I did want to take a chance on the big Slovenian – but drafting can be a crap shoot. Price was taken too high – big deal, that’s water under the bridge. I would just like to see a good, solid NHL calibre goalie in there.
Then he’ll get blown out of nets because he has no experience beyond the ECHL, you’ll call him a hack and useless then cry for Petteri Simila or Karri Ramo. Habs fans booing their goalie out of nets because the next guy has to be better, rinse and repeat in the march to futility.

with the salary cap era, i think you’ll see more high price veterans going the way of huet and redden. they are too expensive for a team to keep when the same result could be performed by a rookie for a fraction of the cost.

Max-Pac with 1 year of NCAA and half a season of AHL? Mistake. Guimauve skipping the Hammer? Crybaby attitude and marshmellows between the ears aside, still a mistake. SK with half a year in Hamilton? Oh that was a mistake. Price? Should’ve spent 07-08 with the Dogs as well.
I’m all for prospect development, I don’t think anyone should be rushed and I was arguing with people here for half the damn 09-10 season to NOT rush PK up, not to talk about these crazy Markov trades and drop it all on Subban’s head to carry offence and QB the PP unit. maybe. all kidding aside, for me, i don’t mind that gomez doesn’t score goals. in my opinion, that’s not the strength of his game. he’s a playmaker, he makes it so that others score the goals. granted his salary is evidence of a time long gone, pre-salary cap. is he worth that? i think we all know he’s overpaid, but i think he’s a good competitor and a more than competent passer. if gio nabs 30+ goals for the habs, then gomez is doing is job.

I don’t think Pacioretty was really intentional, he became a victim of spot-filling when the injuries knocked around the 08-09 squad and they were just grabbing any warm body from HAM who had some points. I think the 10-11 season in Hamilton will do him a ton of good.

Edmonton and Calgary are 2-0, so I suppose they’re cup contenders..
The record is not relevant but the play on the ice is troubling. If the team play and overall defensive play does not get progessively better as pre season goes on then it IS time to worry.

No doubt the first spezza goal was weak. He was so left out to dry afterwards by some of the worst defensive play i’ve seen in years,mainly from spacek. But if he is going to be our #1,he still needs to make the odd big save. The number of breakaways and odd man rushes was unreal.
Unfortunately when the defence has as many lapses as it did tonight, the odd big save won’t be enough. On nights like tonight he’d have to have the best game of his career to salvage a win.
And there lies one of the problems. Why does one player get a free pass when another doesn’t? We saw this all year last year with guys like mab getting all kinds of ice time no matter how much he screwed up and obyrne would ride the pine if he farted on the team charter. Spacek shouldn’t get a free ride because he is a vet and is supposed to lead by example. Looking like a defensive sieve doens’t do any of our prospects any good considering he is being paired with tinordi. Who do you think would be taking the heat this pre-season had spacek been traded to us as part of the halak deal? Not price. Guess who it taking the heat due to the results of spacek’s (and others) horrible defensive play?
So we’re back to the system and the gel period?
Auld looks old. Like maybe a candidate for waivers. Better to have Sanford as Price’s back-up and mentor. Problem is Sanford will out-duel Price. Seriously, sorry to bust the Price bubble but Sanford is better at this moment then Price is.

Just for some perspective: last pre-season, the top goal scorer was Viktor Stallberg, the top point getter was Mike Comrie, and the top goalie was Chris Mason.
The year before the top goal scorer was Corey Perry, the top point getter was Andy MacDonald, and the top goalie was Michael Leighton.
My point? I don’t really have one, other than that maybe those who are saying “it’s just preseason” have a point. That being said, i agree that Carey needs to have the attitude that no goal is a good goal, given his current situation…fair or not. Let’s hope he rounds into form by October 7!

Oh i agree, just based on lineups alone i pretty much had this pencilled as a loss unless price played out of his mind and got offensive production from everybody. I already knew their PP would kill us considering who they had dressed and who we didn’t have dressed. What i really don’t get is how price’s play is being so scrutinized from meaningless preseason games yet not one word about spacek. Who IMO has been one of the worst player in camp. Easily the worst among the players who are expected to make the team.
It’s because Larry Robinson wasn’t traded away this summer.

Carey and his team mates recognize if he lets in just one bad goal he will be vilified in Montreal. How does anyone perform under that kind of pressure? Even with icewater for blood it has to get to you. An athlete has to be relaxed AND confident in order to perform at a high level. This is very troubling, and yes I realize it is pre season. But what happens in the first home game? We don’t have the luxury anymore of playing Price in the away games.

OK, so the Spezza goal was awful. Big deal. THe pre-season is to get rid of the rust and the guys who aren’t ready to play at this level. The team from games 1 and 3 will contribute 1/4 of the regular team and the Game 2 team will contribute 3/4′s.

Almost all shots against the Bruins are from bad angles and far out. Julien is a brilliant coach. And any rebound is instantly cleared. Not to mention trying to pass through the slot seems to be impossible against them.
New Jersey? Philly? even Pittsburgh are all arguably as good if not better than Boston. Boston has Chara for half a game, but Seidenberg, and Hunwick arent names that strike fear in the hearts of opponents. Try Pronger, Coburn, Timmonen, Carle Meszaros and O’Donnel.
Boston, this year they don’t even have Wideman. They will be weaker on the backend this year, but pretty powerful up front, even with Savard out.
Edit: and if we’re excusing PRice for being poor due it the exhibition roster in front of him, then give Rask credit for being excellent despite having a pre-season defense in front of him,

Boston plays 5 man defense. NJ used to be great but they’re not the same anymore. NJ traps the neutral zone, Boston masters their own zone better than anyone else. Pittsburgh is good defensively sometimes, and other times terrible.

I had a feeling that once that fluky goal went in off of Price’s leg, things would start getting bad. Then after being undressed with 2 back to back goals, it was g’night Carey. I’m willing to excuse these 2 losses and rack it up to pre-season rustiness but he better bring his ‘A’ game when we play the Leafs on opening night, or he’s got some esplainin to do, chill or no chill.

hailing from north carolina, i can tell you that’s true. here, if the team sucks, people just don’t pay to go to the games. they are fair-weather fans for the most part, so they wouldn’t drop coin to go to a game and boo the boys. i mean, the canes won the cup five years ago, and they can’t sell out a home game. that is, unless ovechkin or crosby comes to town, and even then i bet you could go to the arena and get tickets that day and have a good selection of seats. kinda pathetic. but then again i’m a habs fan. one of a decent handful down here, too.

Price let in a terrible goal from behind the net. that goal deflated the team, gave Ottawa momentum, and Ottawa took over. that’s what a goal like that does. it kills your team!

Not wanting to sound completely niave, but the whole team, and numerous individual players have been alternately sucking and playing well during the preseason. That’s why they call it preseason. It comes before the real season and usually involves players that won’t be playing when the real season starts. Carey’s stuggling some, but most of them are off and on. I guess I could tell everyone to chillax, but I think it’s gotten pretty far past that by now……… .

Like many people here i’ve never been Price’s biggest fan, but it’s pre-season folks. Yes the Spezza goal was weak, but his team has left him high and dry as well on the other’s. The team is not 100% ready to go and Price was doing well before his team collapsed around him. Let’s also not forget he’s only 23 years old. Ryan Miller (you know, last year’s Vezina winner) didn’t get into the NHL until he was 25. The Habs rushed him too fast and are now paying the price (no pun intended). The kid is going to need time to round his game into shape.
Until Price gives them the confidence that he is ready to play, the team will continue to not play well in front of him. Happened last year, and will continue to happen until he changes that.
This is why they played so much better with the H-word in nets, they had confidence in him.
Spacek is a good second wave guy, Weber isn’t ready yet.
I think Spacek gets unfairly trashed at times and acknowledge Weber’s youth, but right now, one team has a much better option for carrying blueline offence.

Concur for sure. Kinda surprised that Gomez and Subban were put on the same team since they’re the two that most often skate the puck in.
i don’t know if weber will ever crack the habs line up. if marc-andre bergeron didn’t work out, why would i think weber would. great shot, true, but no size, no defensive up-side, and that’s his primary position.
At 21 Weber is already better defensively than MAB, and stronger. He’s a long termer, probably won’t make the Habs until he’s around 23 or even 24, but he’ll be good.

Defence was absolutely terrible tonight. Spacek was bad and playing with 5 defence for the majority of the game in the preseason has to be hard on everyone.
I was at the game and we looked horrible but playing against a virtually full sens team is how we should have looked with only a few guys in the lineup. 4 more pre season games so everyone relax and realize when the season starts for real.
