I suspect “not” to the mayhem tonite. The Bruins lost the following three games and the Canadiens lost I think 4 of their next five. It was an important game. 24 Mar 11, if the standings look solid, is when Julien will tell the boys to send the message.

but thank the heavens that MARTIN went with his gut instinct and inserted some NAG North American Grit into the lineup, just unfortunate that it takes a MASSACRE before he realizes what we need. Thank God that WHITE is in over Pyatt. White is one heck of a tough kid, hard nosed that will go anywhere, no faceshield, long hair toughness, and on many after the whistle scrums, when a “Hartnell” type would look up and see its White, they back down, because White has been there.. that is the key, being a hardnosed player through the system, not an over abundance of finesse players, really unimaginable that with our top 6 being all finesse, that Martin would load the bottom six the same way… but its changing, by necessity.
Same deal with MARA, massive improvement in the GRIT scale over WEBER…
we have just gained over 100lbs of muscle, over 18″ of height and a truckload of GRIT… and its going to make a difference tonight.
Having one of : HENRY/CONBOY/BONNO on the 4th line would have been the icing on the cake for this match, but Martin is a bit fearful… Dick Irvin would have done it.

Leblanc and Kristo are heavily favoured by Hockey’s Future as MTL’s top offensive prospects outside of the Canadiens system and if you asked a scout, they’d tell you the same, of MTL prospects they have the best offensive upside among their non-professional players right now. Avtsin has had his stock rising for a bit and while his rookie season is not overwhelming, he is also only 19 years old and new to the NA game, he needs a lot more strength training to move along and a couple more seasons in HAM likely but he was considered a steal on draft day that was high-risk only because he’s Russian and no one likes to bet about getting them over from the KHL.
I pick up reports on Bulldogs players from any source I can find, Avtsin is a young player who’s physically outmatched right now and had to deal with some wrist problems going back to last season. Plenty of time for him to develop. He’s a 2009 draft pick after all and this is pretty early in his development. Gallagher is no Locke, he plays tougher than his size would indicate and doesn’t back down, his signature scoring move is skating right into the crease to finish his chance.
You Sir, are out of your mind. What you’re suggesting the Habs do is exactly what the Bs want the most. Martin is too smart and way too experienced to play into this Micky Mouse play. MASSACRE II is not going to happen. We’re going to get a passionate, fast, possibly fairly chippy, playoff-style game. The MASSACRE II is a smokescreen.

Very good Serious! He has been steadily improving all year. The kid also has a great shot, has no trouble joinng the rush, and is not afraid to drop em if need be. I really hope the Habs are looking. Kinda reminds me of PK.

This is March. There is a lot of water that has to run under the bridge before we get to a game that will define “our playoff run.” Usually, that game occurs…during the playoffs. So, relax and enjoy the no-hitter tonight.
For a team that’s beaten us only once in their last 9 efforts, there sure is a lot of moaning and groaning about the Big Bad Bruins. Every team we play tries to push us around. You’d think after the clawing of the last couple years, fans would be excited that we’re not going to have to clinch the playoffs on the last day of the season.
You know, the AK-ELLER-MOEN line wasn’t together for the last game against the Bruins. Be interesting to see how Martin plays them. Should put them up against the Bruins second line, they’re much bigger than the Bergeron line. Or would it be better to go size on size against the Krecji line? Thank God I’m not coaching…

I was at the Hamilton-Toronto back to back games this weekend and Avtsin, who was invisible in both games as he has been all season IMO. A big strong kid like that should have more upside and he has been disappointing.
Go to Copps like I do, and speak to the hardcore fans who know more firsthand, and ask them who has upside on thas team and some will tell you that it is the veteran players who could play in Montreal and write it here on your blog.
Leblanc and Kristo are too early to rate them as as strong top 6 upside. Gallagher reminds me of a Corey Locke, potential but just too small enough to make in at the next level in the NHL.

Thomas Price Renne and luongo 1-4. How Price falls behind carl crawford (isnt he a baseball player?) is beyond me. For some more funny reading look at the centers. they have Henrik Sedin #9..I Live in Van so I am forced to watch everygame and he is top 3 for sure. But I guess these are jsut for us to kick around and debate and it brings tsn word of mouth for how absurd the rankngs are!

Forgot to mention that if McCreary is the NHL’s best, that is the definition of damning with faint praise. I was at the Carolina/Habs game he called and it was the same old thing: Habs called for everything, Canes barely anything.
It’s great that in this boring, watered-down league, there are still a couple of teams who actually dislike each other and get up for the games against each other in a special way.
And it’s great for us as fans to have an enemy team we can really despise. Go watch the ice-chips video on TSN.ca/nhl and see if it doesn’t really tick you off. It’s irrational because we’re completely uninvolved, but it’s so fun and satisfying.

I thought the same about Crawford until I looked at this win-loss record. Price is 31-21-6, and while he’s been our MVP, that’s still a lot of losses. Crawford is 26-12-3 which is statistically better winning % and his GAA is better. I think Price is a better goalie, but these ratings are done on stats, where Crawford, and 4 other goalies have better numbers.
Listening to Team990 today I’m finding it bizarre just how over hyped one game has become. Never have I seen one regular season hockey game drawn so much analysis. You would think the 8-6 game last month was on the level of the 2008 economic collapse, the JFK assassination or 9/11.
So, here comes the Super Bowl of regular season hockey games. I wonder how much a 30 second commercial will be going for tonight.
Gathier and Martin are in NO way responsible for this. Wanting more physical players on the club is a common sentiment, and I can’t say I disagree, but having a figher will not deter this crap. Hell, it happened to the Bruins themselves twice in the past couple of years…and they actually have a tough team (not GOOD mind you, just tough).
This was pure unadulterated homicidal rage on Chara’s part. Rage at loosing yet again. Rage on being beaten time after time by the CH. Rage at one of the all time choke jobs last year….No, there is only one person to blame and that is Zedeno Chara.

I respect your thought Serious but I am just saying, teams and especially the Bruins know they can do whatever they want physcially with our team. And if Patches handn’t gotten hurt, I am sure in the third period we would have seen the whole Bruin team (even players like Marchant, Campbell, Boychuk who shouldn’t be scaring anyone) taking runs at PK and they wouldn’t have been happy until PK was hurt and there is no answer available from the Habs.
Well big win, but … I don’t pray much but I did for Pacioretty. Hope he’s okay, and I don’t mean back in the line-up soon, because I can’t see him back before next year, which is where Chara and his big arm knocked him into. I mean, I’m glad he’s moving his hands and feet and I hope he hasn’t got a brain injury.
OF COURSE CHara is saying it was “unfortunate” and that he didn’t intend it. If he said anything else he’d be arrested. The replay doesn’t lie: Chara sees the stanchion and uses his arm to take Pac’s head into it. After the last game stuff between those two the intent couldn’t be any more obvious.

I tried to get on Habs I/O after the hit, but the server was down.
Chara should be suspended and should go to hell. He had motive (him and Pacioretty have a history), he extends his arm out to lead Pacioretty into the stanchion, the hit was late (puck was gone), and it wasn’t a necessary hockey play to prevent Pacioretty from scoring (Chara’s D partner was back, on the puck).
Chara is going to plead innocence. But you cannot tell me a guy who has played this long does not know that the stanchion is there, and plus he extends his arm specifically to continue guiding Pacioretty into the stanchion.
More broadly, it was a hit that involved the head. This is precisely what the league needs to get rid of. Because Chara is a captain or well-liked (by some) does not exempt him from rules that should protect players when they are vulnerable and take shots to the head nonetheless. In fact, this is an optimal opportunity for the league to demonstrate how seriously it takes these type of unnecessary, dangerous, disrespectful plays to the head that have tremendously bad consequences. Crosby still isn’t back, who knows how long Pacioretty will be out.
To make matters worse, Lucic tries to fight a non-fighter when the game is out of hand and when the class thing to do would be to let the game end given what happened.
Before the game, I had little respect for the Bruins as a fan of the Habs. Now, I have no respect for Chara and Lucic as human beings. This is beyond hockey — these two will get what’s coming to them, whether from the league or some external, karmic force.
I hope Pacioretty has a full and speedy recovery, and I wish the whole Habs I/O family well.

Such a costly win, and I’m not satified even if it’s a huge win for us. I was in tears when the announcer named the third star to Patches and a good long applause to him. It was a heartbreaker to see a good player go down like that, and Patches came into this season with so much confidence he has been a real great part of the team.
Tomorrow, if you guys should see me wearing a Canadiens cap with a “67″ taped on it, I’m keeping it on in hope for a huge recovery to Patches, and if you do the same, he’ll know we still have confidence in him.

Marc Savard was taken out in the full view of the Boston Bruins a supposedly tough team filled with enforcers but it happened all the same. Cooke never answered for his actions.
The eagerly anticipated rematch between the Bruins and Canadiens went almost two periods without the type of controversy seen in a Feb. 9 game at TD Garden which featured 189 penalty minutes. Then, Zdeno Charachecked Max Pacioretty.
Late in the second period, the Bruins defenseman ran the Canadiens forward into the exposed glass that separates the the two benches. Pacioretty’s hit slammed into the the divider, and he fell to the ice instantly.
Pacioretty lay motionless face-down on the ice for a few moments before being lifted onto a stretcher and wheeled off the ice. He appeared to be unconscious for some time, but appeared to have his eyes opened before being lifted onto a stretcher.
Chara was given a 5-minute major penalty for interference, as well as a game misconduct.
Pacioretty, of course, was the Canadien that scored the game-winning goal against the Bruins on Jan. 8 in a come-from-behind win for Montreal at the Bell Centre. Following that goal, Pacioretty skated by Chara, bumping him as he skated by. Chara went after Pacioretty, inciting a small scrum.
So, why exactly was Colin Campbell at the game? He has stated that he recuses himself from all decisions involving the Bruins, but he, coincidently was at this game? Does he go to all of Gregory’s games, like a good hockey Dad? Didn’t think so. He was there so he could see first hand if anything bad happened after the last one. But he can’t rule on anything. So why was he there instead of one of his minions?
I’d like to see the emails that are flying around now!
Chara is a goon. A talented goon, but still a goon who knew exactly what he was doing. He’s been trying to catch Max since that little push in OT a couple of months ago.
Chara will get 3…mark it down. The thing however is that he’ll have to be careful until the playoffs because if he pulls another one like that, they’ll have to suspend him 10 and that might mean missing playoff time.
Chara’s hit on Max was deliberate and he knew exactly what he was doing and the big gorilla should be suspended for the rest of the season at the very least. Typical Bruin reaction when they know they are beaten. The league has to do something about this bullshit. White set the tone early by beating on Boychuk. Mara was a great physical presence, Kostitsyn was playing like a power forward and Price is becoming the franchise. I especially like a point late in the first with the Boston goon squad in the Montreal zone and after the whistle blows Thornton looks around and sees Mara, White and Sopel (all players who weren’t there last time) and nothing happens. Loved it. Now as long as MaxPac is okay I’m a very happy camper.
Get well Patches. Chara is responsible for this but he is not the only one. Gauthier and Martin have not done enough to protect our players. If it wasn’t Patches getting hurt tonight it was going to be PK. And I worry for the game on March 24. I had a bad feeling going into this game.
How long have we been saying that this team needs some people to protect our young assets. The game last month was a clear message that other teams felt like they could do whatever they wanted with our team. Gauthier had up to the deadline to do something about this. There we players available that would have helped protect our players (Belak, Scortini) The Bruins are a classless team and it starts right at the top. Neely salivates at any kind of violence and it flow right down to a goon coach in Julien. All of the Bruins players follow suit and it really showed in the last 3 minutes of this game.
I am not a fan of fighting. But we need to protect our players. Again, get well Patches.
I had the same problem as you and regarding the hit I agree with you that he knew what he was doing. So many times analyst go on about how top players are able to slow down the game and react quicker. Last i checked Chara was a top player, pretty sure he was able to clearly tell what was going to happen, but just to be sure he pushed Pacthes upper body over the boards anyways.
The struggles of today will make the victories of tomorrow that much sweeter.
How the F*CK does Lucic not get a misconduct for instigating in the last 5 minutes? Can there be any doubt what he was trying to get Pouliot to do? He should have been thrown out, without question.
Intent is no defense for Chara – it doesn’t matter if he intended to injure Patch or not. He injured him carelessly during the commission of a penalty – interference. He was committing an illegal play and that careless, illegal play could have killed a player. He has to be suspended for a good long while.
Glad the Habs won…..big win……..onto the MaxPac hit……..Mike Milbury says that Chara should have only received a 2 minute interference penalty on the hit. What a douche. Clearly Chara ran Pac into the partition the puck was well past hem….and I fully believe that Chara knew what he was doing out there….he remembers the shove from Max in the OT game earlier this year. Okay, replay shows chara directing Patches head into the stanchion. Chara knew exactly what he was doing, he was looking at the stanchion as he made the hit. This is a dirty hockey play. Combine this with the past history between Chara and Pacioretty and it is clear what the intent was. The player needs to be disciplined severely. I know the NHL doesn’t operate like this but Chara should be out for at the very least, the same amount of games that Pacioretty is injured.
Besides that disgusting Chara hit, don’t think he meant for that to happen, but it did, he is a piece of shit.
Regardless, this seems to be Ellers coming out party, the guy is everywhere, his back checking has been phenominal and offensive vision superb, too bad it has to be overshadowed but a gutless play from that effing big Slovak!
I don’t know if they did “bend us over again”. Yes they were physical, and yes they may have gotten more hits, but we didn’t sit back, Patches threw some good hits, Eller threw some hits, Mara etc…we weren’t pushed around, played our game and came out with a great W.
As for a W, or healthy MaxPac, i’d take a healthy MaxPac, I don’t wish that on anyone, except maybe Chara

I used to have respect for the Bruins as opponents, I have no more. I have also lost a part of me that sees this game through the innocent eyes of a kid playing it on the driveway, on the backyard rink or in house league… there’s no more respect bewteen opponents out there.

If Chara doesn’t get 10 games suspended I would favour bringing up Henry and Bonneau and forgetting about hockey for the next game.

I wonder if there will be a lengthy suspension for the intent to injure hit on Patches by Chara. He obviously decided to take a liberty since it was 4-0.
I remember watching him with White and Palushaj in a Bulldogs game last season, those three just ruled the ice whenever they stepped on. Could tell then they had a lot of potential for the roles MTL needed.
I think that we shouldn’t get too stuck on Chara’s “intentions”. It doesn’t matter what he intended. At best, he acted in a manner so reckless that he jeopardized the health (and you could argue life) of another player. For his actions the on-ice officials issued a MAJOR penalty and a game misconduct.
Unless the NHL wants to argue that the officials blew the call, he has to be suspended.
I also think that Chara’s past interactions with Pacioretti are not helpful to him. He should draw a longer suspension because of the history between himself and PAtches.

He didn’t have the puck, he wasn’t looking, and now it looks like he’s going to miss significant time with a concussion. You and your lot should f***ing know about concussions. Don’t you f***ing dare tell me that there wasn’t intent. Chara has a history of his like this, just like your entire goddamn classless organization. You are a city of people that glorifies the most base and beautiless aspects of what can be the most beautiful game – fights, violence, thuggery. Good news. Well a matter of degree. It’s only a concussion. I just saw it on RDS. So he will be back at the latest next season. We just need to find out the severity of the concussion.

Whether or not there was malicious intent is a completely moot at this point. You just don’t make a play like that with seconds left to play in the period when the score is 4-0. It’s extremely careless. Whether or not his intent was to destroy patches. the hit was malicious and he should be given heavy discipline by the Cambell.
This is whats wrong with the league though. A seemingly clean hit in a dirty area. Does that make the play clean? No. He knew the danger. A player skating at Patches speed is so easy to hit and chara knew he would be fly like a rag-doll. If this doesn’t change things in the NHL I don’t know what will.
Best wishes to Max. I hope his family is able to get into town soon. I can’t imagine the anguish they would have experienced in witnessing the incident and being left to wonder about the condition of their loved one.
By no means am I excusing Chara’s actions, but at least he had the decency to address the media afterward. We can’t expect him, however, to openly admit to guiding an opponent’s head into a stanchion.
That said, I don’t for one second believe him when he says he didn’t know where they were, or only ‘vaguely’ knew that they were ‘near the bench’. I never made it out of house league hockey, but as a hockey player, I bloody well knew where I was on the ice at all times. Yes, it’s blindingly faster in the NHL, but that’s precisely why you MUST know where you are at all times; otherwise, you’d be putting yourself in vulnerable/dangerous positions all the time.
He should be suspended, but whether that will happen, I do have my doubts. This league is hardly a model of weighted, insightful discipline.

Pouliot doesn’t get much ice time..but then again..he doesn’t deserve it. He needs a remedial course in basic hockey skills..keep your stick on the ice for one.He’s always got it up around his ears. He can’t seem to make a sharp turn without falling..and if he tries to quickly accelerate from a standing start, he has his weight back on his heels and is wobbly till he gets going.
I like him though. He’s got a terrific shot and seems to be playing several degrees harder this year. A little work and he might turn into a hockey player. Unfortunately, he is not contributing at the level we need him to this year.
a very solid first period…eller line had one of the best periods of any hab line this year..not sold on halpern on a top line but it is working for now but we will need that line to score in the future…pouliot has no value on the team if he plays so little time ..an energy type player would be better..

Realized belatedly that it wasn’t clear who I was referring to. My comment was referring to the Devils’ chances of making the playoffs. While Buffalo/Carolina will probably take at least one of the spots, the Rangers are also within striking distance in 7th place. So basically the Rangers, Sabres, Hurricanes, Leafs and Devils are fighting it out for two playoff spots, with the Habs comfortably ahead and fighting instead for a #4/5 seed. I doubt they are catching the Bruins at this point, but stranger things have happened.
With three games in hand on the Rangers, 7th place is in play as well. But i don’t think they will quite catch up. They’be been gaining 6-9 points per 10 games on everybody else in the conference since early January, but that has relied on an unbelievable hot streak that is hard to see continuing through another 16 games.
Odds that the Devils make it are presently at 2% – they just don’t have enough race track left, and the fortuitous scheduling that has the Sabres & Canes playing each other twice before the end of the season virtually assures that it’ll be one of them making the playoffs, with the other duking it out with the Rangers.
Most likely the Habs end up in 5th or 6th, and the situation with the top three has become much more fluid due to the Flyers stumbling while Pittsburgh continues to accumulate points despite losing a bunch, and the Bruins and Caps catching heat at the right time.
Only way the Habs have a chance to catch the B’s for the division is to take both of the remaining games in regulation. Any extra points for Boston in these 4-(or more)-pointers will give them just too much cushion, no matter how hard the Habs are pushin’.

Even if we win this game by some miracle the Habs can not take this Bruins team in a 7 game series,which made this season pointless “unless your just into sport entertainment and don’t care about the point of winning” I think Gauthier is still in 1990, aiming his Nordicks to beat Montreal and is outta touch with the NHL. And Count Chocula has no answer for games like this one coming up. Go Habs Go!
Our household shelled out the couple of bucks a month it took us to pick up the standard definition RDS feed. Best money we’ve ever spent. I’d rather watch RDS’s SD feed than CBC’s HD feed.
if we win a tight game or lget beat in a tight game …what if it is a shoot out decision? ..will it mean anything either way?..i think people are making a bigger thing out of this game than it should be…it will make no sense that the team makes this such an emotional game and we win but than get beat the next three because of a letdown

Bill McCreary best ref what a joke he will allow Boston to take 5 or 6 shots at the Habs before he calls one and will call this even . The Bruins know dam well they can get away with murder because this ass hole will only call maybe 2 penalties each and not call the game. For Christ sake JM watch a few films on Scott Bowman or read something about Bowman he never allowed the refs to favor the Bruins and call them out. Of course I’m hoping Jaro does well. He’s a great story – late, late round pick who gives it 100%. Now if he’s playing Les Boys, I hope we win big, but that all the goals are full value.
The Bruins have no intention of gooning it up. Watch: after all this hype, they will play a tight disciplined game, Mara and White will get little ice time. As a coach, it’s what I would do: play up the goon card, get a jerk like Marchand to shoot his mouth off… and then come game time, tell my guys, “they’re playing an error prone (White) and slow as molasses (Mara) pair of guys tonight. Play disciplined and tight, and let THEM take the penalties.”
Last Night I rewatched the supposed “massacre”. I didn’t think I could but knowing the outcome I just looked at the play. It was a hoot. Except for the last couple of minutes, including Campbellgate, Boston was not as tough as I remember and Montreal was not as “soft”.
Actually some of our strongest guys were not involved. AK, Wiz, even Gomez who often loses his top was unusually calm amongst others. They’ll be ready tonight.
In fact, our team lost that game because our D was terrible. Lucic and Chara do have some chromosomes missing, but if our team had stuck to their gameplan, they would have won. And Floppy was horrible, as usual, against our Habs except for a great 1st period save against DD.

Somewhat amusing that a little puke like Marchand is smack-talking about the Habs being the type to instigate and then look at the refs when it comes time to step up.
God why am I complaining, but first, I thought the D played well mostly keeping the B’s to the outside. A few chances, but Boston is quite deep much to our ire. Even though, I loved what White did. Really dangerous play by Boychuck, the boys on RDS pointed out how his stick position could have really done some harm. The instigator was B.S. but after a few minutes I realized that Desharnais and Pouliot had been benched. I think JM double shifted someone and put them out there once but I mean if you’re not using Halpern for faceoffs, and Pouliot is on the bench… its just painful watching Halpern out there. He’s in all the right places but he can’t do much. He is much better suited for the shutdown puck possesion type of game. Great to see Eller being in the right spot and being able to do something about it. I loved his last goal, he knew exactly what to do, and did it really fluidly.
I hope the B’s come out and play hockey in the 2nd and not let whatever “little dispicable” things the habs did give the apparent drama queens an excuse to go all reptillian on our poor boys.

we can see the formation of a very solid team for the future…with markov and gorges back next year…really 3 upgrades are needed(pyatt,pouliot and halpern)..all 3 of these players have contributed this year but to get even better we need players that are better than these three…moen and ak46 if they can play 80% of the time like they have played the last 2 weeks than they should be back….
One thing you can count on the Habs will be in the box early in the second to give the Bruins a chance to get back into this game you can take that to the bank.

Any team can beat us in a seven game series, and we have a decent change against any of them. Regular season head-to-hear records are meaningless. If I had to go out and pick them, though:
Fear: Washington (I believe they are a better playoff team than last year), Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey (if they get in…that team is playing unbelievable hockey)
On the fence: Pittsburgh (if Crosby comes back, elevate them to fear), New York Rangers (if Lundqvist gets hot, they are a handful)
Not so much fear: Tampa Bay (although St. Louis and Lecavalier do appear more energetic against the Habs, even if the stats don’t show much difference), Carolina, Toronto
So, I think it’s safe to say that depending on how all the teams play there’s a possibility that we play any of the 8 teams in the first round (not out of the realm of possibility to catch Boston, nor is it impossible that Boston catches Philly, nor is it imossible for us to grab a home ice series or two).
With that in mind who do you most want to play, and who do you fear the most?

I think hate is the greatest thing in sports. The more the teams have for each other, the better the games. That last game really ignited the whole history of hate between these two teams.
Now we’ll see how justice is metered out in the NHL when a star player is involved and Campbell’s kid is playing!

I cancelled my duplicate bridge game tonight and expect that we’ll have three daughters, two boyfriends, son and girlfriend and both grandkids in the rec room when the puck drops. But….
The hot water heater is dead again. This, after 4 service calls, 2 repairs – and at least a dozen occasions where I got it started again on my own - all since December (thank God we rent it). Just received confirmation that the repairmen will make their service call between 6:00 and 8:00 tonight. Hopefully it’s not the same guys as the ones last week who blamed it on the wind. Seems kind of strange that the thing ran like a Swiss clock for ten years and now malfunctions weekly.
In any case, my bad luck should hold out – which translates to good luck for the Habs. When I’m dealing with the repair guys, for sure Les Boys will score at least two goals, maybe three. The rule is – I’ll miss them. When I leave the room, they score.

Take the Bloor subway to Spadina – short walk a couple of blocks west after the stop. Or go to Bathurst and come back a couple of blocks east. Watched many a game there. Tuesday night is wings – very good and very reasonably priced. There’s a seat from the old Forum in there as well – neat place.
A bruins stanley cup = winning a series against the Habs.

but thank the heavens that MARTIN went with his gut instinct and inserted some NAG North American Grit into the lineup, just unfortunate that it takes a MASSACRE before he realizes what we need. Thank God that WHITE is in over Pyatt. White is one heck of a tough kid, hard nosed that will go anywhere, no faceshield, long hair toughness, and on many after the whistle scrums, when a “Hartnell” type would look up and see its White, they back down, because White has been there.. that is the key, being a hardnosed player through the system, not an over abundance of finesse players, really unimaginable that with our top 6 being all finesse, that Martin would load the bottom six the same way… but its changing, by necessity.
Same deal with MARA, massive improvement in the GRIT scale over WEBER…
we have just gained over 100lbs of muscle, over 18″ of height and a truckload of GRIT… and its going to make a difference tonight.
Having one of : HENRY/CONBOY/BONNO on the 4th line would have been the icing on the cake for this match, but Martin is a bit fearful… Dick Irvin would have done it.
anyway, make no mistake, this game will define our playoff run.

Leblanc and Kristo are heavily favoured by Hockey’s Future as MTL’s top offensive prospects outside of the Canadiens system and if you asked a scout, they’d tell you the same, of MTL prospects they have the best offensive upside among their non-professional players right now. Avtsin has had his stock rising for a bit and while his rookie season is not overwhelming, he is also only 19 years old and new to the NA game, he needs a lot more strength training to move along and a couple more seasons in HAM likely but he was considered a steal on draft day that was high-risk only because he’s Russian and no one likes to bet about getting them over from the KHL.
I pick up reports on Bulldogs players from any source I can find, Avtsin is a young player who’s physically outmatched right now and had to deal with some wrist problems going back to last season. Plenty of time for him to develop. He’s a 2009 draft pick after all and this is pretty early in his development. Gallagher is no Locke, he plays tougher than his size would indicate and doesn’t back down, his signature scoring move is skating right into the crease to finish his chance.

Bruins: least penalized team in the NHL with a roster full of goons + Campbell’s son. Coincidence? Obviously not, and those emails simply confirmed that Campbell is corrupt and influencing the refereeing in favour of players and teams he likes.
Only a Mickey-Mouse league like Bettman’s NHL would allows this to happen. I can’t see it happening in the NFL or Premier League Football or at Wimbledon. Not without riots.

This is March. There is a lot of water that has to run under the bridge before we get to a game that will define “our playoff run.” Usually, that game occurs…during the playoffs. So, relax and enjoy the no-hitter tonight.

I was at the Hamilton-Toronto back to back games this weekend and Avtsin, who was invisible in both games as he has been all season IMO. A big strong kid like that should have more upside and he has been disappointing.
Go to Copps like I do, and speak to the hardcore fans who know more firsthand, and ask them who has upside on thas team and some will tell you that it is the veteran players who could play in Montreal and write it here on your blog.
Leblanc and Kristo are too early to rate them as as strong top 6 upside. Gallagher reminds me of a Corey Locke, potential but just too small enough to make in at the next level in the NHL.

I thought the same about Crawford until I looked at this win-loss record. Price is 31-21-6, and while he’s been our MVP, that’s still a lot of losses. Crawford is 26-12-3 which is statistically better winning % and his GAA is better. I think Price is a better goalie, but these ratings are done on stats, where Crawford, and 4 other goalies have better numbers.

Listening to Team990 today I’m finding it bizarre just how over hyped one game has become. Never have I seen one regular season hockey game drawn so much analysis. You would think the 8-6 game last month was on the level of the 2008 economic collapse, the JFK assassination or 9/11.

OF COURSE CHara is saying it was “unfortunate” and that he didn’t intend it. If he said anything else he’d be arrested. The replay doesn’t lie: Chara sees the stanchion and uses his arm to take Pac’s head into it. After the last game stuff between those two the intent couldn’t be any more obvious.

I tried to get on Habs I/O after the hit, but the server was down.
Chara should be suspended and should go to hell. He had motive (him and Pacioretty have a history), he extends his arm out to lead Pacioretty into the stanchion, the hit was late (puck was gone), and it wasn’t a necessary hockey play to prevent Pacioretty from scoring (Chara’s D partner was back, on the puck).
Chara is going to plead innocence. But you cannot tell me a guy who has played this long does not know that the stanchion is there, and plus he extends his arm specifically to continue guiding Pacioretty into the stanchion.
More broadly, it was a hit that involved the head. This is precisely what the league needs to get rid of. Because Chara is a captain or well-liked (by some) does not exempt him from rules that should protect players when they are vulnerable and take shots to the head nonetheless. In fact, this is an optimal opportunity for the league to demonstrate how seriously it takes these type of unnecessary, dangerous, disrespectful plays to the head that have tremendously bad consequences. Crosby still isn’t back, who knows how long Pacioretty will be out.
To make matters worse, Lucic tries to fight a non-fighter when the game is out of hand and when the class thing to do would be to let the game end given what happened.
Before the game, I had little respect for the Bruins as a fan of the Habs. Now, I have no respect for Chara and Lucic as human beings. This is beyond hockey — these two will get what’s coming to them, whether from the league or some external, karmic force.
I hope Pacioretty has a full and speedy recovery, and I wish the whole Habs I/O family well.

It was a heartbreaker to see a good player go down like that, and Patches came into this season with so much confidence he has been a real great part of the team.

White set the tone early by beating on Boychuk. Mara was a great physical presence, Kostitsyn was playing like a power forward and Price is becoming the franchise. I especially like a point late in the first with the Boston goon squad in the Montreal zone and after the whistle blows Thornton looks around and sees Mara, White and Sopel (all players who weren’t there last time) and nothing happens. Loved it. Now as long as MaxPac is okay I’m a very happy camper.
VS. reporting that both locker rooms and officials didn’t think Chara hit was intentional and that suspension is unlikely.

How long have we been saying that this team needs some people to protect our young assets. The game last month was a clear message that other teams felt like they could do whatever they wanted with our team. Gauthier had up to the deadline to do something about this. There we players available that would have helped protect our players (Belak, Scortini) The Bruins are a classless team and it starts right at the top. Neely salivates at any kind of violence and it flow right down to a goon coach in Julien. All of the Bruins players follow suit and it really showed in the last 3 minutes of this game.
I am not a fan of fighting. But we need to protect our players. Again, get well Patches.

I had the same problem as you and regarding the hit I agree with you that he knew what he was doing. So many times analyst go on about how top players are able to slow down the game and react quicker. Last i checked Chara was a top player, pretty sure he was able to clearly tell what was going to happen, but just to be sure he pushed Pacthes upper body over the boards anyways.

Intent is no defense for Chara – it doesn’t matter if he intended to injure Patch or not. He injured him carelessly during the commission of a penalty – interference. He was committing an illegal play and that careless, illegal play could have killed a player. He has to be suspended for a good long while.

Okay, replay shows chara directing Patches head into the stanchion. Chara knew exactly what he was doing, he was looking at the stanchion as he made the hit. This is a dirty hockey play. Combine this with the past history between Chara and Pacioretty and it is clear what the intent was. The player needs to be disciplined severely. I know the NHL doesn’t operate like this but Chara should be out for at the very least, the same amount of games that Pacioretty is injured.

I think that we shouldn’t get too stuck on Chara’s “intentions”. It doesn’t matter what he intended. At best, he acted in a manner so reckless that he jeopardized the health (and you could argue life) of another player. For his actions the on-ice officials issued a MAJOR penalty and a game misconduct.
Unless the NHL wants to argue that the officials blew the call, he has to be suspended.
I also think that Chara’s past interactions with Pacioretti are not helpful to him. He should draw a longer suspension because of the history between himself and PAtches.

Whether or not there was malicious intent is a completely moot at this point. You just don’t make a play like that with seconds left to play in the period when the score is 4-0. It’s extremely careless. Whether or not his intent was to destroy patches. the hit was malicious and he should be given heavy discipline by the Cambell.
This is whats wrong with the league though. A seemingly clean hit in a dirty area. Does that make the play clean? No. He knew the danger. A player skating at Patches speed is so easy to hit and chara knew he would be fly like a rag-doll. If this doesn’t change things in the NHL I don’t know what will.

Best wishes to Max. I hope his family is able to get into town soon. I can’t imagine the anguish they would have experienced in witnessing the incident and being left to wonder about the condition of their loved one.
By no means am I excusing Chara’s actions, but at least he had the decency to address the media afterward. We can’t expect him, however, to openly admit to guiding an opponent’s head into a stanchion.
That said, I don’t for one second believe him when he says he didn’t know where they were, or only ‘vaguely’ knew that they were ‘near the bench’. I never made it out of house league hockey, but as a hockey player, I bloody well knew where I was on the ice at all times. Yes, it’s blindingly faster in the NHL, but that’s precisely why you MUST know where you are at all times; otherwise, you’d be putting yourself in vulnerable/dangerous positions all the time.
He should be suspended, but whether that will happen, I do have my doubts. This league is hardly a model of weighted, insightful discipline.
Again, best wishes go to Max and his family. Let’s hope he can make a full recovery, regardless of how long that might take and whether it ever allows him to take to the ice again. Health and quality of life above all else.

JM has to get Cammy and Pleks away from the Lucic line they are playing big time scared. Christ Pleks and Cammy are taking weak slaps at the puck and not skating. JM put King Eller’s line out against them and sit those two on the bench. Start giving more ice to DD”s line also not much since in having two players who are afraid to play out on the ice.

Pouliot doesn’t get much ice time..but then again..he doesn’t deserve it. He needs a remedial course in basic hockey skills..keep your stick on the ice for one.He’s always got it up around his ears. He can’t seem to make a sharp turn without falling..and if he tries to quickly accelerate from a standing start, he has his weight back on his heels and is wobbly till he gets going.
I like him though. He’s got a terrific shot and seems to be playing several degrees harder this year. A little work and he might turn into a hockey player. Unfortunately, he is not contributing at the level we need him to this year.

Realized belatedly that it wasn’t clear who I was referring to. My comment was referring to the Devils’ chances of making the playoffs. While Buffalo/Carolina will probably take at least one of the spots, the Rangers are also within striking distance in 7th place. So basically the Rangers, Sabres, Hurricanes, Leafs and Devils are fighting it out for two playoff spots, with the Habs comfortably ahead and fighting instead for a #4/5 seed. I doubt they are catching the Bruins at this point, but stranger things have happened.
With three games in hand on the Rangers, 7th place is in play as well. But i don’t think they will quite catch up. They’be been gaining 6-9 points per 10 games on everybody else in the conference since early January, but that has relied on an unbelievable hot streak that is hard to see continuing through another 16 games.
Odds that the Devils make it are presently at 2% – they just don’t have enough race track left, and the fortuitous scheduling that has the Sabres & Canes playing each other twice before the end of the season virtually assures that it’ll be one of them making the playoffs, with the other duking it out with the Rangers.
Most likely the Habs end up in 5th or 6th, and the situation with the top three has become much more fluid due to the Flyers stumbling while Pittsburgh continues to accumulate points despite losing a bunch, and the Bruins and Caps catching heat at the right time.
Only way the Habs have a chance to catch the B’s for the division is to take both of the remaining games in regulation. Any extra points for Boston in these 4-(or more)-pointers will give them just too much cushion, no matter how hard the Habs are pushin’.

Bill McCreary best ref what a joke he will allow Boston to take 5 or 6 shots at the Habs before he calls one and will call this even . As a coach, it’s what I would do: play up the goon card, get a jerk like Marchand to shoot his mouth off… and then come game time, tell my guys, “they’re playing an error prone (White) and slow as molasses (Mara) pair of guys tonight. Play disciplined and tight, and let THEM take the penalties.”

Last Night I rewatched the supposed “massacre”. I didn’t think I could but knowing the outcome I just looked at the play. It was a hoot. Except for the last couple of minutes, including Campbellgate, Boston was not as tough as I remember and Montreal was not as “soft”.
Actually some of our strongest guys were not involved. AK, Wiz, even Gomez who often loses his top was unusually calm amongst others. They’ll be ready tonight.
In fact, our team lost that game because our D was terrible. Lucic and Chara do have some chromosomes missing, but if our team had stuck to their gameplan, they would have won. And Floppy was horrible, as usual, against our Habs except for a great 1st period save against DD.

God why am I complaining, but first, I thought the D played well mostly keeping the B’s to the outside. A few chances, but Boston is quite deep much to our ire. Even though, I loved what White did. Really dangerous play by Boychuck, the boys on RDS pointed out how his stick position could have really done some harm. The instigator was B.S. but after a few minutes I realized that Desharnais and Pouliot had been benched. I think JM double shifted someone and put them out there once but I mean if you’re not using Halpern for faceoffs, and Pouliot is on the bench… its just painful watching Halpern out there. He’s in all the right places but he can’t do much. He is much better suited for the shutdown puck possesion type of game. Great to see Eller being in the right spot and being able to do something about it. I loved his last goal, he knew exactly what to do, and did it really fluidly.
I hope the B’s come out and play hockey in the 2nd and not let whatever “little dispicable” things the habs did give the apparent drama queens an excuse to go all reptillian on our poor boys.

we can see the formation of a very solid team for the future…with markov and gorges back next year…really 3 upgrades are needed(pyatt,pouliot and halpern)..all 3 of these players have contributed this year but to get even better we need players that are better than these three…moen and ak46 if they can play 80% of the time like they have played the last 2 weeks than they should be back….

Any team can beat us in a seven game series, and we have a decent change against any of them. Regular season head-to-hear records are meaningless. If I had to go out and pick them, though:
Fear: Washington (I believe they are a better playoff team than last year), Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey (if they get in…that team is playing unbelievable hockey)
On the fence: Pittsburgh (if Crosby comes back, elevate them to fear), New York Rangers (if Lundqvist gets hot, they are a handful)
Not so much fear: Tampa Bay (although St. Louis and Lecavalier do appear more energetic against the Habs, even if the stats don’t show much difference), Carolina, Toronto
So, I think it’s safe to say that depending on how all the teams play there’s a possibility that we play any of the 8 teams in the first round (not out of the realm of possibility to catch Boston, nor is it impossible that Boston catches Philly, nor is it imossible for us to grab a home ice series or two).
With that in mind who do you most want to play, and who do you fear the most?

I cancelled my duplicate bridge game tonight and expect that we’ll have three daughters, two boyfriends, son and girlfriend and both grandkids in the rec room when the puck drops. But….
The hot water heater is dead again. This, after 4 service calls, 2 repairs – and at least a dozen occasions where I got it started again on my own - all since December (thank God we rent it). Just received confirmation that the repairmen will make their service call between 6:00 and 8:00 tonight. Hopefully it’s not the same guys as the ones last week who blamed it on the wind. Seems kind of strange that the thing ran like a Swiss clock for ten years and now malfunctions weekly.
In any case, my bad luck should hold out – which translates to good luck for the Habs. When I’m dealing with the repair guys, for sure Les Boys will score at least two goals, maybe three. The rule is – I’ll miss them. When I leave the room, they score.
