Capital punishment

Good thing Canadiens don’t have to play in London or Paris.

Alexander Ovechkin scores four goals to beat them in Washington.

That one required overtime. In the capital of our great country, the Senators needed five minutes to put this one out of reach. The line of Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson scored six goals and amassed 15 points. Spezza had a career-best three goals and three assists.

Canadiens had not lost a game by five goals since january 2007 – in Ottawa.

Otawa’s defence controlled the Tomas Plekanec line and threw a blanket over the Canadiens’ power play. Canadiens hit five goalposts and showed signs of life after falling behind early, but when Heatley made it 4-0 in the second period, that was pretty much the ballgame.

It might be time to stop thinking about first place … and worrying about the playoffs.

  1. sidhu says:

I’ve met Scott Stevens a few times when he played for Washington – he was a beast on the ice and a pure gentleman off it. Komi is a great hitter, but I knew Scott Stevens, and Komi, you are no Scott Stevens.

  3. MICP says:

I think the Sens will be happy to have their first line back and its going to show. Alfy and Heatly will both be on the score sheet as Sens win 5-1.
We are getting better but still not as good as Ottawa. Just look at their line up. Like us losing to Toronto that is why you play the game. We should have won but they were the better team on Thursday, lets hope were the better team tonight or Huet just steals a game for us.

  4. lemess says:

…and he gave the puck right to Alfredson

  5. Keith says:

    Yeah that’s weird.

Looking forward to this game since tuesday night. Damnit! The Ottawa Janitors play by play guys are calling the game on Hockey Day in Canada. Looks like RDS maybe and CJAD of course lol. GO HABS GO!!!

  24. fun police says:

dandy out a mistake? how do you figure? all the goals he scores? all the fights? his great passes? his “energy”? we have a fourth line already. dandy in, usually means ryder out, i’ll take ryder anyday.

  25. yathehabsrule says:

C’mon CBC, it’s Hockey Day in Canada…put Rick and Murray from CJAD in the booth instead of Galley and that other 3rd stringer.. I’d listen to CJAD online but the feed is out by 30 seconds..getting RDS next year I think!

  26. Yeats says:

Just in case we need a Plan B for this evening, Michigan (#2) is playing Miami of Ohio (#1) at 7:30pm. If you have DirecTV, Channel 636. Michigan knocked them off 4-2 last night in Miami’s barn. Max Pac got the final goal for the Wolverines. I’m looking for a big win in Ottawa tonight, but you can’t blame me for covering all my bases.

  30. lemess says:

    4-1 Ott
Emerys shutout is ruined after catching a glimpse of his own relection in the ice, a Patrice Brisbois slapshot blows by his head.

  31. The Teacher says:

I think they need to trade or waive, in this order,

Lidstrom to Montreal for a 7th round pick, and Ryder.
Datsyuk to Edmonton for Jarret Stoll
Zetterberg to Anaheim for Todd Bertuzzi
Chelios to Toronto for Dominic Moore and a 6th round pick.
Osgood to L.A. for Dan Cloutier.

  32. Odie Cleghorn says:

Not only that, but Breezeby undoubtedly has a games played bonus much like Ryder had a goals scored bonus last year. Let’s watch how that plays out in the media if Breezeby gets to claim the cash, or, pardon me, “achieve that performance goal”. But, “he wants to play in Montreal”. Because, to the best of my knowledge, once your name is pencilled in the lineup card, that counts as a “game played”.

  33. Barts says:

    Two thoughts…

Mistake keeping Dandenault out, and how can Jason Spezza be making $8 mil and Alfredsson only $5.5???

  34. yathehabsrule says:

    Yeah I saw that too..

Love how Komi is always grinning and smiling off ice and in interviews….then unleashes the monster on the ice!

  35. Yeats says:

You think he has the cap space for them?

  36. Odie Cleghorn says:

His photo album contains more, much more, than Carbonneau and dates way back to the Corey/Houle era.

  37. Chuck says:

Interesting… over the last few days the Wings have lost to the Kings and the laffs. Perhaps they’re already in coast mode heading to the playoffs.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  38. The Teacher says:

So, Komi patterned himself after Scott Stevens and Vladimir Konstantinov. Very good choices i might say. And for Fact Rattling sake, they didn’t fight too much either!

  39. Y says:

I’m guessing its time to blow up the Wings!

Anyways, at least that decreases the chance the Laffs will get 1st pick

  40. Yeats says:

Man, that was a tough result to swallow just now. Cliff Fletcher is now going to be a big buyer before the trade deadline!

  41. sag says:

It must be worse to play him this much…Carbo must have won a pig hunt when they were teammates back in the day!

Stinking laughs just potted one in OT

  42. sidhu says:

What could it be? Brisebois could be a) Carbo’s dealer, b) in possession of some racy photos of Carbo (like Tlustly), c) threatening to slash Carbo’s tires and egg his house, or….. ?

  43. Norm0770 says:

You and every other fan! He must be holding something over Carbo’s head.

  44. sidhu says:

Glad that Ryder is getting another chance and that the old top line is reunited. But, I’m troubled that Brisebois remains in the lineup over Dandy. I hope OB gets in game shape soon because I don’t think Brisebois should play another game for us this season.

  45. ebk says:

best stretch of games the Habs have had, these were the lines. Mess around with the 4th line all you want but let these three lines play together for the next 5 games or so. A little patience would be a good thing right now.

  46. tony d says:

I’m glad Dandenault’s sitting tonight…he’s been pretty invisible out there…too soft on the offense
don’t expect much from Ryder (the bull in a China shop) but maybe he can run into someone and get them off the puck… the boys have to bring their A game tonight and not just in the last 2 minutes
glad to see the cristol ball back in nets… even with Carey’s time in Hamilton…didn’t see much improvement
he’s still a little Huet behind the ears
    Go Habs Go

  47. sag says:

Hammerlik isn’t too flashy but he is currently proving why he is one of our mvp’s. I just don’t feel comfortable with him out of the lineup. Three for the genie in the lamp:

    1. break out game for koivu line, including a hat trick for Ryder
    2. huet stands on his head
    3. Solid game by the Breezer

  48. sidhu says:

You are missing the point — it’s not about stripping Koivu of the “C”, it’s about acknowledging that if we consider him to be our biggest leader and a serious offensive producer, we will be sorely disapppointed. We need to disabuse ourselves of the notion that Saku is a real offensive threat and that he can change the course of a game. He is a shell of what he used to be. At $4.75m and with the “C”, fans rightfully expect more from him than what he is capable of delivering. I have a lot of appreciation for his ability to overcome his medical and personal issues, but that does not factor into his actual performance, which I think has been extremely weak as our highest paid forward and our captain. He should do the honorable thing and retire after year’s end.

  49. Sehs says:

I still can’t believe Alfie only makes $5.5 million and that a couple of seasons ago they were criticizing him and his leadership skills so much…

On a side note, does anyone ever notice that Alfie is always interview between periods by the woman at RDS (I forget her name… Chantal?) and he always seems so happy and smiling?

  50. Mike Boone says:

Proximity to Chantal MachabΓ©e puts a smile on anyone’s face.

  51. B says:

Good point about Alfredsson. It’s hard to believe that after all he has done for that team, some fans and media wanted to dump the captain due to a period of struggle. Good thing the team had enough sense to ignore that.

  52. Les-Habitants says:

That was about as painfull as a game I can remember

  53. PattyBoy31 says:

  54. HotHabs says:

this one was over before it started. Ottawa gave the first half of a message on Tuesday night and finished it tonight.

BTW, those who think the Spezza line isn’t so great (without saying it in so many words) need their heads checked. That’s like saying Ovechkin is lucky on most of his goals!

I feel that the next couple of games will decide if we are in our out of the playoffs.

Average goaltending all night. Very soft, poor defense. Lets hope for better in florida.

  57. mbplekfan says:

Good show of team toughness. No answer for Neil at all tonight. No answer for any of the cheapshots.

But hey nobody gives out a good glare like Ryder.

  58. HotHabs says:

just another statement, like the Neil check on Gorges – not necessary with a 6-1 lead, but they are just dishing it out to send a very clear message: they’re just a lot better than Mtl.

  68. J.T. says:

Okay…thank God it’s over. Believe it or not, I actually saw some good in this.

-The Koivu line played very well…but Higgins is completely jinxed. They tried like hell though.
-They didn’t quit after they were down by three before five minutes had passed.
-Ottawa’s top line features a two-time fifty goal scorer and two of the top twenty or so players in the world. These things will happen.
-Kovalev will be really mad for the Florida game.
    -Price wasn’t terrible.
-Everyone learned various lessons…like not to split up Komi and Markov and the team needs a real shut down centre.

  69. nick says:

i know it’s crazy talk. but i’d like to see carbo leave the effin’ lines for more than a period. Could you imagine how well these guys would do if they had 3-4 games on the same line under their belt.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  78. Moey says:

You have to hand it to the Sens, their message was loud and clear, to the Habs AND their fans.

  79. OldGrover says:

Enh. It wasn’t a good game by the Habs, but it wasn’t a horrid game, either. Nothing worked. No bounces. Everything the Sens did worked, nothing the Habs did went in. Lots of posts, lots of chances, just nothing worked.

  80. Yeats says:

Miami just tied it at 5. 5:03 to go. Damn, this is entertaining hockey! Plan B is working out like a charm!!!

  81. NLhabsfan says:

I thought Ryder played good tonight coming a few days off.GIVE me a break…Everyone on Montreal stunk the place out tonight. This anti Ryder wears thin….Join the educated.

  82. wild flower says:

agreed – It wasn’t as bad as the score would indicate but they got a reality check and hopefully the coach realizes that, unless a trade provides a better alternative, Higgins – Koivu – Ryder should stay togethor. A game like this does make another large top six forward seem critical. Price looked good to me.

  83. Chuck says:

Ottawa continues to assert that the are merely a one-trick pony… but what a pony it it! Their number one line accounted for all six goals. Time for Carbo to come up with another game plan to stop them. Perhaps putting a puck control line (Pleks/Kovi/Kosty) out against them is the answer.

The game in a nutshell: we beat their goalie six times, and they beat our goalie(s) six times. Unfortunately, only one of ours went in. Sometimes, that’s the way the puck bounces.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  84. the_vipah says:

Did the whole league laugh at Colorado as well?

Breezer had as much to do with this loss as everyone else on this team. They all sucked.

  85. J.T. says:

Well, if it does anything, it underlines that Hammer is worth his money. I think with Hammer and O’Byrne, this is a different game. But yeah…Breezer’s got to go. I was one of the loudest advocates of Dandenault never, ever playing D for the Habs again in training camp. Now, I’d rather see him out there than Breezer. Uggh. But whomever asked who’ll be Carbonneau’s whipping boy tomorrow…I guarantee it won’t be #71. I’m guessing Higgins.

  86. HotHabs says:

Ottawa will finish 1st or 2nd in the conference.

Montreal will hopefully finish between 6th & 8th

But, if you don’t think Sens are a lot better than Habs, that’s your right.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  88. Moey says:

You’re bang on, let’s blame this on breezer, price, huet, kovi, pleks, whoever. We’re not as good as Ottawa, period. We’ll maybe go a round or two in the playoffs, it’s still an improvment. Cheese and rice, I’m so sick of these people.

  89. showey47 says:

breezer is more like the snuffolupagaus, carbo is the big bird. only carbo thinks he exists

  90. the_vipah says:

Here, I have an idea. Hit them.

They feast on us because we are so soft and other then Komi they have no worries about dangling around the ice. Add another couple of hard hitters and they won’t even want to touch the puck.

  91. HotHabs says:

How quickly we forget… Ottawa had a very tough run to get to the finals. They had very little left in the tank, not forgetting that Anaheim didn’t play as many games and was a very strong opponent.

  92. J.T. says:

Yeah, Chuck…their pony is called Northern Dancer.

And Ottawa having last change to put their racehorses out against our third line foals and fourth line geldings didn’t help.

  93. Bill says:

Habs need a real number one centre more.

  94. NLhabsfan says:

Time for Carbo to stop tinkering….In all my years watching hockey I have never seen any teams lines played with so much.Never.Someone explain the purpose.

  95. wild flower says:

agreed – I think the rest of the team feels this to. He is playing scared and just hanging on for dear life. Streit was poor too but I don’t mind because with his skill-set maybe that will make signing him more likely. He plays soft but smart. Brisbois just plays like … time for the senior league.

  96. Yeats says:

Question 2: You are right, it was a group suck. Moreover, you couldn’t pin this one on the officials, could you?

  100. Bill says:

Jesus. I stopped reading after your first “level-headed” point. You want to fire the coach who has this team way, way ahead of where everyone thought they’d be at this point in the year. That’s ingenious.

  101. HotHabs says:

Hopefully once Breezer meets his minimum games played quota (contract terms), things will change and he’ll be eating Bell Centre hotdogs upstairs

  102. Yeats says:

You are spot on on this one, you hit the Sens and they pee in their pants. We saw that in last year’s finals. Unfortunately, we don’t have anyone on the current squad, with maybe the exception of Komisarek, who strikes fear into our opponents.

  103. NLhabsfan says:

When you bench players you mess with their character and their confidence. It shows.

  104. mjames says:

I am not ready to toss the keys into the river. Our checking on the Speeza line was weak but at the same time we hit a lot of posts and did not get any bounces. Sens on the other hand max’d out all their chances. I give them full marks for the win but I am not ready to dump on the Habs. I assume there will be enough fans wanting to trade the team etc.

All I want is for Carbo to leave those first three lines alone. Koivu’s line showed life early in the game and actually had a 0 +/-. I feel sorry for Brisebois at -4 since I am sure the lynch mob will be out for him.

One last thing – SK74 needs a few boxing lessons. This is not his game but he will get better at it.

  105. HotHabs says:

Ottawa prep. notes for the game: shut down the Pleks line and we have no worries. It worked

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  106. Chuck says:

Then keep throwing the Kovy line out there. Either they’ll be forced to go with their number one line against ours, or they’ll counter with their checking line, which keeps Alfreddson/Heatley/Spezza on the bench. Not having the last change doesn’t mean that you can’t force their hand. You just have to have the balls to do it.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  107. the_vipah says:

That video doesn’t tell me anything. Patrick Roy stood up and thought he had the puck in his glove. He didn’t. It went in the net and he looked like a fool. Your point?

Breezer was a decent point producer in Colorado AND his +/- was ok.

As for the refs, they had no chance to get involved tonight.

  108. P St. Pierre says:

I was going to offer some comments on the game, but I’m just too frustrated right now. I liked the way Maxim Lapierre and Sergei Kostitsyn played. That’s about all the positives I can draw from this one.

  109. Chuck says:

Maybe Komisarek should get the odd shift on the wing to hammer a few bodies up front.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  110. Moey says:

You’re right, Ian Cobb already said the secret to Spezza is to just hit him, he’s fragile and it throws him off. Habs have to watch videos of Anaheim & Ottawa in last years’ finals.

  111. J.T. says:

Okay…if Hammer is still sick and O’Byrne isn’t ready to make the trip to Florida, I think it’s time for Valentenko to get a game. He’s raw and green, but he’s willing to hit people hard, he’s mean and he’s enthusiastic. Whatever he brings, it’s GOT to be better than what we’ve seen on D in the last two games.

  112. I am Canadien says:

    1. Carbs will not be fired. He is still learning. Slowly obviously.
    2. Yes, we are a one line team. Koivu, Ryder, and a couple of pickem’s have got to go.
    3. Hammer is missed
    4. see #2
    5. Agreed. Need a goon. Who? I don’t think we trade for one though.
    6. Huet did steal a couple last month. Price will in the Future.
    7. Brisbrois blew it vs T.O and tonite as well. Lose him quickly.
    8. Kovolev, Kotstitsyn’s, Plek’s, Markov, Price, Hamrlik. The rest are negiotiable.

  113. HotHabs says:

Love your optimism (seriously). And, I’ll add that Price played a decent game. Remember, 2 of the 3 scored on him were batted out of the air and one of those was a highlight reel goal by Heatley.

guys this is either the start of us folding…or a wake up call. hopefully the latter

riding a high after getting within 1 point of first place…losing against the laffs…then getting embarrassed by the first place team…it’s time that carbo gives the team a good pep rally. Tell them that if they even want to think about first place, they have to prove they can win on nights that they should win and on nights that they shouldn’t win. It’s a time where he won’t point fingers but he will insinuate that his stars step up the execution. If you miss the first time, make it count the second time (dany heatley’s pp goal in the second for example. Never give up on any play. This is where carbo has to tell the team that it has to forget about everything that has happened in the first 2/3rds of the season, it doesn’t mean anything. The real season starts here, as it has year after year. Every player should be given a clean slate to show that they are committed to the team and committed to winning. Goaltending rotation is not necessary. Huet should start most of the matches bar any blowouts. We have nothing to lose, we’ve outplayed the expectations, we finish 14th, doesn’t matter cause that’s where we’re supposed to finish. if we finish 8th, we’ve exceeded expectations…we have to play like there is nothing to lose night in, night out. If it means suffocating defense, then so bet it. if it means all out attack and aggressiveness, so be it. None of this bush league half and half. Our style for our success is our quick transition and good decision making on the forecheck. Our demise is our attempt to shut down games after going up 3 or 4. Did Ottawa shut-down tonight? no…they kept going, and they grinded out the victory.

I’m not saying we played bad tonight, we forechecked well and created chances, the execution was lacking, and the defensive game was unbearably disappointing. We respected their number 1 line too much which shouldn’t happen…they closed down plekanec as if he had a razor at an airport…we let alfie get in a shooting position to beat Price.

Even when the team was down by 3 they continued to work hard…but as a precaution, carbo has to make sure his team gets the idea of what’s to come in the last stretch of the season.

Every game (except last Tuesday) is the same against Ottawa. They score the number of goals that Montreal makes mistakes. Earlier is the year the Habs dominate for 55 minutes but score only once then 2 mistakes in the final 5 minutes equals a loss. Ottawa is incredibly adept at cashing in on their opportunities.

As far as Breezer being -4, don’t forget that he took 2 bad penalties that led to PP goals for Ottawa.

  126. doug says:

my thoughts exactly, bill. and i’ve not liked carbonneau much in the past. . . but i’d only want him gone if we tanked like last year. this is his potential weakness: changing lines too much, panicking too much, not being a leader in the right way. my impression is that is better this year; isn’t this the first two game regular time loss streak we’ve had ALL year? i think so. . . the test is coming in terms of what happens next, not what’s happened already.

we are a borderline and growing team. stop the panicking. we’ll be okay but we’re not in the top four in the conference. the florida trip is big.

  130. likehoy says:

down 3-0, koivu and ryder turned it up. Plekanec unable to fight off his check, and kovalev completely miscued. Facing the adversity of a mentally tough game, I’m sorry but I rather have Koivu and Ryder playing than Plekanec and Kovalev. The type of game koivu and ryder play are well suited for teams that have to claw for every inch because of their more directness in attack. Like Boone has previously mentioned, the Plekanec line is beautiful to watch when we’re winning…but frustrating when we’re losing.

This is Koivu’s turn around game. He worked the hardest tonight and showed flashes of the Koivu we all know and love. Koivu is as gritty as a 5’10 185 lbs player can be…and gets grittier as the season goes on. He’s not known as a playoff performer for being a pansy. He knows how to rise to the challenge. He gets a fire lit under him when HIS team is under pressure. He’s been progressively getting better each game, and if not for higgins, Koivu would be a standout.

Mark my words…Koivu will be an important figure in our race for the playoffs.

  131. Moey says:

He’s probably poop himself and that would buy us a timeout. But lets face it, I doubt the Habs are watching videos at this point, they’re still having teething problems figuring out line pairings.

It’s tough at this stage to tell if he’s a first line guy, but he could certainly be a top two. I want to see how his first year at Michigan unfolds, especially if they make a run for the NCAA chanpionship. That will be this year’s litmus test.

  140. Norm0770 says:

I’d expect him in Hamilton next season and we’ll see where he goes from there. If he keeps progressing, I could see him turn into a power forward, maybe second line.

  143. Wencz says:

Shouldn’t lose our heads over this one. I know any loss is always the end of the world when you cheer for Les Glorieux, but its just one (bad) game. Getting Hammer back will add some stability and toughness to the D and hopefully Ryder will be able to build on this performance. And although I didn’t really like the way we responded when we got down, if a few bounces had gone the other way that would’ve been a different game.

  144. nightmare_49 says:

Yeates – How is he handling the puck , any skill.

  145. HotHabs says:

-I’m not a Carbo fan as a coach, but he won’t be fired this season (if not for a long time). Replacing the coach at this point of the year is useless for a team that is already exceeding expectations and whose main goal is to make the playoffs, not win the cup. Personally, I think they’ll make it to the post season

-We are a one line team. Some would contend that the Sens are too. Difference: their line is world class and chock-full of pure veteran talent

-Lats game has picked up since the new year and he’s young. My big issue with him is he’s slow and often lazy.

-Kostopoulos has had a decent season – he’s not useless.

-Begin hasn’t shown the fire and intensity he used to have.

-Smolinski … what can I say? I don’t usually notice him, like he’s not even on the team. That should say something…

-Habs could definitely use more toughness, but with a player who can both fight with the heavyweights and be of use with the puck. Not sure who.

-Huet is not useless. He’s actually played well and his numbers show it. However, he’ll probably never be a game-stealer. And, from what we’ve seen with Price, not sure if he’ll ever be one either.

-Breezer… aaaahhhhh… nah nah nah nah – heeeey – goodbye

-I think the Pleks line is untouchable. Komi, Markov, Hammer are untouchable.

Sometimes that’s the way the puck bounces (literally). They even batted two out of the air for goals, one of them bouncing off the ice and over Price’s glove before it went in.

We beat their goalie six times, and they beat our goalie(s) six times. Unfortunately, we hit five posts… and they didn’t.

He plays for Dartmouth in the ECAC. I have yet to see any of their games this year. I generally watch Hockey East, WCHA and CCHA games when I get the chance.

  179. Norm0770 says:

It is not just following the herd, it is watching the game. He was out of position when Tucker scored the other night and he took two bad penalties tonight because he is falling behind the play. His reputation is as an offensive d-man but has less points and a worse +/- rating than Komisarek even though Komisarek draws the assignment of the other teams top line and gets no PP time. So Brisebois is not contributing much at either end of the ice. Carbo also messed up tonight by splitting up Markov and Komisarek, not sure what that was about.

I have nothing against Brisebois as a person. His time in the NHL has passed, and he should definately not be playing more minutes than Komisarek. The coach has continued to use him beyond his capability at the expense of the team.

As far as sending the wrong message by calling up Valentenko, you may be right, but he should get a few games in before the playoffs incase they need to call him up then.

  180. likehoy says:

Rafa Benitez is EXACTLY like Carbo. He refuses to use the same starting XI every game. He always has to rotate his players and even his skipper gerrard doesn’t play every game (the majority of them yes, but sometimes he only comes in as a substitute).

The question is not the “balls” of other players, it is about whether Koivu himself deserves to remain as our captain in light of his lackluster play and his inability to center a line that is anywhere close to being as dangerous as the Pleks line. He is a has-been, plain and simple. A captain should be a leader, should be a person you can call on when the going gets rough. Koviu, however, gets knocked off the puck so easily and takes offensive penalties like his life depends on it. He is a remnant of a captain, of a dominating forward.

To me, the troubling question is not whether he should be traded or deprived of his captaincy, but why Koivu still has the audacity to wear the “C” knowing that he sucks for all intents and purposes. He should do the honorable thing and give the “C” to a more deserving and respected player, such as Kovalev. Alex and the crowd have a dynamic relationship — the only relationship the remains between Saku and the Montreal crowd is when Saku takes a fall and the crowd gets upset.

He longer holds my respect as “C”, though I will always have respect for what he has done as a person, overcoming his disease.

Anyone who disagrees – tell me the last time Saku dominated a game, the same way that Iginla, Vinny, or Alfie does. He is weak.

  200. Chuck says:

Not a message about any particular player, but the state of the team as a whole. Just as giving Price all of the starts over Huet could be interpreted as the organization looking ahead to next year instead of the playoffs, calling up Bulldogs to take over for healthy bodies, regardless of how they’re playing, might be seen by the other veterans who are playing well as throwing in the towel on the season. It’s definitely a fine balance.

I’d still love to see a D core that includes Hamrlik, Markov, Komisarek, Streit, Valentenko and O’Byrne for a few games this season. Hopefully we won’t be out of a playoff race by the time that happens!

  201. MathMan says:

    Can we please not overreact…

Ottawa simply has Montreal’s number. It’s worrying, especially since they are in the division. They simply aren’t this good, and Montreal isn’t this bad… not even close. The only real problem is that pundits will use this as a barometer game and give it much more importance than it truly deserves.

Are the Capitals so great because they embarassed mighty Ottawa four times out of four? Clearly, they must be vastly superior to Ottawa.

Montreal laid an egg + Ottawa got all the bounces = lopsided score. End of story.

Yes, they haven’t played well lately. They lost three of four. It’s a slump. They need to come back hard against the Florida team.

And ultimately, it’s only two points. We may even see Montreal in first place at some point before the year is done.

A lot of it does depend on how they bounce back. But until their season-high regulation losing streak exceeds, oh, two games — maybe we should rein in the panicked reactions.

That’s what I was thinking. We don’t have another 2nd line forward.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but after Saku’s 39 points (and he’s having a terrible year apparently) and Chris Higgins with 34 (another terrible year apparently)) our next highest scoring forward is Guillaume Latendresse (who is apparently too slow, doesn’t hit or fight and should be sent to the AHL or used as trade bait) with 20 points. RYDER is next with 18 and we have Smolinski with 17. Not exactly scary or awe inspiring are they?

But we do have Sergei Kostitsyn with 15 points in 26 games (0.57 PPG)

    Saku’s is 0.71 btw.

This is just his on-ice stats we’re talking about here.

Taking the C off of him would accomplish absolutely nothing, for him OR the team.

  215. Habs-Kat says:

Its been shown time and time again that goaltending prospects can’t be rushed. A baptism by fire approach doesn’t work 99% of the time. Its foolish to label Price a bust because of a shaky rookie campaign. He’s a rookie making rookie mistakes. He’s not a Crosby-level prospect that will immediately make a difference and rise to superstardom immediately. Its especially hard for a goalie to do that. Any decision to call Price a flop this season will be a very, very premature one and I’ll be outraged.

  216. Chuck says:

I think that Price has been far from a bust, especially considering the pressure that was put on him by making the team straight out of training camp. I think that he’s played quite well while having to adapt to the NHL game. A few chinks in the armour? Sure, but that was to be expected considering that beforethis year his entire professional career consisted of last years’ Calder Cup playoff run in Hamilton. He also played quite well over the stretch where Huet was hurt, and looked good coming off the bench tonight.

If anything, he’s been a victim of overblown expectations.

Am I pi**ed? Yes! Am I optimistic? yes? In Bob we trust, and all in all it’s been a wonderful season with only a few regrets, 27 to go!

  218. The Teacher says:

    LMAO, Guy Tinkereau!

  219. Chuck says:

Komisarek with only six shifts and 4 minutes of ice time in the third period. I hope he’s not injured.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  220. Chris says:

I’ve certainly not come across a single website mentioning Price as a bust, but I’m sure they exist. Price was a solid prospect when he was drafted, had a bit of an off-year the following season (causing him to lose the goalie battle on Canada’s WJC team to Justin Pogge), and then had that phenomenal season last year. He’s still VERY young so can we please avoid tossing the word bust around until we actually know what we have? Its not like the kid needs MORE pressure!

  221. Chris says:

I disagree. You are comparing the impact of a playmaking centre at the tail-end of his prime to 3 of the top 5 players in the world right now just entering their prime. His game is not such that he will EVER dominate a game…its just not the way he plays. If you are looking for that, then maybe you need to change your expectations.

If you don’t see the pointlessness of that exercise, then I doubt any arguments I could make would sway your opinion so why waste the breath. And you know what is ironic? People like you were trashing Alfie in Ottawa before the playoffs last season for all the same crap that you are foisting on Koivu this season. Vinny had his captaincy stripped because he was NOT a leader.

If you don’t like Koivu as captain, that’s your choice. If you want to spout off about how great Kovalev’s relationship with the crowd is, at least don’t expect me to forget how people like you were trying to run HIM out of town this time last year. End of the day, I sincerely doubt that they are going to call a group of Habs fans anytime soon to ask their opinions of whether Koivu deserves the captaincy. And THAT is something that I am sincerely thankful for, given how disgustingly fickle many fans are.

  222. howtathor says:

I have a feeling that Price will get better as the games get bigger, especially in the playoffs. Just looking at his track record. He is a “money” goaltender. What do you need? WJC…no problem, Calder Cup …no problem. As for Chips, he is always in good position, you always notice that he is there whereas Smokes is rather invisible just kind of floats around for a minute or so. Chips was sent down partly due to the numbers and partly to work on his faceoffs. That being said, I hope that Breezer and Smokes are either bought out, traded or sent to the pressbox indefinitely.

    Mark my words,

    its not because of him.

  225. nightmare_49 says:

    Your sharp , Chuck.

  226. ebk says:

I want to apologize for some of my posts last night. I got involved in a pathetic cyber squabble and it should not have happened. Those types of posts are ruining what is a very good forum for Hab fans. Looks like the Web Administer scrubbed a bunch of comments and that is a good thing. It’s pretty pathetic how mouthy and tough we get sitting safely behind our keyboard. It won’t happen again.

Sorry to Mr. Boone and to all that come to this site. We all deserve better.

  227. Yeats says:

I for one thought the whole thing was very entertaining after a miserable effort by the Habs. And, no one has anything to apologize for. The downside this morning, however, is that even at pickup I couldn’t get the lyrics to the Mr. Ed theme song out of my head.

You had to see the expression on one of the opposing defenseman’s face as I came down the left wing muttering:

    Go right to the source
    And ask the horse
He’ll give you the answer that you’ll endorse
He’s always on a steady course
    Talk to Mister Ed!

  228. ebk says:

that would have been a sight.

They scrubbed it clean anyway. Some of your best material is gone forever.

poor Boone would have cracked 900 posts if not for the janitorial clean up.

  229. Yeats says:

Considering that you were third man in during my go-to with another poster last night, your apology this morning rings very hollow in my opinion. There is just something so wrong with blind-siding someone who is otherwise engaged and then saying you’re sorry.

  230. ebk says:

well you can take it for what it’s worth.

  231. Yeats says:

    Not much, in my opinion.

  232. ebk says:

You have my email address, if you have something to say, that is the place to say it.

    Have a good day, Brian

  233. The Teacher says:

I for one, am very confused.

Why were last night’s comments deleted and so many others allowed to remain. doesn’t make sense to me.

  234. The Teacher says:

NHL Captains that are not scoring machines

    Bobby Holik
    Ethan Moreau
    Adam Foote
    Jamie Langenbrunner
    Jason Smith
    Tim Taylor (IR)
    Chris Clark

I would think Koivu satisifes more requirements than any of these guys.

    Captainship isn’t about scoring points.

I understand your points Sidhu, but yes, I agree, everyone expects way too much from Koivu.

He is not the dynamic offencive threat that he once was (and he was never as good as some people think).

That is fine with me BTW, we all know he can’t bring us a Cup himself. The management has never given him the proper players to play with. Is that Saku’s fault? Nope!

  235. Yeats says:

I have no idea. I didn’t see anything offensive in my trade ideas concerning 20th Century American comedians, for example. I think in the new environment on HIO all you need to do is flag something as offensive and it goes. I think you might as well just go all they way. Ban all criticism of the Habs. There were many positives to be taken away from last night’s game. I can’t list any of them, but I’m sure they were there. I have one: the game started on time. Kudos to the NHL!

  236. ebk says:

you still got the Mr. Ed song running through your head there yeats.

so give me your rundown on Pacioretty. With all the hoopla going on, I missed it.

  237. Yeats says:

Just jock full of: Wow!!! Great goal!!! Plekkkkks!!! All those things that make it such a special experience. We must all repent and embrace the new code of conduct. The Habs were great last night. Ottawa just happened to be greater. All Hail Carbo!

  238. The Teacher says:

Boone’s game blog is a different matter IMO, but to each their own.

The fact that you gave up on your so-called team after 5 minutes last night said a lot. Just an observation is all.

I did appreciate your following of Pax, at least you kept the posts relevant to the Habs.

  239. sidhu says:

I don’t see why Koivu should be spared criticism because he is at the “tail-end of his prime.” In fact, saying that he is at the tail-end of his career tacitly acknowledges that he is not what he used to be. So then the question is why we should confer upon him the same leadership demands and praise that he earned when he was in his prime.

Moreover, you are arguing that Saku is on his last legs when he is only 32. Other older players, such as Kovalev (34) Brind’Amour (36), are still playing well at their ages and have resurrected their careers. I see no indication that Saku is capable of doing the same. Irrespective of his age, we should judge Koivu by his performance, which has been underwhelming.

Also, you lump me together with other people who have criticized Alfredson and Kovalev, but I have not made such comments regarding these players.

  240. Yeats says:

There is just too much really good hockey to watch on a Saturday night on the dish down here in the States to waste your time with a crappy game. I gave up on the team? Come on, did they bring it last night? It wasn’t Hockey Day in the U.S. For all I know, it could have been NASCAR Saturday. The leafs were like watching a Chia Pet grow, but they beat the best team in the League on national TV. And, what sort of game did the Habs submit for our approval, as Rod Serling would have said? There wasn’t much I could do from the confines of my home to change their fortunes last night. Sure, I could have knelt in the snow at the steps of the local Catholic Church and begged, but come on, it’s Saturday night. I find the whole questioning peoples allegence to the team a bit boring. I’m a bigger Habs fan than you. Well my condolences, your Saturday night probably sucked a lot more than mine. The Michigan/Miami game was much better entertainment. I’d rather watch a college kid bust his behind with some hope of success than watch a bunch of pros who have potted the game after the first period. BTW, this kid can play. He is one the top line at Michigan as a legitimate 19-yr old freshman and his line got four of the five goals.

  241. The Teacher says:

I understand your point and am not questioning your allegiance for sure, but it does seem a bit fickle. I hope you understand where I’m coming from.

  242. Yeats says:

No, I work all week and am not going to waste my time on a Saturday night watching a half-assed effort by the Habs when there are so many better hockey alternatives available. I’m an economist and by God I am going to maximize my utility. Watching the remainder of last night’s game would have just been soooooo sub-optimal.

  243. The Teacher says:

Maximizing your utility! Can’t argue with that one!

  244. Chris says:

I’m not saying that Koivu should be spared criticism…criticize away. But be fair about your criticism. Don’t compare Koivu to players that play a COMPLETELY different style of play…he is not and never has been a player that is going to put the team on his back and carry them to victory for the very simple reason that he has never been a goal scorer. My biggest objection to your original post stems from the way that you, and many others, seem to equate on-ice scoring performance as “leadership”. Players do get old, and their performance tails off. But that does not make their leadership skills any less…often, it is quite the opposite. Older players have experience dealing with the highs and lows of a season and dealing with the media pressure (particularly in a market like Montreal). They demonstrate their leadership when they take younger players under their wing and mentor them. Or when they are the face in the dressing room that is there, regardless of the result, to face the music in the media scrums. Kovalev is doing it this year, to his credit, and has been a great mentor to the Kostitsyns. Koivu has been doing it for his entire career. I’d be thoroughly shocked if they stripped Koivu of his captaincy and handed it over to Kovalev based on one sub-standard season.

As for being on his last legs, I actually don’t believe that at all. I believe he has suffered from the crazy line juggling, and that he is having an off-year. Much like Kovalev this season, I see no reason why Koivu can’t bounce back…in fact, I deem it far more likely, because unlike Kovalev, Saku has never mailed in a complete season. He is struggling, but not for a lack of effort.

You often have a lot of good points, but when you spam the same point over and over within a single thread, people tend to lose patience. There have been countless times I have typed in a full post and subsequently decided not to submit it because I feel like it is flogging a dead horse…you should try it when it comes to Koivu. Explain what your issue is, and leave it at that…but spare us from 3 or 4 one-line posts repeating the same thing.

  245. sag says:

Everyone on here has been asking for these lines (hopefully given the remainder to gel for the playoffs). Hope they all play well. I don’t understand Dandy out and Breezer in, but oh well. IMHO Lats should sit down and watch some Tim Kerr videos. He scored 50 and couldn’t skate better than an atom major all star either. Just gotta stand by the net.
Boone didn’t mention Hammerlik…Is he still quarantined?

  246. nightmare_49 says:

I’m certainly not happy to see Higgy and Saku back together but i’m glad Ryder is back with Koivu and you make a good point about Lats , he gets to the goal crease eventually and then starts to glide backwards and if he does receive a fed all his weight is on his backside so he gets nothing on the shot or fans. Kerr stood in front like a tripod.

  247. Mike says:

haha yeah i do notice that πŸ˜‰ maybe he gets a quickie? lol JK. anyways. I understand the principle behind this lineup however I believe that we would have greatly benefited from having higgins on the third line and sergei playing his natural position of left wing on the top line. whatever, ive stated my opnions about that to often. I was hoping (dreaming more) that dandy would have gone to defense, and paired with boullion and Brisebois would have sat. oh well. lets hope for not 2 many mistakes by him πŸ˜‰

  248. moser17 says:

I’m looking forward to watching Ryder tonight, in fact. Putting him with Koivu and Higgins might ignite all three of them. And if the Kid Line can dipsy-doodle a bit here and there we might have our “three scoring lines” back!

Good idea to leave Streit back on blue tonight. As good as he is up front, we need some sharp D-men tonight to frustrate Alfalfa, Meekly and the Spaz.

  249. sanj91 says:

lmao…alfalfa, meekly and spaz….doesn’t sound that funny but its actually hilarious…and i dnt even kno y….

  250. Dan23 says:

    Go Ryder Go!

  251. Sbah Reverof says:

We have been saying bring back Ryder, Higgy and Koivu for a few days now. We have suggested that the Kiddie Line be reunited. Lo and behold, it has come to pass. So Carbo, now that I know you’re there, just want to say, stay the course, you’re doing a bang-up job with a great little team. I like your ties, too.

  252. ZepFan2 says:

Makes you wonder if he does come here every now and then eh.

  253. Shawn S says:

Please let the Koivu line come to life this game. If they could play even close to the level they were at last season, this team deserves to be at the top.

  254. Shawn S says:

Please let the Koivu line come to life this game. If they could play even close to the level they were at last season, this team deserves to be at the top.

  255. Les-Habitants says:

Happy to see the lineup that we’re putting out tonight, especially with re-uniting the Kid line and last year’s Koivu line. These are our best forward line combinations, I think…now we just gotta wait for Hammer to get healthy.

Here’s looking at Smokes playing a strong defensive game, between him and the Kovy line, they’ll be seeing a lot of Alfie I think.

Big, big game…pretty pumped about this one!

If I could have one wish for the rest of the season:
Koivu line re-discovers its chemistry. If that happens… πŸ˜€

  256. Habs-Kat says:

She’s gorgeous. I don’t know why TSN still doesn’t have a female field reporter/interviewer. Farhan Lalji isn’t particularly eye-catching for the majority male audience. Get with the program TSN πŸ˜‰

  257. sidhu says:

She’s fine. Wait until the very end of this clip:

  258. Y says:

Maybe they should hire you πŸ˜›

  259. The Teacher says:

Well, when you have a last name of MacHABee, you can’t go wrong covering the Canadiens!

Good CBC camera work. Every Hab they showed during the singing of O’ Canada was either American or Swiss!

And once again we get the anti-Hab broadcaster.

  263. the_larry says:

    …and we’re off to a good start

  264. Ali says:

you’ve got to be kidding me.

  265. The Teacher says:

YAY Huet! Another shot from the blue line. Even if it WAS deflected

  266. HotHabs says:

OK, I’m officially calling this one a blowout!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  267. sidhu says:

That goal was the direct result of Brisebois taking the ceremonial face-off.

  268. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, started the game off with a breeze-bye !

  269. MikeMcLaren says:

If the Canadiens can disconnect their XBox right now I don’t think it will count as a loss because it was in the first 30 seconds…

  270. The Teacher says:

Hahaha definitely will make the next list of great posts!!

  271. the_vipah says:

Sigh, garbage goal, to a garbage team. Losing to a team thats gonna go out of the playoffs in round 1 or 2 is annoying.

I guess thats not a good sign for us.

  272. Les-Habitants says:

Don’t know why they’d split up Komi and Markov…I guess trynig to balance out the other d-pairings, but I’d rather have them together to faceoff against the Heatley line

  273. nightmare_49 says:

Carbo will be changing his lines a little earlier tonite. (19:00) 1st.

  274. the_larry says:

  277. the_vipah says:

Garbage goal #2 and thats the game.

  278. HotHabs says:

Sens look like they’re playing with a little swagger tonight. They want this one bad. Hope the Habs respond with the same intensity…. crap!!!! another goal…. yes officially this one is over

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  279. sidhu says:

    Time out Carbo.

    Carey, get ready.

  280. Ali says:

this is where Carbonneau baffles me. Call a timeout, settle everyone down, and change the damn goalie!

  281. Yeats says:

No time out after that one? Is Carbo in command of his faculties???

  282. sidhu says:

You could have put JFJ in a Habs jersey to take the ceremonial face-off, and that still would have been better than having Brisebois as our team representative.

  283. The Teacher says:

    POOR Ian, naila, et al.

  284. Les-Habitants says:

I thought we were suppose to have the upper-hand in goaltending…that said, we haven’t registered a shot yet.

  285. Matt_in_TO says:

So much for Huet stealing a game for us.
Nice to see him helping the hurting Sens.

  290. The Teacher says:

OMG, can we PLEASE pull our freaking goalie?

  291. Ali says:

  292. the_larry says:

I was thinking the same thing… 7-0 after 2 periods…3-0 already here…might be worse tonight

  293. the_vipah says:

First decent goal and thats really the game.

  294. Matt_in_TO says:

    Cue Mr. Price

  295. Habs-Kat says:

    Oh boy…

  296. NLhabsfan says:

    Change the goalie!!

  297. HotHabs says:

In comes Price – this may be more than embarrassing, worse than the loss to the Laffs the other night, it could turn into an 8-0 drubbing…

  299. Keith says:

Well this game seems over :-(

  300. PGHABS says:

game over, thanks for showing up Huet, or anybody. i have alfie in my pool at least, good night

  301. Yeats says:

Begin’s center ice stick tweak was priceless. I guess the clock struck 12 for Huet?

  302. Ali says:

WTF is Komisarek doing with Bouillon?

  303. The Teacher says:

Somebody needs to have a fight so we can win something in the first period.

  304. sadave says:

It’s bad enough listening to this mess. I am glad I am not watching.

They better get their a**es in gear real soon. We can hope . . .

  305. The Teacher says:

Timo! You said you would be back AFTER the game to vent lol.

  306. Yeats says:

For U.S. DirecTV viewers: Michigan/Miami in seven minutes!

  307. MikeMcLaren says:

This only proves that Ottawa’s just a one-line team!

  308. sidhu says:

Hey Boone, do we get a prize for watching the rest of the game and posting comments ’till the end? My asking price – a date with Sandrine Balthazard.

  309. MICP says:

Since were oh so good at blowing 3-0 leads I am sure Ottawa will do it tonight.
How many times will Daniel F. take an o-zone penalty?
    My guess……..0.

  310. I am Canadien says:

Okay…U heard it hear first…..The flu is now in play in the Habs dressing room. Thanks Roman Hamrlik

  311. frank81 says:

At the rate Ottawa is going, they’d have to blow a 6-nothing lead.

  312. sidhu says:

Situations like this demonstrate who our character guys are and who our leaders are – so far, Komi has stepped up

  313. The Teacher says:

  314. RGM says:

Well, this isn’t a lot of fun, is it? The upside–or is it? There’s still 54 minutes left of hockey to play. Hey, if they can score 3 against us in a period, or in 5 minutes, we can do it to them, eh?

It’s not like Ottawa isn’t giving us chances already.

  315. Matt_in_TO says:

    Higgy can’t buy a goal

  316. MikeMcLaren says:

  317. Moey says:

Now it’s Price’s turn to get pelted with rubber, maybe they’ll alternate between Huet & Price every 5 minutes till this disaster is over.

Higgins couldn’t get lucky in a red light zone with his pants down and a roll of fifties.

  322. The Teacher says:

now Higgins just waved his arms like, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO!

  323. sidhu says:

Emery looks like he’s battling the puck too, we just need to keep plugging away.

  324. whitecat says:

ok …that is the worst start I’ve recently seen. But on the other hand lets not give up hope at the friggin’ 7 minutes in point. Lots of time left to turn the tide people!

  325. Les-Habitants says:

Man, Koivu line showed up to play

Too bad our defensive game was nowhere to be found

  326. MICP says:

I knew we could not lose simply because we are not that good. We now have an excuse, if its not true then we can start the offical conspiracy again.

  327. Y says:

    So…where’s Hossa?

  328. MikeMcLaren says:

We’ve got the Sens RIGHT where we want them!

  329. the_vipah says:

That needs to be a penalty on Emery.

  330. likehoy says:

actually he used to do it pretty often straight out of the lockout…but he’s toned it down when everyone wanted him traded.

Loving the Koivu line, and Ryder is doing exactly what he is suppose to be (and should have been doing all season) shooting the puck

If we have the Koivu line of last year, and the Kovy line of this year…we may just have a chance to come back

  365. The Teacher says:

Wow this ref sucks, did u see him make the call even tho he didn’t see anything and after 3 seconds had passed. Pathetic even if it was the right call.

  366. MICP says:

Can somebody get him some viagra, cialis, levitra or enzyte(sp)?
    Come on.. get it up!

  367. Y says:

Umm ok, are you watching the same game here? First and third goal he had no chance on whatsoever. Please spread the blame rather than always laying it on one guy.

  368. RGM says:

Give ’em this much: they’re firing hard now.

  369. HotHabs says:

Good pressure on the PP, but can’t get a shot on Emery

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  370. sidhu says:

Can’t deny that we have character – the boys are trying hard.

    We will come back.

  371. Ali says:

    Komi is pissed.

  372. the_vipah says:

All we need is one lucky break like the two that Ottawa got.

  373. The Teacher says:

Hey, they are trying, can’t hurt to have a little faith, but man, that was disgusting.

  374. Yeats says:

    Pass that joint!

  375. Moey says:

Well at least the guys aren’t lying down, can they come back? Man, that would be amazing.

  376. HotHabs says:

Impressively, the Habs are making a game of this one. If they score before the period’s done, maybe just maybe they can pull this one off. With this kind of effort they deserve a comeback. I recant my blowout comment from earlier. There might just be a glimmer of hope here…

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  377. Chuck says:

Just got in… what did I miss?

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  378. sidhu says:

No penalty on Fisher???? What the..

  379. The Teacher says:

Timo, i know it’s disgusting but relax. Every team needs character games.

If they gave up, then we’d be crap, but we haven’t so far.

  380. The Teacher says:

    The score says it all.

  381. Bean says:

Hey, did you hear they’d be cracking down on hits from behind this year??

Another ref who never got the memo apparently.

  382. HotHabs says:

A horrid start that saw Huet yanked after just a few minutes. Habs have been pouring it on and trying to make a game of it. I don’t know if Price has faced much since coming in.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  383. yathehabsrule says:

CBC guy on Komi” “he brings that nasty all the time”….tell us something we didn’t already know boys

  384. yathehabsrule says:

If you read the memo completely, you would see the fine print that excludes his on the Canadiens

  385. HotHabs says:

4th line buzzing around Emery all period. love to see them pop one in or at least steam-roll that loser!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  386. the_vipah says:

    Man so frustrating.

I hate Ottawa more then any other team in this league other then maybe New Jersey. This is just painful.

Unlike Ottawa, NJ actually has a chance to win the cup.

  387. sidhu says:

Quick summary of the game – Brisebois takes ceremonial face-off, yada yada yada, it’s 3-0 after one.

  388. Chuck says:

Looks like Huet wanted the night off tonight. 3 goals on 4 shots?!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  389. The Teacher says:

Huet’s jealous of Halak and Price’s vacations in Hamilton. Trying to get one for himself.

  390. RGM says:

Ottawa had two shots since running Huet right out of dodge. Hopefully the Habs will continue to carry the play against the Sens, and hopefully we’ll get the puck in the net, as it’s clear Emery hasn’t brought his best tonight either.

  391. Norm0770 says:

They only had 4 on him before that… But no one on the Habs have been able to get to the rebounds in the crease.

  392. HotHabs says:

Ottawa had all the right stuff early. They were hungry. Montreal looked like they were taking a walk in the park on D, and Huet must’ve been dreaming of some Parisienne babe! Maybe he ran into Chantal Machabee before the game?

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  393. The Teacher says:

    Ok Timo??

Begin, Smokes and Kostops have shown TONS of character tonight..come on!

They were the ones who got some spark back into our team!

  394. mrstewart61 says:

    Smolinski line -2

  395. frank81 says:

What’s the over/under on Chipchura being recalled after tonight?

  396. Chuck says:

Do you think that he could make in from Hamilton in time for the third period?

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  397. ebk says:

the 4th line came out and crapped in the bed, 2 shifts two goals against. wow

long way back. The team kept working hard, maybe things will change.

  398. The Teacher says:

Huet had some influence on that front.

  399. Yeats says:

They were freakin’ dreadful, bordering on woeful, but nevertheless awful!

  400. sidhu says:

What is Cherry talking about – the first clip was Pleks-Kovy, the second clip had Markov passing to Kovy.

  401. The Teacher says:

    Are you surprised?

  402. Y says:

    1 word – Senile

  403. yathehabsrule says:

he was showing how Kovy gets open…first clip he was wide open and slappped his stick after the play went dead to get his guys attention…

  404. HotHabs says:

Koivu line looks like they might put some points on the board.

Ryder playing like a russian sailor on a vodka run

Komi is a bull nailing anything in red – don’t know about him playing with La Soupe

Put out an APB for missing persons: LaPierre, Lats, Kosti jr.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  405. Y says:

So I guess that makes us like 0-150-10 when Breezer is in the lineup?

  406. The Teacher says:

You forgot a few shootout losses I think.

  407. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, not in the frame of mind you are in, no I would have to agree with you :)

  408. ebk says:

they should be sitting in the dressing room with him.

  409. The Teacher says:

With all due respect, Smolinski and Begin maybe, but Tom the Bomb has brought it tonight.

  410. Chuck says:

Sorry… at first I read that as “sh*tting in the dressing room with him”. Still made sence, though.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  411. ebk says:

    with all due respect, lol

  412. ebk says:

    like your idea better

  413. Y says:

Hope not, that would infer a case of some nasty GI bug

  414. Chuck says:

He pronounced his name KoRvalev… numerous times. He and Bob Cole were made for each other!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  415. Y says:

Well its not too late for em, they legalized that sort of thing a few years back

  416. RGM says:

Don’t forget Harry Neale. Their PbP earlier today was just atrocious. They figured that Datsyuk had deflected Detroit’s second goal (wasn’t even close to the puck) and Neale wasn’t quite sure if Antropov deflected the puck in for the winning goal (which he clearly did). Unless Jim Hughson is calling it, I will not watch the Habs on CBC.

See you April 5th at the Bell Centre!

  417. Chuck says:

In my opinion, Hughson is easily the best hockey play-by-play guy in the country.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  418. Y says:

Hughson and that guy from Rogers Sportsnet Vancouver were the bomb in the old EA NHL games

  419. the_larry says:

    That coaches corner was brutal

  420. the_vipah says:

    About Huet,

    First goal was a fluke/tip.
Second goal was a lucky break for the sens and the D could have picked up Huet on that one with a back-check or a clear off the goal line.
Third goal he had no chance.

Let lay off him and perhaps target the Team defence for giving the other team so much open ice.

If we’d come out hitting earlier, this game might be 3-0 for us. Instead we let those lame figure skaters do their thing and now we gotta claw our way back.

  421. fun police says:

tough to win when your goalie lays an egg in such a big game. don’t give me the junk about first and third goals not his fault. 3 goals on four shots. our fourth line is playing well, but getting too much ice time. they can’t score, regardless how much time they spend in ottawa’s end. carbo should shorten the bench considerably and try to get back in the game.

  422. Yeats says:

Just like pickup, next goal wins!

  423. Gooner says:

Huet only let in one he would like to have back. The others were not his fault at all. Besides that the D never showed up for the first five minutes. That being said the whole team should take the blame for this poor start. There are still two periods left to go so let’s hope we make a game of it. We win as a team and we lose as a team.

  424. Keith says:

Those HNIC hacks need to get the hell off the port-a-poti and go to bed.

  425. The Teacher says:

    Second goal was utterly pathetic.

First goal might have been deflected, but as usual, it was a goal from the blue line.

  426. Yeats says:

He bit the root, end of f’n story. We need a kicker who can steal the odd game if we’re gonna go anywhere.

  427. HotHabs says:

Good point about the D coming out soft, but Huet was not in this one and it was really evident on the 2nd goal. However, even if Huet is not to blame, it was smart to pull him.

Oh, and those “figure skaters” happen to be Alfredson, Heatley, and Spezza: they all score 6’s on my cards!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  428. fun police says:

load of junk. has ottawa’s defense played spectacular? no, their goalie has kept them in. huet didn’t. he’ll bounce back next game, but to say it’s not his fault is poor assessment.

  429. MICP says:

Im glad that I am at work getting paid to follow this game. What a joke. If I did my job like they are doing theirs I would have been fired loooong ago.
Its reasons like this game, like last game and like blowing 3 goal leads I really feel we will be fighting for that 8th and final playoff spot.

  430. the_vipah says:

I played goal for many years, those happen. Sometimes the puck just finds a hole. You’d like your D to pick you up there. Unfort everyone just watched.

  431. HotHabs says:

    Glad I’m watching RDS

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  432. the_vipah says:

They will all look good on the golf course in mid may πŸ˜‰

That team is as soft as it gets.

  433. HotHabs says:

LOL… you really are on a roll tonight!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  434. Yeats says:

Hey, back to live play. Woooo wooo!

  435. Ali says:

this rivalry needs to be less one sided to heat up.

  436. Mr Wonderful says:

It’s funny how the loonie left media like Boone the Loone hate Cherry but the regular folks love the guy. Says a lot about the disconnect between the media elites and the general public.

A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.
    Sir Winston Churchill

  437. Les-Habitants says:

Big, big PP…a goal here, and we got 2 periods to even it out.

  438. Yeats says:

Tis is a really crappy PP.

  439. sidhu says:

What is this fancy crap – we are down, just get pucks towards the net

  440. Chuck says:

I think that Kovy needs to sharpen his skates…

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  441. Les-Habitants says:

    Not one shot on net…

  442. HotHabs says:

Ya know, if the Habs actually get a couple of quality shots on Emery, this will be a different game. He looked really shaky in the first and didn’t have a lot of high percentage shots

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  443. Y says:

Sure if the regular guy you speak of lives in a trailer swilling back cans of Coors.

  444. Les-Habitants says:

    For the love of god…

  445. The Teacher says:

slashing on Lats, but why am I not surprised there was no call?

  446. the_vipah says:

Well there you go. If you can beat a backup in the AHL, then you aren’t winning too many games.

  447. The Teacher says:

DING DING DING, we have a winner.

but I do like Cherry sometimes, just not when the Leafs are still in.

  448. Gooner says:

I just watched a power play and Ottwa’s defence did a pretty good job shutting us down. Blocking shots and Emery didn’t have to do too much. So you better re assess your comments.

  449. The Teacher says:

Did you play in the NHL as a first string goalie (apparently?)

That goal (2nd) should NEVER happen.

  450. J.T. says:

I guess when God was giving out hands, Lats was in the height line.

  451. the_vipah says:

Why is that not a f’in diving call??

  452. corson27 says:

I wonder if Huet has a problem with Price – quick look back with Price in Mtl Dec teams has 6 wins 8 losses – Jan Price goes to Hamilton team has 8 wins 4 losses – Feb Price comes back team has 2 wins 2 losses and tonight Huet is gone after 5 minutes. Coincidence?

  453. Kilgore Trout says:

ok. hands up, regular guys – who here loves don cherry?

  454. HotHabs says:

He definitely wasn’t in the speed line!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  455. The Teacher says:

I know, behind the back passes in the middle of the ice in a 3-0 game, not too smart. Kosty should have shot there.

  456. Yeats says:

The media elites no longer carry rifles when they cover wars. And, I can’t remember one of them losing their lives on 9/11. When the shit hits the fan, they hope others will carry the freight. Thank God others do!

  457. The Teacher says:

Maybe he was in the 8 items or less line?

  458. the_vipah says:

Zero luck. Emery is playing so far above his head that Patrick Roy is getting worried.

  459. whitecat says:

Emery is an effing wall tonight :(

  460. Y says:

    Come again por favor?

  461. Chuck says:

We’re making Emery look liks an All-Star.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  462. frank81 says:

He was the clear #1 while Price was in Hamilton. Maybe he has some sort of inferiority complex.

  463. HotHabs says:

Another PP – get some shots on the damn net boys!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  464. Chuck says:

So basically you’re saying that it’s Price’s fault that we’re losing even when he’s not playing?

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  465. HotHabs says:

He’s made a couple of nice stops this period, but wasn’t the same story in the first – shaky!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  466. fun police says:

agreed. not in a game like this. as well as huet has played the last little while, its games like this that drive you crazy

  467. HotHabs says:

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve read in a long time!!! Who do you work for? La Presse?

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  468. the_vipah says:

I honestly wonder if you have two brain cells in that head of yours to rub together.

    They happen.

Watch some f’ing games. Maybe check out Patrick Roy’s performance in that final game he played for us. Or perhaps when he thought he had it in his glove while with Colorado and instead it was on the ice and went in. Or perhaps Roman Turek getting scored on from center by Nolan when he was with St. Louis or perhaps when Cloutier let one in from center against Lidstrom in the playoffs or the numerous times that Osgood has done that same thing from center.

  469. Bean says:

    You’re kidding, right?

Yours is the first semi-compliment I’ve heard directed at that blowhard in five years. And this is coming from the definition of “regular folks.”

  470. The Teacher says:

    In response to you.

Good thing you don’t have two, as you might start a fire with all this friction.

  471. sidhu says:

Here we go, Teach and his definition of what counts as a loss :)

  472. Y says:

I think he influences Huet by whispering “I’m going back to Paris this weekend and you’re not Nanana Boo boo” in between stoppages. Therein lies the real reason we lose when he’s in the lineup

  473. the_vipah says:

Nah a shootout loss is not the same as a loss. Any real hockey fan sees the shootout for what it is, a cheap gimmick. Anyways simple math would show you that two shootout losses are equal to a regular loss points wise.

  474. ebk says:

they should all be hanging out with Huet in the dressing room.

  475. Bill says:

Habs aren’t looking dangerous, and haven’t since mid-way through the last game against Ottawa. The scoring has gone south and Huet and Price have been weak in their recent outings. Looks like the Habs are digging themselves into a bit of a slump. Every team has them. The final test of this regular season will be how quickly they can shake it off.

  476. likehoy says:

time to point out koivu and higgins are our best players tonight, due to their hard work and direct play. Koivu has thrown 3 or 4 hits tonight.

  477. HotHabs says:

I’d even lump Ryder in there

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  478. sidhu says:

How can you not beat that short goalie – just put it upstairs! The shooters for that commercial must have been from the Leafs.

  479. Chuck says:

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  480. Y says:

Funny how when 1 line shows up the rest decide to put it on cruise control. I’d love it if they would put in a solid consistent total team effort like a few games this season. Anyways, I’ve had enough of this torture. Time to watch Sweeney Todd.

    PS: Shutout

  481. zamboni says:

Did we win any faceoff tonight?

  482. The Teacher says:

    Did we?

    I don’t recall one.

  483. J.T. says:

I heard Gainey’s working on a deal involving Ryder and Huet for JC Petit and Nogoalov.

  484. Ali says:

Mighty Mouse is also being shopped.

  485. Bill says:

ahaha then he’ll pick up Kantstopaloss.

  486. sidhu says:

I just heard Huet and a 3rd round pick for the cast from the commercials.

  487. Yeats says:

The shame is that we have outchanced and outworked the Sens tonight, if we only had some hands and a kicker.

  488. Bean says:

I think Chris’ll have his work cut out for the next best-of-the-week “Bench Talk” feature, there’s been some real gems tonight.

I’ll take any excuse to smile during this exercise in frustration disguised as a hockey game.

  489. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, i think Yeats was on a mission tonight.

wonder how the Miami/Michigan game is going.

  490. Bill says:

These blow-out games we have no chance of winning are such a horrible combination of tedium and agony.

  491. Yeats says:

Don’t twist youself with this nonsense. If you’re in the States and on DirecTV, go to channel 636. Mich v. Miami. 2-1 Miami after one. You can get caught up on Max Pacs.

  492. Ali says:

Its a huge powerplay, essential for us to score, and of course Breezeby is one the ice.

Why oh why did he have to be on that Cup winning team.

  493. fun police says:

i’d rather kots jr. on the point instead of breezer

  494. zamboni says:

Ok Breezer, it wasn’t all your fault you couldn’t hold the puck at the blue line, but did you had to give it away when you chased back for the puck?

  495. fun police says:

lets get one and make the third period interesting.

  496. the_larry says:

“…eludes the hit from Komisarek, who had evil intentions” HAHA! πŸ˜€

  497. Bill says:

looks awfully easy when they do it.

  498. The Teacher says:

Well Price made the first stop. Too bad Heatley banged it out of the air…..

  499. sidhu says:

Great. Price stopped the first one, can’t fault him there.

  500. the_vipah says:

    Pull price.

  501. RGM says:

See you April 5th at the Bell Centre!

  503. Les-Habitants says:

    And it’s 4-0
..Heatley comment to Komi about “coming to play” w
    well…looks like we weren’t ready

  504. Ali says:

alright, i dont want to wait around for this to get uglier.

    Goodnight guys.

  505. The Teacher says:

I strongly disagree with your first statement,

but I #%^#%^%^#$ wholeheartedly agree with your second.

  506. Les-Habitants says:

    Put Markov back with Komi

we need at least one good d-pairing, cause right now there is nothin’ there

  507. whitecat says:

I’m starting to lose my “Pollyanna” attitude about coming back from this mess…..

  515. Yeats says:

Is Lester Patrick in the stands?

  516. Gooner says:

Why not? I’m sure if it was Huet you would be the first to say he should not have let the rebound out.

LMFAO I’m halfway through my second Colt 45 πŸ˜› It’s helping to dull the pain of watching this.

  518. fun police says:

fourth line is getting torched tonight.

  519. sidhu says:

haha forget Tim Horton’s, we need Captain Morgan’s!

  520. J.T. says:

Sometimes when I see Komisarek out there, I do a double-take because he looks so much like Larry Robinson. Then I see him with Bouillon and I snap back to reality.

  521. the_vipah says:

    100% agreed.

  522. Ali says:

Would you give up a snakebit Higgins, who is a borderline 1st line winger and a 1st for Hossa, who is an elite winger?

I would, if we can get him locked up for past this year.

As much as I like Higgins, if he gets us that finisher then hes benefiting us more then he himself could. We have other guys that can step up as leaders.

  523. The Teacher says:

    That was hateful!

  524. Ali says:

Carbonneau has line-combination ADD, and its really severe on some days, like this one.

WTF is up with Bouillon and Komi, since the start of the game????

  525. the_vipah says:

If we want to win the cup we need to avoid wimps like Hossa.

  526. fun police says:

  527. The Teacher says:

I agree, he’s not right for our team.

  528. the_vipah says:

Yeah nice skipping pass. All Breezers fault.

    Terrible call.

  529. sidhu says:

What a play Patrice – can’t hold the zone and then take a penalty.

What more evidence do we need that he should NOT be in the lineup?!?!

  530. The Teacher says:

Umm, why did Breezer get a penalty again?

  531. Yeats says:

Max Pacs ties it at two! What a freakin laser!!!

  532. the_larry says:

that was not a penalty! he played that perfectly. dont get on him for crap like that

  533. Ali says:

    I just realized why.

The answer is old, useless and has a nickname that is not funny anymore because its so true.

and he just took a penalty.

With no Hamrlik in the lineup, we gotta screw over someone else to play with him.

I guess Streit drew the short straw.

  534. The Teacher says:

    Details, details!!!

  535. sidhu says:

Impersonating a National Hockey League player.

  536. Yeats says:

Cough up in the slot and unlike Higgins buried it high right corner.

  537. The Teacher says:

Any chance we could pry him away at the end of this college year?

  538. Yeats says:

I don’t think he will go the full four years, if that is what your asking. That guy they signed from Denver is a cracker too. Top scorer on the number 7 ranked NCAA D-1 team. BG may not make the “big” deal, but he is making a hell of a lot of little ones that could pay dividends in the future.

  539. The Teacher says:

Trotter? Yeah but he IS 21. Must be a reason why no one had signed him as of yet? But I agree, he is making some smart moves. Hope they pay off.

How many years will Pax stay at Michigan?

  540. HotHabs says:

    Ronald McDonald as head coach?

  541. Bill says:

I’m in New Brunswick with Expressvu :(

  542. Yeats says:

    My condolences.

  543. Bean says:

Miami up 2-1 the last time I checked.

  544. Les-Habitants says:

  545. corson27 says:

Breezer misses another one and then a penalty, let’s hope this is his last game for a while, PP goal, thanks Breezer

  546. MikeMcLaren says:

    Okay, terrific!

  547. whitecat says:

    OMG this is a disaster!!!

  548. Chuck says:

WTF? Another one batted out of the air?!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  549. the_vipah says:

    Spezza with the hat trick.

He always kills us…why you ask?

We refuse to lay the body on him. We are way too soft and its beginning to show.

  550. Les-Habitants says:

    His FIRST career hat-trick…
glad we’re the team that spezza will remember owning for the rest of his career

  551. fun police says:

you sound like toronto media, we are not a soft team.

  552. Yeats says:

Announcers: big 6’2″; 220 lbs and shows flashes of brilliance.

  553. Les-Habitants says:

Yeats, what you watching and where can I tune in?

I’m assumig your watching some NCAA hockey?

  554. Norm0770 says:

Great shift by Breezer. Lets the puck get past him at the point, then takes a holding penalty. Then Ottawa scores on the powerplay. That guy should never play again in the NHL.

  555. NLhabsfan says:

Guess I will get another brew.

  556. Keith says:

    I second that.

  557. frank81 says:

Might as well make up some sort of drinking game. I would suggest taking a sip every time Ottawa scores, but you’d be pretty drunk by the end of the second period.

  558. Blarneylad says: word to explain my feelings of this game. All the bounces are going in ottawa’s favor. But u can’t blame it all on bounces, this is a bad effort from montreal. 2 losses in a row now, lets see how this team bounces back.

  559. Keith says:

    That’s all she wrote :-(((((((((((

  560. Bill says:

Perspective: except for Detroit, every team in the NHL has sucked for parts of the season, even as hard as the Habs have sucked this week. Which is extremely, extremely hard … like chrome-off-a-trailer-hitch, golf-ball through a garden hose type hard sucking.

  561. Ali says:

Can’t Komisarek accidently take out Brisebois with a hit?

  562. J.T. says:

GET embarrassed? I think they rounded the corner of “embarrassed” about two goals ago and now they’re headed down the stretch of “completely owned and humiliated.”

  563. The Teacher says:

  564. the_vipah says:

Looks like the team has given up on this one now.

  565. Les-Habitants says:

    Yah mike, I’m still watching…
Not sure why, but I’ll probabley watch the whole mess

  566. Keith says:

I hate to say it but we are playing like the laffs were before they beat us on thursday night.

  567. teamplayer says:

i thought mtl already went through a rough stretch… and i think det is going through theirs right now theyve lost the last two games, i know its not much but considering before those 2 games they were on pace to beat their record of 62W’s

  568. MICP says:

I am at work getting paid and I am following your blog.
Glad I did not get someone to cover me so I could watch it.
This is our young team. Take the good and take the bad. Pray for #8.

  569. whitecat says:

Hey, anyone still watching this mess? At least I’m getting paid.

Smartass and yes diehard fans are still watching ….however agonizing it is lol.

  570. J.T. says:

Hey Boone…short memory. Have you forgotten the Ovechkin bitch-slapping they got two weeks ago?

  571. MICP says:

So our guy will break his hand?

  572. HotHabs says:

At this rate it’ll be 8-0 by the end of this torturous spectacle. And we’re only 3 points behind the Sens. I think Ottawa is making a strong statement to the Habs: stop looking ahead and start looking over your shoulder cuz we’re here to stay!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  573. Yeats says:

When they ask the Habs to play next year on Hockey Day in Canada, Gainey should just pass and ask them to invite the Black Hawks or Rangers.

  574. The Teacher says:

Which guy? Our whole team has no hands tonight, they’d be punching with their elbows.

  575. sidhu says:

Kosto’s probably due to lose another fight

  576. NLhabsfan says:

    Anyone miss Hamrlik??

  577. yathehabsrule says:

He said by one line…not by one guy

On the bright side I have Spezza in my Yahoo pool…and also Higgins, Kovalev, Kostitsyns, Markov and Komisarek….and +/- counts so I likely didn’t gain ground!

  578. The Teacher says:

Has Begin even fought this year?

  579. J.T. says:

And we play these guys HOW many times before the end of the year?

  580. ZepFan2 says:

My prediction for next game, Ryder sits and Breezeby plays. sigh

  581. MICP says:

    Agree 100%.

    Look at their top line.
Our top line is going to get better with time.
Did anyone really think that we were as good as a #1 or #2 seed?
I say #7 or maybe #6 at best.

  582. J.T. says:

Okay, the Ovechkin LINE then…only Ovechkin got most of the goals.

  583. The Teacher says:

    5 minute PP?

    does it really matter?

  584. Gooner says:

I don’t think it would matter who was in goal tonight. Our D did not get the job done.

  585. sidhu says:

At least BG will have more incentive to make some improvements at the trade deadline.

  586. J.T. says:

Wouldn’t it be awesome if they could come back here? Okay, yeah…I’m drinking.

  587. Les-Habitants says:

    what THE HELL!?!??!?
    It’s a 5 on 3 FOR US!

  588. whitecat says:

If we can’t score now then I give up! Yessssssssssss GOAL …at least this won’t be a shutout!!! Price with the assist …awesome!

  594. MICP says:

I thought it was a matter of time. It seems we do it every year.

  595. Norm0770 says:

Breezer doesn’t. When Hammer and O’Byrne come back Breezer shouldn’t see another minute. Not that he should really be in tonight…

  596. Yeats says:

I’m getting it on DirecTV Channel 636. There may be a live feed on the computer try

  597. Bean says:

Max Pacioretty and the Wolverines takin’ on Miami.

  598. Yeats says:

No, Miami of Ohio the number 1 team in the nation!

  599. Les-Habitants says:

Thanks, I need to watch some hockey that won’t piss me off

  600. Bean says:

I know it’s the RedHawks from Ohio, hahaha. I dunno where the previous brainfart came from, but I was pretty red in the face when I re-read my post!

I blame it on the Sens.

  601. the_vipah says:

    wake up

  602. Gooner says:

We are as soft as the butt on that kid your picture. lol

  603. The Teacher says:

At least Ian, Naila et al. can cheer about SOMETHING!

  604. vic says:

Why did carboneau break up komi and markof and why the h… does he putting out brisbois .
genius at work again.I wish Gainey would take this guy for a walk

  605. J.T. says:

Alright! Only four more to OT!

  606. sidhu says:

Well at least it’s not a shutout

  607. MikeMcLaren says:

So if we put this game behind us here we can look ahead to next week.

On Tuesday and Wednesday? Back-to-backs against Tampa Bay and Florida.

Saturday and Sunday? Back-to-backs against the Flyers.

So which goalie plays what games in this one?

I think whatever the coach decides, Halak and Danis will rise to the challenge.

  608. Matt_in_TO says:

Price hasn’t played that bad tonight

  609. fuhgawz says:

hey look at us …. we just might have a shot at Stamkos yet ——

  610. Les-Habitants says:

    Ok…I feel a little better
It’d be nice to score a 2nd one

Price gets a point to boot

    Finally we broke his shutout

  614. Les-Habitants says:

    Another 5 on 3…??
    Am I allowed to hope??

    Someone tell me…can i??

  615. HotHabs says:

NO!!!!!!! There will be no hope in this place tonight, you hear??????

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  616. Les-Habitants says:

If Hammer isn’t ready yet, we’re putting Dandy back on d

    I’m tired of his crap

but at least we start the period with a 5 on 3
would be nice to score, then we can at least have a chance.

  617. the_larry says:

no.. save it for when theres actually a glimmer

  618. Bill says:

You’re allowed to hope. And the Habs are allowed to dash your hopes.

  619. Les-Habitants says:

I forgot the Breezer gets PP time

  620. likehoy says:

haha false hope! i cant’ believe they got me to watch the third period…i was ready to shut her down

    3rd period lines

    ryder koivu kovalev
    kositsyn – plekanec – kostitsyn
    lats – laps – higs

  621. Keith says:

They need to come on in the third with some freekin pride on the line. What a F^%&ing mess of a game.

  622. J.T. says:

Does anyone on RDS actually ask questions? They just seem to make obvious statements, then stick the mic in the players’ faces for some kind of response.

  623. Wencz says:

We’ve had several opportunities to get back into this, even at 5-0. You pot a couple and it’s a game. No sense of urgency here, no fight in ’em. Very disappointing.

  624. teamplayer says:

cbc said “ryder was going down anyway”
i thought the only reason he lost his balance was because the sens player reached and pulled his left shoulder back and pulled him back and fell over his leg, maybe he didnt mean to do it, but it was an easy tripping call

  625. Chuck says:

Well at least it’s something to build on for the 3rd period. Hopefully we can dig ourselves out of humiliation.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  626. RGM says:

What do you say after a couple periods like this? Yay for my hockey pool? Yay for Carey getting his first NHL point? There’s still hope, go team go? I just hope that the third period isn’t yet another mini-slaughter.

See you April 5th at the Bell Centre!

  627. Yeats says:

3-2 Miami, about 8:00 to go in the second.

  628. Chuck says:

    Now what did Brisebois do?

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  629. ebk says:

who made that candy-assed play on Heatley’s goal.

set up some momentum for the tampa game. work hard and see what happens.
The Koivu line has looked good at least.

  630. Yeats says:

You really suck tonight? Well, yes.

  631. The Teacher says:

    I think it was Komi.

  632. likehoy says:

    that’s the point…he doesn’t do anything right.

  633. Yeats says:

Michigan just tied it at 3. Man, this is fun hockey to watch!

  638. HotHabs says:

LOL – that is really the truth. Chantal’s interview was exactly like that!

  639. ebk says:

    just saw the replay. Kostopoulos

  640. Chuck says:

So far he’s +1, though he was in the penalty box for one goal. Yep… I guess it’s all his fault tonight.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  641. Yeats says:

I’m a big fan of NCAA D-1. Older players, legendary coaches, great rivalries, it is all good!

  642. wild flower says:

    My perceptions:

This is not as bad as it looks. When both teams are ready to play the Habs actually dominate for stretches. A terrible start has destroyed this game.

People to blame (but not crucify):
Plekanec (weak on the puck, terrible face offs)
Bribois (trying hard but just doesn’t have what it takes)
Hamerlik is very important to the stability of our defence

    People not to blame:
Price (some bs goals after great saves – the hockey gods have allowed the Senators to capitalize on very small rebounds batted out of mid air – this would not happen most games)
Koivu – Ryder – Higgins (Koivu seems very happy to have Ryder back – it shows)

    Hamilton standouts this afternoon:

    O’Byrne, D’agostini
    Halak was fine
    Chiptura – just ok

  643. Moey says:

We barely contained them last week without two of their top guys, are you really surprised at this? I’m not, predicted a blowout to my Sens friend (and refused to bet him) after the laffs beat us. But sometimes, it’s crap to be right.

  644. ebk says:

hey buddy, wifes watching a movie, don’t get the ncaa and I’m hoping for a Kovalev special in the 3rd

  645. Bill says:

Dick Irvin, way to work in a mention of Leaf propaganda on CBC. Apology accepted.

  646. The Teacher says:

He’s the one who dove for nothing?

  647. sidhu says:

    Bring up OB, waive Brisebois!

  648. Yeats says:

Better light some candles and pray to the whole Communion of Saints.

  649. teamplayer says:

yes why do i care what happens in the home of dustin penner?

  650. Yeats says:

Max Pacs just tried to set up the go-ahead goal and his linemate whiffed. Damn, this kid is good!

  651. NLhabsfan says:

    Agree completely.

  652. HotHabs says:

I, for one, was expecting a nasty game tonight with Heatley and Alfie back. And, if most here were honest with themselves they’d admit they were fearing the worst tonight.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  653. Les-Habitants says:

The only lines I’d tweak would be the 4th line, I guess…someone is gonna sit for Dandy next game.
    and of course the D-pairings…
Breezer out, Komi and Markov back together.
OB back in with Streit, Gorges with Cube

Well…let’s see if they can make this game interesting.

  654. HotHabs says:

    What did Irvin say?

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  655. J.T. says:

Hamrlik’s absence is a big factor tonight. Not only does he eat huge minutes and offer stable D during them, but now that he’s out, Carbo has been trying to use Markov/Gorges and Komi/Bouillon in an effort to spread the good defencemen around a bit more. Now no one is playing with his usual partner and everything is chaos on the back end. This game is also underlining why Gainey will trade for a real shut-down centre at the deadline. Smolinski is NOT it.

  656. jew4jah says:

i would add carbo to the list of people to blame.

    1) should of called a time out after the 2nd goal. we all knew it, why didn’t he?
    2) splitting komi & markov

  657. Xtrahabsfan says:

Well I had hoped for a better outcome but I new this was going to happen. When you only have one line and it gets shut down and the opposition is scoring in bunches…writings on the wall.LIke I said before ,it won’t be fixed until it’s broken and then some with Gainey! We need goal scorers who are consistent AND can check as well and have SIZE!Bring in more Bull Dogs and once and for all get rid of Ryder,Brisby,Smoke ,Dandy andBegin!

  658. The Teacher says:

You must have seen wrong, because this replay clearly showed Komi sliding right on by.

with all due respect of course πŸ˜›

  659. Moey says:

Our boys are coming along, but Ottawa is a better team hands down. We’re not there yet, that’s reality.

  660. ebk says:

teach watch the replay. pretty clear to me

  661. J.T. says:

Yay! Hopefully he throws his education away for a pro hockey career sooner rather than later.

  662. Yeats says:

Holy crap, a kid on Miami just got a fiver and a game for hitting from behind!

  663. Les-Habitants says:

I agree completely, as much as I dream about Hossa lol

But who could that centre be?? I don’t see many good defensive centre available right now.

  664. likehoy says:

makes no sense…how is he +1?? he wasn’t on for any even strength goals cause the only goal we scored was on the power play

he’s just useless…it’s not all his fault…he just can’t play hockey anymore. No foot speed, no size intimidation, his shot is peewee level. Only thing we can say is that he’s improved on his giveaways. Can’t wait till the season’s over so we don’t have to re-sign his useless body.

  665. The Teacher says:

Haha I just did! see above πŸ˜‰

  666. NLhabsfan says:

As long as Ryder is being trashed this year..Ryder,Higgins and Koivu like and know each other.

  667. Chuck says:

Give Hamrlik a raise right now!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  668. Moey says:

You always have nice pics, what part of the world was your last one in, beautiful coastline.

  669. J.T. says:

    Wouldn’t mind Holik or Fedorov.

  670. J.T. says:

  671. Yeats says:

He very well may, but you know where I stand on the issue. A quality education is what separates NCAA D-1 from Major Junior. If you don’t make it out of the latter, you spend you life driving the Molson truck. I really would like to see Canada make the leap and establish a good university hockey system and put Major Junior to rest.

  672. ebk says:

me, Holik and the last of Smolinski

  673. ebk says:

ain’t worth the argument but Komi makes a bad play as well but Kostopoulos needs to do more than that candy-assed reach with his stick and let Heatley in to the slot. If you think that was Komi’s fault, I gotta disagree.
I’m done with this cuz it don’t really matter.

watch your quota tonight teach. :)

    have a good night

  674. MPWRD42 says:

I guess I could admit Koivu’s line has been playing pretty well in the offensive end and getting their chances but just can’t cash in on their chances….. however, something seems strange here: Ryder and Higgins are 0 in +/-, but Koivu is -4 already (strange… do those stats seem right?). To boot, Koivu is one of our top faceoff guys tonight at a whopping 42% (Pleks is 43%)… we’re getting killed in the faceoffs.

Oh well… let’s hope they make it at least respectable in the 3rd and not throw in the towel for the last 20 minutes.

My final thought before the 3rd starts…the forwards have been doing a terrible a job at coming back tonight – the poor D are getting swarmed and getting no help.

  675. Yeats says:

Pacs helps set up the go-ahead goal on the 4-3. 4-3 Michigan. This kid can play this game!

  676. The Teacher says:

    Yeats, you’re such a tease!

  677. yathehabsrule says:

Think I’ll listen to the 3rd online with the play by play done in Hindi by two women….Beats the turds on CBC english!

  678. Yeats says:

Pacs is getting a boatload of ice time. And, he’s a freshman!

  679. the_vipah says:

Man just zero luck all game.

  680. Chuck says:

If anything, we’re really good at hitting posts tonight!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  681. Keith says:

4 posts and a crossbar, horrible luck.

  682. the_vipah says:

    Hooking? lol

    Not even close

  683. The Teacher says:

Hahaha, Breezer is echoing all your sentiments in the press box!!

    He just said “F$^# me!”

  684. sidhu says:

    Two Brisebois penalties. Two goals.

  685. the_vipah says:

Meanwhile garbage ottawa gets all the luck.

They can use it on the golf course in May.

Someone please get a nice clean open ice check on one of those Ottawa bums and send them to the hospital.

  686. Yeats says:

4-3 Michigan at the end of two. The third should be a cracker. No one this year has scored four or more goals twice on Miami. Michigan has yet to lose on the road. Man, Red Berenson has these guys playing hockey. Should have Carbo spend a week with the Red Baron. He could certanly teach him a thing or two or three.

  687. Matt_in_TO says:

Well hopefully Breezy won’t be playing anymore anytime soon

  688. sidhu says:

So that’s what it looks like when a captain scores

  689. frank81 says:

Are you kidding? He’ll be on the first wave of the PP next game. He’ll probably log even more minutes, too.

  690. NLhabsfan says:

    When is O’Byrne due back?

  691. Keith says:

And more salt in the wounds *&^%$#!!@!@!!!!!!

  692. zamboni says:

They capitalize on every chance and we waste every chance.
I wonder why Breezer is still on ice, anybody else (including the captain) and Carbo would have nailed his ass to the bench.
And some were suggesting Jack Adams for our coach.
    Some things never change.

  693. Les-Habitants says:

Call up Halak…Price isn’t ready yet

Call up O’Byrne, until Hammer’s ready

    I am totally disgusted

  694. Gooner says:

I ‘m sorry people but Price should have had that one

  695. J.T. says:

I don’t know why *I* feel embarrassed right now. I didn’t do anything except cheer for these guys.

And I wish to never see Breezer again. Sorry for the few and the desperate who still cheer for him. But he’s making me believe there isn’t enough wine in France to kill this pain.

  696. The Teacher says:

Wow, almost 600 comments for this joke of a game….

  697. MathMan says:

So question — is anyone else worried that the Montreal bandwagon did turn into a pumpkin when they collapsed after the Rangers?

This has all the hallmarks of a tailspin.

Or is Montreal’s defense buying into the invincible-big-line Ottawa hype and are just watching them play?

  698. Les-Habitants says:

He hasn’t been sharp at all, even when in Hamilton

You don’t rush goaltenders…why should we, especially when we have a quality goaltender in Halak whose proven himself to be NHL capable?

  699. fabhab says:

Okay, so I look at the posts on this site but I don’t normally comment.

A couple of points to those who are utterly disgusted with this performance.

    1. We are the second best team in the East (maybe not for long). How many on this site thought that was possible with 27 games left in the season for the Habs? I’m pretty happy with where we are with the number of young contributors we have to the team and the prospects down in the AHL. And I am very confident that Bob will do the right thing to make us competitive in the playoffs.

    2. Let’s face it. Ottawa has gotten the bounces tonight. Heatley’s goal was pure luck (nice bounce off Price right back to Heatley’s stick) and Spezza’s third goal was knocked out of mid-air). Not Huet’s best night either and he will be better down the stretch (I hope).

    3. We are a young team and still have a ways to go. As much as I would like to focus on first place, I would be very happy just making the playoffs and seeing where we go from them. Don’t forget, Ottawa was in the finals last year and this year has to be their year or Brian Murray is looking for a job. Bob has us on the right path and I don’t think this year was the year we were supposed to win the cup. If we can get a second line going (Hello Koivu/Ryder/Higgins), we can be a lot of trouble for teams in the playoffs (especially with our power play).

I’ve spoken my piece. Now I need to get back to my beer. Thanks.

  700. The Teacher says:

Was Kovy auditioning for the russsian ice-dancing team at the Olympics there?

  701. Matt_in_TO says:

It took this long but at least Komi and Markov are back together

  702. likehoy says:

guys we’re going to win 7-6…someone just told me pierre dagenais’s in the stands…he’s going to suit up and score 6 goals..NO WORRIES!

  703. Chuck says:

Price has certainly played a lot better than Huet did. And O’Byrne’s still rehabbing from his broken thumb.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  704. teamplayer says:

o’byrne shouldnt be down for too long, they said only a conditional stint, he shouldnt be gone for too long

  705. likehoy says:

so next game carbo’s going to only dress 19 skaters cause higgins doesn’t show up anyways

  706. The Teacher says:

You must really want him back. You said it twice!

  707. yathehabsrule says:

“3P 20:00: That’s a happy gang of 75 Team 990 listeneers who bussed up for the game with Tony Marinaro.”

in all likelihood that bus is back on the highway right about now

  708. whitecat says:

I agree 100% thank you for saying that !

  709. Yeats says:

Riding that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you better watch your speed.

  710. zamboni says:

I share your pain, but hey, there’s other quality wine from other countries.
At this point I’ll take anything to ease the pain.

  711. sidhu says:

We just signed Paul DiPietro to the same exact contract as Ovechkin. He will have Pierre on his left, Petrov on his right.

  712. Les-Habitants says:

In a game this bad, look for the small positives:

    1) Ryder, Koivu, and Higgins have shown life and have been the team’s best line tonight.

    2) We know now that Komi and Markov should not be split up…that and Breezer should be a healthy scartch

    3) Gainey now has a more realisitc shopping list: while Hossa would be nice, a shutdown center (like Bonk was last year) is priority no.1

  713. Chuck says:

Not before a stop at the liquor store first.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  714. The Teacher says:

Is this Pleky’s worst game of the year?

  715. likehoy says:

andre racicot is rumoured to be suiting up next game so we’re stanley cup winners…forget about competing…they should shut down the season and hand it over to us

  716. Les-Habitants says:

    post no.4

  717. HotHabs says:

RDS notes that Habs have hit 4 posts tonight

  718. Chuck says:

    Ugh… ANOTHER post!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  719. The Teacher says:

Wow, everyone must have LOVED that Breezer pass.

  720. Kilgore Trout says:

    another post…

  721. Xtrahabsfan says:

You better cut back on the Beer if you didn’t see this one comming, but we did hit the post 5-6 times tonite.W e look like an A.H.L. TEAM!

  722. Chuck says:

SO we’ve beat Emery 5 times, and only one has gone in. I think that the whole team’s snakebit tonight!

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  723. sidhu says:

    Popovic and Odelein on D

  724. J.T. says:

Yup…my boy’s been pretty much invisible all night. So much for Kovalev’s comment in Stubbs’ story today about having a bad shift or a bad period, but not a bad game.

  725. mrstewart61 says:

    chris gratton

  726. likehoy says:

brisebois will still be our number 1 dman…

and carbo will be replaced by mario tremblay…but carbo will be kept as a consultant.

  727. teamplayer says:

ive noticed during most games when the pressure is back and forth in a tight game, there isnt too many people who write anything until commercials or whistles. during a game like this its easier to post when you dont wanna watch (or are afraid to watch)

  728. sidhu says:

I like the way Max is playing tonight

  729. J.T. says:

I’m just laughing now. I called “Post!” when they took that last shot…and they hit it!

  730. likehoy says:

    k guys cause i can…

    “the price was costly tonight”

  731. MikeMcLaren says:

    Is it running clock yet?

  732. HotHabs says:

While Pleks has been awful on faceoffs, he’s been well covered thus the assumption he’s playing crap. It’s just what we’ve been dreading: what will happen when teams start finding ways to defend the Pleks line. We’re seeing a glimpse of the future here.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  733. Yeats says:

What the score of the Habs game? I’m settling in for the third of the Michigan/Miami game.

  734. Xtrahabsfan says:

    Hockey Day my ass!!!!

  735. Yeats says:

Pacs again. 5-3 Michigan. This dude is the freakin’ bomb. No doubt about it!!!! His line has accounted for 4 of Michigan’s goals. Acquire the whole line Bob!

  736. Chuck says:

    Here’s how it’s a game of inches:

If the Senators don’t get the two goals that were batted out of the air and 3 of the 5 posts that we’ve hit went in, it would be a tie game.

It’s not really the blowout that it appears to be.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  737. HotHabs says:

Chuck… take it like a man! We were soundly beat in all areas tonight.

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  738. nick says:

I wonder who gets ripped publicly by Carbo in tonights post game interview.

  739. zamboni says:

I bet it won’t be Breezer

  740. Norm0770 says:

I would think Breezer, but he keeps putting him out

  741. likehoy says:

    andrei markov…that’s my bet.

  742. I am Canadien says:

I have pondered this in my mind all year but I must now admit that maybe Saku must be removed from his captainsy. To reflect on the many teams in the league; their captains are the best player on the team. Saku was but is now no longer.
Don’t get me wrong; I still think much of him and all that he has been through no normal man could endure. He did. That said: I think that toll has brought us to a point in the teams timeline where maybe a change is required in order to move tho the next level. Unfortunate: yes. But we need to think beyond Koivu and focus on what the team needs in order to attain what I think they want to attain next year and that is a Stanley Cup for the city of Montreal.
Saku is a Hall of Famer and a great Canadien but time does move on for all of us.

  743. yathehabsrule says:

so add the posts and take away Huet and we’re up 5-3 right??? OK 5-4 Huet had no chance on the first one..

  744. whitecat says:

Watching this game right now has all the same characteristics of watching a car accident….you don’t really want to watch it but you can’t look away…….

  745. whitecat says:

: See that idiot with his face painted red? His children must be so proud.

HAHAHAHAHA Mike I love you (not in that sense) you are amazing!!!!

  746. sidhu says:

    Excellent post, I agree completely.

  747. MathMan says:

Hey, it’ll still be only five points with lots of hockey left to play, and Montreal playing Ottawa twice more.

Ottawa isn’t nearly as good as tonight’s score is making them look, although it would be good if Montreal could find player that don’t buy into the hype and actually don’t make the Pizza Line look like it’s invincible.

  748. zamboni says:

Emery has been solid, and luck has been on his side as well.
We had our chances, just couldn’t cash it.

  749. Yeats says:

Michigan has nine freshman in the lineup and they are 9-0-1 on the road. (Remind you of anyone?) That’s a hockey team! They’ll be ranked number 1 on Monday!

  750. NLhabsfan says:

looks more like Ottawa bullying then anything else.

  751. frank81 says:

I read that Ottawa has been playing .500 hockey since their great start. Granted, they’ve had some bad luck with injuries, but they’re not invincible.

  752. MikeMcLaren says:

Sergei can throw ’em… I appreciate what Boullion’s trying to do and all, but Sergei seems to be more capable in the fisticuffs deparment than Max at this point.

  753. sidhu says:

Damn this. We don’t need SK74 fighting, but at least he didn’t back down. Who do we have that can really handle themselves in these situations? Komi (too valuable to sacrifice)? Kosto (who always loses)? Begin (barely fights anymore)? Cube?

    Now I’m pissed.

BG, I hope you are still watching this game.

  754. sidhu says:

Hey Galley, STFU, why are you assuming that SK74 doesn’t know where he is? I’m sure if he was in such a condition, the Habs staff would be taking care of him.

  755. The Teacher says:

  756. Bill says:

Wow, that Redden’s a real tough guy. Hope he’s proud. Somebody needs to pasted him next time.

  757. HotHabs says:

I’m feeling the same, except Saku will never be in the Hall of Fame – sorry!

enjoying the high’s of being a Habs fan

  758. Chuck says:

Ryder keeps faking himself out with his own dekes.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  759. Joe Habsfan says:

WOW!! this Ottawa team is a classy one…Neil take Laps down from behind and Redden keeps beating on Little K when he’s down…He must be proud..

  760. sidhu says:

Did you see how Redden was fighting like a b-tch at first – throwing punches at SK74’s head with his gloves on? Wonder why SJ would want such a tool.

  761. the_vipah says:

    Wow nice headshot on Gorges.

    Fucking joke

  762. The Teacher says:

Why the %WE^#%^ are we getting iht?

WE ARE THE TEAM DOWN 6-1 send out begin and kostops and ORDER THEM TO FIGHT

  763. Chuck says:

    Nice elbow by Neil there…

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  764. The Teacher says:

yet Carbo keeps sending out the puff-ball

  765. J.T. says:

Hey, one good thing: Price stood up on that last shot. Good for him. He would have gone down like Paris Hilton on video last month.

  766. Les-Habitants says:

Lats with Ryder and Koivu now

  767. sidhu says:

Begin, a “character” guy, has been invisible this evening. Replace him with a tougher guy who can skate.

  768. Joe Habsfan says:

Ryder has played pretty well man

  769. Bill says:

Actually not the worst game this year.

  770. Gooner says:

That was a dumb comment. Besides it could work the other way. Take out Price and the same result. Let’s face it Mr. Price is not ready.

  771. Yeats says:

What’s the score? 5-3 Michigan in the game I’m watching.

  772. The Teacher says:

    LOL, Another contender.

  773. the_larry says:

  774. I am Canadien says:

I admit I am not watching the game any more. What’s the point. With that said; I am pissed as well. Lose to TML and then Ottawa. Why can’t these guys get up for these games. Don’t they know the other teams are certainly up for them!! This is where I question the prep of Carbs and his assistants. As fans I am sure we’re thinking okay boys these are some tough games coming up so you’d better be ready. As coaches are they just sitting around play hacky sack!? Come one wake and smell the brew. We’re in the part of the schedule that may as well be the playoffs!
    Bob: time for a Trade!!!!

  775. The Teacher says:

    Game over, 6-1

  776. yathehabsrule says:

and who better to lead the charge than Sergei Kostitsyn…

  777. Chuck says:

Overall, yes. But three time this evening he’s tried to pull the puck onto his forehand and missed it, giving the puck away in the process.

“All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!”

  778. Yeats says:

Couldn’t get good field position to try for a touch down?

  779. The Teacher says:

We got good field position, but kept hitting the uprights.

  780. showey47 says:

not with breezer as our quarterback

  781. Norm0770 says:

It was a solid hit. No elbow.

  782. zamboni says:

    Tsk tsk tsk Timo,
We don’t wissh anything ill on Habs members.
