-on-1s, but Price was still not good at all.

  125. andrewberkshire says:

He has to be a lot better, no question. Tough to compare against what Sanford saw though because I don’t think the Bruins had a single scoring chance against him.

  126. RJB says:

    More from Stubbs twitter: Cammy:
“No one in this room is booing (Price). We’re aware of (boos). That’s
our goaltender. It didn’t go ideal for him tonight.”

“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
    – Bilbo Baggins

  127. Shiloh says:

OK – I’m just about maxed out on the “They don’t score for Carey” whine. They don’t score for Carey because they are playing far more defensively – because he rarely makes the big save!!! It’s simple – we get 15 shots, they get 3 – and we’re down 2-0. Poor Carey, sniff, sniff. Wahhh – they don’t score for him. I guess not when you have to mind the baby back there. He’d better wake up and start playing like a major-league goaltender. No excuses, stop the ^%$%^$# puck!

  128. ManApart says:

They only let up like 9 shots. A couple of bad defensive plays were in there, but the kid has got to stop something once in a while. There seems to always be an excuse from some of you for ever goal that goes in. If he can’t do better than this the Habs have no chance at the playoffs. No more excuses now. Look at Rask. Same draft year as Price and he was very solid tonight. Not a miracle worker, but did what he had to. Price has got to be like that.

  129. joeybarrie says:

I will admit though Pricey didnt look good. But its the first game. He is a good goalie. Let’s see how he rebounds.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  130. scrowe21 says:

I dont think anyone is claiming Halak is the best. People are just high on Halak cause he played so great here last year and Price didn’t. Yes Halak had a pretty crappy night last night too……but man….Price…seemed like they scored on every real shot he faced… It just gives you that feeling that everytime Boston pulled the trigger it was gunna go in…it sucks. I feel bad for him.

My spinorama shootout goal with Cammy

  131. Hockey Socks says:

If Palushaj, Eller, and Schultz all work out… D’Agostini + Halak for Palushaj + Eller + Schultz isn’t so terrible.

  132. Chuck says:

First goal deflected off of Spacek’s stick, second was a screened slapshot on the powerplay from inside the blue line, third was a nifty move by Bergeron, and the fourth was a Bergeron breakaway which was the result of a nasty Spacek turnover just outside of the blue line.

  133. K-hab25 says:

Exactly!! I’m not a delusional Halakite, when my goalie plays like crap, I have no problem saying so. It’s one game and a preseason game at that. So I’m not to worried. I’ll leave the overreacting to the flip flopping, nut jobs.

  134. twilighthours says:

Anybody know where Danny Kristo is?  The Habs’ NHL website says he’s not on any of the training camp teams.  It’d be nice to see this kid against NHL players.

  135. scrowe21 says:

I agree..Trade looks great actually, especially since we got to keep Plekanec because of it too

My spinorama shootout goal with Cammy

  136. ManApart says:

That’s a very big IF my friend.

  137. sidhu says:

PG to Stan Bowman: hey, so how’s it going… anyway, about Huet… could you send him a ticket to Montreal instead of Europe?

  138. Propwash says:

Betcha some of you guys wish Price`s contract was a two way one, lol.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  139. sidhu says:

That trade looks good only if Price plays well

  140. Propwash says:

Palusaj definately worked his arse off tonight.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  141. showey47 says:

They play far more defensively for carey because he sucks? But yet they gave up a shorthanded breakaway,a 3 on 1 goal and a 2 on 1 which was deflected in? Didn’t see any of those in the 2nd half. Gee i would hate to see what happens when the habs don’t play defence.

  142. Chuck says:

Quite frankly, the Bruins played a much sounder defense in front of Rask in the first half of the game. Sure, the Habs piled up some shots, but a lot of them were from a long way out with the B’s defence making sure that Rask could see them.

  143. showey47 says:

Where the rest of the ncaa players are,in school.

  144. joeybarrie says:

You obviously didn’t see the whole game. Once Price was out of the goal the team played great. Price has to do better, but the team needs to play the same in front of him. If you think the team played the same in front of both goalies, then you don’t know your a** fron your elbow.

Its not poor Carey, He needs to start making the big saves. Which he has done plenty in his time on the team. Tonight it was the situation. I can say Price need to play like RASK… He was great tonight.

Funny though how the Bruins had 5 useless shots once Carey was out of the goal, and the defence woke up…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  145. Premier Ralph says:

Price will be OK..Its just ONE game and It is PRESEASON!

  146. Chuck says:

Using logic on Shiloh is like water off of a duck’s back…  :)

  147. scrowe21 says:

My spinorama shootout goal with Cammy

  148. twilighthours says:

Riiiiight.  I guess universities aren’t going to give students time off to play exhibition games.  Forgot he was still in school.

  149. Exit716 says:

TSN. Jennifer Hedger…Carey Price gets the hook. Ummm,.,.no you stupid Bimbo. They split the game with Sanford. Christ. Don’t let slander get in the way of a good lie. What a joke that network is. Can’t get their facts straight.

  150. ManApart says:

Rask made a ton of big saves from scrambles close in, just by his positioning with his pads. His positioning made some big saves on a few he was screened on also. Regardless, he looked a hell of a lot better than our goaltender, that’s for sure. That is not a good sign.

  151. RiverviewCanadien says:

The team puts on a show like that for half the game, and every 3rd post is about Price?!

So Price did not have his best game…it was pre-season, and there were far more encouraging things on the ice tonight, than worrying about our #1. He will be better, he has to be.
    _ _ _ _ _

WOW! These kids came to play in the 3rd

Times in the 3rd were un-frickin’-real…I mean Plekanec is “The Mechanic”. Cammalleri, brilliant. Palushaj, VERY surprising. Tinordi, looks calm. Leblanc, was a machine and smart with the puck. St. Denis, Weber, Lapierre. So many players had great moments in the 3rd. I could watch another game like that right now.

That was fun to watch (but I am glad no points were involved).

  152. twilighthours says:

After a long summer of reflecting on the Halak trade, it seems strange to me that Gauthier couldn’t get Halak and Plex both signed.  Jaro signed for approx. 1.5 mil more per year than Price.  I’m sure he could have gotten Plex inked for a little less, maybe 500K per year.  It couldn’t have been that difficult to shave 1 mil off the payroll somewhere else.

Of course, Gauthier clearly chose Price, so I guess he never would have even considered it, so what’s strange to me is sensible to him.  I just think it didn’t have to be a choice between Halak or Plex, as has been stated.

  153. andrewberkshire says:

Pouliot and Kostitsyn need to score, no question there. I’m talking about guys like Leblanc and Palushaj, who aren’t likely to make the team this year but are making good in roads.

  154. ManApart says:

The thing is, it’s not just one game. This goes back 2 years now. If it was just ONE game, people would be cool. It’s like if in game 1 of the playoffs next April Joe Thorton doesn’t do much. People won’t be saying it’s just one game, chill out. The history cannot be erased.

  155. Just A Guy says:

Whine? its hard to grasp a tone off text. But if you want to jump to conclusions, be careful what you wish for as per some of the comments that followed your little rant here. It was an attempt at humor. No patterns can emerge until you have enough numbers to take averages. and the fact Carey had one of the lowest goal support in the NHL last year was a pattern. Maybe not so anymore, but since I got enough reply’s that it was not exactly a great half-game for Price, but more often then not goals coming off good/broken plays, I don’t need you to actually answer the question I asked.

    Thanks for the reply.

  156. andrewberkshire says:

No matter what Halak and Allan Walsh have said to the media, Halak would never have signed the same contract here. He would have been looking for 4.5 million on average I’m guessing. As for Plekanec, getting him signed before he was a UFA was more important than shaving 500k of per year.

  157. andrewberkshire says:

Carey Price has only stopped 56% of the shots he’s faced for the last 2 years? Hot damn I’ve been misreading statistics. It was one game, a bad game for him, in a game that didn’t matter. Who cares.

  158. Shiloh says:

They play far tighter with Super-Carey in net because they know if there’s a chance it will likely be in. What part of that observation made over the past three years is illogical? He has to play better. The team will make mistakes for every goalie, but he has to bail them out once in a while. If we don’t get decent goaltending, we won’t have a prayer.

  159. Chuck says:

And how many scrambles did Price get scored on?

Rask screened, puck goes off two posts. Price screened, puck goes just inside post. Price wasn’t out of position on the screen shot goal, and Rask wasn’t out of position when the pucks rang off the post. Thems the breaks. Sometimes the game of inches works in your favour, and sometimes it doesn’t. The only goal that I wish Price had back was the fourth one, where Bergeron beat him with essentially the same move, except on the other side of the goal. Hardly any reason to tie one’s intestines in a knot.

  160. avatar_58 says:

Oh Price :( Shake it off, it’s not a point yet.

On the flipside – WOW Leblanc and Palushaj. Very good shifts. Plek was his normal self.

  161. ManApart says:

Palushaj did pretty good, but I think he was playing with Pleks and Cammy. That certainly helps things. I don’t know, some people including yourself liked Leblanc tonight. I didn’t hate him, but honestly was not very impressed. He seemed a little lost to me.

  162. twilighthours says:

Who knows what contact Halak might have signed?  Not you or I.  All I’m saying is that a different GM – one who would have chosen Halak over Price – wouldn’t have had a very hard time retaining Halak and Plex.

  163. HabFanSince72 says:

Is Jose Theodore still looking for work?

  164. Shiloh says:

They play tentatively in front of him. They don’t take off up ice – the flow is slower and choppier. Showey, I hope he puts up 20 shutouts this year but I don’t think he’s capable of it. Maybe he’ll find his stride.

  165. RiverviewCanadien says:

I have to agree with TH…nobody knows what Halak might have signed for.

  166. Propwash says:

To me, Martin is playing the safe route concerning the `fans` He should call them out.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  167. andrewberkshire says:

I think that’s easy to say from the outside, if Halak stayed in Montreal he would have went to arbitration, no question. And then the Habs could have ended up like the Hawks.

  168. twilighthours says:

And I know he’s a kid, but Price needs to start manning-up and answering the media’s questions when he lays an egg like this.  I think it would go a long way towards him gaining the fans’ respect (back).  Cammi, Gorges, et al never duck the media.

  169. ManApart says:

You’re missing the point. It goes to a pattern of Price not getting the job done and racking up another one in the Loss column. It’s not like it was a fluke Price became a back-up last season. It just makes people say ” Here we go again”, even though it’s just a preseason game.

  170. RiverviewCanadien says:

They could have called to feel him out about before he became eligible (arb.) Andrew, and that never happened.

  171. twilighthours says:

Come on, Andrew, I’m a big fan of your postings, but saying he would have gone to arbitration is even easier to say as an outsider.

I would have liked my GM to at least started contract negotiations with Halak, to find out what his asking price was.  According to reports, that never happened.

  172. Chuck says:

“Is he Superman?” Gorges asked rhetorically. “Is he supposed to save everything: breakaways, 2-on-1s, backdoor …

“We have to help him,” Gorges added.

I’ll take the point of view of the guys inside the room. They know what has to be done. NO goalie will be successful if you continually put him in positions where he’s not likely to succeed.

  173. SUMO says:

Hey Boone, where’s “About Last Night?”………………….. I guess its pre-season for the writes as well :-)

Get a life haters. Its only one friggin pre-season game. I was more interested in watching the prospects. Palushaj, Tinordi and the Great French Hope than scrutinizing every move Carey made.

Anyway, based on the comments in here, its going to be another interesting season.

  174. Mike Boone says:

No ALN till the regular season

  175. Chuck says:

What do you expect? A good share of the posters on here couldn’t get that little fact straight, either!

  176. SeriousFan09 says:

Exit suggested Price was lit up by the AHLers on the Boston roster, he wasn’t, it was the regulars.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  177. Shiloh says:

Arbitration? You mean the process where good young players on the rise earn their new paycheques? I’m sure Halak would have done well at arbitration – because he played so great. And we certainly don’t want that in a goalie now, do we? Funeral-Face Gauthier could have found the dollars to pay Halak if he made it a priority. Halak’s salary is close to the total of Price plus Eller and Halperin. Maybe we would have had to keep Moore instead of Pouliot, but if they really wanted to keep Halak they could have. They chose Price instead, even though Halak was the superior goalie in every aspect of the game. Hope they’re right.

  178. nova scotia vees says:

Price is AWFUL, but then again what did we expect?  He spent his summer ropin’ calves.  A Bruin of course, is a small bear…Carey needed to practice roping “bears”!  On second thought…perhaps he should have PRACTICED finding aa way to stop pucks.  Excuses…so many excuses.  Please…. I could have stopped the “deflected” first goal.  If every goalie let in a weak wrist shot that was slightly deflected, the league would be filled with 50 goal scorers.  Mark my words…Price will have his contract bought out by next year.

  179. Chuck says:

From Georges comments, it sounds like they were manning up for not getting the job done in front of their goalie.

  180. Chuck says:

    Maybe he’s a glutton for punishment.  :)

  181. Omit says:

You have no point because there is no point in a pre-season game.  Get it?

These games are for tuning up for the regular season.  Get it?

These games are to evaluate the team’s prospects.  Get it?

These games don’t mean a bloody thing.  Get it?

Let me know what you don’t understand about pre-season games and I’ll gladly explain it to you.

  182. Chuck says:

Yup… and one of your goal scorers in tonight’s game would have been playing somewhere else this evening.

  183. showey47 says:

Considering the state income tax in missouri ranges from 1.5 to 6%. I’d say he would have wanted substantially more to stay in montreal.

  184. ManApart says:

If management wanted him they would have traded Price and signed him. Simple as that. They never wanted Halak as the #1. This was the case ever since he came to Montreal. That’s why they never even talked to him after the last game against Philly.

  185. EricInStL says:

Basically who cares about tonight. If Price sucks all of the pre-season then so be it. Finish out of the playoffs, whatever.

    It counts as of october.

  186. SeriousFan09 says:

If Pekka Rinne (an inferior goalie to Halak or Price) and oft-injured Kari Lehtonen were awarded 6.6 and 10.75 million $ contracts based on their play, what do you think the arbitrator would have given to Halak? Niemi got 2.75 for playing behind the best defence in the NHL last season. Arbitration is how an NHL team gets screwed these days, everyone gets more than they deserve.

  190. RiverviewCanadien says:

As much as I agree with the team not playing well in the beginning, but come on. It takes time for skaters to feel each other out. In nets you do one job, and he sucked at that job tonight (3 goals on 5 shots) there is no way to sugar coat that sh_t performance.

Can’t give up the kid though…so much is banked on him.

  191. habs fan from stonyplain says:

Jaro had a crap game last night, like I have said if Price isnt playing like dryden or plante he is garbage, its one damn game. Its preseason but here we go Jaro is god and price is crap so when Price gets better what are you going to say then, when he leads this team are you going to be like everyone else and jump on the band wagon!

  192. twilighthours says:

I would happily have a Cup-winning goalie as my #1 for 2.75 mil.  It’s shocking that you wouldn’t.

  193. habs fan from stonyplain says:

  195. SeriousFan09 says:

I’d prefer one that did his part for more than 1 of the playoff series to win the Cup.

Keith, Campbell, Seabrook, Sopel and Hjalmarsson made it happen, not Niemi. I didn’t see a ton of NHL teams falling overthemselves to clear cap space when he became UFA either.

  196. avatar_58 says:

Awesome Gorges and Gill audio – that’s what I want to hear, leaders saying “wtf is your problem?” to fans

  197. K-hab25 says:

Oddly, I agree with you, to an extent. Price played like crap for sure, but you can’t possibly be saying how the team plays in front of him doesn’t effect his “one job”, are you?

  198. ManApart says:

So preseason games are good enough to evaluate if a young player is good enough to play in the NHL and is ready to be on the team come opening day, but when it comes to seeing if Price is looking good after being relegated to a back-up last season, then it doesn’t count? Sure you know what you are saying there O?

  199. Exit716 says:

They paid top dollar for a good show and got crap from the goalie?

  200. Exit716 says:

Goals shouldn’t go in from 65 feet out in the first 90 seconds of the game, deflected or not.

  201. Chuck says:

See, that’s the thing. No one seems to care WHY it turned out to be a rough night for him.

Carey was scored on twice on odd-man rushes in a preseason game, and folks are ready to toss him to the wolves.

Rask was scored on twice on odd-man rushes in a preseason game, and they’re ready to hand him the Vezina.

The only difference for Carey was a a deflected goal off of an odd-mad rush and a screened shot on the powerplay; the number of shots against to put him in those situations isn’t the issue.

Our screened shot hit the post twice, and bounced out. Theirs found it’s way just inside the post. Sh*t happens; next time maybe the bounces go our way.

  202. ManApart says:

For the big French superstar center, Gainey was even ready to sacrifice Price. Doesn’t change the fact that Gauthier/Gainey didn’t want Halak here before he won over the #1 job as well as after.

  203. JasonM says:

Alex Auld will be our starter come December.

I kid. But seriously folks…. it’s a pre-season game. And the defence was ugly but let’s be honest, if Carey Price didn’t expect this he was fooling himself when Halak got traded. He’ll gave to not only play the best hockey in his life but he’ll also have to win the hearts of a good chunk of unhappy fans who aren’t happy on who was chosen.

Let’s see what happens next game…. this Palushaj kid though… wow. I LIKE!

  204. habs001 says:

the main problem that this team may still have is too many players who give effort but are life and death to score 6-8 goals a year.

  205. SUMO says:

Good thing you are veteran with a one-way contract. I’m sure Kevin Mio would be in Hamilton is he negelcted an assignment πŸ˜‰

  206. Alirio says:

If you don’t want to get booed, don’t play like you couldn’t care less. This kid has been nonchalant for too long. If you can’t take the heat, go play in Tampa!

Play like you care, play like you deserve to be there, and no one will boo you.

Crapping all over those that boo as though they’re Nazis is B.S. IF you’re not ready, don’t play.

    I’ve made a huge mistake…

  207. Chuck says:

That doesn’t make any sense. If deflected shots shouldn’t go in in the first 90 seconds of the game, then they shouldn’t go in for the other 58:30, either.

And the deflected shot was from in close, not 65 feet.

  208. showey47 says:

Didn’t know hortons goal came from outside the blueline. Since the goal line to the blue line is 64 feet.

  209. G-Man says:

Preseason- no matter how poor the performances were, it just doesn’t matter. Good shot count and Rask being wasted for a full exhibition game when 30 minutes would have done. Nice to see some rookies and extra effort. 3rd period was fun to watch and Rask was solid. 4 goals on 8 shots will count in October. Right now, it’s water under the bridge. Shake it off and everyone work hard in practice.

  210. SUMO says:

I have a suggested headline for you or Pat Hickey; :”A tale of two goaltenders”

Tonight at the Bell Centre we saw the only 2 goaltenders picked in the first round of the 2005 NHL entry draft; #5 (Carey Price) & #21 (Tuuka Rask). Both were hightly touted draft picks and viewed as potential saviours for their respective fanchises. Both are big and athletic but one paid his dues in the minors and had an all-star veteran netminder to mentor him (Tim Thomas) while the other was rushed through the system and handed every opportunity along the way.

Rask was expected to resolve the goaltending hole in TO but not Boston. When he was traded, Bos already had Tim Thomas minding the net so he could be developed slowly int he AHL with NO pressure to be the man between the pipes. Rask had 2 full seasons in the AHL before he was eased into the NHL. His maturity and development to this point is a result of good mangement and tempered expectations. It would be interesting to see what his development would have been like if he was stuck in TO.

In Careys situation he is set up to fail; everything was handed to him NOT because he earned it or beat out Huet or Halak for the job. the fans and the management expected him to be Roy or Dryden not Steve Penny. There are no more excuses for Carey he has to deliver every night or he is villified.

So here we are in September 2010. Tuuka Rask looks to be the next dominant goalie in the NHL whereas Price is still trying to find his game. I’m still a believer in Price but tonight is more of a lesson on how poorly the Habs management have failed to draft and develop their 1st rounders. Price has all the tools to be the goaltender of his generation but to this point he has shown none of that. A look across the ice at Rask and you have to wonder what might have been….

  211. likehoy says:

    tinordi was terrible

i hope he has a good season in the OHL cause i can’t see keeping david fischer being any worse than what tinordi was on the ice tonight.

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  212. showey47 says:

Yes it does. With gainey trading price for vinny it says they were more then OK with giving halak the #1 job even before last season started. But keep reaching.

  213. Hagar says:

Agree. I’m a HUGE Price fan and this game doesn’t matter. That said, he’s gotta learn to suck it up and not have everyone in the organization defend him after being booed. Taking boos for performing poorly is part of the job description of the Montreal Canadiens starting netminder. He’s gotta let this stuff roll off his back. Sticks and stones and all that. “It’s my goal to lead the league in 4 minute roughing things” -Scott Gomez

  214. RiverviewCanadien says:

Seriously Chuck, I never said anything about Rask owning the Vezina trophy and I am not tossing Price to the wolves, read my other posts. You have to admit though Rask was good, anyone who knows hockey can’t contest that.

So Price gets scored on during a PP (great shot though) while being screened, and that is ok in your eyes, no goalie in the NHL could have stopped it. But did you see the save Rask made on the turnaround shot from Spacek, that was screened as well…but he stopped the puck, let me guess, you could have stopped it blindfolded and hog tied?

Anything that Price did stop, bounced around more than a chipmunk on acid trapped in Mr.Dressup’s tickle trunk.

And I have already posted, it was a pre-season game, it meant nothing. He had a bad outing and his team mates admitted he had a bad night. If you want to talk about people trashing him (maybe you want to start an argument) but you are talking to the wall my friend. Better luck next time at fishing.

  215. Chuck says:

You have to admit, there is a sizeable portion of Montreal hockey fans who know little more about the nuances of the game than the final score.

  216. showey47 says:

I gotta wait till feb.18th to see tinordi play here in sudbury. Looking forward to it.

  217. Omit says:

It’s obvious that you didn’t understand my comments.  Evaluating a prospect is a bit more complex that your simple statement, since most of them will not be there on opening day or during the season, for that matter.

Now, on to your intense hatred for Price.  You either didn’t see the game, in which case you shouldn’t comment.  Or, you saw the game and you don’t understand what you saw. Three goals would have been scored on any goalie and the 4th one was questionable.  And I will put up Price’s stats for the last 3 years against the vast majority of goalies of the last 40 years at his exact age.

  218. Chuck says:

Do you honestly believe that Price is hanging out on the back of the locker room with Gill, Georges and Cammy and telling them to defend him from the boos?

They were asked those questions by the media, and answered them as best they could. As they said, it’s tough to hear one guy being booed when the rest of the team deserves the heat, too.

Strange… Spacek has that horrible giveaway leading to the 4th goal, yet it’s Price that’s booed the next time that he touches the puck. Go figure.

  219. SeriousFan09 says:

I’m sticking with the positives from tonight:

Jarred Tinordi played against men tonight and did not look out of place, when he fills out, he’ll be a freight train with strong skating and a pretty good outlet pass.

Louis Leblanc started off nervous, but by the end showed his chops against the Bruins, he bulks up in the Q and AHL for the next 2 years and he’ll be a force.

Benoit Pouliot’s off-season conditioning paid off, he rocked a Bruin with a hit, skated towards the net and was much stronger on his feet than last season. Driving the net, he can score 20+ this season.

Aaron Palushaj proved he can keep up with an NHL line, if called up, he will be a good fill-in at the least.

Tomas Plekanec looks like he stepped out of mid-season from 09-10.

Jeff Halpern, Tom Pyatt and Max Lapierre? Energy line JM can throw together in a pinch for impact.

Carey Price, bad first game? Yes but better now and he’s got a few more pre-season matches coming up to shake off the rust and establish his headspace. He wasn’t that great in last year’s pre-season either, than he served up the first two wins of the season with outstanding efforts.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  220. RiverviewCanadien says:

Price HAS to be prepared, what would he have expected tonight? What did you expect tonight? I know I expected Price to play better than .600 though (6/10) With no Markov, Gomez, Gionta, Kostitsyn, Markov, Subban, Hamrlik, etc, etc. I knew the team would be weaker, especially in the beginning.

  221. ManApart says:

I wouldn’t have mock cheered Price if I was at the game.  If he’s still doing this by 25 games then fine, but he needs to be given a little slack for now. I don’t have much faith in the guy, but I feel bad for him. Management has given him the equivalent of a suicide pass. They’ve never ligitimized his position on the team by making him earn it. After Halak snatched the job away from him and became a Hero, management dumps him and props Price up as the #1 again, getting maybe one of the worst back-ups in the league behind him, to ensure no further contraversy. The majority of fans want their hero, who fought like a dog to become the undisputed #1. They feel they have been cheated, because Price has not earned their respect. It’s not his fault that management did what they did. He not only has to live up to being the so called “franchise”, but now also to Halak’s now mythic playoff performance. Even Halak himself probably couldn’t follow that up. I’m afraid that Price needs to be something he does not have the ability to be, for him to win in this tough situation.

  222. showey47 says:

Agreed chuck,if there was a goat tonight it was spacek. He also deflected the puck past price. But raking spacek over the coals doesn’t sell papers or get website hits like raking carey does.

  223. RiverviewCanadien says:

Maybe Price should be more accountable to the media and fans, sorry to say but media and hockey goes hand in hand in MontrΓ©al. Why not come out and answer the dumb questions when you lose, everyone else does.

  224. quentin_stuckley says:

agreed.  i wonder, do some of you fans watch the habs hoping that carey will fall on his face just so you can post “i told you so.”?  i feel bad for carey.  it seems nothing short of winning the stanley cup via 16 consecutive shutouts will ever be good enough for some people, people that LOVE the team, supposedly.  i do understand that good players are supposed to play well, that’s what they are paid to do, but i also believe you can’t say you support a team then throw players on that team repeatedly into the meat grinder.  it’s counter-productive.  that’s what you do to the opposition.  it US against THEM, whatever US happens to be for the season.  meaning halak is gone, he’s not coming back, ever.  done.  roy is gone, hell, the era of hab dominance is done.  over.  we’re just one of 30 nhl teams now, and in this age of the NHL 1 team can beat any of the other 29 teams.  carey will win his fair share of games.  he will also lose some games.  some games he’ll be fantastic.  others he’ll be less than fantastic.  are any of us better than that?  i bet less than 2 percent of the posters here could do what carey price can do, or what any of these players can do.  it so easy to pick these players to death when you don’t have to spend one second in their shoes.

  225. Bill H says:

Good post SF.  Unfortunately I missed the game so I will take your word for it.

  226. SeriousFan09 says:

What game were you watching? Tinordi was easily the best non-roster D out there tonight.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  227. Chuck says:

Not fishing, and I didn’t mean you specifically… but if you’ve read some of the posts on here tonight, you’ll get the idea.

Rask was indeed very good tonight. He played a more sound game then Price. But it’s still funny how we hold the two goaltenders to different standards.

If you’re screened, it means that you can’t see the shot. If you make the save, it’s because the puck happened to be on a trajectory to hit you. You put yourself in position depending on where the shot is expected to come from, and hope that it doesn’t find a hole. Sometimes you have to play the percentages. And the percentages worked in Rask’s favour tonight.

  228. Habitant in Surrey says:

…let’s take the positive first …We will have a different dynamic this season …significantly more skill and depth …as well as identified character, balance and solidarity as a Team
…clearly, in the wings, We have real talent percolating, awaiting opportunity if any of Our regulars disappoint or are injured
…I will be VERY surprised if the Montreal Canadiens are not a playoff team
…after only one exhibition game Our Achilles Heel, the negative, is represented by Our goaltending
…will We be let down by shoddy goals allowed that will undermine all the positive ?
…it was not that Carey allowed 4 goals in 9 shots on goal …but objectively, it was HOW He was beaten …seemingly lackadaisical, waving at the puck unfocused and seemingly without any reflexive muscle twitch, either with His legs or glove
…not appearing post-game indicates Carey is already dealing with major psychological and emotional stress that is magnified by the carry-over during the previous 2 seasons
…I am a Habs Fan that wants to be a Carey Price Fan too …I think that if this was happening while He was a Pheonix Coyote or a member of almost any other NHL team, Carey Price has WHAT it takes to turn it around
…as a Montreal Canadien it will not be as easy
…optimistically, the Montreal Canadiens will not be a Team that will frequently allow 40+ shots as They did last season …We will be significantly tighter defensively, controlling offensively much more of the play
…this is what We must be patient to allow to play out …let the Team meld around Carey, and vice versa
…if You as Fans of Our Habs have any remaining credibility …do NOT destroy Carey Price

  229. andrewberkshire says:

    What game were you watching?

  230. likehoy says:

that’s not saying much considering st-denis was the worst player on the ice that he makes bergeron look like a superstar

tinordi was terrible…he messed up every pass he made, he got beat by speed on the outside multiple times…and it’s embarrassing when a 6’5 blake wheeler makes tinordi look slow..

tinordi also failed pretty badly when spacek pinched in from the point and tinorid over-committed to spacek’s side and couldn’t turn to skate backwards and his momentum was going away from the play making a 2 on 1 really just a 1 on carey.

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  231. andrewberkshire says:

He should be accountable to his team, that’s all I care about as a fan. Nothing he would have said to the media would make a difference, and he’s a terrible interview anyway.

  232. ManApart says:

Purely by default. Maybe they would have brought in someone else anyway. If they weren’t even willing to talk to Halak after what he did last season, even after Price’s poor season, then you know they never saw him as the future goaltender. If you can’t see that, then you’re more blind than I had previously thought.

  233. Chuck says:

See, the kid can’t win. If he gets into the post game scrum and the questions about booing come up, what is he supposed to say? And by not coming into the scrum, people like you call him unaccountable for his actions.

So not only does he get raked over the coals for what happens on the ice, but also what happens after. No wonder why he’s want to take a pass on question period.

  234. likehoy says:

i was watching the game as if it was an NHL game..

what are you expecting? tinordi’s 18 years old, he’s going to suck to start and he did…

i wish him well in sudbury but he was terrible tonight…Louis Leblanc wasn’t great either, he was positionally sound, but wasn’t great with the puck…tyler seguin was invisible…if i didn’t know he was starting the game, i would have never guessed he was playing the game.

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  235. Da Hema says:

Articulate thoughts. There does seem to be an emerging view that Price’s development was poorly managed by the Canadiens. One could say the same for Latendresse and Pacioretty.

I admire Gill and the team for standing up for Price during the interviews, but all of this is certainly an ominous sign. I am somewhat bothered that the players expect the fans to treat Price like some 8 year-old boy. The fans have the right to express their displeasure–but I genuinely hope they do not respond to Price like they did with Brisebois. Yet the fact the team is shielding Price after tonight’s game reveals to me a player who is unable to handle the pressures of professional sport. The team claims Price has matured, but they treat him like a child who must be sheltered from the viscissitudes of sport…and life. None of this looks very encouraging to me.

“There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge….”

    –Hunter S. Thompson

  236. quentin_stuckley says:

unfortunately, if he ever did that, which would be awesome, he’d be lambasted by the media for having crepe thin skin.  and that the fans have every right to vocalize their distaste whenever a mistake is made.  which they do, of course.  you’d just think fans would have more class than that.

it would be nice to see JM or PG make like bob gainey did for breezer back when and call the fans out for b.s. like this.  i mean, the last time i looked at the standings the bruins still have zero points.  what a second, what’s this…ALL THIRTY TEAMS HAVE ZERO POINTS AFTER TONIGHT!?!?!?!?!  how oddly strange.

  237. likehoy says:

hopefully by then he’ll be on his way to developing into a sound defenseman.

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  238. showey47 says:

Awesome interview by gill. “having a hard time playing against the bruins, never mind playing against the fans. I just with they would help us” and “shouldn’t let fans who don’t know what going on bother him”. My 2 favourite quotes.

  239. showey47 says:

So by sudbury do you mean london? lol

  240. bp says:

There’s a number of teams who dealt with bigger salary cap issues then signing both Pleks and Halak. Gauthier could have buried Hammer or Kostitsyn in Europe, made a salary dump trade, signed a few vets for league minimum or found some other creative solution. Price was simply the organizations guy, Halak was the fans. Remains to be seen who was right.

  241. andrewberkshire says:

I don’t think they expect them to treat Price like an 8 year old boy, they expect him to be treated like a member of the team that they cheer for. Obviously Gill doesn’t like to hear boos for teammates in his own building, as I’m sure most professional athletes with pride would agree with. It’s classless, especially in a preseason game. Leafs fans did the same thing yesterday when Ottawa blew them out, is that the kind of fans we want to be?

  242. Chuck says:

Hell, I wish that if folks want to lay blame, then they should dish it out where it’s deserved.

Carey didn’t play well tonight, but he was far from the only reason that we were down 4-0… yet he’s the one taking all of the crap. No wonder guys like Gill, Georges, Cammy, etc. would be frustrated.

  243. likehoy says:

woops you’re right, you confused me with the sudbury comment down below…

i was scratching my head thinking he was with another team.

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  244. andrewberkshire says:

Except Price DID beat out Huet for the job.

And while Rask is an excellent goaltender, he looks a lot better than he is because Julien has the Bruins playing one of if not the best 5 man defensive unit in hockey today. Same reason Thomas won a Vezina.

  245. SeriousFan09 says:

He made several good outlet passes I found and of course he’s going to get beaten with speed while playing against professionals, he’s 18 years old and he’s still getting used to skating with that monster body of his! He still used his reach and made some good poke checks and cut off the Bruins player when he was coming in alone on Carey.

He made mistakes, but that was his first professional game in his career and he battled to cover up his mistakes as well. He also had some good positioning in the offensive zone on that game when it came to keeping the puck in.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  246. Chuck says:

I couldn’t have said that better myself.

  247. ManApart says:

Makes no sense. You evaluate a player in preseason, then it’s equally valid to evaluate the goaltender. I have no hatred for Price. It’s not personal. I just don’t think he’s very good, that’s all. You and all the other excuse makers can go on all you want. The guy played bad and that’s the bottom line. That’s pretty much all I was saying. I’m concerned that the guy hasn’t been very good for the last 2 years and after the whole summer, things have not changed in his first 30 mins of play. We’ll see next time if he at least can play an average game.

  248. showey47 says:

“Maybe they would have brought in someone else?” Now you are basing your whole arguement on a “maybe”? Too funny. Didn’t know common sense made someone blind. But keep trying.

  249. andrewberkshire says:

How was he terrible? He was solid physically, made very few mis-reads and kept it simple for the most part. As for Leblanc, he got better every shift, drove to the net and tried to create chances. I’m not sure what you’re expecting out of guys who aren’t NHL ready. They didn’t suck, far from it.

  250. Caper says:

The negativity from those fans at the game and on this site is baffling. One pre season game is just that. I don’t get it. I’m also disappointed that Cary did not speak after the game and will beinterested to see what he has to say tomorrow. His performace off the ice is more of a concern to me than that on the ice.

  251. Chuck says:

Personally, I don’t think that Price should worry one iota about earning the respect of the “fans” who want him to fall on his face.

He’s here to play goal for the Montreal Canadiens, not to appease the beer-fueled lemmings in the upper reaches of the arena. The ONLY people that he has to be accountable to is his teammates and the rest of the organization. If he has their support, then that’s really all that matters.

  252. showey47 says:

Reminded me of the 2009 playoffs against the bruins when price was being booed and was blamed for the series lost while the team in front of him only scored 5 or 6 goals in 4 games.

  253. Chuck says:

“…he served up the first two wins of the season with outstanding efforts.”

And as a thanks he got benched for game three! Holy goalie mismanagement!

  254. ManApart says:

I agree with your point about being bothered by players trying to tell the fans not to show their frustration with Price. I think they should hold back since it’s only preseason, but at the same time, if he played good to excellent, there would be no issue, end of story. The continually fails to do the job the past while and it’s the fans fault for not keeping quiet about it? Both Lafleur and Roy were booed in this town after all the great things they did. If they can get booed after having HOF careers, then certainly Price can be after how he’s played the past 2 years or so.

  255. darcy1 says:

someone definately needs to stand up and say something.. gill’s comments were a good start, but not enough.. It needs to come from someone all the fans will respect (even the boo birds).. We don’t need to be running goalies out of town because they have a bad preseason game

  256. bp says:

Good post. I think management continues to get this wrong. They continue to put Price in situations where it doesn’t do him any favours. They should know by now how many of the fans feel and will react but they’re simply too obstinate to manage the situation better.

Did Price really need to start tonight? A lot of other organizations are starting their 3rd and 4th stringers. Give the fans some crappy goaltending from Auld and Sanford, save Price for the road or when you actually ice a team close to your regular season team. instead Price is hiding in the locker room and there’s already a smell to the season.

Gainey could have avoided the issues with Price and his mock salute to the fans two years ago by giving Jaro a single playoff game in which he would either have saved the day or been peppered as badly as Price was. Carey really didn’t need the experience of another tough loss with an injured spent team in front of him while giving Jaro a chance would have diffused a lot of the fan anger.  Plus it would have saved Price from having to sit through that silly press conference about thoroughbreds and baking bread.

  257. likehoy says:

as i’ve said, this i watched the game as an NHL game, not as a game for rookies to make mistakes.

there’s a difference between a team that’s hoping to compete, and a team that  will compete and i want the habs to be a team that can compete this year.

i’m watching the pre-season with a different mindset, it’s been too long since we’ve entered a season following a good playoff run without actually having to hope some kid makes the team to save us

     – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  258. Da Hema says:

Andrew: I wasn’t at the game, so I cannot claim I know whether or not the fans overreacted, but I think you are overreacting by comparing those fans disappointed with the kinds of goals Carey tends to let in with Toronto fans. I explicitly said I hope the fans do not act viciously towards Price as the pre-season and subsequent regular season progresses. We all want the players to be successful and to fulfill their potential. That said, hiding Price after this game is not a good sign. From an outsider’s perspective, I makes me think Price is a weak person unable to muster the inner strength to use others’ doubts as a source of personal inspiration and desire to prove people wrong. That is the adult thing to do, and indeed the only way ultimately to silence one’s detractors.

“There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge….”

  259. likehoy says:

he’s prob going to be more of a hal gill type player than a pronger..what i don’t like is that we used a 1st rounder for a guy that needs 3-4 years to develop…much like fischer and fischer didn’t even develop…i would have hoped more to get a player further down the road in his development

    – I support Carey Price as the Number 1 Goalie!

  260. andrewberkshire says:

Very fair analysis, but as far as I’m concerned fan support doesn’t matter, as long as he has the respect of his team it’s fine.

  261. avatar_58 says:

Who cares, f them. They seem to forget their hero let in 3 goals in like 12 shots. I supposed he’s exempt from critique since it’s a different team?

  262. Chuck says:

From their comments, I didn’t take them as shielding Price; rather, a frustration that a certain contingency of fans don’t pay enough attention to spread their displeasure around as it’s truly deserved. Instead, they sh*t on the kid for mistakes that his teammates make that directly lead to goals.

And Hab fans are supposed to be the smartest fans in hockey.

  263. Habitant in Surrey says:

…1000 % agreed …was not a bright decision to start Carey

  264. andrewberkshire says:

See on the other hand if Price DID speak to the media, the story would have been either; Price says “These things happen, bad games happen, I’ll move on” [Headline reads: Price doesn’t care enough]; Price says “I’m disappointed that I played poorly, I really want to win with this team” [Headline: Price is overemotional, cares too much]; Price says “The booing doesn’t bother me, I tune it out” [Headline: Price is checked out of Montreal, doesn’t respect fans]: Price says “The booing gets to me of course, but hopefully over the year I’ll give them good reasons to stop booing” [Headline: Price rattled by booing; Mentally weak between the pipes].

This how sports journalism works in Montreal, especially for Price. He can’t win no matter what, so why bother speaking to the media?

  265. showey47 says:

Don’t forget, these are the same fans that chanted “carbo.carbo” after the habs were eliminated by the bruins 2 season’s ago.  The same coach that can’t get another gig and led the u-18 team to a 6th place finish or something.

  266. andrewberkshire says:

In fairness, Roy left when he was booed, so I’m not sure how that defends the fans in any way. Obviously it was Tremblay’s fault and not the fans, but they added to the emotion of the situation, and Roy was an emotional competitor.

  267. SeriousFan09 says:

Like who? Habs moved up to pick at 22nd overall and anyone outside the lottery position is generally a 3-year project minimum to begin with. What’s with the Fisher comparisons anyway? Tinordi was more or less picked where he should have been, Fischer was the stretch pick in 2006. He’s got a good record, Tinordi was the captain of the US Under-18 squad on their very impressive NTDP which is becoming a factory for US-born prospects.

Tinordi’s already a better skater than Gill, give him time. Obviously he’s not NHL ready but this was hardly a bad game for the kid.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  268. ManApart says:

Ok smart guy, Management wanted Halak as #1 all along. They just went with Price as the starter for 2 1/2 years until he couldn’t even win a game, because they were saving Halak as a secret weapon, then when he put on a semi-legendary playoff performance they traded him to St. Louis, without even speaking to him, because John Davidson blackmailed them with x rated pics involving Youppi…. I mean get real man.

  269. SeriousFan09 says:

No one is expecting Tinordi or Leblanc to make this team, this is just giving them a cup of coffee with the big club and seeing how they perform against some NHL players, they’ll be back with their junior clubs sometime next week. Avtsin will be in the Hammer, only prospects making the team are Eller and Subban and that’s it.

This is just seeing what the Habs might bring out in 2-3 years.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  270. Mr. Biter says:

Could not watch or listen to the game but 888 posts( and counting) for the 1st. exhibition game  has got to be a record. Probably Price’s and JM’s worst nightmare came through tonight reading the 1st page of posts. Home game and a bad game it seems but hey it’s exhibition so lets live with it. If this happens when the regular season starts then we are in BIG trouble (woe to Carey 1st regular season game at the bell center if it’s a bad one). I have been a CP supporter so i’m not jumping ship but it’s up to him now to “show us the money” and if he can play with the big boys again.

It seems to me his downward spiral started when he rushed back from injury to play in the all star game , got shelled and has not recovered even though it was 2 years ago. Prehaps he should not have played (management’s fault?) or as a young player wanted to play (against his and the teams better judgement) in the All Star game.

BTW JH also lost his 1st. game this year and  also did not set St. Louis on fire.

  271. Da Hema says:

Your assumption is Price chose not to address the media. Perhaps. I agree he is typically in a difficult position with respect to the media. The fact is, he had and has options. If the media glare is too overwhelming for him, Price could ask (or could have asked) the team quietly to trade him elsewhere. Carey must use all the detractors as a motivating force to improve his on-ice performance. If he cannot do this, he will not have a very long career. Most posters here think Montreal is the only city in the NHL tough on its hockey players. The glare and scrutiny is a fact of life almost everywhere. Look at what the fans did with Joe Thornton in Boston? Vancouver fans were pretty rough on Kirk Maclean. If Carey is looking to avoid public scrutiny, he clearly chose the wrong profession.

“There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge….”

    –Hunter S. Thompson

  272. Hagar says:

No, I don’t honestly believe that. That said, If I was Carey (and sometimes I like to pretend I am) I’d tell my teammates to not defend me since it makes me look like a helpless child and only serves to encouage it. There’s a portion of Canadiens fans that love to eat the weak and some of them always show up at Habs games. Carey must’ve known this when he declared he’d be happy to be our starting goalie during the summer after we had traded Halak. I can understand why he’d be a little rattled the first time it happened, but by now he should know what to expect and also stop wrongly assuming that the boo birds are suddenly going to change their attitude or give up attending games because a player/gm/coach told them to. There are other parts of your comment I’d like to address but since I’m typing all this on my PS3 w/o a keyboard it’s taking too long for me to bother. Another time. “It’s my goal to lead the league in 4 minute roughing things” -Scott Gomez

  273. ManApart says:

I’m anxious to see Avtsin play. Seems like he may have some real offensive skills and finish to his game and a real hunger to score, which is actually kind of rare. Everyone wants to score, but some guys are desperate to do so. Like Ovie, I. Kovy, Hull, Bure, Neely. I think Cammy also has that.

  274. ManApart says:

LOL, It’s funny that to say anything positive about Price from last season, people always come back to those first 2 OT wins of the season. Oh, and that Nashville game.

  275. showey47 says:

Go drama queen all you want. The fact is right in front of you. When you have 2 young goalies who both want to be number 1,sooner or later one of them gets traded. Last summer it was supposed to be price this past summer it was halak. Nobody knows if halak even wanted to stay or if we would have accepted what he took in st.louis. But halak and his agent pulling the twitter stunt probably pushed him half way out the door. Its over. Stop crying about it. Halak got traded to a team that has nobody to challenge him for the #1 spot, just like price here in montreal. Get real? Is “getting real” whining day in and day out about a trade that happened 3 months ago? Its not our fault you get attached to hockey players like a teenage girl.

  276. Habitant in Surrey says:

…I think Gill, Cammy and Josh were very clear sending a message to Our Meathead Fans …the gratuitist booing of Carey effects the WHOLE Team, not only Carey
…and, if the unnecessary booing gets worse, there will be more than a few of Our Players whom will stop playing for Us, the Fans

  277. andrewberkshire says:

There isn’t a lot of positives to point to from last season for Price. First two games, all of November and the stretch after the olympics until he got pulled in Anaheim.

  278. HabsfaninMA says:

Listen, when the fans pay money to go to games, and when the “#1 goalie” holds out until the last minute to get money he didn’t earn, the fans have a right to boo and get frustrated when said goalie lays an egg. Under the circumstances, Price should have been motivated to play like Rask did last night, but he didn’t. Same ol’ story.

And, if it was just a pre-season game and no big deal, then Price should have been able to face the media.

Despite his physical gifts, Price simply does not have the mental toughness to play in Montreal. This is nothing new, and the team will pay for it.

  279. K-hab25 says:

Exactly why I want him to be the captain, but his contract and age, probably make it not probable.

  280. K-hab25 says:

So than you are saying that the other 18 guys don’t have any effect on Price’s “one job”, just making sure I understood you right.

  281. Xtrahabsfan says:

This B.S. about the fans must stop1 If you crap the bed it’s not the fault of  fans! As a Goalie your job is to keep your team in da freaking game man and try to get the win! Do any of you see this from Price cause I sure as sheit don’t.The masterminds who have set this up are going to get us the no:1 pick and spin doctor it too!And for all the Price  fans that have lambasted any one for their  truthful opinions regarding Carey’s shortcomings that first period was for you!!!lol

  282. G-Man says:

You assume to know the minds of all the sports editors in Montreal. You assume waaaaay too much. It was a pre-season game that does not matter. Price hopefully knows this and will be better next time.

If this were January, I would care more. But, a game with nowhere near the regular rosters of each team is what it is: an opportunity to see and assess first-hand how the picks are doing. All the veterans have full dossiers; it’s the kids that count right now. Worrying or fretting over this is hyperbole.

  283. HardHabits says:

Price can do an interview. He can man up. He can say he sucked and that he’ll put in the effort to not suck next time. It’s called taking ownership for one’s actions.

Gill’s laments are going in the opposite direction.

  284. RetroMikey says:

Fans have every right to boo.

Booing has been always a common tradition when you play in Montreal whether at the Bell Centre or the old old Montreal Forum or Jubilee Arena.

Ask any alumni who played for the Habs if they were ever booed and they will answer with a yes but they performed better after knowing the fans were on their backs.

If you can’t play in Montreal with the high expectation of the passionate fans of the club, all I have to say is…walk out then.

But calling our fans Meatheads, what does that make you?

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  285. CharlieHodgeFan says:

Forget denouncing the fans. Forget denouncing the stressed kid in nets. Forget whining about Price not giving interviews after the exhibition game.

Put Gauthier on skates for five minutes before every game, and have him skate around the Bell Centre. Or put his gob on the scoreboard if you’re worried about having to scrape the beer and cola off the ice. If you think the trade was stupid, take your concerns to the men who made that trade (if you can find them). The players are just trying to do the job they were hired for.

Let Price get his rhythm and find his game. Wait to see what level that game will be. It’s a comeback story. We have a seemingly fragile goalie? He’s the only goalie we have? Grin and bear it, and support the guy in his attempt to become a reliable NHL goaltender.

There was a lot of good in that game last night. I’m looking forward to seeing these young guys as they develop. But if I go to the game and boo Price, I’m almost guaranteeing some of these young, talented guys will have to be traded for a journeyman starting goalie at some point in the season. It’s not a clever place to go.

  286. quentin_stuckley says:

i understand the booing, for me the mock cheering is worse than booing.  it embarassed roy enough to raise his arms in response, then race to the owner of the team and told him he’s done playing in montreal.  then two stanley cups later….

does anyone know if price stayed in the locker room after his 30 minutes were done?  does anyone think that the bruins kept rask in for the full tilt because they were getting out played, and with another goalie in net they might have lost this one?  julien knows this town, too.  any loss could result in a snowball effect of derision and distraction.  that could benefit a divisional rival down the road, n’est-ce pas?

  287. Fairfax says:

Price didn’t even go to the locker room after his 30 minutes were done… he stayed on the bench.

He was right there to hear the fans go crazy after every save Sanford made. Idiots. I was at the game. I was as disappointed with and concerned about Price’s performance as anyone else. But I’ll never understand booing (or mock cheering) your own players… how the hell does that help them or your team?

  288. dhenry1234 says:

This is rediculous. What ever happened to habs fans being THE BEST FANS IN THE WORLD? If we were trully the best fans we would not be booing our own team in our own building in a little preseason game. I hate to break it to everyone but like it or not, Carey Price is a Montreal Canadien and if you boo him on a regular basis like what happened last night it is going to affect not only Price, but your entire Montreal Canadiens.

It’s not like im saying don’t boo a bad call by a ref, or stupid Komisarek. All i’m saying is to lay off The kid a bit and support the team.

How would you feel if you were at your job, and you screwed up enough for you to think to yourself “FU@%!” And then at the same time while you’re pissed off that you screwed up, 21273 people all booed you for screwing up?

Everyone needs to just go crazy on possitivity the next time you see Carey Price in net.

Enough of this booing of Montreal Canadiens. That’s for Leafs fans to do.

    -peace out.

  289. Wamsley01 says:

He didn’t hold out! Half the leagues restricted free agents waited until late August early September to sign.

Nothing like basing an opinion on zero substance.

  290. saskhabfan says:

Having never had the chance to see a game at the forum. Were the fans at least smart enough to boo who ever was responsible for a goal or did they just boo dryden or whoever else was in net out of drunken stupidity?

Leafstv “telling their fans they deserve to win for over 40 years”

  291. jpinjurylaw1 says:

This is the pros, not the juniors from 6 years ago.   With only Sanford and Auld behind him, we don’t the luxury of giving Price the benefit of the doubt.  Everybody wants him to succeed, true enough, but it is most important that the team succeed.  All the other teams know Price is weak mentally and gets rattled, this is going to be an extremely long season.  The team needs to figure out what to do about this problem (Eller and another prospect for Halak?)

  292. Hammer says:

Its only an exhibition game!! Has no one watched the NFL or MLB in preseason. Noone boos Vlad when he swings two feet above a breaking ball in March. No ones boos AP when he runs for the sidelines in august. Why  rail on a goalie in September. I have cheered for this team for over 40 years, but this is getting pathetic. It is what happens in Feb and March that matters. Give the guy a chance. It is not his fault that PG made the decision to trade Halak. People will not be happy until they run this guy out of town.

  293. danedmunds says:

if people are mad at players performance then spacek should be thrown under the bus too. hopefully spacek bought price a beer for 2 goals that he caused

  294. Praj12 says:

Christ even the Gazette writers are idiots. Give the kid a break man. All this negative talk from the french press and the english press is so BS its sickening to associate myself with you “HABS” fans. Get on the wagon or shut up and F off to another team for christs sake. You “habs” fans need to move to toronto.

  295. Praj12 says:

“He was unlucky … but not very good, either.”

How the hell would you know this, were you behind the mask trying to see the puck and make the save. As gorges said, we all need to get behind this team and start the season off right with positive energy from the get go!! The players feed off of the emotions coming down from the fans so the fans do have an impact on the energy levels of the players no matter what they say.

  296. aemarchand11 says:

Doesn’t make him anything, like it or not we have a large contingency of meat headed fans.

    Go Habs Go!

  297. HabsfaninMA says:

Oh, excuse me for using the wrong wording. He waited until the last minute to sign a contract because he wanted his money. Everyone was signed at that point, except him. The funny thing is that he never even earned that contract.

  298. HabsfaninMA says:

Oh wah! Everyone is complaining about the meanie fans. Hey, management put Price in this position by making him the “entitled one,” even though he’s yet to earn anything. Now, management can deal with the fans. News flash – when fans pay big bucks in a bad economy to see a game, they have every right to boo a bad performance, and personally, I didn’t find the fans’ reaction surprising. Price will be under A LOT of pressure. This could get really ugly.

  299. kingjwill says:

Can’t wait for the season to start again.  Just moved to Miami but I’ll be watching all 82 games online!!  One quick question: does anyone know if they’re keeping the same intro song this year? (Coldplay)

  300. New says:

This is so…like weird. Price did not play well in a nothing game. A dozen team mates did not play well either. A bunch of Bruins didn’t play well.

I would have loved it if Price had stood on his head, the kids had been able to contribute more than energy, and the score had been 6-0 for the Montreal Canadiens. But if it had I wouldn’t expect the Bruins to fire Rask, Julien, and the GM. I’d just think “Wow…a little more emphasis and focus in practice…maybe your camp roster is too big…oh well, we’ll see how the season shakes out.”

  301. New says:

I think the poster means it takes two to sign a contract, there are other players that have to be signed, and the Montreal Canadiens are not the Coyotes – they spend it all.

  302. New says:

Naw, it is totally different now. If fans got on the goalie’s case, or any player’s case, they climbed off. They expressed discontent as “Hey, I saw that…you were napping out there.” Now they pick scapegoats and seem to delight in tearing down the team they claim to favor.

  303. Mike Boone says:

Even an idiot can understand the difference between “fan” and “journalist”.

  304. Nina76 says:

I agree with Habitant in Surrey the booing does effect the whole team…………..If you boo our Habs TAKE OFF THE CH SWEATER YOU ARE NOT A FAN…………………… takes the whole team to win not just one………….get a grip……………. BOO JERKS>>>>IDIOTS………………….STOP DRINKING AT THE GAME YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SEE THE GAME MORE……..if you were SOBER…………….GO MY HABS GO YOU ALL OKAY!!!!!!!  BUNCH OF YOUNG PUNKS!!!!!!!!!

  305. Nina76 says:

Meatheats is a mild name to good for them..they are not ging to walk out they would rather stay & kick a guy when he is down                       GO HABS GO !!!!!!!

  306. StevieRay says:

Missed the game last nite as we are on our way to Dover for the NASCAR race this weekend … high expectations .. but the loss to Boston kinda put a early and I repeat early start to thr year ….

I hope Carey survives .. but he is goning to have to have thick skin !!!

I’m in Boston tonite and heading to New Jersey for 3 nites then to Dover from there …Bogity ..bogoity ..bogoty ..boys ..lets go racing !!!

  307. StevieRay says:

afetr reading the game summary word …. we can’t seem tofinish ..30 + shots .

  308. habinypsi says:

So who does McGratten fight, Conboy or Tinordi?

  309. Bash says:

Ah…herein lies the problem. If he goes after Tinordi we have the beginnings of a legend or perhaps the premature end to a prospect’s season.  He probably kills Conboy but this would be the preferred tilt. Big MAC has nothing to prove against either of these guys.

So many of us have said it before…we need a bonafide enforcer for this small skilled team. BGL was an embarrassment and management gets an F for not replacing him.

“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” (anon)

  310. Hockey Socks says:

I can’t remember the last time there was this much parity in the Eastern Conference. Save for maybe one or two real longshots, any team could conceivably make the playoffs.

  311. Chuck says:

Ahh… it’s great to see Boone’s crummy Photoshopping skills again! The smell of fall is in the air!

  312. Mike Boone says:

I hesitate to call them “skills”.

  313. petrov14 says:

Photoshop? My guess was MS paint!

  315. Matt_in_TO says:

Before anyone decides to boo Carey they should remember these two simple little words, Alex Auld.

    – In Price We Trust

  316. Rugger says:

Washington & Pittsburgh yes, the other 3 you ceded play-offs spots to are as big a question mark as the Habs.  Yes, Philly went to the finals but they still have no goalie.  Boston couldn’t score last year and look to be without Savard for a very long time and last i checked, Marty’s age is catching up with you and I.

  317. Chorske says:

Jaysus, thanks GAWD hockey is back.

  318. notbigbird says:

Ah … the anticipation. I’m sure all of the usual suspects are sharpening their negative fangs already.

  319. Chuck says:

Ok then, how about “rustic charm”?

  320. Mike Boone says:

Or “game but ultimately futile efforts”

  321. SeriousFan09 says:

This count as Boone’s first veiled crack at the Leafs this season?

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  322. andrewberkshire says:

Since when does Boone veil his cracks at the Leafs? Hard to be subtle with a team that atrocious.

  323. habinypsi says:

Isn’t he on a tryout with the B’s?  if so he has plenty to prove.

  324. crabvader says:

Gaston Therrien says Spacek looks like he’s in much better shape…

He probably means Spacek doesn’t look like he has his infamous gullet.

    All good news, though!

  325. Keith says:

I just hope we don’t stink it up like the laffs did last night. I hate putting up with unintelligent, ignorant laff fans and their tripe.

  326. crabvader says:

At least we aren’t the Leafs, regardless of the outcome tonight.

Besides, pre-season is just a good time to showcase young talent. You really shouldn’t read too much into it.

(In the Laffs case, it’s different because their young “talent” IS their main team. He he he.)

  327. The Big One says:

Couldn’t have said it any better myself.  I almost enjoy a Leafs loss as much as a Habs win.

Palushaj looks like he’ll be fun to watch tonight, he’s got good linemates too. Can’t say the same for Leblanc, will probably have to grind it out all night, its too bad, would have liked to see him with one NHL’er at least.

  410. Chorske says:

At 6’6″ he can probably carry another 30 lbs minimum. He’s got a ways to go.

  411. RiverviewCanadien says:

Not at all, it was just a joke to liven up the room…Price is having a rough start as well I guess

  412. andrewberkshire says:

But the point is I expected him to be less effective this early. Be impressed Chorske, it’s ok to be positive!

  413. Puck Bard says:

  414. andrewberkshire says:

-Wow, #71 Louis? Well, I guess the Breeze really did have some hometown fans.

-The first two minutes look like the Habs have not yet been indoctrinated into the “We are a fast team. We are a fast team. We are…” philosophy.

-Nice rush by Palushaj. Too bad the question he’s destined to answer most often is how to pronounce his name.

-Uh oh. I guess you don’t have to worry about the five-hole when you’re riding a horse.

-Skillsie has his strengths, but shooting the puck isn’t one of them.

-Poor Gorges is like a pop-up punching doll even in the pre-season. Guy gets hammered all the time.

-RDS with the iso-cam on Leblanc. If I were him, I’d check my bathroom for electronics on a regular basis.

-Dumont looked nice on Pleks’ line. I have hope for him.

-Lapierre looks like he’s decided to take up residence in the blue paint. I hope he’s not just renting.

-I don’t know why Spooner’s name makes me want to make dumb jokes.

-Rask looks like he’s getting ready to have another solid year. Thanks a lot, leafs. Morons.

-The second Bs goal has the natives sounding restless. I wonder how long before Price gets tossed into the volcano?

-Third Bs goal, and Martin is thinking of pulling the Franchise to protect him. If Timmins is watching this, I hope he’s considering investing in some solid D fairly soon.

-Plekanec is not conserving anything for the real year. Or, is he?

-Muller on RDS. Preseason is such a waste of a good suit.

Call me a liar for one shot. Point being, the refs aren’t to blame here. The Habs are showing a major case of the nerves.

  589. Puck Bard says:

    Sanford. I know… didn’t need it mate.

  590. crabvader says:

Ummmmmmmmm McQuaid had JUST passed it off. It’s called finishing a check and players do it all the time.

  591. JIMVINNY says:

Still should have been a roughing going to other way.  Mcquaid smashed him into the boards face first.  After the whistle.

  592. Rob says:

    i’ll grant you that one

  593. Chorske says:

Not really seeing that, but I am being distracted by a fussy baby.

  594. J.T. says:

No, we were lucky.  Lots of others got hit really badly, though.

  595. Danno says:

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  596. Matt_in_TO says:

I’m surprised they didn’t give Spacek an assist on the goal

    – In Price We Trust

  597. Exit716 says:

Spacek is a horrible defenseman. As bad a signing as the trade for Ribeiro for that crippled Finn from Dallas.

Spacek looks like a fat tub of goo that should have retired to Lafleur’s beer leaguers three or four years ago.

  598. habs001 says:

now is the time to experiment on the pp point with some forwards…if gorges gets regular pp time we will struggle on the pp

  600. SarahMc33 says:

UGH!!! UGH UGH UGH!!!!! Is there a rodeo up in Montreal this weekend??? Price seems a bit distracted….about 4 goals distracted…..

  601. Exit716 says:

Price was rushed into the league by an arrogant and out of touch GM.

  602. WarHero says:

Hey Matt_in_TO: Kinda like this guy :)

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!

  603. J.T. says:

I think if they’re making people pay for this preseason crap, it should mean something.  Each team should be allowed to pick a preseason game and hold it in reserve.  If, at the end of the season, they have a real game that sucks worse than that preseason one, they should get to drop the real game from the standings and replace it with the preseason result.

  604. andrewberkshire says:

    Or not…

  605. Chorske says:

LOL, how would one ever choose the WORST game?

  606. HardHabits says:

You’re not ambitious enough. Teams should be able to hold pre-season games in hand to be used during the play-offs, like a wild card.

  607. topher5468 says:

Rask=good, Price=Bad, I dont care that its pre season, he looks terrible.

  608. 4loorplay says:

Agree 100%   why does 1 goalie look so good and another bad….

Because 1 is good and the other is ….BAD

  609. geo_habsgo says:

This game won’t matter when it’s over and it won’t matter tomorrow or next week. Take it for what it is a televised scrimmage. Price is playing really rusty but that’s what preseason is for. Getting the timing back. Halak didn’t have a good game in St. Louis and we know what kind of game he is capable of bringing to the ice. Let’s just enjoy what we can from it and cool down?

  610. topher5468 says:

Thats all true, but Carey needed a good perfomance after all that happened during the off season ,and he laid an egg.

  618. HNS says:

Does Price actually participate in the Rodeo or is he one of the clowns?

  619. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

I swear we lost 6-1 to Ottawa last year in pre-season and no one complained. I thought this was the time to evaluate your prospects.

  620. Chorske says:

    Good shift for Tinordi

51 (he whose name cannot be spelled) does not look out of place.  Well, at least PG can rest easy about that one :)

  631. habs4ever2894 says:

This is depressing ………. i know its only the preseason and it doesn’t count for anything but wow…. cmon carey please for the love of god don’t do this to me again. All last season every time carey got the start i was always so confident that he’d have a good game only to be disappointed when he let in the quick weak goals that put the team in a bad spot. The positives so far are Pyatt , Lapierre ,Palushaj and plekanec.

  632. Chorske says:

I think Pouliot and Palushaj are the revelations of the night. I like what I see.

  633. sidhu says:

So did I, but if I remember correctly Topher he was atrocious last preseason, like an 84% save percentage or something like that, and then was lights out to start the regular season.

  637. Chorske says:

Spacek made one big slip, otherwise he’s been ok. Tinordi is wisely keeping his game simple.
